Vienna got down from the bus and walked to a convenience store nearby, where she bought some snacks to eat with a bottle of water. She sat down near the store to have them.
She was once a princess who wouldn't eat anything unless it was prepared by the best chef, but now she didn't even have enough money to eat a proper meal in one day.
She blamed Alan for her misfortunes. If it weren't for him, her life and her family wouldn't be ruined like this.
Three years ago, she was the well-known fiancée of the great and wealthy Clinton family.
Even though her family wasn't that rich, the title of Alan's fiancée commanded respect for her anywhere she went, and their wedding date was set.
Until she brought in Benita, someone she thought of as her best friend, whom she met at a club when she was harassed by a group of guys
Benita helped her, and after she told Vienna that she was an orphan with no means of help, Vienna decided to take her in and let her live with her in their house.
That was the biggest mistake she ever made, and Benita took everything from her. Vienna really loved Alan, but he believed Benita and chose Benita over her.
Because of Alan's grandfather's wish to get him married to secure his position, and because of the promise between their grandfathers, he decided to get them engaged immediately.
Vienna had a crush on Alan since she was ten years old, but he didn't notice her at all.
When she heard about the engagement between the two of them, she happily accepted without considering the fact that he didn't like her at all.
Alan had paid her little to no attention at all. He always ignored her and told her that he didn't acknowledge their relationship, but Vienna didn't give up.
Then, three years ago, while she was still in school, she received the news that her father had been arrested and taken to the police station.
She quickly left school and rushed over. Her father was reported for fraud and embezzlement of the company's funds, as well as manipulation of the company's accounts.
Vienna was speechless. Her dad might like money too much, but she knew he wouldn't do such a thing.
The case dragged on, but they couldn't bail him out. All their money and everything was seized.
She quickly ran to meet with Alan for help. She knew that just a word from him was enough to clear her father's name.
She first went to his company, but he wasn't there. Then, she went over to his house.
The security stopped her from entering and sent her out rudely. She was surprised and taken aback by their actions.
She waited for a long time and also tried calling him on the phone, but it was unreachable.
She waited till night, and then she saw him coming out with Benita beside him.
She was surprised and wondered why Benita, of all people, was with him and was even allowed to touch him.
She walked over to the two of them and tried to keep her calm.
"Alan, I've been waiting here for you for a long time now. Your security wouldn't allow me in," she said, looking very tired.
Benita held his hand more tightly and closer, and he also reciprocated.
Vienna swallowed hard and decided not to be bothered by it, since she had more important issues to discuss with him.
"Can we talk, please? It's urgent," she said again.
"There's nothing for us to talk about. If you want to talk about your dad, I know about it. And also, don't ever come here again. No matter how shameless you are, you should still have some self-respect. Shouldn't you?" he said in a very mean and annoyed tone.
Vienna tried to say something, but couldn't.
"What does he mean?" she thought.
"Why are you here?" she asked, directing the question to Benita.
"Why am I here with my boyfriend, in his house?" Benita asked with arrogance written all over her face.
Vienna felt her body tremble. She suddenly developed a throbbing pain in her head and held it.
"Have you lost your mind? What nonsense are you saying?" Benita asked aggressively and turned to Alan.
"Alan, say something," she screamed and held his hand. Alan shoved her away, and Benita pushed Vienna to the floor.
They both walked away after instructing the security guard to throw her out.
Vienna stood up from the floor and dusted off her clothes. She was devastated, and tears started to fall from her eyes.
She slowly walked away from there and went back to meet her mother.
When she got there, she was informed that her mother had collapsed and had been taken to the hospital.
She quickly took a cab and rushed to the hospital immediately.
She asked the nurse in charge about her mother and was directed to the right room.
She entered the room and saw her mother lying unconscious on the bed, with her younger sister Vanessa sitting beside her.
Vienna moved over to her side and sat beside Vanessa, then held her mother's hands.
"Vanessa, what happened?" Vienna asked, concern etched on her face.
