Chapter 1 THE LITTLE GIRL

"Tap, tap, tap."

"Huh, huh, huh, I think I can do it! I'll be safe for a while as long as they don't discover I escaped!"

A young girl, about five or six years old, murmured to herself as she hurried through the forest, her bleeding feet treading on dry leaves, stones, and other unidentified objects.

Despite the bleeding, the young girl showed no symptoms of discomfort, only worry and dread. It took her a long time to get down the mountain while running through the forest. And, without staying on the main road, the little girl took a certain path with certainty, and a smile could be seen on her meatless face.

'Will she accept me if she sees me like this?'

'I hope she doesn't chastise me or send me back there!'

She prayed softly with her hands clasped as she made her uncertain journey. She came to a halt in the bushes not far from the road when she heard some familiar sounds. Her interest piqued; she hurriedly lay flat on the ground to avoid being seen.

"Huhh, I hope they go quickly!" she grumbled to herself as she stroked her slender arm.

"Vroom, vroom, vroom"

A large car she didn't recognize drove by rapidly, and she saw it perfectly clearly. She didn't get up right away, preferring to remain on the ground to ensure that no one else was approaching. She rose from the ground once she no longer heard any noises of cars approaching.

"At this rate, I'll be naked!" she complained as she examined her soiled self.

The thin garments she was wearing were severely ripped, and some sections of them were unclean and had blood on them. A lot of thorn trees had hacked her while running through the forest, but it was all worth it. All of her sufferings will be worth it if she gets to see that person.

The tiny girl continued her journey. Despite her hunger and exhaustion, she was determined to reach her target. She had only been there once before, but she recalled the route well. She wouldn't have risked her life to come out like this if the demons back home weren't growing too nasty. She didn't trust anyone else besides that individual.

The world was full of vicious people, and she didn't want to fall into the hands of others. The little girl walked for over an hour and was soon nearing her destination.

However, as she got nearer to the destination, she got goosebumps that made her shudder with fear. Apart from that individual, the one thing she trusted the most was her instinct.

When something like this happens, it always spells trouble, and this has saved her numerous times in the past. She took a careful look around and moved carefully toward that person's location.

This location was somewhat isolated, and her destination was well hidden in another forest. She grew up in the mountains and met this amazing lady who lived some distance away from her home but also in the woods.

Her home, though, was far better than the small girl's, and she desired a better life.

That's why she escaped from the mountains to find the lady who offered her extra attention whenever they met. However, the little girl could sense that something was wrong and that if she wasn't careful, something bad would happen to her.

She lowered herself to the ground and carefully approached the cabin dwelling, following the instinct that had always helped and rescued her from harm since she was a child.

"Paaaaaaaaaaaa paaaaaa."

"Damn you, lady! Who does she think she is? Instead of providing the needed response, she tried to remain mysterious till the end!"

"Haven't you already dealt with her? Let's burn this place and drive to that place. We need to get rid of the danger before it comes back to haunt the Madam!"

The small girl shivered in terror as she stared at the two ferocious-looking men who appeared to be nasty individuals who had just left that person's residence.

'What became of her?'

'Is she still alive?'

'I need to leave here!'

She wasn't a moron. Despite her youth, she had seen and heard much too much for her to stay around in a dangerous place like this for too long. If she did, this place would become her final resting place, and she didn't want to meet her creator anytime soon.

'I haven't yet dealt a blow to those folks. I'm not going to die here!'

'I apologize, Godmother. These people are far too powerful for me, and I am a coward; I cannot save you!'

The little girl realized that attempting to be a hero at this time would only get her killed, and she wasn't about to sacrifice herself for something like that. And, without alarming those ferocious men who were busy pouring gasoline all over the cabin, she crept back the way she came.

And as soon as she was a safe distance away, she started running, and her destination was home.

She had no idea how far she had run. She had lost count of the number of times she had fallen to the ground, scraped her knees, and been injured. She only had one thought, and that was to flee for her life and return home before her parents discovered she had fled. They will undoubtedly punish her severely this time, but what difference will it make?

Her Godmother was burned to death by those evil men. She didn't know the specifics, but the smoke was already in the sky when she left the forest. How could she be alive at this time?

"Creak creak."

"Hoot hoot."

She couldn't care less about the small animals hooting and making a racket in the forest. She had been in this jungle for years and had become more of a resident, not fearing anything. However, what she had witnessed today made her realize how naïve she was, and she was terrified.

It took her less time to get back to her house, which was located in a valley between two mountains.

And when she approached where her house was, she noticed smoke before getting to the house, which she saw as a terrible omen. And something that made her tremble with fear as it reminded her of what she had seen earlier.

'They've come back! I'm doomed!' she thought nervously as she thought of her parents.

However, as she slowly made her way back home, she froze with fear when she spotted two familiar faces from a distance that she will never forget in this life for the rest of her life.

"Just a bunch of useless people! How can they possibly lose her? We need to find her and get rid of her!"

Hearing this, the small girl had only one thought; 'I need to disappear, right now!' and she did.

