Elena's pov
The heavy crystal chandeliers of the family ballroom glowed brightly, but my entire world was crumbling into dark pieces.
One minute I was standing in a pretty silk dress, holding a glass of juice and smiling at the wealthy guests.
The next minute, two huge armed security guards grabbed my arms tightly. They dragged me away from the music and pushed me into a cold, dark holding room in the back of the estate.
"Let go of me! What are you doing?" I cried out as my voice shook.
They did not answer. They just shoved me inside and slammed the door shut.
On the glass table in front of me was a thick black folder. The head of security stepped forward and opened it revealing secret corporate files, financial blueprints, and private codes stolen from the company database.
"We found these hidden inside the bottom drawer of your bedroom dresser, Miss Vale," the security chief said in a hard voice. "You stole them."
I shook my head in complete horror, tears filling my eyes. "No! I didn't! I have never seen those papers in my life! Someone put them there to frame me! Please, you have to believe me!"
Nobody listened to me. The guards stood like stone walls, watching me cry.
Suddenly, the heavy wooden door swung open and Julian walked into the room.
My heart jumped at the sight of him.
Julian was the man I loved with every piece of my soul. He was the man I trusted more than anyone else in the world. I felt a small spark of hope in my chest.
I got up and rushed toward him, my hands shaking.
"Julian! Thank goodness!" I sobbed, reaching for his hand. "Tell them it's a mistake! Tell them I would never hurt you or your family! Please, Julian, save me!"
Julian did not reach back. He just stood there, tall in his dark suit, staring down at me.
His eyes, which used to look at me with warmth and soft affection, were now as cold as ice.
They were filled with pure hatred. Recent leaks had caused his family business to lose millions of dollars, and his anger had turned him completely blind.
He pulled his hand away as if my touch was poison.
"Don't touch me," Julian said. His voice was so quiet and cold it made me shiver.
"Julian, please!" I fell to my knees on the cold floor, wrapping my arms around my stomach. "Look at me! It's me, Elena! I love you! I didn't steal anything!"
"Enough already and stop lying!" Julian snapped, his voice suddenly exploding like thunder. "The files were in your room! Your name is on the digital signature! I gave you my heart, Elena. I trusted you with my family's legacy. And you sold us out to our enemies!"
"I didn't! I swear on my life, I didn't!" I begged, weeping so hard I could barely breathe.
"Please, just listen to me for one minute! Check the cameras! Ask anyone! I was with you all day!"
"I don't want to hear another word from your mouth," Julian said. He looked down at me with so much disgust that it felt like a physical blow to my chest. He turned his back to me and looked at the guards. "Take her away. Get this thief out of my sight."
"Julian, no! Please!" I screamed as the guards grabbed my shoulders and pulled me off the floor.
Julian stopped at the doorway. He didn't look back at me, but his final words sliced straight through my heart like a sharp blade.
"I wish I had never met you, Elena," he whispered cold-heartedly. "You mean nothing to me."
The guards dragged me down the long, dark hallway while I screamed his name. They pushed open the heavy back exit of the mansion and threw me out onto the hard pavement outside the tall metal gates.
Heavy rain began to pour from the sky. It soaked my hair, my face, and my dress within seconds. I had no shoes, no coat, no money, and nowhere to go. I was completely broken, deeply humiliated, and left all alone in the freezing dark.
I sat on the wet ground, my body shaking violently. I squeezed my eyes shut and sobbed until my throat burned. My entire life was over. The man I loved hated me. His family wanted to destroy me.
As I wiped the cold rainwater from my face, a sudden wave of dizziness hit me. A sharp, strange ache tightened deep inside my stomach.
I gasped, reaching down with trembling fingers to pull my small, wet clutch bag close to my chest. Inside that bag was a tiny plastic stick I had hidden just two hours before the party began. It was the test with two bright pink lines, the secret I had been so excited to share with Julian tonight.
I was pregnant with his baby, but I didn't get the chance to even tell him about it.
I shivered in the dark, holding my stomach tightly to keep the tiny life inside me safe.
Suddenly, the loud crunch of gravel echoed through the empty street. A pair of bright yellow headlights cut through the dark rain, stopping just a few feet away from where I sat on the ground. A heavy car door clicked open.
Footsteps slammed against the wet pavement, moving fast toward me.
"Elena!" a panicked voice called out through the storm.
It wasn't Julian. It was Adrian, Julian's younger brother, his face pale with absolute terror. He dropped to his knees in the mud beside me and grabbed my shoulders.
"You have to get up right now!" He shouted over the roaring thunder. "They aren't just trying to frame you, Elena! They're coming to kill you!"
Before I could even speak, a sudden, blinding flash of light lit up the night sky behind us, followed by a loud, deafening explosion that shook the ground under our feet.
