Jessy's POV
I groan in frustration as my phone rings out loud for the umpteenth time. I run a hand through my hair and slowly drop the small glass plate on the counter. I walk towards my handbag and picks my phone out of it.
"Madam Rena! Can I quickly answer this call? I think it might be urgent!" I yell at her while gazing at the caller ID. Dad knows I am usually working late on Fridays so why in the world is he calling my phone when it is just a few minutes to 8pm.
"Do not waste too much time Jessy. You know how customers flock here on a Friday night and Yvonne's number is unreachable!" Madam Rena yells from one of the tables on the far end. I release a heavy sigh and yell back "Yes, Madam Rena, less than a minute and i will be back to working!" I yell back. I walk outside of the restaurant and answer the call, I press the phone close to my ears and yell over the speaker before Dad can even say a word.
*Confusion and Concern*
"Dad, come on. You know I work late on Fridays. Why in the world are you calling me when it is not even eight pm yet!" I yell in frustration, surprisingly I do not hear my dad's voice but instead a feminine voice echoes over the phone. I scrunch my brows in confusion as the femine voice echoes in such an elequent tone.
"Hello, am I speaking with Miss Jessy?" She asks. My heart suddenly races fast and I think of the worse that could have happened to my dad because why in the world is a woman calling me with his phone number or could it be network issues? No, network issues have never been this bad before.
"Hello? Is anyone on the line?" The feminine voice repeats. I release a heavy sigh and gulp a lump down my throat before replying in a low tone "Yes, I am Miss Jessy. May I be of help to you or rather who are you and what are you doing with my dad's phone?" I ask.
"Calm down, Miss Jessy. I am Doctor Amber.
*The Breaking News*
Your father was rushed to the hospital an hour ago and I have been trying to contact you but it seems you have been busy with a lot of things." The feminine voice deadpans.
What? Dad has been rushed to the hospital? What for? Is this some kind of prank or something. I remove my phone away from my ears and gaze at the number just to confirm who is speaking on the line, it is actually dad's number.
"Hello, Miss Jessica. I need you to please respond if you are still on the line. I know this is hard for you to comprehend but your father is okay. Calm down wherever you are and listen attentively." Doctor Amber says emphasizing her words gently and slowly. Surprisingly her words are able to calm me down just a little, I place my hand on my chest and do some breathing exercises before saying "Yes Doctor? Where is the hospital at? Where can I see my father? Is he really doing okay? Where can I get to him?" I ask, my palms become sweaty and i suddenly feel overwhelmed by anxiety.
*The unknown Circumstances*
"I will answer all of your questions once you arrive at the hospital. I will text you the name and address of the hospital so please I just need you to promise me one thing." Doctor Amber says.
"Anything Doctor, anything in my power to keep my father alive." I cry out. Doctor Mabel clears her throat and says "I need you to be calm. Calm down and gently find your way to the hospital. Do not panic, do not run. Please just calm down and come to the hospital. Like I said earlier I will text you the address."
"Okay doctor, thank you so much." I hang up and in less than a minute, the doctor sends the address to me. It is quite far from the restaurant. The hospital has such a fancy name and I can not help but wonder who would have taken my dad to such hospital.
I do not care about that, I just hope he is fine. I dash into the restaurant and hastily pull off my apron and fling it on the floor. I hear Madam Rena call my name several times but I turn a deaf ear to it.
I dash out of the restaurant and hastily board a cab to the hospital, not after showing the cab man the address since I am not all that familiar with the place.
After an hour and a few minutes, I arrive at the hospital. I get off the cab in a haste and hand the cab man his money.
I scurry into the hospital and maneuver my way past some hospital workers who gaze at me with confused looks on their faces.
I successfully make my way to the receptionist desk. I nod my head as a quick form of greeting to her before asking "Where is my dad?"
"Calm down Miss. Who are you and who are you here to see?"
"Okay, I am Miss Jessy, I am here to see my dad. Doctor Amber called me and said my dad got admitted to this hospital." I say. The receptionist nods her head, she notices how uneasy I feel so she says to me "Please, let me make a quick call to Doctor Mabel. I am sure your dad is alright, she is such an excellent doctor."
I nod my head and smile at the receptionist for trying to make me feel better. The receptionist quickly places a call to Doctor Mabel and after that, she instructs me to the first room on the left on the third floor.
I dash towards the elevator and quickly press the buttons shut.
