The rays of sun permeated through the window, shining directly to Leila's face which made her groan in annoyance and pulled the duvet over her head muttering incoherent words. Using her hands, she searched blindly for her phone which she found minutes later under her covers.
When she succeeded in opening her eyes, she checked the time and it was some minutes to eleven, making her automatically late for her first class. But when she tried to stand up, she fell back again due to a severe headache and she tried to give relief by massaging it with her hands. When she thought it was much better she felt nauseous and she immediately ran to the bathroom to vomit everything she drank yesterday, managing not to fall.
Coming back to the room a bit better than she was before, she noticed her clothes scattered around the strange room.
"Where the fuck am I?" She asked, as she made attempts to gather her things staggering a little.
The moment she picked up her underwear, it hit her that she was naked.
"Oh my god, what have I done?" She asked again, as she failed to recall the events of the previous day.
She shouldn't have listened to her friends when they asked her to live a little. Running her hand through her braided hair, she tried to recollect anything that could be of use to her present predicament but she couldn't come up with anything reasonable. She became frustrated and angry with herself for being a fool.
When she realized nothing was working, she began to cry silently. The moment she used the back of her hand to clean her tears, she felt something scratch against her skin and when she saw it, she couldn't believe her eyes
A FREAKING WEDDING RING.
Leila knew her life was over, she didn't need a soothsayer for her to know that. She doesn't have any explanation for everything going on right now and she didn't like it one bit.
Pacing around the room, Leila noticed the paper that was placed on the drawer beside the bed and when she picked it up, it read:
"I had the best night, thanks to my darling wife. Rest well and take a shower and breakfast will come at eleven so as not to disturb your beauty sleep...see you soon. See you later.
Your husband
J
"Are you kidding me?" She cried.
Leila was at a loss as to what to do, so just like the note said she actually took a shower and when she was done, she sat back on the bed not knowing the next step.
First, she wakes up in a strange place and naked for that matter, then she finds out she's married to someone she doesn't even know.
"Did we have sex?" She thought.
The doorbell rang, making Leila jump back in fear about who was at the door. Tiptoeing to the door, she looked for anything around her that can cause damage in case of danger.
"Who are you?" She asked, holding her high heels more firm and ready for action.
"Room service." The voice answered.
"Was it eleven already?" She asked herself again without getting a response.
"I didn't order anything." She said.
"A call came from here to bring breakfast for eleven." The person answered.
"Okay, come in then." She told the person, as she dropped the heels in her hand and opened the door.
The man pushed a food cart into the room and at the sight of everything there, Leila started salivating and even her stomach growled making her realize how hungry she was.
"Sorry." She smiled embarrassingly at the man.
"It's okay, we were told you'd be very hungry." He said before realizing he'd said too much.
"Can you tell me who said so?" She asked, hoping he would give her an answer.
"I'm sorry miss, I have to go now." He said, rushing out in a hurry.
Deciding not to think much again, she settled for the food and tried to take in the glorious sight before her.
On the cart, there was a variety of food she could choose from but she took the coffee first and it tasted just how she likes it: a white chocolate mocha with enough steamed milk.
It was obvious the person knew her so well, possibly her friends playing pranks on her.
"Why didn't she think of it sooner." She thought and smiled.
She started eating the bacon and eggs alongside her coffee. There were other options, but that was what she felt like eating.
She was going to give her friends a call when she was done with her food, but she also wondered why they hadn't called yet, especially her boyfriend, Shawn. They were all going to be sorry when she laid hands on them later in the day.
Once she was done with the bacon, she became tempted to touch the pancakes as they all looked enticing.
"I'm really hungry." She said to no one.
By one o'clock, she was ready to leave everything in place making sure not to forget anything including the note.
The hangover had reduced greatly, so the brightness of the sun wasn't as bad as it was the first time she woke up. Leila noticed that no one else was outside the door when she came out which made her suspicious.
After so many turns and whatnot, she found her way out of the hotel which turned out to be the biggest hotel in the city: Quantum Hotels. Her friends must have saved a lot to be able to afford the penthouse where she stayed.
The cab she took dropped her in front of the place where she stays in school and using the money she found in her purse, she paid the driver. All she wanted right now was another bath and sleep. She'll deal with her friends later.
Luckily for her friends too, they were not in the room when she opened the door so it was just her. Changing her mind about bathing, the first thing she did was climbing the bed but sleep didn't come instead she kept thinking about everything that happened.
"The note said J, but none of her friends' names started with an J." She thought, bringing out the note to look at it.
"Maybe Naomi used her surname instead." She reasoned.
There were other assumptions, but she'd stick with that because it was way better than the others she had.
With the thoughts of who the person might be if her assumptions were wrong, she fell asleep but something kept telling her that it wasn't her friends.
