Chapter 1 ONE!

CARLOTTA

"Miss Evans, your flight is ready."

I nodded and waved my manicured hands at her dismissively and ended that call I was on. The flight was scheduled for my departure and I boarded the plane. Only I and my personal assistant were in my cabinet and others who were my workers sat elsewhere in the jet since it was private.

"Brief me on our branch in New York." I demanded politely.

Sara adjusted her thick lens glasses and began reading off a piece of paper, since we'd taken off, I looked at the window to admire the fluffiness of the clouds and the amazing sunshine that tried to pierce through them. I halted up a finger, interrupting Sara.

"It's beautiful isn't it? The clouds." I whispered.

"Absolutely ma'am." She concurred.

My thoughts drifted back to the first time I had boarded a plane, how the clouds were a companion to me but instead they were dark and gloomy; a synonym of what my future was meant to be but I changed it. I exhaled softly and signaled for her to read on. I'd already gone through all the needed information on C&K Company and tonight was the official opening and unveiling of its CEO.

"Did you check out the guest list and ensure they'd RSVP'D?"

"Of course ma'am."

I leaned back and bit my lower lips, my heart was racing against the walls of my chest as the thought of returning back to the same city that held dreaded memories for me.

"Mommy, can I have some candy?"

I flinched as the little soft voice tore through the fabrics of my thoughts. I smiled instinctively and turned to face a five year old beautiful girl. She held out her hands and I carried her up, sat her down beside me.

"Klara, no more candies for you today, you had six already." I scolded.

She pouted, making her signature baby face to try and convince me otherwise or better, charm me and I laughed and handed her a chocolate bar. Sara was smitten by Klara's cuteness and tried to sneak her a candy past me but I caught them and we all chatted a little bit, like family would because I prioritize my family over business.

Half an hour later, we all fell asleep and was only woken by the air hostess's announcement that we were landing in five minutes. We braced ourselves for impact and in five minutes time, we landed. As a fleet of cars was already awaiting us to drive us to our destination, Klara was excited and wouldn't stop jumping around. She's had a fantasy for New York and it's been her dream ever since I told her about it three months ago.

"Where to ma'am? The company or your mansion?" Sara asked as we got into the car.

"My house." I replied dismissively.

She shut the door and relayed the message to the driver and they drove off.

We arrived at the mansion fifteen minutes later and though it screamed of luxury I owned better. Klara was more than energized and excited to check things out in there while I was focused on getting ready for the unveiling that night.

We spent some quality time together and though Sara was my Personal Assistant she was also my friend and loves to take care of Klara for me. We ate, took a nap to rest after the long journey and when it was time; I dressed up, put Klara in her nanny's charge and dressed up for the biggest event in New York city that night.

'Miss Gloria, can you look at the camera please?'

'When next will you be making a public appearance?'

'Who do you think is the CEO of this fast rising company?'

I could hear reporters drill the couple that walked the red carpet. My limousine pulled up and I alighted from the car, instantly getting their attention and they rushed at me like never before, luckily; my bodyguards shielded me from them and shoved them aside to allow me a passage.

'Who is she? This is a never seen face before, do you mind telling us who you are ma'am?'

'What do you think of today's event?'

'How are you related to C&K Company?'

'You're without a man, isn't that inappropriate?'

I halted and turned to face the reporter who asked the question, fear gripped her as I smirked at her.

"I don't need a man to shine darling, I've got sparkles of my own." I said, confidently and walked away, numerous questions trailing behind me.

I was ushered into the Vip section of the huge hall and there were not so many people there since only the necessary people were meant to be there. I could see the look of ridicule on one of their faces and I laughed, the man was a major shareholder in the company and was famous for looking down on people.

"You're dressed more glamorous than anyone else yet you're just a representative of some company, where are you from?" He asked, disdainfully.

I chuckled and stopped Sara from correcting him. I took her by the hands and walked out of the place, deciding to mingle with only the guests.

"You shouldn't be here." Sara whispered, getting scared.

"Relax, nobody knows me that well." I assured her.

She got us glasses of champagne and I inhaled the air around the place, it reeked of rich arrogant people who wouldn't bat an eyelid before stomping the poor and underprivileged underfoot. I once struggled to get into that clique but now? I own the clique.

I turned around to leave and suddenly bumped into someone.

