Sebastian Hale is a man who gets what he wants-until his father, Gregory Hale, threatens to destroy everything he's built unless he agrees to a marriage of convenience. Trapped in his father's ruthless game, Sebastian's only option is to marry Ivy Collins, a fiery journalist with secrets of her own. For Ivy, the marriage is a means to an end. Marrying Sebastian gives her access to the Hale family empire-and the chance to expose their darkest secrets. But what begins as a cold business arrangement soon ignites into a fiery passion neither of them can resist. As the lines between love and betrayal blur, Ivy discovers the truth about Sebastian's family, including a devastating secret that could destroy them both. With Gregory pulling the strings, Ivy and Sebastian must decide whether to fight for each other-or lose everything in the process.

Chapter 1 1

The low hum of conversations echoed through the polished glass walls of Hale Enterprises' boardroom, the atmosphere suffocatingly thick with tension. Ivy Collins sat stiffly in a leather chair at the far end of the long, gleaming table, her hands clenched around the strap of her bag. She hated the way this room reeked of power, money, and control-three things she detested most about the Hale family. But here she was, right in the belly of the beast.

Opposite her, Sebastian Hale leaned casually against the edge of the table, arms crossed over his broad chest. His charcoal-gray suit fit him like it was molded onto his body, exuding an air of effortless authority. His icy blue eyes, so sharp they could cut glass, remained trained on Ivy with a mixture of curiosity and disdain.

"You've been quiet for five minutes," Sebastian finally said, his deep, smooth voice breaking the silence. "That's a record for a journalist, isn't it?"

Ivy's spine straightened as his words sliced through her resolve. She wasn't about to let him intimidate her, not when she had come prepared for a battle. "I'm just wondering if you're actually going to say something of substance, or if I'm wasting my time listening to the most overrated man in San Francisco."

A muscle twitched in Sebastian's jaw, but he quickly masked it with a slow, deliberate smirk. "Overrated? That's bold coming from someone who works for a third-rate online gossip column."

Ivy leaned forward, her green eyes blazing with defiance. "It's not gossip if it's the truth, Mr. Hale. I deal in facts, and your family seems to have a lot of skeletons in their closet. Care to comment?"

Sebastian's smirk faded, replaced by a steely expression that could freeze over a heatwave. "You think you've cornered me, don't you? That you've stumbled on some grand scandal that will bring me down?" He straightened, towering over her as he walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. "Let me save you the trouble-whatever you think you've found, it won't work."

Ivy stood, her movements deliberate and controlled, though her heart was pounding in her chest. She was here for a purpose, and she wasn't going to let him rattle her. "You're awfully confident for someone who's had three lawsuits filed against his company in the past year. Not to mention the whispers about your father's dealings."

Sebastian turned to face her, his expression now unreadable. "Let me guess. You think my father is the devil, and I'm his heir-apparent? That I'm complicit in every decision he's ever made?"

"You said it, not me," Ivy replied coolly, though her pulse quickened at the mention of Gregory Hale.

Sebastian's gaze darkened as he crossed the room in a few long strides, stopping just inches from her. He towered over her, his presence both infuriating and magnetic. "Let me make one thing clear," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "I'm not my father. And whatever agenda you think you have, you're playing a very dangerous game."

Ivy refused to back down, though her breath hitched at the intensity in his eyes. "And let me make one thing clear," she countered. "I don't scare easily. If there's something you or your father are hiding, I'll find it. That's a promise."

The air between them crackled with tension, their gazes locked in an unspoken challenge. For a moment, it felt as if the rest of the room had disappeared, leaving only the two of them in this battle of wills.

Before either could speak again, the door swung open, and Gregory Hale strode in, his presence as commanding as the man standing before her. His salt-and-pepper hair was perfectly styled, and his tailored suit screamed wealth and influence.

"Ah, Ivy Collins," Gregory said, his voice smooth and calculated as he approached. "The tenacious little journalist causing such a stir. Welcome."

