Chapter 1 CRUEL REALITY

3 cm invasive tumor in situ... Stage 3... Metastasis is present...

Kendall's hands trembled as she read her test result. She swallowed thick lumps of saliva that were about to choke her.

"Wh- what does... this mean, doctor?"

Her voice was trembling so was her whole body, coupled with her labored breathing. Even though she knew what it meant, she rather lived in denial.

"Miss Kendall," Doctor Sophia took off her glasses and focused on the patient in front of her.

"You have stage three cervical cancer." She dropped the heartbreaking news.

"No... I don't... doctor, this is not my result." Tears rolled down Kendall's cheeks as she kept on arguing. There was no way that she would accept this result as hers.

She only had pain and heavy bleeding... And a few minor symptoms. She was sure that there was a mix-up somewhere. There had to be.

"I can't have cancer," Kendall heaved a sigh. It felt like her whole world was crumbling before her and she was too weak to put the smallest pieces together.

"How?" She stuttered. "I'm not married, I don't even have kids." "How can I have cancer?"

"If you will, we can go over some fertility options." Doctor Sophia used a calm approach. She had seen tons of patients break down before her.

"There's room for in-vitro fertilization before the surgery, but that has to be done as soon as possible because you need immediate intervention..."

Kendall didn't wait for Doctor Sophia to be done before she stormed out of her office in tears. She didn't know where exactly she was going, but she kept running, her vision was clouded by tears.

She flagged down a taxi and heaped herself on the back seat, wiping her eyes and snorting in between.

"Where to?" The driver asked, looking at her through the front mirror, but didn't say a word, not wanting to invade her privacy.

"Anywhere," Kendall hissed through her gritted teeth. "Just keep moving."

Without her vague instructions, the driver reared the engine to life and followed her order. All he knew was that she had to tell him to stop at some point, or he would when he eventually got tired.

"Damn it," Kendall sighed, punching the digits on her phone's screen. "Pick up."

Alicia' popped up on the screen when she dialed the phone over and over again. Alicia was her best friend, and right now, Kendall needed all the support that there was.

Still, the call was diverted to voicemail. She wasn't sure if to pop up at her house unannounced or if Alicia would be home. Defeated, she tossed her phone back in her purse and stared out the window as the car kept moving.

This had to be a nightmare. There was no way she was accepting that result. Tomorrow, she will go to another hospital for a proper check-up, and then another, till the result changes. At this point, she would spend the last of her savings.

"Stop!" she exclaimed abruptly, more surprised at her hasty decision.

The driver stepped on the break, bringing the car to a forced halt as the tires screeched. He turned to look at the passenger, to be sure if everything was okay with her.

Unaware of the driver's worry, Kendall paid him off and headed to the club that was just down the street. It was a place she frequented with Alicia when they were either popping bottles for their wins or doing the bottoms up as their crazy challenge.

Seeing she wanted to put down her sorrows in liquor, the driver shook his head in pity and drove off.

"Twelve shots of whiskey," Kendall recklessly said to the bartender.

The bartender blinked nonstop, shocked at her order, causing Kendall to slam her hand on the counter.

"What?" Kendall rolled her eyes. "Do as you're told." She grunted in frustration. She wasn't this spontaneous, well, cancer happened.

"I'm sorry," the bartender muttered and left to pour her order. Minutes later, she returned with Kendall's orders.

In return, Kendall slipped over her debit card and pulled the tray of shots to herself. She swiftly took a glass and downed the contents with a gulp.

"Whoa!" She blew hot air and chuckled wryly. The next second, she laughed sporadically and began sobbing.

A bit composed, she sniffled and wiped her cheeks dry. "Mind your business," she warned the bartender and those who stared before she took another shot.

"Vodka on the rock," Damien's cool voice blended smoothly with the background music. "Add her bills to mine."

"I don't need your pity," Kendall grunted and looked up at the stranger.

The neo-blue light of the club settled on her face. She gulped the third and the fourth and the fifth.

"Easy, damsel," Damien smirked. "How about we don't call it pity, say I see what I like, and I go for it." He shrugged.

