It was a breezy Saturday morning; the sun was up, and rays of sunlight forced themselves through the window, casting a beautiful golden light on Laura, who was lying lazily on her bed curled up like a kitten.
Ding!
Her phone beeped. It was a message from her best friend, Anna.
Anna: Good morning, sunshine. I've got something for you.
Laura texted her back. "What do you want? I thought you were going to your aunt's wedding today."
Anna: Yeah, sure. I'm still going. Don't worry about me. There's this fantastic app that I came across. I'll send you the link. I think you'll like it. (Link).
She didn't speak of matchmaking, just as usual. It was surprising; Anna always liked to play matchmaker for her. It always excited her. Of course, Laura always refused to play along with her after breaking up with her first boyfriend two years ago. She had refused to date any other guy and even started keeping her distance from men.
Anna was afraid that she was developing voluntary celibacy and worried that Laura might not find a husband. She had set Laura up on dinner dates which always turned out bad.
Laura understood her worry, but she didn't care anyway. She wanted to be a celebrity; her career was what mattered to her, and she wasn't even the slightest bit interested in being in a relationship now.
She opened the link on her app store. "Oh, it seems like it's too early to judge that damn Anna." She stared at the app, looking amused. It was a dating app. "Find your soulmate," she sighed. "I should have known that Anna was up to no good."
She clicked the download button on her app store; she was bored anyway and wasn't going anywhere today. Besides, the app had a high rating, piquing her interest.
She waited patiently for the app to download before opening it. The first thing she thought when she opened it was that the developers were quite capable. Its interface and functionality were all top-notch.
She created an account and named herself "The lonely snow," then she used a picture of her dog, a Lhasa Apso. It looked very cute with a funny expression. She started scrolling through the app and came across a peculiar name, "The ugly monkey king."
"What a peculiar name," she thought. She decided to send him a friend request. He accepted immediately.
Ugly monkey king: Hi
Lonely snow: Hello
Ugly monkey king: I like your name; it's very unique.
"Wow, he is very straightforward," she thought before typing some words.
Lonely snow: Yours too; it's very unique.
His name was really unique and funny. She wondered if he was really ugly; how would he look in real life? She became thoughtful and started thinking of meeting him. It was just a small thought at first, but it started getting stronger the more they chatted.
The lonely monkey king doesn't seem to be well-skilled in picking up girls and makes stiff jokes. Laura found it funny. She replied in kind and especially made some jokes about his flirting.
The ugly monkey king: Will you go out on a date with me?
A date, she hesitated. Normally she would always politely reject whenever someone asked her out on a date. The few dates she had gone on were all orchestrated by Anna. But this time, she was really curious to meet this unfamiliar man.
Lonely snow: When?
Ugly monkey king: Tonight if you can.
Lonely snow: All right.
Ugly monkey king: Westview restaurant, 6:00 pm.
Lonely: Ok.
She went offline. 'Wow, I can't believe that I actually agreed to go on a blind date. The man won't be too ugly, right?'
She wasn't expecting her date to be handsome anyway. From the look of his name, maybe he wasn't that good-looking. It doesn't matter anyway; I was just going to have fun after all.
'Maybe I should go out for a morning walk,' she thought. It was a sunny morning, and she wasn't going to the entertainment industry today. She wore a jersey with shorts.
Her very sensitive dog, Nana, saw her and ran towards her. "Do you want to go out, little guy?" It barked and wiggled its tail as if saying yes. She took a leash and put it on him. "Come on, let's go and have a walk."
Today was the weekend, and many people could be seen in pairs with their partners. Laura and the little dog attracted lots of attention. Laura has a stunningly beautiful face, and her body was very curvaceous and well-rounded.
She carried herself with such a strong aura that even though most of the men were admiring her figure from a distance, they didn't dare confront her.
Laura didn't notice anything; even if she did, she was already used to it. Right now, her mind was occupied by something else.
She had been signed to Headway Entertainment Industry as a new artist. She wanted to be a musician but was offered a chance to be an actress for now.
At first, she was supposed to feature in the new movie, which was going to be a blockbuster, as a side character. She had gone to the auditorium and won the position as the female lead. Knowing that she couldn't be allowed to take on the new role as a newcomer, no matter how talented she was.
She was shocked when she heard that she was going to keep the role. It came as a huge surprise for her, so she went to see her manager. Her manager told her that someone had taken a liking to her and was backing her. It also happened that the person was the highest investor in the movie.
At first, she had been so grateful and was thinking of how to thank the investor. On Friday, her manager came and told her that the investor wants to meet her on Sunday in a hotel to tell her why he helped her.
It came as a surprise to her, and she was reminded of the rules of the entertainment industry. It was very likely that the investor wanted something from her.
