Chapter 1 The Shattering Of Trust

Chapter One

The Shattering Of Trust

"Good morning my love" I rushed to my Bradley's side with a smile as soon as I saw that he had woken up and voluntary wrapped my hands around his neck.

Today was a very special day for us, it was our second anniversary as husband and wife and I was so excited for the surprise party I would be throwing us tonight.

I knew Bradley has been so busy with work and must have forgotten so I took it upon myself to make sure today was amazing for the both of us.

"Get off of me" I thought I heard him say but I did not believe it

"What?" I asked again for clarity, leaning closer to his muscular body and enjoying the warmth of it.

"Get off!" Bradley shouted and threw me off of him with such a force that I almost fell out of the bed

I blinked twice unable to understand what had just happened. What had I done wrong for my husband to treat me in such a way on our second anniversary as a married couple?

I stared at him for a while, still contemplating what must be going through his mind or if this man was not my husband but an impostor.

He had a nicely cut black hair and beautiful blue eyes that made him look almost feminine. His hard jawline and well chiseled face however always showed the handsome man in him.

So far, there was nothing strange about his appearance. The man on the bed with me was Bradley, a popular business tycoon in New York and my husband. So why was he behaving like this?

It took a while for me to notice that he was staring at me too, his gaze was cold and stern. I cleared my throat but before I could say anything, my husband got off the bed.

I watched as Bradley left our bedroom without a single word and headed for the showers without any explanation or a glance back at me.

I did not know when my heart started beating with so much fear and pain and...

"Claudia" I whispered as I suddenly remembered my best friend. She was always supportive of my marriage and I knew she would help me right now.

The phone began to ring and my heart beat faster every second that she did not answer the call.

"Hello" Claudia's voice rang out from the other end and I was a little relieved.

"Hello Claudia" I began fast, struggling to keep my trembling tone in check

"Rebecca, what's wrong?" Claudia asked, concern in her voice "You sound worried"

"It's Brad" my voice broke as I recalled how he had thrown me out of his arms just a couple of minutes ago. My body shook at the memory.

"Yes what about him?" Claudia asked casually.

"He is acting strange" I squealed as I fought back against the tears that wear pressing at my eyelids.

"How do you mean?" Claudia asked, this time with more interest than ever before.

"Today is our wedding anniversary and when I went to hug him good morning he... he..." my voice broke off again unable to say the words.

"What did he do?" Claudia's voice grew more enthusiastic. I knew the suspense was killing her so I had to tell her everything

"He pushed me away from him" I finally blurted as the tears began to pour down my cheeks. It felt more painful, saying it out loud.

I expected Claudia to scream, to gasp, to get angry or sympathize with me but she fell completely silent. I could hear nothing from the other end".

"Claudia " I called out to my best friend in a low voice "I think there is another woman. Brad is having an affair"

Saying that hurt even more than admitting the first and I had to put my hand on my heart to steady myself but still yet, my friend said nothing.

"Hello, are you there?" I asked hoping to hear her voice. I was so distraught, all I wanted wanted was for somebody to calm me down and tell me it was going to be okay.

I could have been overreacting and I wanted Claudia to tell me that, to soothe my worries, to make me smile but again there was no word from my friend.

"Claudia" I cried out in frustration. Now was not the time for there to be terrible reception. Of all the times in the world, something like that should not happen now.

The next thing I knew was that the line was disconnected, leaving me to my fears and doubts.

I stared at the large master bedroom that had become mine and Brad's sleeping quarters for the past two years. I loved this place, I loved him and I knew he loved me too so what had gone wrong?

I was so lost in thought that I had not noticed when my husband had walked right back to our room and was busy getting dressed. When I finally caught sight of him, I was shocked.

Bradley was going about his normal business as if today was not our second wedding anniversary or he had not pushed me just a couple of minutes ago.

He had already put on his office shirt and trousers and was about to wear his suit when I took hold of his arm again.

"Let go of me" he spat with venom in his voice.

What's going on?" I asked as I took a cautious step away from him

"Isn't it obvious?" he asked, his eyes cold and void of any love "I want a divorce!"

"Divor-" before I could complete my statement, Brad had retrieved a set of documents from his briefcase and shoved them in my hands

"Sign it now!" he growled at me and I quickly opened the documents to see what was inside.

"These are divorce papers" I announced as I read the contents of what I had in my hands.

When I saw his own signature already on them, my breathing stopped.