I arrive at the third floor and my heart begins to race fast as I freeze in front of the door.
Why do I feel so uneasy to push the door open?
I run a hand through my hair before gathering enough courage, I push the door open without bothering to knock. From the door, I can see my dad lying on the bed with his eyes shut close. I break down at how weak and tired he looks. I burst into tears and the female doctor standing in front of my dad with a notepad in her hand hastily scurries towards me and rubs my shoulder. The other nurses notice the athmosphere is a bit tense so they take it as their queue to leave.
"Your dad is going to be fine. I am Doctor Mabel, the doctor who called you over the phone earlier." Doctor Mabel says with a small smile.
"Thank you so much Doctor. Thank you for everything." I say. I feel so much grateful to her. At least she was the one who reached out to me about my dad and she even went as far as being so nice and calm to me. Such a good doctor.
*The Mysterious Benefactor*
"I should not be the one you should be thanking Jessy, you should thank the young man who brought your dad to the hospital." Doctor Mabel says. I scrunch my brows at her in confusion at the mention of a young man, what young man? Who could that be?
"Young man? A young man brought my dad here?" I ask. Doctor Mabel nods her head and replies "Yes, he said your dad was trying to get off a cab and in the process of that. He passed out right in front of the young man's car. I guess the young man did not want things to seem like a hit and run so he brought your dad to the hospital and covered every necessary bill before leaving." Doctor Mabel says. Wow, that young man sounds like an angel. Why was Dad in a cab though? Most importantly, why was he so far from home? I mean we do not stay around this location. This is more like a luxurious area where only the most wealthy people can afford so why in the world would Dad leave home and board a cab here?
"The young man's name is Andrea, you would most likely recognize him when you see him since he is a famous billionaire." Doctor Mabel says. A famous billionaire saved my dad? Wow, can things get any more shocking than this?
"He left his card behind just for me to call him and tell him the progress fo your dad so incase you want to express your gratitude to him, I can give you his number." Doctor Mabel says. I nod my head in agreement and mumble "I would like that, thank you so much Doctor."
* The Critical Diagnosis*
I walk away from her presence and towards my dad. He looks really weak and it seems like the only reason he is still breathing is because of the many drips plugged to him. Dad would hate this. He would hate himself if he wakes up and finds himself in the hospital. He always called himself the strongest man to ever exist, he hates looking weak.
"So Doctor, what is wrong with him? Is he going to be okay?" I ask. My voice comes out as a mere whisper but it is clear enough for Doctor Mabel to hear me and reply "Do you want to talk about this here or should we go to my office?" Doctor Mabel asks. I shake my head in disagreement. What is the point anyways? I plan to spend the night here with my dad so I guess she can say it here.
"I am okay. You can tell me here." I say. Doctor Mabel nods her head. She clears her throat and starts "Jessy, your dad's kidneys are failing."
What? Dad's kidneys? Not just a kidney? But kidneys? My goodness, how did this happen? I cover my mouth with my hand to hold back to loud sob that tries to break out of my lips. I do not want to cry, at least not in front of dad because what if he wakes up and meets crying? Dad would break down too. We only have each other, we lost mum years ago and ever since my sister moved to Spain, she just cut ties with us. She said we were like a burden to her and she wanted her own life and a new family.
Dad just has me and I only have him. The extended family do not seem to care that much about us. I need Dad to stay alive for me, I need him to be strong for me.
*Medical Expenses*
"Jessy, this is not the end of the world. I hope you know that right?" Doctor Mabel asks probably noticing the sad look on my face. I nod my head and hastily wipe tears off my eyes. I comport myself and listen to the rest of what she has to say.
"What is going to happen to my dad then? Doctor please, I know we do not know each other from anywhere but I plead with you to please save his life. The receptionist said you are a great doctor so all my hope is in you, please save my dad doctor." I plead with tears rushing down my eyes.
Doctor Mabel nods her head, she sighs and says "I can Jessy and I will. There is nothing to worry about. You just need to hear me out so you know what next step to take. We need to be fast about things so your dad can recover on time and be back on his feet." Doctor Mabel says.
I nod my head and gesture her to go on. "Your dad will be needing to perform a surgery. Like I said earlier, he developed a kidney disease and will need to perform a kidney transplant in order to get new kidneys that work efficiently." Doctor Mabel says.
"We will be needing ten million dollars to perform the surgery."