He was tall and could pass off as the most handsome guy in the room. His piercing amber-green eyes pulled her into their depths, and he had this aura about him that was hard to shake off.

"Damien," he said, seeing that she was checking him out.

"Your house or mine?" Kendall seized him with her gaze

"Better yet, I have a room," he winked.

Damien drank a generous amount from his glass and set it on the counter before leading her to his room.

"Naughty, huh?"

His hand slipped around her waist and he pulled her to himself, smacking her delicate frame on his hard mass, with her boobs bouncing with reckless abandon.

Kendall moaned against his neck, partly gaping her lips to suck in the cool air. She wasn't sure if it was the dozens of shots she had, but damn! She was too aroused to stop.

He trapped her against the wall and claimed her lips in hot passionate kisses. Needing more at once, she wrapped her arms around his neck and anchored herself to his frame.

He struggled to open the door, clutching her to himself as they managed to get into the room in one piece.

Kendall pulled backward, running her tongue along her lips, and biting down on her bottom lip.

She shrugged off every freaking fabric and stood stack naked, watching him gawk.

His eyes roamed along her flawless skin, trailing every curve of her soft bodice, and settling on the pink cookie in between her thighs, desperate to be bruised.

Claiming her curves, he guided her to the bed, gently leveling her on it, with his bulge poking into her belly button. The smooth fabric of his clothes is the only thing separating their bare skin.

"Oh, my god." She groans. "Take me already."

Getting their clothes off himself was hectic. He returned to where he belonged, right on top of her, and slightly parted her legs for his penetration.

"Hmm."

Kendall groaned, clutching the sheets for support. His length filled her up, causing her to jerk forward.

In a smooth rhythm, Damien rode them, gentle at first, until each thrust got rough and harder by the second. Climax ripped through them, with him collapsing on her, panting and sweating, before rolling on his side.

Kendall drifted to sleep beside the stranger.

Her ringing tone made her jolt from the bed as she reached for it. It was Alicia. Damien was still sleeping peacefully.

Shrugging into her dress, she packed the rest of her things, and sneaked out of the room, to her taunting reality.

Chapter 2 HASTY DECISION

"How could you?"

Alicia was furious as her voice took over the living room. This had to be a joke.

She ran down to Kendall's house after seeing the multiple mixed calls only to be given double strikes; Kendall hadn't only slept with a stranger, but she had already called Doctor Sophia, saying that she was ready for the IVF procedure.

"What would I have done?" Kendall wasn't having it. Matter of fact, she was done trying to explain herself.

"Anything..." "Just not messing around." She shrugged.

Kendall hated that she was diagnosed with cancer, and had woken up in bed with a stranger, with the effect of the alcohol wearing off and she felt terrible. Like every other girl, she had the fantasy of a small family and having her babies, not opting for a sperm donor.

"I'm sorry for not being by your side at the time you needed me most," Alicia apologized.

"You don't have to be." "All that I expect from you, is love, support, and kind words..."

"That's if you are dealing with so much, and you're still on the right track, yes!" Alicia stated clearly. "Not when you're clearly losing it!"

Kendall sighed and just went to the bar. All she did lately was drink and make hasty decisions, one that might ruin her. Just maybe she didn't care anymore. Doctor Sophia had told her she needed thousands of dollars for her surgery, and it was worse because she also wanted an IVF procedure.

Her bank account was literally beeping red, and she had nowhere to turn to. Alicia was almost as jobless as her, as her work barely took care of her needs.

"You're right, I'm losing it." Kendall ran the tip of her fingers on the different brands of alcohol. "I doubt you'd understand." "You're not the one diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, of course."

"It's not the end of the world..."

"Oh!" Kendall laughed so loudly that she began to cough from the effect. "What is the end of the world, Alicia?" "Getting smashed like a potato by a huge car?" "Or jumping in the ocean and drowning to death?..."

She shrugged and randomly just pulled out a bottle of liquor, waiting for Alicia to respond, but it was like the cat caught her tongue.

"Because that may be me soon... Anyone of them." Kendall was being naughty and Alicia knew better than to banter at that point.

