CHAPTER 1 "What is this about ma'am?" Liam asked, staring at the figure in front of him. "Not only is he poor, he has also lost his common sense." His supposed mother-in-law, Mrs Bria said alongside her son. Her malicious voice could be heard as she tapped her foot impatiently. "Maami, please let's sort this out amicably, things will soon be as they were before," He started saying but was quickly shut up by her, her eyes scrutinizing him disgustedly. "Crap! I don't need your stinky story, my daughter deserves something better than your wretched soul.
Just sign the damn divorce paper and save me from this stress," He heard Mrs. Bria say with a scowl on her face. "Good riddance to rubbish!" he heard her say again with a scoff. His hands trembled in pain, he looked at the agreement and was frozen in shock, and memories of his wife flashed in his mind. He had so many words to say to her but was trying to refrain from it. After all, she was his mother-in-law. Though their relationship wasn't the nicest, he knew his wife loved him so much and the little ups and downs occasionally weren't something he couldn't handle. "Hazel will never agree to this," He said to her with confidence. His mother-in-law's impatient laughter echoed around the small room which he had turned into his office. "Hazel will definitely agree to this because she is tired of living in deprivation, she is better than all of this," Mrs Bria said again making his heart clench in pain. "I know that Maami, I'm trying my best. You know this happened all because I decided to get married to Hazel. I will build my company soon and I am very sure that it will be at the top soon." He tried explaining to her. "This is not a fairytale boy, things don't work like that, just sign the fucking papers already. You don't deserve my sister," he heard Alex say angrily. The foolish boy had always had something against him. "My dear Liam, I am not ready to listen to your pitiful story. Well, you were wealthy before. That is in the past! You can't afford to cater for my daughter's needs and it is beginning to take a toll on her, I can't allow her to leave in penury. Never!" Mrs Bria shrieked angrily. "But why? Why all this sudden attitude? This wasn't how you behaved the first time you laid your eyes on me. Money isn't everything, I have found my happiness in your daughter, don't take it away from me," Liam pleaded, trying to refrain from the tears that were about to drop from his eyes. "Don't be silly Liam, you can't find your happiness in my daughter while you deprive her of hers. I am not supposed to spill this but you look so pitiful and this is the least I can do for you. Right now your wife is about to be promoted to a manager in YKL industries, that's not the only good news. She is about to be engaged to the sole heir of the property." Bria said with an air of pride. "My new son-in-law is the CEO of the biggest company in New York, just sign the papers please," she said in a fake pity tone. "My daughter will finally get the luxurious life that she deserves," she said happily. "What do you mean by that?" he asked. Hazel had told me that she was going on a business trip, I remember her telling me that it was for our betterment. What was all this her mother was saying? "You have to be kidding me!" he shouted angrily. Leaving his office abruptly, several thoughts ran through his mind. He could hear Hazel's mother and her brother laughing. "This must be a dream," he thought to himself as he got into his rickety scooter. The engine roared as he started heading to YKL. Managing to focus on the road, he finally got to YKL Industries. The biggest in New York, after this was his family's industry. When he was younger, Liam's father had told him to make sure he got to the top when he became the CEO, which couldn't happen. His father had always wanted to beat YKL industries, no doubt there was enmity between their families and that was what made him very shocked. "Will Hazel be able to betray my trust by getting married to my enemy? I sacrificed everything for us to be together and this was all I got. Hazel never complained, it was her mother always doing the worst," he said to himself trying to convince himself. Taking a deep breath to calm himself, he barged into the building ignoring all security protocols. His emotions were at their peak and he didn't care about the consequences of his action, he wanted to know the truth. "Stop Mr," he heard the voice of the CEO's secretary as he opened the door to meet the most compromising situation ever. His wife, Hazel sat down on a cushion chair while Anderson was on his knees, she seemed nervous for some reason. Her attention was turned to him as her face suddenly became pale. "Li..am..." she stuttered as he glared at her. "What the fuck is going on here?" Anderson