Vanessa looked up at her, tears streaming down her face.
"Mom collapsed and was taken to the hospital. And it's all because of you and your stupid obsession with Alan!" Vanessa exclaimed, her voice shaking with anger.
Vienna was taken aback by her sister's words
"What are you talking about?" she asked, feeling a sense of trepidation.
Vanessa's eyes flashed with anger.
"Your dear fiancé is responsible for Dad's arrest. And not just that, he also blacklisted our family from the business world, and his company announced that his girlfriend is Benita, that useless girl you brought home."
Vienna was stunned. She didn't want to believe what her sister was saying, but judging by what had happened so far, it seemed to be the truth.
It was so strange that her father was arrested all of a sudden.
He had never allowed her to come close to him before, but today, she saw him holding hands with Benita.
She felt her legs become weak and unable to carry her body. She slowly slid down and sat on the floor.
"This can't be true," she screamed, her voice echoing through the hospital room.
Vanessa's expression didn't change.
"You should have stayed away from Alan. Now, look at what's happened to us."
Vienna's eyes welled up with tears as she realized the truth.
Benita had used her, and she had fallen for it. She trusted both her and Alan, and they betrayed her.
Just then, the doctor came in to check on their mother.
"I'm afraid your mother's condition is critical. We need to run some more tests to determine the cause of her collapse."
Vienna nodded, still trying to process everything that had happened.
She felt like her world had been turned upside down. She had lost everything: her family's reputation, her fiancé, and her dignity.
Vienna wiped her tears as she remembered these things and drank some water. Her mother was back in the hospital again.
Her phone rang, and she picked it up.
"Vienna, where are you right now?" Nisan asked.
"I'm just around the hospital. I will soon join you there," she answered and cut the call. She quickly finished up and went towards the direction of the hospital.
She entered and went straight to her mother's ward. She met Nisan and Vanessa at the entrance, pacing up and down.
She walked up to them and tapped Nisan on the shoulder.
"You're finally here!" he exclaimed and stopped walking.
"What's the situation right now?" she asked anxiously. Vanessa also moved closer to them.
"The doctor is examining her. We will know more about her situation once the doctor is out," Vanessa answered. Vienna nodded her head and waited with them.
The doctor came out in a few minutes, and they rushed over to him. "Doctor, what's the situation?" they asked together.
"I told you the last time that she needs to get surgery, but you didn't make any attempt to do it. Now, her condition is very critical, and if she doesn't get the surgery before two weeks from now, she won't make it," he explained. Vanessa started to sob quietly.
They didn't even have the money to eat a normal meal. She thought sadly.
"So, how much are we talking about here?" Vienna asked and held her breath to hear his answer.
"For a start, we don't have enough facilities here. So, we will have to transfer her to a bigger hospital. Ten million should be enough for a start," he answered. The three of them turned to him, shocked.
"Did you just say ten million?" Nisan asked again to be sure.
"Yes, you heard me. Also, it will be better to get it done soon and transfer her. You also have to pay your bills; they are piling up," he told them and left.
Vienna slowly went down, and Nisan quickly moved to hold her before she fell.
"Calm down, I will do everything possible to get the money for you," Nisan assured.
"Are you kidding? Do you think ten million is a child's play? We don't even have up to five thousand with everything on us. Where do we get ten million in two weeks?" Vanessa asked.
After checking on their mother, they all left the hospital together, back to the house.
"So, what are we going to do now? We can't just let her die," Vanessa said.
"I seriously don't know. I'm lost right now," Vienna replied.
"You're lost? If you're lost, then find yourself from wherever you are. Everything that has happened to us so far is your fault, and you know it. If not because of your stupidity, we wouldn't be in this mess," Vanessa said.
"Can you stop bringing up this issue all the time? You keep blaming me at every little issue, and I didn't ask for any of this..." Vienna said.
"Of course, you didn't, at first, it was Dad, now it's Mom. I'm sure I'm the next person." Venessa spat.