"I'm so sorry, I didn't see-"

"You moron! How dare you ruin my dress! Do you know how much it costs? I had to pay a fortune for this. Are you blind?" A feminine voice cursed loudly.

Sara was infuriated about how she spoke to me but I held her back and wanted to give the rude woman a piece of my mind only to be shocked by who it was.

"What do we have here?" I remarked, snidely.

She looked up at me and gasped softly, I folded my hands and chuckled a bit softly while I boiled inwardly.

"You!" She hissed.

Sara looked from me to her.

"Hello sister." I greeted sarcastically.

"Carlotta? You? You're alive? But how, where-"

I watched in amusement how she mumbled words and was visibly shocked. I'd anticipated running into her by mistake or never but didn't know it would be on this day.

"How have you been?" I asked, nonchalantly.

She scoffed and eyed me like I was an eyesore.

"How did you get in here? Who let you in? Did you steal something or get married to some old man to-"

"Who do you think you are speaking to her in such a manner?" Sara chipped in.

I glared at Sara and she gulped in nervously, Floria scoffed loudly at her and went ahead to find more words to ridicule me, I could tell that Sara was amazed since she knew me not to let anyone ridicule me this way but I was patiently waiting for the best time to strike.

"Life hasn't been any easier on you, has it?" I uttered calmly.

Floria opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by someone.

"Floria darling, I've been searching for you all night, where have you-"

A deep baritone voice that vibrates through my stomach sounded, one I was so familiar with that it was stuck in my memory. His words trailed off as he sauntered up to us, his eyes widening in shock as he set them on me.

"Hello Kai." I greeted, somberly.

Chapter 2 TWO!

CARLOTTA

SIX YEARS EARLIER

"mhm, what's that? Drop the drapes, I want to sleep a little bit more!" I moaned softly as rays of light hit my eyes.

I turned over to the other side to bask in the sweetness that the sleep offered me and my hands roamed freely on the soft bed, searching for my phone. I hit my hand on a hard surface and the pain surged through me, causing the sleep to elude my eyes instantly. I yawned involuntarily and sat upright, the spot stung hurting badly.

My fluttering eyelids became stabilized as I sensed a change in my equilibrium. I jumped out of bed, startled at the strange environment I had met myself, it didn't look like my room or something I could recognize. A wave of headache hit me instantly, and the effects of the last night began to kick in violently, my skull threatening to shatter into pieces.

"Shit! Fuck!" I cursed loudly as my eyes fell upon a table clock. It was well into the morning and I was late for work, I picked what was left of my dress, hurriedly dressed up and sauntered out of the place.

I hailed a cab and on the way back home, I strained to remember what had happened but the headache blocked it out instead. I got home five minutes later to see my lovely step sister smirk at me maliciously.

"Good morning sleeping beauty, you look extraordinarily beautiful this morning." She taunted.

I shoved her aside and went to my room, locked myself up and ran into the bathroom to shower, as the water hugged my unclad body, I felt a sting in-between my legs and the events of the previous night came rushing back like a jolt of adrenaline.

"Shit!" I cursed softly.

I muttered more curses as I realized I went to the club with Floria and she gave me some sort of drink and then I staggered off somewhere and met this crazily attractive guy whom I said a lot of dirty words to. I hissed as I hit my head on the wall, jolting me out of my reverie. Ten minutes later, I headed to my workplace and stopped at a breakfast store to get some donuts and coffee.

Lucky for me; my supervisor wasn't in his office yet so I was safe and also was saved by a close shave while using the elevator and in a hurry as I almost spilled coffee on the most feared man in the entire universe; my boss and CEO of Kai Empire.

"I'm really sorry." I apologized weakly.

He scowled at me and didn't spare me a glance afterwards, his assistant motioned for me to scream which I happily did and was relieved when I got back to the sanctuary of my desk. The day went by like every other day with just a slight touch of a horribly banging headache and a touch of dizziness.

The greatest shock was when I was filing the documents for that day's report and suddenly matched two unlikely yet so interrelated discoveries together. The man from my memory whom I shamelessly threw myself at the previous day bore an uncanny semblance to CEO Kai. I gasped, the papers falling off my hands as I realized that the possibility that they were the same person was higher. His scent, though briefly perceived by me, also matches the man I ended up rolling under the sheets with.

I knew at that moment that I was in a hot pile of mess but decided to keep the freaking out for when I was safely in my room. When I got home; I was faced with yet another interestingly horrific scene. I was to get married to some mysterious man in place of Floria; my stepsister.