Guilt
The silence in my office became uncomfortable when I told Levi, my best friend, what happened the previous night and he didn't say anything. Instead he kept looking at me as if I looked different from the last time he saw me.
I didn't know why I was feeling guilty- probably because the girl I'd slept with last night was a virgin or that I gave in to the pressure of getting married from my grandma and actually married the girl.
"What are you going to do now?" Levi asked, after minutes of silence and thinking hard.
"I have no idea. On one hand, I'm married but on the other, I don't know if I did the right thing." I responded.
"You messed everything up by leaving a note....I mean, you have one night stand all the time."
"I know, but she was different. When I saw her lying down the next morning she looked delicate."
"You do know that your grandmother would be mad if she hears about this?"
"I know, what do you advise I do?"
"The best thing there is- forget about her, and she'll move on. What she doesn't know won't hurt her right? I'm sure you used a condom?"
This time, I choked on the coffee my personal assistant, Dina, had given me a few minutes ago.
Using condoms before having sex had never been a problem for me but because of how everything went down the previous night I couldn't recall if I actually remembered to use one or not.
"I can't remember, I think I did because I remember putting a pack in my pocket."
"Let's hope so."
No one said anything, and I resisted the urge to groan out of frustration. Nobody asked me not to be careful and Levi was right that she doesn't know won't hurt her.
"You have a meeting by 2pm sir, would you like me to set up the conference room on this floor or the one below?" Dina asked.
Sometimes you would think she was here for a fashion show instead of her actual job with the way she dresses. Agreed, she was smart and beautiful but I had a policy not to get involved with my employees.
"Reschedule it." I replied, not thinking twice.
I wasn't in the right state of mind to attend any meeting and I think it'd be better for me to have it another day so as not to ruin things.
"Mr Jackson, I'd like to, but they are already here and this is the meeting with Mr Brown." She continued.
I knew exactly what she was talking about, I'd always wanted to acquire shares in his company and this was my chance.
"Set it up." I commanded.
I couldn't believe what was happening, but I also want everything to go as planned.
My business wasn't easy, seeing that my family for years now ran chains of hotels and were very successful but sometimes I liked to get involved in the stock market which is where Mr Brown comes in.
"I'll see you later." I told Levi, who nodded in acknowledgement.
"Everything is set Sir." Dina announced.
Dina led the way to the conference room where the meeting would be held.
As they walked, I couldn't help but notice how perfect Dina's butt looked in the tight pencil skirt, it was as though she was teasing him on purpose.
"Mr Jackson." Mr Brown, old enough to be my dad, greeted.
"Thank you for coming." I responded.
At 25, I had done well for myself, making a mark in the business world. I earned the respect shown towards me by my employees and business partners.
"Let's get down to business, shall we?" I asked, and I watched how Mr Brown and his personal assistant composed themselves and were ready to talk business.
Throughout the meeting, my attention was divided as I couldn't stop thinking about the girl from last night.... and how she fits perfectly into my arms as we slept. Normally, I leave immediately after the sex but with her I didn't.
I couldn't be happier when the meeting came to an end as I could finally think with a straight mind.
Shaking hands with Mr Brown and a promise to get back to him, I was done for the day.
"Direct only important calls to me and send the documents concerning the contract with Mr Brown."
Normally, I prefer to finish up everything I had to do in a day in my office so that whenever I was at home, it was just to rest.....I guess there is always an exception to the rule.
"Yes sir, anything else?"
"No."
As I left, the employees scrambled hurriedly when they saw me but I didn't pay attention to them as I walked to my awaiting car.
"Where to, sir?" Victor, my driver, who was also my bodyguard asked.
"Home." I replied, as I loosen my tie.
Victor collected the suitcase from me once we arrived at the house.
I also didn't pay attention to Martha, the cook, when she asked what I wanted for dinner. Instead, I went directly to my room.
Letting the shower pour freely unto my naked body, I came to a decision to find out more about the girl- Leila Andrew. I had to correct my mistakes before they came back to bite me.
Picking up my phone from the bed, I placed a call to one of my friends who worked as a detective.
"I need your help locating someone." I told him.
Realization.
I must have slept off while waiting for my friends because when I finally woke up, I could hear voices from the living room and no one except them of course, would make so much noise.
Yawning lightly, I climbed down from the bed to go meet them. I remembered that I was still mad at them for their crazy idea of a prank.
"Look who's finally awake." Naomi teased.
They must have been around for a while because they all looked relaxed and comfortable in their pajamas.
"We said live a little, not scare the life out of us." Alexandria, who we called Alex said.
"Shawn was going to send a search party if we hadn't come home in time to see you asleep in your room." Regina added.