Ivy turned to face him, masking the unease that prickled along her skin. "Mr. Hale. It's an honor to meet the man who built such an... interesting empire."

Gregory's smile didn't reach his eyes. "I've heard a lot about you. Smart, resourceful, a bit of a troublemaker." He glanced at Sebastian. "I see my son hasn't scared you off yet."

"Not for lack of trying," Ivy replied, folding her arms.

Gregory chuckled, but the sound was hollow. "Well, Ms. Collins, since you seem so interested in the Hale family, perhaps it's time we make you part of it."

Ivy blinked, her mind racing. "Excuse me?"

Sebastian stiffened, his jaw tightening as he turned to his father. "What the hell are you talking about?"

Gregory's gaze flicked between the two of them, a sinister gleam in his eyes. "It's quite simple. A marriage. You and Ivy. It solves a lot of problems-for all of us."

The room fell into stunned silence.

"Absolutely not," Sebastian said, his voice laced with fury.

"I'm not marrying anyone," Ivy snapped, her voice rising. "Especially not him."

Gregory's smile widened, his expression one of pure calculation. "Oh, but you will. Both of you. Unless, of course, you'd prefer the alternative."

Sebastian's eyes narrowed. "What alternative?"

Gregory stepped closer, his voice dropping to a chilling whisper. "I expose every secret you've worked so hard to bury, Sebastian. And as for you, Ms. Collins... I make sure your career is over before it even begins."

Ivy's stomach churned as she exchanged a look with Sebastian, who looked as furious as she felt.

"This is blackmail," Ivy said, her voice trembling with rage.

Gregory shrugged. "Call it what you like. But the two of you are more useful to me together than apart. So, what's it going to be?"

The silence that followed was deafening, the weight of Gregory's ultimatum pressing down on both of them.

Ivy's hands curled into fists as she glared at Sebastian. "You don't get to make this decision for me," she said, her voice shaking.

Sebastian met her gaze, his own filled with frustration and something else she couldn't quite place. "Believe me, I don't want this any more than you do."

But as Gregory's cold smile lingered in the background, they both knew they had no choice.

Chapter 2 2

Ivy could feel her heart pounding in her chest, her mind racing through the implications of what Gregory Hale was proposing. No, demanding. Her entire life, she had fought for her independence, clawing her way out of small-town obscurity to build a name for herself as an investigative journalist. And now, in a single moment, it felt like the walls were closing in on her.

She turned her glare back to Gregory, who watched her with the smug satisfaction of a man who knew he had already won. "You're insane if you think I'm going to agree to this," she said, her voice low and full of venom.

Gregory didn't flinch. Instead, he spread his hands in a mock gesture of innocence. "Insane? No, Ms. Collins. I'm a pragmatist. You see, my son has a problem that needs solving, and so do you. This arrangement benefits both of you. Sebastian gets to keep his empire intact, and you, well... you get to keep your precious career. Seems like a fair trade, don't you think?"

Sebastian let out a sharp breath, stepping forward to interject. "Enough, Father. You don't get to dictate my life. Not anymore."

Gregory turned to his son, his expression hardening. "Oh, don't be so dramatic, Sebastian. This is about survival-yours and mine. Or do you think the board will sit quietly once I reveal the cracks in Hale Enterprises' foundation? The lawsuits, the scandals... do you really want them sniffing around your dirty laundry?"

Sebastian's jaw tightened, and Ivy could see the conflict playing out behind his cold blue eyes. For a moment, she almost felt sorry for him. Almost.

"And what about me?" Ivy demanded, crossing her arms over her chest. "What exactly do I gain from this farce, other than a lifetime of regret?"

Gregory smiled, and it made her skin crawl. "Oh, my dear, you gain access. Access to the Hale family. The inner circle. Isn't that what you've been chasing all this time? The truth about us?"

Her stomach twisted. He wasn't wrong, but hearing him say it out loud made her feel exposed, as if he could see every secret she tried to hide. "You think you're clever," she said, her voice trembling with controlled anger. "But I don't need your permission to uncover the truth. I can do it without marrying your son."