"Vanessa, are you nuts? What rubbish are you saying?" Vienna yelled at her.
"Did it sound like nonsense to you? If you hadn't argued with her over something so stupid, then she wouldn't be in this situation. If you hadn't insisted on being with that man back then, Dad wouldn't be in this situation either," Vanessa argued.
"Shut your mouth!" Vienna screamed angrily.
Nisan quickly stepped in to avoid them from getting physical.
"Why do you two always fight like cats and rats? What you two should be worried about is how to get money for the surgery and also how to move her to the city," Nisan snapped at the both of them.
They both stopped for a second and rolled eyes at each other, turning ther backs at each other.
"Guys, this is about your mother. You shouldn't waste time at all. Time isn't on our side," he said again to persuade them.
"I'm going to the city tomorrow to meet my father and see if I can get some amount from him. Hopefully, it will cover some of the expenses," he told them.
"Are you for real? Your family doesn't want to see you at all, and you want to go meet them for help? In your dreams," Vanessa said and sat down.
Vienna stare at her in disbelieve, shaking her head.
"What? He is an illegitimate son, and they have a real son. Why do you think they will want to lend him money?" She shrugged.
"I suggest we go meet Dad at the prison and see if he has anyone who can help us," Vanessa suggested.
"Just shut up your mouth and go back to your school," Vienna scolded.
"What? I was sent back home from school yesterday. Have you forgotten? You haven't paid my fee for a session now, and I'm in my final year, You're just not capable," Vanessa said and went inside.
"That rude brat," Vienna said and sat down, dejected.
"I'm tired," she said with tears forming in her eyes.
"Don't cry now. You have to be strong now more than ever. I'm sure Vanessa didn't mean those mean words she said. She's also frustrated," Nisan said to comfort her and placed his hand on her shoulder.
Vienna turned and buried her head in his arms.
"I really wish there's a way out of all this," she said with tears.
"It's going to be okay," he said.
"Nothing is going to be okay, There's nothing going right at all. Everything is just falling apart. Mom is in the hospital; she needs money, Dad is still arrested without any hope of getting out soon. Vanessa is missing out on school because of me" Vienna recount and took a second to recall other payment issues they have.
"The house rent is due by next week, and I don't even have any money to feed us at all, not to talk of paying for the hospital bills we're still owing,"
Just then, Vanessa emerged from the room again, changed and with her bag and some books.
"I'm going to the library to do some research and read for a bit," she told them and turned to leave, then turned back to them.
"Take this and use it to take a bus to work; don't walk again. Also, use the rest to get something to eat. I'll also eat before coming, so no need to cook," she said and left.
Vienna raised her head from Nisan's shoulder and looked at the money on the table.
"Where did she get money from?" she asked, surprised.
"She's not a kid, and she surely has some savings," he replied.
"I should go to work now. I'll inform the boss that you're not feeling too well," he said and got up.
"What do you mean? I'm coming with you. I can't afford to miss a day of work in this kind of situation. I should work harder," she said and went inside to quickly change and came out dressed, and they left together.
Alan's mother, Sasha, led him to the living room and helped him sit. His grandfather and father were also in the room with his elder sister, Harley.
Harley moved closer to him and waved her hands in front of his eyes.
"This is bad. How come the doctors couldn't do anything about this? It's really not good at all," she said and sat down beside him.
"Harley, you don't have to rub it in on your brother's injury," Sasha said.
Their grandfather hit the staff in his hand lightly on the floor, and everyone kept quiet, turning their attention to him.
"I didn't call you here to talk about what happened to Alan; I'm here for something more important. It's about your engagement with the Miners. You cut off the engagement back then with a lie, but now you have no excuse at all. Also, if you want to stabilize your position, you need a wife," he said.
"Grandfather, are you serious? What girl will want to marry a blind man?" Harley mocked.
"Harley! How could you refer to your brother as a blind man? My son is not blind; it's partially impaired and temporary. He will soon regain his sight," Sasha snapped at her angrily.