Chapter 2 The Ultimate Deceit

Chapter Two

The Ultimate Deceit

"This is not possible!" I shrieked as the papers fell from my trembling hands One by one, there were scattered on the floor but I could not focus on that.

My attention was on Bradley my husband, the man whom I had spent the better part of two years and last night with. There had to be a very big explanation for this.

"Look at what you've done" was the only response I got as my husband groaned in irritation before bending to pick up the papers that fell to the ground.

For the past two years I had been living in the billionaire mansion as Bradley's wife, I had never seen my husband pick up anything from the ground, not even his own personal belongings. It was either I or any of the maids that did that for him.

All of this was getting harder to believe as I continued watching as Bradley arranged our divorce papers in his hands and even checking to see if anyone was rumpled.

"Bradley I don't...." words failed me again as my husband continued to ignore me, caring more about a pile of papers in his hands than his own wife who was getting more and more disconcerted.

"You are lucky there is nothing wrong with them" Bradley rose to look at me again, this time I only saw anger in his eyes "How could you be so careless?"

"What?" I asked in outrage. My head was spinning and I could tell from the pain in my scalp that I had developed a headache. What was happening to me? Could I be dreaming?

"Forget it" Bradley dismissed me with a raise of his hand and then he stretched the papers towards me again "Now sign!"

"Is this a prank?" I asked frowning. Bradley was not one to joke but I could not have guessed that he had such a terrible sense of humor "It is not funny Bradley"

"Do I look like I'm joking?" he said and I was forced to look at his handsome face once more. Nothing in his expression gave anything away about this being a joke but I still could not believe it.

"So this is real?" I asked as I pointed to the divorce papers in his hands, still refusing tocollect it from him.

"Yes" he said simply " Now sign!" he extended the files to me again and I could tell by the look on his face that he was growing impatient by the second.

"Don't you think I deserve an explanation first?" I asked, composing myself a little but not taking the papers from my husband.

Before he could answer that, his phone rang and both of us were momentarily distracted from our present conversation. Bradley hurried to pick it up.

"Hello" he said into his phone and his eyes quickly moved away from me in a hurry. I could tell that he really no longer had any interest in seeing my face ever again.

"Bradley!" the feminine voice on the other end sounded excited and it was as if my world came crashing down on me

I was right all along. Bradley was acting strange because of another woman. He wanted me out of his life so he could bring her in. That was the reason for the divorce papers.

My suspicions were confirmed when I saw the smile on Bradley's face. My husband had indeed been having an affair and he no longer saw the need to hide it from me.

The woman continued to say something that my mind was too busy to pay attention to. I just stood there in awe of what I was witnessing.

"She is about to sign it" my husband said softly, as if pacifying the woman that was destroying our marriage.

"Do you...." was all I could hear before my emotions took hold again and I was plunged into so much pain and heartache aside from the headache that was still making its presence felt

"Yes" he continued, giving no sign to the amount of pain that I was in as he continued to have a calm conversation with his lover about me in my presence.

I did not know what I had done to deserve this. Why was Bradley doing this to me after all the time we have spent together during these past two years of our marriage?

"Okay" he said, so gently. It was obvious that he truly had feelings for whoever was on the other end but when did all this happen? I had been with him for two years and never noticed anything like that.

My mind continued to run in circles as I became more and more uncomfortable. The questions only kept on coming, adding to my headache. Why now? Why on such a day as our anniversary?

"See you soon then baby" he said and the line to the other end got disconnected. I stole a glance at him and saw that he was smiling but when he saw me staring, he frowned.

"Who was that?" I gathered enough courage to ask, knowing fully well that his answer may shatter me but I needed to know the lady who had stolen my man.

"You would know soon enough" Bradley said and for the umpteenth time, gave me the divorce papers "Just sign"

Before I could take it from his hand or say any other thing, there was a knock on the door.

"Who is it?" Bradley barked

"Master Bradley,It's me Susan" our maid answered.

"What is it?" Bradley said with the same harsh tone.

"Miss Claudia is here for the madam sir" the maid answered

"Let her in!" I squealed immediately. I was ao glad that my friend had come to see me. Maybe she could talk some sense into Bradley

"Okay miss Rebecca" Susan said then left to fetch Claudia.

"Has she signed yet?" Claudia said as soon as she stepped inside the house immediately turning to my husband and not to me.

"What?" I was so shocked I almost fainted when I saw as Bradley rushed to take my best friend in his arms and pressed his lips to hers.