asked angrily as he stood up, facing Liam. He felt his blood boil out of rage. Thankfully, he didn't see them having sex or anything. But he was still disappointed. His eyes darted around the room and finally landed on a fruit knife. His head was telling him to do it but his heart was saying otherwise. "No, she isn't worth it. Hazel and her stupid family aren't worth my time in jail. I could use that time to do something better, I wouldn't murder because of her," he said to himself. "Hazel was everything I had always wanted in a woman, a wonderful and beautiful lady with excellent manners, she was good wife material and was also good in bed but right now she has betrayed me." He drew a really deep breath while muttering to himself. He staggered backward as Anderson pushed him. "Don't you dare touch me!" Liam growled as he tried to control his anger." All this while Hazel had made me believe that she was on a business trip, she was busy warming the bed of this bastard!" He felt pain everywhere, not being able to explain how he felt was just so painful. "Please Liam, I can explain," He heard her calm voice but he knew better. He could see how nervous and ashamed she was. "Please just go home, we will settle this later,"she uttered while bowing her head in shame. Anderson raised his fist but Liam was quick to catch it. He aimed for his nose as he continuously punched him angrily. He fell on the floor, placing his leg on Anderson's face. He stared at his supposed wife. "I did everything for you Hazel! I was ready to sacrifice everything for you but this is what you pay me with?" He asked her, pain evident in his voice. "Please Liam, just calm down," she said, ignoring his words. "I have signed the divorce paper, come to Municipal Hall for the conclusion," Liam said finally before storming off. Several emotions flowed, he felt hurt, betrayed, worthless, used! He dragged his body out of the building as he stood outside, frozen. He reached for his phone and dialed his uncle's number. "Withdraw all the investment from Hazel's company," he said before ending the call abruptly. He didn't want to talk to anyone at this point, all he needed was time alone to gather himself and start all over again. Getting on his scooter, he drove away.
CHAPTER 2
Liam's uncle dropped the phone after noticing Liam wasn't going to say anything again. "Poor boy," he thought. He had foreseen a situation like this a few years ago when his nephew, Liam had proposed to marry her.
The family had wanted him to be married to someone else, a rich family like theirs but Liam had opposed and left the house. Grandpa Brooker, who was very short-tempered, had gotten angry and cut him off from his access to their properties.
He did not only do that but also exiled his grandson from the city, he wasn't only rich but had power and fame. He controlled the whole country underneath.
He was far beyond stunned, the couple had just gotten married a few years ago with the massive love they had shown each other, he couldn't believe they would be divorced in just a few years.
Grandpa Brooker was right all along, none of these peasants were to be trusted at all. His nephew has made a big mistake trusting them and now he had to pay for the consequences. His heart leaped for joy knowing that Liam will soon be back home, and he will resume as the sole heir of the Brooker properties.
He has always wished for these for a long time and now his wish will come to pass, shrugging happily he went inside to break the news to some of the family members. Several questions ran through his mind, why did they break up their marriage?
Liam had begged him to invest in his wife's property and he did just that. Just to ensure that they were at least living comfortably. He was worried about his nephew, wanting to see him now so he could ask him all of his questions. "Children and making mistakes. Only if he had listened to the family," Liam's uncle said, shaking his head with a sad smile.
________________________________
Liam, standing there to regain his senses before wanting to get on the bike. The cold breeze hit him harshly as he poured out all his emotions. Hearing footsteps behind him, he turned slightly to see his wife and the supposed "playboy". Trying to control himself, he continued watching them. His wife carried the limping man, who in turn held her waist so close to himself.
Anderson shot Liam a smirk while doing so, he only wanted to frustrate and provoke Liam. Liam knew what he was doing, and took his eyes away from them.
Anderson was very annoyed, he wanted to be back home so he could plan again. His plan had failed when this son of a bitch interrupted their conversation. His only mission was to get into the leg of this bitch, he had tried convincing her but she held back saying she was married.