"Perhaps," Gregory conceded, tilting his head slightly. "But it will take time. Time you don't have. Your editor is already breathing down your neck about this story, isn't he? And let's not forget your family-your mother's medical bills, your sister's tuition. All things that could be... inconvenient, if someone were to make them worse."

Ivy's breath caught in her throat. She felt like the ground had been pulled out from under her. How does he know about my family?

Sebastian's voice cut through her spiraling thoughts. "Enough, Father. Leave her family out of this."

Gregory turned to Sebastian with a sly grin. "Oh, so protective already? How charming. But this isn't about her family, Sebastian. It's about leverage. And right now, I hold all of it."

Sebastian ran a hand through his dark hair, visibly struggling to keep his temper in check. When he spoke, his voice was low and measured, but there was an edge of steel beneath it. "You think you've won, but forcing us into this won't end well. For any of us."

Gregory chuckled, clearly unimpressed by the threat. "Oh, Sebastian, you underestimate me. This isn't about winning or losing. It's about control. And if you want to keep what's yours, you'll do as I say."

The room fell silent again, the weight of Gregory's ultimatum pressing down on them like a vice. Ivy glanced at Sebastian, hating the fact that she might actually need him to navigate this mess.

Finally, Sebastian turned to her, his expression unreadable. "You're not seriously considering this, are you?"

She let out a bitter laugh. "Do I look like I'm considering it? But your father seems to think he can strong-arm us both into submission."

Sebastian's eyes darkened, and for the first time, she saw a flicker of something human behind his icy facade. Regret, maybe? Or frustration? Either way, it didn't make her feel any better.

"I won't let him destroy your life," Sebastian said quietly, his voice so low she almost didn't hear him.

She raised an eyebrow. "Oh, so now you're my knight in shining armor? That's rich, coming from the man who just called my career third-rate."

He exhaled sharply, as if trying to keep his patience. "I said what I said. But that doesn't mean you deserve this."

"And what about you?" she shot back. "You're just going to roll over and let him control you?"

Sebastian's gaze hardened. "I've been fighting him my entire life. You think I don't know what he's capable of?"

Before Ivy could respond, Gregory clapped his hands together, drawing their attention back to him. "Well, this has been entertaining, but I'm afraid time is running out. I suggest you both make your decision quickly. The clock is ticking."

He turned on his heel and walked toward the door, pausing only to add, "Oh, and one more thing-if either of you breathes a word of this to anyone, the consequences will be... unpleasant."

With that, he left the room, leaving Ivy and Sebastian standing in stunned silence.

Finally, Ivy broke the silence. "Well, that was... something."

Sebastian let out a humorless laugh. "That's one way to put it."

She looked at him, trying to gauge whether he was as trapped as she felt. "What do we do now?"

He met her gaze, his eyes colder than ever. "We survive. Together, if we have to."

The words hung between them, heavy with unspoken implications. And for the first time, Ivy realized just how dangerous this game had become.

Chapter 3 3

Ivy stared at Sebastian, her pulse thundering in her ears. The idea of being tethered to a man like him was unthinkable. He was everything she despised-arrogant, entitled, a walking embodiment of the power dynamics she had spent her entire career exposing. And yet, standing here, facing the twisted ultimatum Gregory Hale had laid before them, she couldn't deny the gravity of their predicament.

"What exactly does 'together' mean?" she asked, her voice laced with skepticism.

Sebastian sighed and ran a hand down his face. "It means we play along-for now. My father doesn't make idle threats. If we don't give him what he wants, he'll ruin us both."

Ivy bristled at the implication. "So your grand solution is to just... what? Let him pull the strings while we dance like puppets?"

His eyes narrowed. "Do you have a better idea, Ms. Collins? Because I'm all ears."

The condescension in his tone made her blood boil. She stepped closer, pointing a finger at his chest. "Don't you dare act like this is just my problem. I wouldn't be in this mess if your father wasn't a manipulative control freak."