"Kendall, everything will be fine." "We can always fix this." Her voice was calm as she tried to encourage Kendall.

"There's no 'we' in this, Alicia, I'm sorry, but it's a fact." She poured herself a glass and began drinking.

"Enough of the drinking," Alicia tried to snatch the glass from her, but she stopped her with a lifted hand.

"You shouldn't be taking that," Alicia made another attempt to get the glass from her grip, but Kendall raised it above her head.

"What are you now?" "My mother or doctor?"

"Both," Alicia didn't mind. "I'm so sorry that you had to go through that alone," she mumbled, feeling bad that she didn't respond to any of her calls when her best friend needed her the most.

In her defense, she was attending to clients all day, showing them around, from one property to another. Alicia is a Realtor, and a beginner as well, so she had to put in the extra work to get things done.

"I'm fine, you don't have to bother much," Kendall lied through her teeth.

"No, you're not," Alicia wasn't believing her lies. She knew Kendall better than that.

"I'm fine... It's just cancer... It's not the end of the world after all." Kendall's tone was laced with so much sarcasm. Unexpectedly, she broke down, crying like a child.

"Oh, my darling," Alicia whimpered as she swiftly ran to the bar to meet the crying baby. She held Kendall in her bosom for a while, patting her gently.

Needing to vent and let out her pent-up emotions, Kendall began to cry profusely, latching onto her best friend like she needed air.

"I have no plans for my life, no good paying job, not even a baby as compensation... Just cancer!"

"I'm sorry," Alicia kept consoling her.

Kendall's phone buzzed on the center table and Alicia whipped her head around in search for it.

"I'll go get it," she said to Kendall and let go of the warm embrace before she left to retrieve the phone as promised.

She looked at the caller's ID to see that it was Doctor Sophia. She stretched the phone over to Kendall.

"It's Doctor Sophia," Alicia mouthed.

"Thanks," Kendall took her phone from her, wiped her face, and cleared her voice before swiping the answer icon.

"Hello, Miss Kendall," Doctor Sophia's cheerful voice beamed.

"Hi," she managed a response.

"We need to see you in person, so we will discuss everything before the procedure." She paused in between words. "Also, we would need you to go over the consent form and sign..."

"There is no problem with that," Kendall responded.

"Stop by tomorrow noon." "This has to be done as soon as possible."

The call ended before Kendall could say anything.

"Is everything okay?" Alicia asked, concern laced in her tone.

Kendall nodded, not wanting to share much with her best friend because she would talk her out of it.

It was already 12: 10 pm.

At the hospital's reception, Kendall sat and waited for Doctor Sophia. She was wearing a pair of black trousers, a blue tank top and sunshade.

"Kendall Williams." The receptionist called out. "The last room on your left."

Gracefully, Kendall strolled to the office and knocked.

"Kendall?" "Come in," Doctor Sophia responded. She got in and sat on a vacant seat opposite the doctor.

"Welcome, Miss Kendall," Doctor Sophia began and Kendall just flashed her a fake smile. "When do we begin..." "I mean when do you want the implant?"

"Now." Kendall was as blunt as a knife.

Chapter 3 TWIST OF FATE

"Anywhere but home."

Jason informed Lucas after getting into the back of his black-tainted SUV. He was done with work for the day, but for fear of his mother breathing down his throat, he'd rather stay out late.

"Alright, sir," Lucas, his driver responded.

He didn't need to think twice, he knew the exact place that his boss frequented when he needed to escape his realities. Slowly, he increased the volume of the music, trying to soothe his boss.

"Turn it off."

Jason hissed, tugging on his tie that was suddenly too becoming suffocating.

"I'm sorry, sir."

He was already exhausted from today's hassle, but he had to quickly fix a few meetings for tomorrow. His eyes were glued to his tab the whole time, as he immersed himself in work.

The rest of the journey to the club was calm and boring. In about half an hour, they arrived at the spot and Jason went to the bar. They didn't do much security check-up on him.

"Brandy is fine." He told the bartender who jotted down his order. He looked around, doing a quick sweep of the arena, unsure of what he was looking for.