Ten million dollars? After Doctor Mabel told me everything, the requirements including the ten million dollars. She said she had to leave to attend to other patients but before leaving. She said this to me "Jessy, I know ten million dollars is probably like a lot to people like you but you need to find it quick because that is the only way to save your father." Doctor Mabel said that before leaving the hospital room with just I and my dad. After she said that and left, I cried a river.
I cried profusely because Doctor Mabel was not wrong when she said ten million dollars is a lot to people like me. Of course it is, Ten million dollars is a huge deal. Where in the world would I be able to afford such huge amount of money? Even if I work on the restaurant for ten years, my salary would never still equate to ten million dollars. I barely have anything in my savings. What do I do? I tried calling my sister, Sandra who is currently in Spain. She did not pick my call even after calling her like a hundred times. She probably deleted my number.
I have no one else, even if the extended family choose to help, they are not that rich enough to raise up to ten million dollars.
*Lost in thoughts*
I come from a very poor background with a struggling father. I could not graduate fully out of college because there was no money to fund me. Now, this huge bill comes up when dad and I can barely make ends meet. A small knock on the door startles me, I sluggishly walk towards the door and opens it wide to see my best friend, Lillian standing close to the door with a nurse behind her.
Immediately Lillian sets her eyes on my dad. She dashes towards me and pulls me into a tight hug. I cry into Lillian's arms and watch the nurse walk out of the room.
"He is going to be okay Jessy. Calm down." Lillian whispers softly into my ears while carefully caressing my back. I release a heavy sigh and nod my head slowly. Everything is truly going to be okay. I just need to calm down and relax.
Lillian breaks free from our hug and gestures me to sit on the small couch in the room. She stares at me with a sad smile playing on her lips. I called Lillian even at such a late hour and I am glad she was able to come. I felt so lonely and tired that I could not think straight, I needed company.
"So how is he?" Lillian asks. I sigh and shrug in response. "I do not know. He has not opened his eyes ever since I got here. The doctor said I do not need to worry about that though." I say.
"Okay so did he like have an accident or something?" Lillian asks. I could not tell Lillian on the phone that my dad's kidneys were failing. When I tried to, I broke down into tears and that was what made Lillian come here faster.
"His kidneys are failing Lillian, I do not know what to do in all sincerity. His Kidneys are failing and the doctors said we need ten million dollars to save his life." I say in a shaky tone. It was pointless crying again, I already cried like five times in just the space of a few hours. Crying would not wake dad up, nor settle the bill nor make time rewind.
"Ten million dollars? That is such a huge amount of money! What for Jessy?" Lillian yells with her eyes wide open.
"He needs a transplant." I reply. Lillian gasps and then sighs heavily. She runs a hand through her hair in frustration before saying "I swear that is a lot girl, have you tried any form of negotiation with the doctor? Anything to at least cut down the amount? Does she know that you can barely make ends meet not to talk of providing such a huge amount as ten million dollars?" Lillian asks. I sigh and shake my head.
"No, the doctor will not take any negotiations Lillian. I need to find a way to gather the money." I say.
"I think the hospital is also too expensive. Like way too expensive because why in the world are they asking you to pay such a huge amount of money as that? Why did your dad ever even get admitted here in the first place? What were you thinking Jessy?" Lillian snaps at me.
* Getting to know Andrea *
"Lillian calm down. I was not the one who admitted my dad here in the first place. I never even knew that he was admitted in the hospital until the doctor called and told me everything." I snap back at her.
"Oh, your dad got helped by a random stranger? What kind of random stranger admits your dad into such an expensive hospital though?" Lillian asks.
"Well, first off. I would not call him a random stranger because Doctor Mabel said his name is Andrea and that he is a rich billionaire who also covered all of my dad's bills, asides the kidney transplant fee though. He probably did not even know about that and even if he did. Why would he help?" I ask.
"It is not like he did this to my dad in the first place. As a matter of fact, he was kind enough to admit my dad in a hospital." I say.
"Andrea huh, are you thinking what I am thinking?" Lillian asks wriggling her brows at me. I get that she is trying hard to brighten up my mood but I am not in the mood for jokes right now. All I need is a way to save my dad.
"Come on Jessy. Do not give me that face. You need to call Andrea, reach out to him and beg him for money. If he is such a billionaire and a kind hearted person then no biggies." Lillian deadpans.
Call a stranger to beg for money?