The other woman was my best

Chapter 3 The Patriarch's Decree

Chapter Three

The Patriarch's Decree

"Baby" Claudia moaned the next second Bradley's lips had parted with hers. Her back was against me but I could tell her eyes were twinkling from the pleasure of being with my boyfriend.

"Brad..." I put both hands in my mouth to stop myself from saying something that I may regret should this turn out to be a ruse or some kind of prank.

I still believed somewhere in my heart that the two people I loved and trusted with all of me were not having an affair.

It was too absurd.

"My son" a voice echoed from the corridors leading to our bedroom and it caused all of us to shudder. It was the voice of Bradley's father and the residing patriarch of the McMichael household, Lord Vince.

Lord Vince as the maids and workers had taken to calling him was a strict ruler who tolerated little faults and always wanted the name of the McMichael upheld at all costs.

"Bradley, what are we going to do?" Claudia asked in worry as it appeared that the Lord was. As far as I know, Claudia never got along with the old patriarch either.

That was because Vince McMichael did not take a liking to just anyone. He always chose to mingle with only those of his prestigious status with only one exception, me.

"Have you gone to work without saying good morning to your father?" his voice rang out again and I shivered at how close he was to us.

I have always felt uneasy around Bradley's father since the very first day I laid eyes on him. There was always a way he looked at me which made me feel odd.

Bradley and I had an arranged marriage and Bradley had told me never to tell a soul as he intended on doing the same so I was not sure his father knew.

So when the lord made advances on me, I was so chocked. I had threatened to tell his son and since then he had backed off. But what about now?

"Were you having a meeting without me?" Vince said as soon as he walked into our bedroom and surveyed the tense look in our eyes.

"No sir" Bradley answered, his calm getting slightly undone "We were just..."

"And what are those papers?" Vince eyed the divorce papers suspiciously "Are you trying to transfer the ownership of our house and company to your wife behind my back?"

"Of course not" Bradley shut out immediately, his features burning with the colour of embarrassment at his father's accusation. The old man could not have been farther from the truth.

"What is it then?" Vince asked his hands stretching to receive the papers from Bradley "Can I have a look at it if you don't mind?"

"Divorce papers" Bradley said, handing his father without any hesitation at all.

I did not know what was going on but I was sure that Bradley would never involve his father in any prank. It was dawning on me that everything I just witnessed was real.

The Lord surveyed the letter with keen interest. I was so desperate, I began to hope that the old man would come to my aid even though I knew that was highly unlikely.

"So you have finally decided to put an end to this contract sham" Vince blurted, making me realize that he was also aware of the truth of my marriage to Bradley.

"You knew?" I asked the old man and he just spared a glance at me in response. No wonder he dared to make a move on me. He had always known that Bradley and I were having a fake marriage.

Different emotions ran into my mind at that moment from shame and betrayal to irritation and anger. Bradley had told everyone in his family while he instructed me to not tell a soul.

"So why isn't her signature on it already?" Vince asked with absolutely no regard for me or even Claudia still standing beside Bradley.

"Not yet but..." Bradley was trying to say but was stopped by his father's raised hand.

"Susan" Lord Vince shouted with his usual loud and domineering tone. The sound of his voice echoing throughout the mansion.

"What are you doing? I don't need them to get involved" Bradley was trying to say but his father did not want to listen, choosing instead to wait for the running maid.

"Yes Lord Vince" she panted after running inside our room "You called for me"

"Fetch me Pedro and Reymond, tell them to drop everything they were doing and hurry here" Vince ordered, not even sparing a glance at the maid.

"Yes sir" the maid said, resuming her run out of the room, not wanting to stay another second in the same room with the patriarch

"Father, what do you plan on doing?" Bradley asked, worry beginning to show on his face. Was he worried about me?

"Not me" Vince said as he looked between me and his son "You are the one that will take care of this"

"How" Bradley said still looking very concerned as the footsteps approached us.

"By kicking her out of the house and sending her to whatever slum you brought her from" Vince said this just as we heard a knock on the door

"Sir, you called for us" Pedro said behind the door of our bedroom and my heart skipped at what the McMichael Billionaires would want our gardener to do to me.

"Tell them to get all her things out of the house" Vince said before turning to the door "I will be going down for my morning tea"

"Yay!" Claudia jumped up and down excitedly as soon as the Lord was out of the room. I had almost forgotten about her presence here.

"You want this signed?" I said suddenly, reaching for the divorce papers that Vince had left on the bed.

Anger taking complete hold on me in that single moment and I put my signature right next to Bradley's.