The bartender returned to his side a few minutes later with a tray of his glass of alcohol. Normally, he would choose a section in the VIP lounge, particularly the extreme where he felt he had a bit of privacy, and relax with his drink. But today, he remained seated on the bar stool.

The last time he was reckless, he was lucky enough to have a beautiful damsel to himself... Well, even though she didn't pass off as the one-night-stand kinda lady, he hoped that he would meet her again. Her face was a bit too blurred.

For long hours, he drank in silence, with his expectation fading away by seconds. Accepting the fact that he may never see her again, he took the last drop in his glass, paid for his drink, and left the bar.

"Take me home."

Lucas was shocked. He flipped his watch to see that this wasn't close to the time he would decide to go home when having a troubled day.

"Do I have to repeat myself?"

*** ***

4 Weeks Later.

Kendall was lying on a hospital bed, wearing the uniform and getting ready for the implant. Beside her, Alicia sat with a blank expression. She was never a fan of it.

In her defense, Kendall had so much to do, with the top of the list being putting her scattered life in order and not adding a baby to it. She tried talking her out of it, but Kendall was the stubborn type.

After Kendall had stormed Doctor Sophia's office, demanding an immediate implant, Doctor Sophia had managed to convince her to return weeks later, when her body would be best prepared for the procedure.

She had given Kendall some hormonal drugs to boost her system and duly explained the details of the pregnancy procedure from scratch so that she would be aware of the complications involved, and for one in her shoes, it was doubled.

Also, Doctor Sophia made provision for a sperm donor when Kendall told her she didn't have any partner to help complete the process. Done with the basic preparation, they are here for the main procedure.

"Alicia, come on," Kendall kicked her feet in a slight protest. "Do we need to go over this again?"

"Over what?"

"You don't have to play dumb." Kendall brushed her off. "You look sad."

"No, I don't." She picked up a slice of apple from Kendall's plate to munch on and shrugged a 'you see?' to prove her point. "I'm just not happy."

Kendall groaned. "Isn't it the same thing?"

"Uh..."

"Jeez, Alicia!" She whimpered. "All I'm asking for is that you should be happy for me, just for a minute."

"Well, you literally spent all you have on this baby,"

"At least, I have one now..."

Alicia puffed, defeated. "Fine, Kendi," she called her by her pet name. "At least I'm having a goddaughter out of it."

They chuckled and ate their fruit slices.

"Miss Kendall," a nurse called when she got into my ward. "I'm here to assist you to the theatre."

"I see you're ready." Alicia pouted and pulled her friend in for a big hug. This was going to be a major milestone in her life.

Kendall waved at Alicia before leaving for the theater, trailing behind the nurse. The theater was spacious with modern equipment and proper lighting.

They motioned her to lie flat on the bed with her stomach facing upwards. Her legs were raised, flexed at the knee, and secured by a strap in a lithotomy position.

Somehow, Kendall was scared. Her bestie's words came hard on her, as she tried to imagine if she was ready to embrace motherhood. It was an entirely new path with so many responsibilities. Here was the wrong place to question her decisions, but she couldn't help it.

"Hi, Miss Kendall," a new female doctor, Doctor Anna, greeted her patient behind her face mask. She was the lady who took her through the last stage of the preparation as Doctor Sophia had other commitments.

After a while, the implant was done, with Kendall was ready to leave when Doctor Sophia walked into the theatre. Regardless of her wearing a nose mask, the multiple creases on her forehead were a clear enough indication that she was worried and something was wrong.

She called aside her colleague, Doctor Anna, that just finished off with the implant. Their murmuring was not audible as Kendall tried to listen in on their conversation.

Suddenly, Doctor Anna's countenance changed, as she cupped her first and pressed it against her lips. At this point, Kendall couldn't ignore the obvious signs.

Instantly she sat up, ignoring the nurses who tried to make her remain rested on the bed.

"What's happening? Doctor Sophia?" Her voice was shaky as she looked from Doctor Sophia to Doctor Anna. "I need an answer, now."