"Are you out of your mind? Why would I get married to some random stranger just for you to get enough funds to sponsor Floria's unrealistic dream to be a business owner!" I screamed at the top of my lungs at my father who was being illogical and unreasonable.

Pah!

I fell to the ground, tears rolled down my cheeks as my face burned hotly, Dad had slapped me hard across the face.

"You're marrying him and that's final you ungrateful sloth!" He hollered and then stormed away.

I held my face and watched him leave while Floria stood aside, watching it gleefully, Talia; my stepmom went after dad while I picked myself up and went into my room. I cried my eyes out all night and for the following weeks but nothing changed my fate. I was to marry the unknown, definitely old and foul rich man against my own will.

A month later, I walked down the aisle with my father holding my hands, few people in attendance and my family which includes Floria. The groom was already waiting at the altar and no one would guess the change in fate as I stood before the groom.

"Do you Kai Miller take Carlotta Danvers as your lawfully....."

I didn't hear what else the priest was saying or anyone else but was stupefied to see that the groom was no other person than Kai freaking Miller! I was over my head and shook! He said his vows, forcefully and I did as well. It was obvious to the blind that the union was not a holy one but who cares when I'm getting married to the hottest man known to live?

The wedding didn't take as long as I imagined it would be as he was very much in a hurry to finish things up and I honestly didn't mind. Two hours later; the reception and all was done and it was time to leave. Dad said his brief goodbye while Floria and her mother didn't bother saying as much as a word to me, hence I got into the car with my husband, ready to face whatever the confusing and unbelievable future was going to hold.

"Hi." I greeted shyly.

We were now in 'our room' an exquisite space bigger than the entirety of my house and anything else I've ever seen and well, I strangely got accustomed to the fact that I have been successfully sold to the wealthiest man alive? Alright I'll wrap my head around it much later since nothing really made any sort of sense to me.

I looked at him with pride in my eyes, he suddenly turned to face me, holding my hands in his and smiled wonderfully. At that moment my heart fluttered loudly, my stomach churned but it wasn't in a bad way, it tightened and my heart beat increased. Everything was just happening all at once and I couldn't just fathom what to do or how to act.

"You're my wife." He muttered.

I shook my head, feeling a bit shy.

"You're very beautiful." He whispered, which I found seductive.

He inches closer and I closed my eyes, awaiting his lips to commune with mine, a perfect synchrony, but if wishes were horses, beggars would definitely ride. But I was on a winged horse, riding and galloping on the softest of clouds, a little fire burned in me as I felt his breath on my face, the most perfect moment ever, there; I forgot everything, my name, my identity and my initial desires to be free.

His lips brushed past mine and I blushed, awaiting a taste of heaven.

"Welcome to hell, wife." He whispered into my ears.

My eyes flew open and I instinctively snatched my hands from his, staggering backwards; horror etched across my face.

Chapter 3 THREE!

KAI

"Is this dress pretty?"

I eyed the overly excited woman in front of me as she twirled and let out a disdainfully groan.

"I don't care what you wear but I do care if I'm late for this occasion so let's get going now, shall we?" I replied.

"But it does look good on me don't you agree? Just as that blue tux looks fabulous on you, everyone will swoon at the sight of you." She chirped.

"Don't try to sway yourself into my good books by complimenting my looks, you'll never get it right." I warned.

She nodded her head and interlinked her hand with me and we both marched forward.

"Kai! Kai!!"

I shook my head vigorously for a split second as I heard the snapping of fingers and a soft voice jolted me out of my reverie. I looked up to see a pair of glistening eyes staring at me confusedly, I smiled and reached out to pinch her cheeks which were soft to touch, the woman who made my heart flutter every damn time.

"I've been calling your name like a billion times, what are you thinking about?" She scolded.

I wrapped my arm around her waist and drew her closer, she chuckled as our noses touched and I kissed her fully on the lips.

"Stop it, we're in public!" She giggled.

"Well, they'll all know you belong to me, don't they?" I boasted.

She chuckled and freed herself from my grip.

"I'm just going over to speak to some friends, I don't want you anywhere around them, they won't be able to get their eyes or hands off you and you know what I think of that so go talk with some men or do some sort of business, I don't care, just don't speak to a woman." She instructed.