Elena's pov
The cheap motel room smelled like stale smoke and old rust.
I sat on the edge of the lumpy mattress, wrapping a thin, scratchy towel around my shivering shoulders.
Outside, the rain poured down against the cracked windowpane. My wet dress lay in a cold heap on the bathroom floor.
My hands trembled violently as I reached into my small bag. I pulled out the tiny plastic stick and stared at the two bright pink lines. I was really having Julian's baby.
Hot and bitter tears welled up in my eyes. How could the happiest discovery of my life happen on the exact night everything was torn away from me?
Suddenly, a quiet chime beeped from the tiny, prepaid phone Adrian had shoved into my hands right before he rushed me into a taxi.
I grabbed the phone with shaky fingers. A dark screen popped up with a high-priority video notification. It was a secret, encrypted message sent from Adrian's private account just minutes ago.
I pressed play.
Adrian's pale, terrified face filled the small screen. His eyes were wide, and sweat dripped down his forehead as he sat in the driver's seat of his car.
"Elena, listen to me very carefully," Adrian whispered frantically into the camera. The background noise hummed through his speakers. "I don't have much time. Julian is blind right now, but you are completely innocent. The corporate files in your room? They were planted by my father and stepmother, Vivian."
I gasped, pressing a hand against my mouth.
"They have been stealing billions from the company through offshore accounts for years," Adrian continued, his voice cracking with panic. "When they realized someone was getting close to discovering their money laundering ring, they needed a scapegoat. They picked you, Elena. They set you up so Julian would throw you away and never look for you again."
Fresh tears spilled over my cheeks. It wasn't Julian who built the trap, but he had believed it. He had thrown me out into the storm without a second thought.
"I attached a hidden file to this message," Adrian said, looking over his shoulder nervously. "It contains part of the financial ledger. I am driving to the main police station right now to hand over the original files and clear your name. Once Julian sees the truth, he will..."
Before Adrian could finish his sentence, a loud, violent crash echoed through his audio feed.
The video on my screen cut out instantly, replaced by a dark static signal.
My heart stopped. "Adrian?" I screamed at the tiny phone screen. "Adrian, answer me!"
Panicked, I grabbed the remote control from the nightstand and clicked on the small television hanging on the wall. The screen flickered to a live breaking news broadcast.
A news anchor's grave voice boomed through the quiet motel room. "We interrupt this program with urgent news. A luxury sedan belonging to the Sterling family has just suffered a catastrophic explosion on the downtown highway. Witnesses report seeing a massive fireball..."
The camera zoomed in on the highway. A car was engulfed in roaring, blinding orange flames.
My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. I fell off the bed and hit the cold carpet, sobbing so hard I couldn't breathe. Adrian was dead. They had killed him right on the street in broad daylight.
A quiet ding signaled another incoming file on the prepaid phone. It was an automated text message Adrian had set to send if his video was interrupted.
Elena, if you are reading this, I am already dead. They will stop at nothing to cover their tracks. They will kill anyone who knows the truth. Do not try to clear your name. Do not try to go back to Julian. Run. Change your name. Hide where no one can ever find you. And if you are carrying Julian's child, protect that baby with your life. It is the only innocent thing left.
I squeezed the phone in my fist until my knuckles turned white.
I looked back down at the positive pregnancy test resting on the nightstand. I couldn't save my relationship. I couldn't fix my reputation. The man I loved thought I was a monster, and his family was willing to murder their own blood to protect their evil secrets.
I wiped the tears from my cheeks, my fear slowly hardening into something tough and solid.
I pulled off my promise ring, the simple silver band Julian had given me a year ago, and dropped it into the trash can. I grabbed my bag, wrapped a dark sweater tight around my body, and looked in the mirror one last time at the broken girl staring back at me.
"You won't get my baby," I whispered to the empty room.
I opened the motel door, stepped out into the freezing rain, and vanished into the dark night.
Elena's pov
The freezing rain felt like thousands of tiny needles digging into my skin, but the ice settling inside my heart was far worse.
Two days had passed since the night the world burned down. Two days since Adrian's car exploded on live television. Two days since Julian looked into my eyes with pure hatred and told me he wished he had never met me.
I pulled my thin jacket tighter around my shivering body as I walked up to a dusty pawn shop at the edge of a tiny, forgotten town three states away from Manhattan. My shoes were soaked through, my socks caked with mud. Every step I took felt like walking on broken glass.
Inside the dim shop, a bell chimed loudly. I walked up to the high counter, my hands shaking uncontrollably as I reached into my pocket. I pulled out a simple silver chain, the last piece of jewelry I owned that hadn't been bought by the Sterling family and placed it on the glass counter.
"How much?" I asked, my voice dry and raspy.
The shopkeeper didn't even look up from his magazine. He picked up the chain with dirty fingers, weighed it casually, and tossed a crumpled five-dollar bill onto the counter. "Five bucks. Take it or leave it, lady."