Chapter 2 16 YEARS LATER

"Ha ha ha!"

"You are so funny!"

"I believe you're just making fun of others. How can you all act this way?"

"OK, okay, today is a fantastic day. What are you guys going to do with this long weekend?"

"I'm going to my hometown this afternoon. It's been far too long since I've seen my parents!"

"My boyfriend is taking me out to have some fun. I'm not going home!"

"I have a part-time job this weekend, so no fun and no adjustment work!"

"Don't you brag a lot? Is this your way of saying you'll be crunching figures and making money?"

"This is why I love being an accountant!"

"You're acting shamelessly as if we're not like you!"

"All right, all right. Let's go, we've got work to do here!"

Around ten happy employees were chit-chatting just outside the office where they worked. The office workers, who ranged in complexion tone from dark to light, were laughing as they gathered for the final time before heading out for the long weekend.

"Give me a lift!"

"And how about you, Avita? Should I also give you a ride? I believe we're heading in the same direction?" A young man flirtatiously inquired of a young woman clothed in the company's uniform and wearing eyeglasses.

"You don't have to bother," Avita said firmly, shaking her head at her coworker who was continually trying this ploy on a daily basis, "I'll be taking a kombi. I'm not going there today."

The young man was a little dissatisfied, and he showed it without hiding anything.

When another female coworker noticed the familiar situation, she snarled and mocked, "umphh, just forget about her. If she wants to ride in a kombi, let her. Don't let this poor person dirty your car!"

The other females couldn't help but stifle their laughter when they heard this. It wasn't the first time Avita had been made fun of. It couldn't be helped. Avita was the only one here earning the lowest wage while still working as an Assistant. But that wasn't the only reason why these people would try to knock her down.

Jealousy and envy are inextricably linked, and some people couldn't stop eating sour lemons. Unfortunately for them, insulting Avita was like hitting soft persimmon; it was entirely ineffective because the other never seemed to notice. Despite the fact that they are bullies, it irritates the majority of them.

Avita, sensing that her coworkers would not let her off the hook if she stayed any longer, just smiled at her intermediate superior and said, "See you next week. I have some errands to run."

Everyone watched as this 1.65m tall, olive-skinned girl with those sparkling brown eyes that were always concealed behind those round-shaped glasses left with a swing bag packed with God knows what.

"Damn! She is always doing this every day and it pisses me off!" Jane, the woman who had earlier mocked Avita, complained as soon as Avita was out of sight.

"She is unusual. I'm curious why the boss keeps her!"

"She is very good at her job!"

"What's the point of being good at her job if she's constantly bringing us down?"

The young man who had previously been rejected still didn't seem well, but he suddenly began to smile slyly and remarked to his colleagues, who were often fawning over him because of his better background, "Don't worry about this. I'm going to teach her a lesson. She might as well kiss her career goodbye if she doesn't crawl between my crotch!"

What could these coworkers possibly say? It wasn't their concern what happens to Avita. In this world, everyone battles for his or her own survival, while the powerful prey on the weak.

"Ha ha, with how poor she is, I'm sure she'll be begging for mercy!"

As if they weren't already talking about messing with someone who needs to survive in this terrible world where costs are rising exponentially every day, making it harder for low-wage individuals to subsist. Companies were closing, and it wasn't easy for everyone. And these people simply arranged their coworker's demise as if it were nothing.

Avita, on the other hand, paid no attention to these people. She had a lot on her plate, and she wasn't about to bolster anyone's ego by sacrificing her values. She goes to work in order to earn a living and enhance her future. She wasn't going to kiss anyone's shoes, especially someone like her who gets paid by the same person who pays her. Avita also didn't care for that male coworker.

He was excessively flirty and believed that every woman should like him and expose her legs to him. She wasn't that kind of person. Despite her lack of wealth, she was a loyal person, and her partner was far superior to that peacock!

'Umphh!' she exclaimed inwardly as she waited for the kombi at the bus stop.

"....when you need someone who can love you while he's gone, baby, you've got my number.............."

Avita, who was waiting for the kombi, heard the familiar ringing tone and wondered who was contacting her. Nonetheless, she took her phone from her swing bag and examined the cracked phone screen, frowning when she saw the caller's I.D.

'Should I respond or just ignore it?' She was in a pickle, to be honest.

She was relieved when the call was disconnected while she was thinking about what to do.

'If I respond, that person will genuinely enrage me to death!' Avita disliked difficulty, and this caller was someone she didn't want to talk to right now.

Fortunately, the bothersome caller did not call again, and Avita was able to enter the kombi when it arrived. Avita was not wealthy, as she was the lowest earning worker at her workplace apart from the cleaners, earning an income of 2,000 Dryni or OWD 2,000.

The government of Oshua, the country in which she lives, announced and codified a minimum wage of OWD 1,000, with domestic employees being the lowest paid.

Life wasn't simple for anyone, but Avita wasn't complaining. If she complains while getting paid and without bothering to pay PAYE because her wage band was not taxed at all, won't this be completely unjust to others who were suffering with nothing to do?