He drugged the water which he served to her, if she had drunk it, he would have had his way with her. She was very vulnerable, especially since her family was pushing her into this. Glaring at Liam again, he wished he could teach him a very good lesson.
Not only did he disrupt his plans but also almost beat him to a pulp. "I will kill that son of a bitch!" he mutters angrily to himself. He had never been disgraced like this before and the two of them had to pay.
Getting into his car, the car drove away. Hazel watched the car drive away, just as she was about to turn to Liam, she noticed his bike moving speedily. Now left alone, she burst into fresh tears.
She wanted Liam to understand but he wasn't understanding. Her mother was forcing her to do things that she didn't want. All through her ride home, she continued shedding tears.
Liam arrived at his house, and soon after his wife also arrived. They both stared at each other with so many emotions but rather remained quiet. Liam moved away from her and started packing his properties.
He didn't have many things to pack here as he had only a few clothes and shoes. Hazel stared at him with tears in her eyes, she definitely didn't want all of this that was happening. She wanted to give him all her deposits so at least he could start a new life somewhere.
Her love for him was unmeasured, she didn't just love him because of his physical looks but also mentally. He was an intelligent young man but he had been working so poorly with his bachelor's degree.
He could barely raise money for the family and everything was on her. This wasn't the life she had always envisioned for herself. She wished for something better than all of this.
Slowly, disappointment started masking her pain. She was disappointed with him because he had made her mother push her into something she didn't want, only if he was able to work harder!
However, she hadn't expected him to agree to the divorce so easily. Did he even love her at all? Her body shook, thinking about the possibility that her mother had been right all along. Did he only want to use her?
She felt incomplete, staring at him packing his belongings. She felt like she was losing something so important in her life. Her hands slowly wanted to reach him but her mother and brother immediately entered the room with mockery evident in their tone. "We are here to celebrate your divorce," she heard her mother say with an excited tone.
"Mom, stop this!" She tried saying but they weren't listening to her. They danced around while laughing at Liam. "Don't take that Liam, didn't Hazel buy it for your birthday?
Don't you have shame, you don't have the right to take that," Hazel's mother said, moving towards him to snatch the Gucci shoe her daughter had bought for him. "You don't deserve to take anything expensive in this house!" She said pointing at him. Liam ignored them and continued packing the rest of his properties.
Hazel suddenly heard something shattering on the floor, running to where they were. She looked in horror as she noticed her brother had thrown a picture frame of Liam and his mother. She couldn't bear the hostility in the room so she moved to the next room.
Liam suddenly turned to Hazel's brother, Alex and threw him a punch. Rushing to separate them, Liam pushed her away making her fall on the floor.
She stared at her brother as he received the beating of his life. "How dare you do this to my son!" She heard her mother's angry voice as she marched to him. Liam raised his hands to slap his mother in law but refrained himself before leaving the house.
"How dare he?" Hazel's mother asked angrily as she paced around the room. He is going to pay.
Hazel was beyond shocked, she hadn't seen this side of Liam before. He was always nice to everyone. She just hoped she hadn't broken him.
CHAPTER 3
Hazel was treating Alex's injuries as he groaned in pain. The reality now hitting her, it was true. She had divorced her husband and he had left her. She slumped on the chair as everything registered in her mind.
The vibration of the phone jolted her from her thoughts, it felt like forever since she was seated on the couch. "It's Anderson," she heard her brother's voice with excitement evident in it. She watched as her mother looked at her brother enthusiastically, expecting him to tell her what Anderson had said. They didn't even care about her, all her mother cared about was getting Anderson's attention.
"What did he say?" she heard her mother ask once her brother dropped the phone. "I have great news! We are finally rich!" he exclaimed, hugging his mother. "Hazel, come here." her mother ordered her as she reluctantly walked to where they were seated. "Anderson just called," she heard Alex say as she scoffed internally. "She already knew that," she told her brother who scoffed. "He said I should call him when everyone was here," Alex told her mother. He dialed Anderson's number as she tapped her foot impatiently, she just wanted to be alone right now.