Although she was aware of the rules of the entertainment industry, she wasn't enthusiastic about it and was even repulsed by the idea of sleeping with countless old and middle-aged men just to get a good role or obtain their favour.
She had been hoping that her talent would be valued, and they wouldn't try to force. Perhaps she was just thinking too much, and the investor was helping her with a clean conscience. But that was only a possibility. She decided not to dwell on the matter now.
In the evening, Laura was sitting in front of the mirror. She was wearing a red-colored sleeveless dress that fitted perfectly on her body. She admired her face a little before bringing out her makeup box to apply light makeup on her face.
When she was done, she looked at herself in the mirror and smiled lightly. She wasn't narcissistic, but it was really going to be hard for any man to resist her that easily.
She didn't have high expectations for her supposed date, but she had to look her best. Her phone rang, she looked at the screen and saw that it was Anna. "Oh shit! She hadn't told her that she was going on a date."
She picked up the call.
"Hey, Laura, I'm sorry for not coming over. I got worked up with some stuff. Anyway, how are you doing? Have you used the app?" Her voice appeared excited when she talked about the app.
"Yeah, it's cool. It's not that bad."
Anna was surprised. "Wow, you actually agreed it's not bad. That's nice. So tell me, are you having fun with the app? How is it?" She became enthusiastic.
"Actually, I forgot to tell you. I met a guy there; we are going on a date tonight," Laura said.
There was a pause on the other side of the phone. "You are joking, right?" She said, sounding shocked.
"Nope."
"How could you do this to me, you traitor? I can't believe you are going on a date without telling me." After throwing a tantrum for a while, she asked again. "How does he look? Is he handsome?"
"I don't know; I didn't see his picture, he used a monkey for his picture," Laura replied.
Anna felt like she was going crazy. "You didn't even see his picture yet you agreed to go out on a date with him. What if he isn't good looking?"
"Let me worry about it. I'm going now, don't disturb me, goodbye."
"Wait, don't cut the car..."
Beep! Beep!
The call was disconnected. She sighed in relief. Anna was talkative; if she didn't disconnect the call now, she would end up talking for hours and going late for the date.
She checked herself in the mirror once more before leaving with her small purse clad in her hand. She flagged down a cab on the road and hopped in.
Ten minutes later, the cab pulled up in front of Westview restaurant. It was a high-end hotel; it seems like her date has quite a good taste. She paid for the cab and walked to the restaurant. She noticed that some of the men were secretly looking at her and drooling. The women had unpleasant looks on their faces.
"What's great about a pretty face?" one of the girls said in jealousy. Laura ignored all this and walked inside the restaurant. She was met with the same situation outside.
"Mum look, that aunty is so beautiful." She turned and saw the owner of the voice. She was a very cute girl about eight years old. She flashed a smile at her, and the little girl started blushing.
Laura thought the girl was so cute. She went and sat on a chair by the table near the window. She brought out her phone.
**Lonely snow:** I had arrived. Sitting beside the window and wearing red. Where are you?
**The ugly monkey king:** I will be there soon enough, give me some minutes.
So he hadn't even arrived. She had even purposely come ten minutes later. She pouted. The waiter came over.
"What do you want, ma'am?"
She looked at her and flashed a smile. "I'm sorry; I'm not ordering now. I'm waiting for someone."
"Oh, you're on a date, I understand." He said and politely left. Ten minutes later, he hadn't arrived yet; she was getting impatient. He dared to make her wait. The waiter came over again. This time, she had no choice and ordered a glass of juice. The waiter served the juice, and she took a sip.
She decided that she would be leaving after she finished the juice. It was very embarrassing, but she only has herself to blame anyway.
Carson imagined how angry she must be now; he had been occupied by work and couldn't arrive early. He packed his car carefully in the parking lot beside the restaurant before walking inside. He still didn't know why he was doing this. He could easily get any girl he wants by just gesturing. Yet he had proposed to go out on a date with a stranger.
He felt it was quite funny. If this news was released to his friends' circle, they would gossip behind him for weeks. Of course, they wouldn't dare say anything in front of him, or else they would be tired of living.
He looked around the restaurant and remembered what she said. 'Sitting beside the window and wearing red,' his eyes landed on the only girl that fit the description. He paused.
The first thing he thought when he saw her was that she was unbelievably beautiful. She was sitting quietly and pressing her phone. Just this small action of hers looked like an art itself. Her beauty and body shape could put all those models to shame.
This caused him to frown. Someone like her could get any man she wants without even doing a thing. Why would she agree to go on a blind date with a stranger? The girl subconsciously turned, and their eyes met.