Chapter 3 OSHUA

Avita lives in Oshua, one of the countries that make up the wonderful continent of Afreeka. Oshua is located in southern Afreeka and utilizes the Dryni as its currency.

Oshua is well-known for its agricultural products and is one of the countries on which other countries and nations rely to purchase staple crops such as maize and wheat. Oshua is also mineral-rich, and the service industry is expanding rapidly.

At the same time, the economy was suffering as a result of some international difficulties, conflicts, and other occurrences that could not be expected or averted at all. This caused several companies to close, as well as numerous mining operations to close, forcing many people to lose their jobs.

Even the country's service providers were suffering, with individuals being laid off virtually every day. This is why, despite not enjoying her job, Avita was not going to jeopardize her career by waking up jobless the next day. Despite the fact that her compensation was so low that she couldn't even pay her rent of OWD 1,500 per month, let alone food, transportation, and other expenses, she persisted and completed her job.

Fortunately for her, she didn't have to pay the rent alone because she was now living with her boyfriend, who was in charge of the rent while she was in charge of the food and utilities. Avita didn't own a car because it was too pricey for her to purchase and maintain. She'd been working as an Accountant assistant for about two years now and there was no sign of promotion.

Luckily for her, she was able to find work in her present workplace, which was somewhat toxic at the moment, as soon as she graduated. She had been with the company for three months without being paid. It wasn't just her; there were three others with her. It was difficult for her because she had to spend a lot of money every day while not being compensated.

However, in order to gain experience, Avita did not give up but worked tirelessly, and this was the best decision she ever made at the time. Her other colleagues were not hired, and she felt no sympathy for them. After all, if they were chosen, she would forfeit her shot at working for the corporation.

After being hired, Avita received a salary of OWD 1,300, which was later increased throughout the course of her employment until they reached the current wage of OWD 2,000. During the last meeting, the boss promised to raise their salaries, which she was looking forward to because every extra cent in her pocket helps a lot. Avita could only take public transportation because she didn't own a car, which was far less expensive than driving.

The kombis fare was OWD 7, and taxis were OWD 8. Special taxis, on the other hand, were different and dependent on where one was going, but the fee for these taxis started at OWD 40 and goes upwards. However, when compared to the costs of driving, Avita didn't mind being mocked for not driving at all. A liter of gasoline cost OWD 16, and a car would need more than that for only one journey in a day. On a day like this, how much money would a driver spend?

Actually, things used to be a lot better. Even the fuel was approximately OWD 9, but a year ago, due to a war in the Middle East between Country G and D, economic troubles arose, resulting in the ever-increasing prices that have continued to this day. All of these issues, however, would not affect Avita. She was merely a helpless individual with no ability to change anything. Instead of worrying about political issues, she opted to take each day as it came.

Avita took a kombi from Sparrow Commerce Park, which was a park for businesses and warehouses as well as the location of Avita's accounting firm. Avita first took a kombi to the CBD, where she will pick up her second kombi to take her home. Although it was painful to spend nearly OWD 30 per day on transportation alone, what else could be done?

Avita exited the kombi after paying her kombi fare and sighed as she looked at the crowded rank.

'There are a lot of people here! This alone proves that the long weekend has arrived! I can't wait to start making money!'

Avita was a highly positive person who did not give up easily or allow anything to get her down and demotivate her from attaining her goals. Her reason for staying in the CBD for longer this time was to purchase some shares. Although she was an Accountant Assistant, she did not rely solely on that position and also worked part-time.

It will be a lie to believe that she can manage and care for herself alone on her wage. So doing something extra will be extremely beneficial. She didn't want to rely too heavily on her lover. He still has a lot of people to look after. Avita went to the local shopping center, where she found a wholesaler of the product she intended to purchase.

Her phone started ringing again as she walked there, observing the enthusiastic people buying.

"..... if you need someone who can love you while he's gone, baby, you've got my number..."

Avita took out her phone again and saw the same caller I.D., wondering what this troublemaker wanted again.

Avita answered the phone this time; if she continued to ignore this person, something horrible would happen. "What do you want?"

[Damn! Is this how you talk to your friends?]

"Who is your pal? Just tell me what you need from me; I'm really busy!" Avita was not in the mood to entertain her alleged buddy.

For a moment, there was stillness on the other side before the other said, [Where are you right now? I must see you!]

Avita paused for a moment before responding, "I am in the CBD."

[Oh, that's just right. Just send me your location and I'll be there in a flash!]

Avita didn't see how thrilled the other person was and simply texted her location when the call ended. Avita resumed her shopping trip without delay.

A rich young lady was smiling in another part of Wakothanie, the vice-capital of Oshua, the same city where Avita lives.

"What? Did she finally answer your call?" her buddy asked, noticing how happy this lady was.

"Yes, she replied, so I'll be departing now."

"Oh, you're already leaving? We haven't even begun eating yet!"

"Lunch can wait, but Avi cannot. It's not every day that she lets me see her!"

"Why are you so obsessed with her?"

"You will never understand!" sobbed the wealthy lady.

How can mortals understand her?