Anderson's voice came up as he picked up his call. "Babe," he called out to her like they were couples. Not wanting to annoy her mom, she answered him. He was willing to give her whatever position she wanted only if she got married to him.
She was more than stunned, was this his plan all along, or just a coincidence? Before she could reply to him, her brother had Intervened with a scream. "When is the wedding? She will of course marry you," her brother had said, not even caring about her opinion. Anderson said he wanted the divorce process to be over then they can choose a date for their wedding.
Of course, her mother was more than happy with what was happening. Her mother had even gone ahead to report Liam's earlier action to Anderson. Saying Liam was a big threat and they had to take him out.
Trying to stop her mother was a futile act as her mother didn't even bulge. Anderson had replied saying he was going to deal with Liam severely and her mother could not have been happier. She watched in horror as her brother even offered to get some goons to beat up Liam. "Mother, I can't do this! I can't get married to Anderson, I just got divorced and..." she was still saying when her mother cut her off.
"Better listen to my advice, aren't you tired of living in penury?" Her mother asked. Her mother hissed before storming out of the room. She burst into tears, feeling all alone in this world.
Liam walked around the street noticing the huge profit he could make if he invested in a business there. It was a very busy area and so a business venture was going to earn more profit here, it was just that it required money to set up a business here.
He watched everywhere as he calculated in his head and made a mental note to discuss it with his uncle. He was going to make achievements in this city and become more successful. At least add to his family's wealth. He honestly wasn't planning this because of his ex-wife, he never had plans to reconcile or see her again after their final divorce process.
He was rather doing this for his own self, to make himself happy. He didn't care about his ex-wife or her selfish desires anymore. He was never going to reveal his real identity to her again, at least to satisfy her selfish interest that she had left a poor man for a rich man.
Shoving the thoughts about his marriage away, he continued making research. If someone else should see him, they would have thought he was just roaming about but Liam was rather taking notes about the environment.
It was the morning of the day she dreaded, she didn't want this but did she have any option? She groaned internally as she got ready for her final divorce process.
Tears stung her eyes as she managed to get dressed for the occasion. Getting there, she saw him, standing there looking all ready. Was he not hurt by this like her? "Are you sure about this, this is the last chance you have to back out," she heard her lawyer say to her. "I am ready," she hesitated before finally saying that. . It felt like a dream as everything came by and ended. She was no longer married to Liam! Reality struck her as she heaved a long breath.
Walking to him, she shot him an awkward smile. "Maybe you should leave the city," she said awkwardly. She still loved him, knowing how Anderson was. She knew he didn't just make empty threats on that day. She wanted to make sure he was safe even after their divorce. "That's none of your business, Hazel!" he said, irritation evident in his voice. After trying to persuade him for a while and he wasn't having any of it, she decided to let him be. "Can we at least have one last hang out?" she asked, her voice stuttering.
She wanted to make out with him, at least for the last time. She was going to get married to Anderson soon, everything was just so overwhelming and she was beginning to lose her mind. "Never Hazel, it seems you no longer have shame?" he spat angrily.
She was now his ex-wife, he couldn't get over the fact that she left him all because of power and wealth. The thoughts alone disgusted him and he didn't want to have anything to do with her anymore.
He walked away from her and headed to his company where he was working. Deciding to shove away all bad thoughts, he walked into the company but couldn't ignore the stares and silent whispers that his other colleague gave him. They have never given a fuck about him since he started working here, it only means that they had found out the truth. The hairs on his body stood as he became anxious. Just as he got to his desk, he met a letter awaiting him.
Opening the letter, he was met with the shock of his life. He had been dismissed for absolutely no reason. He glanced at the paper in shock, something doesn't seem right though. It felt like a superior was controlling them to do all of this! Someone was definitely behind these, that he was sure of.