I laughed softly and nodded my head, she twirled around and walked away, I watched her leave and I was more than content that she was in my life. I got myself a glass of champagne and sipped gingerly from it.

Life was perfect except for the occasional thoughts that intruded my train of thoughts. I sighed as I remembered my reminiscing session earlier, some events refreshed my emotions and brought back the ones I've had with her and though it had been years, she still manages to seep into my subconsciousness.

Moments later, my eyes scanned around for the one woman that made my life worth living in the pool of women and guests in the huge hall. Apparently; the new CEO of the fast rising C&K Company that has been making one hell of a wave in the business world was going to be unveiled tonight and as their partner and business associate, I had to be here.

My eyes fell on my lover as she had her back turned at me and I could see her shoulders tensing as she spoke to another person whose face I couldn't see so I walked over to them, ready to defend my woman but was shocked and taken aback by the sight that greeted me.

"Hi Kai."

I could never forget that voice, the voice that haunted me barely half an hour ago but this time the owner was not the person I knew, not that I didn't recognize her but she was the upgrade of her.

"Carlotta?" I called out, shaken and confused.

"Nice to see you too Mr. Miller." She replied with a smile.

Her smile was as dazzling as her beautiful appearance, she was glowing! Her gown hugged her delicate body accentuating her womanly features and reeking of both wealth and affluence.

"Wh-what are you doing here?" I stuttered.

"What am I doing here? He asks what I'm doing here Sara, can you believe that?" She turned to a petite yet clean and pretty woman beside her and asked, they both laughed softly and I was still lost.

"You disappeared five years ago." I stated, clearing my throat and regaining my composure.

"You mean you threw me out and discarded me five years ago? Surprise! I'm back, thank you for asking." She retorted, sarcastically.

I chuckled softly and put a hand in my pocket while the other wrapped itself around Floria's waist as I could visibly see that she was infuriated.

"Can you believe this darling? Little innocent Carlotta here is now a mistress for old smelly men." Floria spat out, venomously.

I wanted to discourage her from engaging further but a voice sounded over the microphone calling for order and assemblage.

"I see you two are still together, good for you." Carlotta remarked, disdainfully.

"How did you-"

"I guess that's my cue now, ciao, it was nice meeting you, again." She interjected and walked away, with the lady trailing after her. She swayed her hips gracefully and carried herself with so much poise. Floria was as confused as I was but most importantly, I was curious to see what was going to happen.

"We're all gathered here to meet and reveal to the whole world the owner and force behind C&K Company; the fastest uprising company in the country and continent, ladies and gentlemen; put your hands together, brace yourselves and savor this historical event as I present to you and welcome to the stage, the CEO of this prestigious company whom you all have been dying to see for months, Miss Carlotta Klein!"

A thunderous applause resonated through the entire hall as Carlotta mounted the stage and took the microphone, everyone was clapping except for myself and Floria. I was shocked to the core and so was Floria, half the words and address Carlotta gave flew past my ears and I stared at her in disbelief.

"What!" Floria exclaimed.

I shook my head to be sure I wasn't hallucinating but when I stared at Carlotta once more and she winked at me, I realized it wasn't a joke. She was the CEO but the question of how, thumped hard against the walls that housed my brain and mind.

"This is impossible!" Floria whispered, staggering a few steps backwards.

I couldn't recover from the shock and just stared blankly at the stage. I didn't know for how long or what time had passed and only got back to my senses as someone touched me. I looked up to see Carlotta and she smirked at me.

"Hi Mr. Miller, I am Carlotta Klein, I believe as a business associate we're going to see more of each other henceforth, do not be in a hurry to leave, there's a special package for you." She uttered.

I could see the mischievous twinkle in her eye as she spoke and stretched her hands towards me. Floria grabbed my arm, still dazzled and urged me to leave.

"Let's go." She whispered.

I nodded and turned to leave but not without regretfully seeing the wicked grin plastered on Carlotta's face. As we hurried out of the place; Floria kept mumbling about how it couldn't be and the devious means Carlotta had used but deep down on the ride back home, I knew a force not to be reckoned with had been birthed.

It took me more than half an hour to calm Floria and listen to all her illogical reasons and attempt to explain Carlotta's sudden revelation and after she managed to go to sleep, I was left with my thoughts. A sudden fear crept into my heart, there was bad blood between us, I wondered what was to become of my ex-wife and I, a twist had unexpectedly occured.