Laura was already tired from all the waiting and had decided to leave. If she were to meet that guy, she was going to give him a good telling off. She felt like someone was looking at her and looked towards the restaurant door. She was surprised to see a very stunningly handsome man standing there.
Their eyes met, and he didn't even try to look away. She frowned. Was he the one? She wondered. As if to confirm her curiosity, he walked towards where she was sitting.
"Are you the lonely snow?" He asked. His voice was quite cold.
She stared at him incredulously. "Don't tell me you are the ugly monkey king!" She exclaimed.
"Why can't I?" He said with a smile.
"Nothing, it's just that I was kinda..."
"You were thinking I wouldn't look that good." He helped her complete her sentence as he sat down on the chair opposite her. "Name is Carson." He introduced himself.
"I am Laura," she said with a blush. He had actually exposed her thoughts. Was she that easy to read?
"Nice name; you are beautiful." This could be the first time he was complimenting a girl for her beauty.
She blushed. "You're also handsome. Do you mind telling me why you named your profile The Ugly Monkey King?" She asked curiously.
"I don't know, maybe it's because I'm the direct opposite of the name."
"Pfft!"
She couldn't stifle a laugh. He sounds narcissistic, but she had a feeling that he wasn't. Maybe he just wanted to crack some jokes. The waiter came over, and they made their orders. The two of them started talking about different topics ranging from sports to the entertainment industry. It appeared he was quite familiar with the entertainment industry, and they had lots of topics to discuss in that area.
While talking, she didn't even notice when they finished all the food on the table. They ordered a good quantity of wonderful delicacies. But the embarrassing thing about it was that she was the one who ate most of the food. She drank a glass of wine to cover her embarrassment.
Just then, his phone rang. He picked the call angrily but after hearing what the other person said, he stood up in a hurry. "I am sorry, Miss Laura; there's an emergency right now I have to leave." He stood up and left hurriedly without even saying goodbye or exchanging numbers.
"What situation is this?" She couldn't comprehend. Was she just duped? So, the handsome boy was actually a pauper; he just freeloaded and made her pay for his bills. She got up and angrily paid the bill before leaving. She regretted coming to this date; she blamed herself for being played.
When she told Anna what happened, she laughed so hard. "I felt like going over there and giving him a good beating."
"How could such a hunk be a pauper that only feeds on women?" She exclaimed.
"You think handsome people are not allowed to be paupers?" Laura retorted. She hung up after that. She was already in a bad mood and didn't want to be angered further.
The evening of the next day, Laura was standing in the entrance of the Royal Hotel club room. She wasn't a fan of clubbing. She had once been almost raped in the past when she had gone clubbing with her friends. It made her have a great dislike for clubbing.
Today she had an appointment with the investor who had helped her. He was called Mr. Arnold, and it was going to be the first meeting they would have. She looked around the club and saw her manager, Mr. Joseph; he was waving at her. A man was sitting beside him. He was short and plump.
She walked to where they were sitting.
"Hello, Mr. Joseph," she greeted before turning to the plump man. "You must be Mr. Arnold." She said politely.
Mr. Arnold smiled. "You are right, dear; I am indeed Arnold."
"I heard what you did for me. I am really grateful to you. I don't know how to thank you, but I promise to repay your gratitude in the future." She said sincerely.
Arnold laughed. "You don't have to wait till the future before you can repay me. Actually, this is just the tip of an iceberg. I can do more for you if you agree to be my woman."
Laura knew that this was coming, but she wasn't prepared. Mr. Joseph excused himself, claiming that he had to make an important call.
Laura faced Mr. Arnold with a serious expression. "I am sorry, sir; I can't have any relationship with a married man."
He smiled and poured a glass of wine for her. "Here, let's drink first."
Carson had been feeling frustrated since yesterday. When he remembered he didn't pay the bill yesterday, he was so embarrassed. What would the girl think of him? She would probably think that she was being taken advantage of and dumped.
A rich billionaire like him, there was no way he could lack money. He even forgot to ask her for her number and had been trying to contact her through the app, but she hadn't logged in since yesterday.
She was the first woman that had managed to leave an impression on him yet he flopped. Just as he was thinking, he saw a scene that made him freeze. It was the same girl from yesterday. She was sitting with a plump middle-aged man.
But something didn't feel right. The way she was looking at the man, it looked like she was guarded against him. But for some reason, her face was blushing red. The man smiled triumphantly. The girl was losing consciousness; two men appeared and took her away. The plump man smiled and followed behind at a slow pace.
She had been drunk, he thought immediately, feeling a sense of crisis. He rushed forward and blocked them.
"Where do you think you are going with the girl? Leave the girl this instant." He ordered in a cold authoritative voice.