They kept going on and on about wherever I was and they failed to notice that color was draining from my face.
If it wasn't a prank, does that mean the ring was real and I was really married or that I most likely had sex with a stranger.
"Oh my god!"
I exclaimed as I used my hands to hold my head for support while making my way to the couch to sit beside Riley.
"What's wrong?" Riley asked.
"So, you guys didn't prank me?" I asked them.
Their eyes were fixed on me as if I just made the biggest joke of the century.
"Why would we do that? Besides, we were drunk except Riley since she spent most of her time on a call." Alex said.
"Can you tell me what you guys remembered from last night?"
They all tried to put pieces of what they could all remember but all I got was that I danced with a stranger who was generous to pay for our drinks and after that they went to dance leaving me alone with the stranger because I was drunk.....who does that to a friend? Leaving your drunk friend with a stranger.
"We thought Shawn came to pick you, so we didn't bother. You know he didn't want you to go in the first place." Regina concluded.
"I should have listened to him." I murmured, more to myself.
"But on the bright side, you get to experience the other side of life. You'll have something to tell your kids instead of your boring everyday life." Naomi said.
I didn't bother answering her because there was no use. It was left to me to figure out what the hell is going on.
"Why did you think we pranked you in the first place?" Riley asked, still rubbing her hand on my back.
"I woke up at Quantum hotels, so I thought you guys wanted me to freak out a bit." I explained.
I chose to ignore the shocked look on their faces as I lay my head on Riley's lap.
"You mean you weren't with Shawn?" Regina asked.
"Didn't you say Shawn was ready to send a search party to look for me? So no, I wasn't with him." I snapped.
"Calm down, we are just confused about how you got there." Riley said gently.
Since I was closer to Riley than the rest of my friends, I listened to her and murmured an apology to Regina when she asked me to.
"Can you tell us what you remembered?" Alex asked.
Leaving out the fact that I woke up naked and the fact that I was practically married to a stranger.... probably the one they left me alone with, I told them everything else which wasn't a lot.
"I can't believe you got to spend a night there." Alex said when I finished talking.
Of course, after removing the most important part the story didn't sound bad. Instead it sounded like I had the best time of my life and was just a little confused about how I got there.
"Do you know the person who got the drinks for us?" I asked.
"Not really, but it doesn't matter since you're back now." Naomi said, and the others agreed with her.
"You should probably tell Shawn that you're awake already." Alex advised.
I nodded slowly while they went back to watching TV and talking at the same time, leaving me in the pool of my own thoughts.
"You had me worried all night, where were you?" Shawn asked.
"I shouldn't have called him now. I'm not ready to deal with this just yet but the mistake has been made already." I thought.
"I'm not even sure babe, I was really drunk last night and I'm sorry if I made you worry unnecessarily."
My relationship with Shawn was good so far and it made my parents happy since they wanted us to get married in the future so that their company would become one with that of Shawn's parents.
There are times I doubt the real reason I was actually in a relationship with him..... sure he's attractive and I liked him but at the same time I didn't want to disappoint my parents.
"It's okay my love, I'll come check on you when I'm done with work." He said.
"Okay. Bye."
"Bye, I love you."
"I love you too." I whispered but he'd already ended the call.
One thing I hated was hiding things from my friends but right now, I couldn't bring myself to tell them the truth about what really went on last night. I didn't know how they'll take the news. Would they judge me or sympathize with me?
Thinking deep now, I realized I actually lost my virginity to him which explains why the bed was bare except for the blanket that was wrapped around me when I woke up.
My parents would be so disappointed if they found out about it. Though I'm sure they wouldn't mind if it was with Shawn but I've always told him I wasn't ready to go all the way with him.
"My life is over." I groaned.
"Now that we're alone, can you tell me what's really going on?" Riley asked.
Her hand was crossed across her chest as she stood quietly by the door. I didn't even realize she was there.
"Nothing."
"I'm not stupid, I know you're hiding something. I didn't want to ask you in front of the others."
I couldn't hide it from her no matter how much I tried, so after making sure the door was locked, I explained what really happened and I showed her the note I'd found in the room.
"This is serious, Lei. But first, hope you guys used protection?" She asked.
"I really don't know."
How would I know, when I barely even remember having sex in the first place.
"This is bad, you should take a plan b drug but I don't have any and the girls would get suspicious if you ask them."
"Are you saying I could get pregnant?"
"I'm not exactly sure, just to be safe let's go buy the morning after pill in the pharmacy."
I got dressed as fast as I could, I couldn't get pregnant now and worse for a stranger. But another surprise awaited me in the living room.
"Babe, I couldn't help it, I'll finish work later. Come, let's go out."
"Shit." I thought, as I quietly followed Shawn to his car.