"And I wouldn't be in this mess if you hadn't decided to dig into my family's business," he shot back, his voice rising.

Their words hung in the air, charged with anger and frustration. For a moment, Ivy thought Sebastian might storm out, but instead, he pinched the bridge of his nose and exhaled slowly.

"This isn't going to work if we're at each other's throats," he said finally, his voice calmer. "Whether we like it or not, we're in this together now. Fighting won't help."

Ivy crossed her arms, still fuming but unable to argue with his logic. "Fine. But let's get one thing straight-I'm not some pawn for you or your father to use. If we're doing this, I have conditions."

Sebastian arched an eyebrow, his lips twitching in what might have been amusement. "Conditions? Let's hear them."

"For starters," she said, lifting her chin, "this marriage will be strictly business. No romantic entanglements, no 'accidental' feelings. Just a partnership, nothing more."

He smirked, and the sight of it made her want to slap him. "Trust me, Ivy. Falling for you is the last thing on my mind."

"Good," she snapped. "Because I'd rather gouge my eyes out than fall for someone like you."

"Glad we're on the same page," he said dryly.

"And another thing," she continued. "I keep my independence. I'll agree to the marriage for appearances, but I'm not giving up my career or my freedom. Got it?"

Sebastian tilted his head, considering her demands. "Fair enough. But if you're keeping your independence, I'm keeping mine. You don't meddle in my business, and I won't meddle in yours."

"Deal," she said quickly.

"Anything else?" he asked, his tone bordering on impatient.

"Yes." She stepped closer, her green eyes boring into his. "I don't trust you, Sebastian. Not even a little. So if you try to screw me over, I'll make sure you regret it."

His smirk returned, but this time there was a glint of respect in his eyes. "Noted. But let me give you some advice, Ivy-if you're going to threaten me, you'd better be ready to follow through."

"Oh, don't worry," she said, her voice dripping with venom. "I am."

The tension between them was palpable, a silent battle of wills neither of them was willing to lose. Finally, Sebastian extended a hand, his expression unreadable.

"Looks like we have a deal," he said.

Ivy hesitated for a moment before reluctantly taking his hand. His grip was firm, his skin warm against hers, and for a fleeting second, the contact sent a shiver up her spine. She quickly pulled her hand away, reminding herself that this wasn't a partnership born of trust or mutual respect. It was a necessary evil.

Sebastian glanced at his watch, his businesslike demeanor snapping back into place. "We'll need to announce this quickly. My father will expect us to act fast."

She frowned. "Announce? You mean... publicly?"

"Of course," he said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "An engagement like this isn't exactly subtle, Ivy. The media will catch wind of it sooner or later. Better to control the narrative before they start spinning their own stories."

Her stomach twisted at the thought of their names splashed across headlines, her personal life becoming tabloid fodder. "Fine. But I want a say in how this is handled. I'm not just going to be some accessory in your PR machine."

"Agreed," he said. "I'll have my team draft a statement, and you can review it before we release anything."

Ivy nodded, though the idea of being part of his world-even temporarily-left a bitter taste in her mouth. She grabbed her bag and headed for the door, but before she could leave, Sebastian's voice stopped her.

"One more thing, Ivy."

She turned, raising an eyebrow. "What now?"

His expression softened slightly, though the intensity in his eyes remained. "Whatever happens, don't trust my father. Ever."

She stared at him, caught off guard by the sincerity in his tone. For a moment, she saw a flicker of vulnerability in him, a crack in the armor he wore so well.

"I don't trust anyone in your family," she said finally. "Especially you."

Sebastian's lips curved into a faint smile, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Good. Keep it that way."

Without another word, she turned and walked out, her heart pounding as she stepped into the elevator. The doors slid shut, sealing her off from Sebastian and the twisted game she had just been pulled into.

As the elevator descended, she couldn't help but wonder what she had just signed up for-and whether she'd make it out unscathed.