"But you have to face it, Mom. He is really blind."she shrugged.
"How about your husband?" Grandfather asked, staring at Harley.
She immediately kept quiet at the mention of her husband and her face dampened.
"You should go back home now. You've already spent more than a week here. You are still married to him, and remember what I said. No divorce, so you'd better settle with him," he warned.
"Dad, Harley's marriage is like this because it was an arranged marriage. I don't think it's a good idea to also let Alan get married to someone against his will," Alan's father, Williams, said for the first time.
"Yes, Father, I agree with him. Also, why do you have to marry the both of them off to people below our standard?" their mother chimed in.
"That's why I told the both of them to bring me someone they love. If she had brought home the right man back then, and not that gold digger, then I wouldn't ask her to marry him." The old man said angrily and exhaled.
"Also, your dear son brought a fake girlfriend to me to break off his engagement, and now she is with someone else. How do you think that looks on our family?" He continued, upset and glaring at Alan even though he can't see him.
"You must to get married now or you can forget about becoming the next patriarch, and also, given your condition, it is very compulsory," he replied angrily.
"Father, the Miner family went into ruin three years ago, and even Miner himself is still in prison. Forming a bond with them is just like staining our name," Sasha said again to convince him.
"He is the one who ruined the relationship back then and caused this mess, let him fix it now." Grandfather insisted and stood up to leaves.
Sasha turned to her husband impatiently, knowing her father-in-law is pushing the Miner's on them because of Alan's condition.
"Are you not going to say something? Sasha asked, turning to her husband.
Williams sighed, rubbing his temple,
"On this matter, I will let Alan decide on his own," Williams replied and faced Alan, who had been quiet since the beginning of their discussion.
"If you really agree with your grandfather, then make sure to bring her home by this weekend. Then, we will discuss further, and if not, I won't force you," he said and also left.
Without a word to respond, Alan signal to one of th servants to help him and went back inside the house to hia study.
"Mom, I think you should just let this matter be. And personally, I think this is a good idea. Look at it like this: which rich young lady will want to marry him the way he is?" Harley said, drawing closer to Sasha.
"It is better to choose her. Then, we will have someone to take care of him, and also relieve you of your stress, and most importantly, we will be able to control her however we like," Harley said, and Sasha remained quiet, casting a skeptical eye at her.
"But still..."
"Mom, think of all the stress you had to go through taking care of him. All that's important is ensuring grandfather doesn't make someone else his heir." Harly persuaded further seeing Sasha is already giving in.
She is already ill-fated with the man she got married to, there is no reason for Alan not to suffer the same.
"Okay,"
...
Alan sat down in his study with a cigarette in one hand and his phone in the other. Kellie, his assistant and older by a few years knocked on the door and made her way in.
"Sir," Kellie said as she entered. Alan raised his hand to indicate that he was listening.
"I tracked the location of Miss Vienna and her family. She is living in the countryside with her sister and mother, and also a man called Nisan who lives together with them." She reported.
Alan's interest got pricked hearing an familiar name and raised his brows with curiosity.
kellie nodded in understanding and went on to explain.
"He is the illegitimate son of Brook, he was banished from the house."
Alan looked away, pulling out the cigarette and Kellie waited for a few seconds before she continued.
"Mrs. Miner is in the hospital, and they needs a lot of money to take care of her and bring her to the city," she said, indicating that's all and waited.
Alan remained quiet after listening to her.
"Set up a meeting with her. I don't want to hear no for an answer. Give her a condition she won't be able to resist," he instructed.
"Sir, is the contract really necessary? I fear Miss Vienna might be upset and refuse. After all, what happened..."
"Then make sure she doesn't." He snapped and Kellie immediately apologize.
"Okay, sir. Is there anything else you would like me to do for you?"
"What about Karen?"
"Just news about his engagement to Miss Benita, and a lot of public appearances."
"You can go for now, and take those files with you. They are not for any other eyes to see," he said, and she picked the files and left.