"Five?" My eyes burned with fresh tears. "Please, sir. It's real silver. I just need enough for a warm meal and a bus ticket out of state. Please."
"Five dollars," he barked, his eyes narrowing as he glared at my mess of wet hair and dirt-stained clothes. "You look like a runaway or a junkie. Take the five before I call the cops to kick you out."
Fear spiked through my chest. The cops. If my name was run through any system, the Sterling family's high-powered legal team would flag it instantly.
Within an hour of Adrian's murder, every single one of my bank accounts had been frozen. My credit cards were blocked. My phone number was disconnected. They had stripped me of my identity, my money, and my dignity in a matter of seconds, turning me into a nameless ghost.
I snatched the crumpled bill, grabbed the tiny loaf of stale bread sitting on the counter by the door, and hurried back out into the freezing wind.
I sat on a rusty metal bench inside an open-air bus station, hidden in the shadows where the flickering streetlights couldn't reach me.
I tore off a small piece of bread and shoved it into my mouth. But the moment the food hit my stomach, a wave of severe morning sickness crashed over me.
I scrambled behind a trash bin, falling to my knees as I threw up until my ribs ached. I leaned my head against the cold brick wall, panting for air, holding my stomach with both arms.
"I'm sorry, little one," I sobbed into the dark, my tears falling fast onto my knees. "I'm so sorry. I'm trying. I'm really trying."
As I lay trembling against the brick wall, Julian's voice echoed in my head, loud and clear, mocking my misery.
'I wish I had never met you.'
'You mean nothing to me.'
How could a man who swore he loved me throw me away so easily? How could he believe I was a thief without even giving me a single second to explain? Was I really that easy to discard?
Was I so weak and foolish that I let myself believe a powerful billionaire could ever truly love a girl like me? The emotional weight of his rejection felt heavier than the freezing cold, crushing the breathing space right out of my lungs. I felt worthless. I felt completely destroyed.
Suddenly, a sharp crunching sound cut through the quiet night.
I froze, holding my breath.
Across the street, a dark black SUV with heavily tinted windows glided to a slow stop right in front of the bus station.
The doors clicked open, and three tall men dressed in heavy black tactical jackets stepped out. They weren't police officers. They moved with quiet, deadly speed, their hands resting near the holsters hidden beneath their coats.
They were mercenaries. The Sterling family's private security team had tracked me down.
"Search the platform," a harsh voice commanded from the street. "The boss wants her brought back in pieces if necessary. Make sure the child doesn't survive."
My heart stopped beating. My blood turned into pure ice. They weren't just hunting me, they knew about the baby.
Panic screamed through my veins. I couldn't think. I didn't cry. I dropped my small bag, kicked off my ruined shoes so my footsteps would be silent, and sprinted into the dark alley behind the bus station.
"There she is!" a voice shouted from behind. "Get her!"
Heavy boots slammed against the wet pavement, pounding right after me.
I ran faster than I ever had in my life.
The freezing ground cut into the soles of my bare feet, painting the ice with bright red blood, but I couldn't feel the pain.
The adrenaline coursing through me was a roaring fire. I turned a sharp corner, ducking behind a row of overflowing industrial dumpsters just as a beam of bright flashlight swept across the brick wall above my head.
I pressed my back flat against the freezing metal dumpster, squeezing my eyes shut and clamping both hands over my mouth to quiet my ragged breathing.
"Which way did she go?"
"She went down toward the main road! Move!"
The sound of heavy boots faded into the distance.
I slid down the side of the dumpster and collapsed onto the icy pavement, gasping for air. My feet were bleeding heavily, staining the slush around me. My knees were scraped raw. My hands were blue from the cold.
I sat there on the bloody pavement, shivering violently in the dark, and looked down at my wet, scraped hands.
The soft, naive girl who used to paint gentle pictures, wear pretty silk dresses, and smile foolishly at Julian Sterling was gone.
They had murdered her. They had thrown her into the rain, hunted her like an animal, and left her to die on a dirty street.
Tears stopped falling from my eyes. The painful ache in my chest didn't disappear, but it transformed into something hard, sharp, and unbreakable as iron.
I leaned down and pressed my palm against my lower stomach, feeling the tiny spark of life hidden safely inside me.
"They will never touch you," I whispered to the quiet dark, my voice cold, steady, and full of dangerous resolve. "I will build a life for us where no one can ever hurt us again."
I ripped a strip of cloth from the bottom of my dress, tightly wrapping my bleeding feet. I stood up on the frozen pavement, stepping over my own blood, and walked away into the night.
Elena Vale died on that pavement tonight. From this moment on, I would be someone else. Someone strong enough to survive. Someone powerful enough that no man, especially Julian, could ever crush me again.
