CHAPTER ONE
Driving with curious gazes at the scenes that passed by, a phone call breaks the silence.
"You disappeared on me. We had an appointment".
She replies unfazed "Work calls''.
Dr Amy sighed with a tone of concern, "Sophia, it is usual to be traumatized by what happened''; Death is a normal occurrence''.
Sophia with certainty in her voice, "I didn't know her, it's not a bother at all".
She was like me, nice, cold and empty with no one except a sad house plant which is better than what I have.
She died alone and peacefully.
Dr Amy feels remorseful, "Sophia, stay focused, no big moves or changes and free your mind''.
Sophia on the other end of the call feeling unusually calm about the whole burial crusade that has just been finalized.
Dr. Amy has no further comments, "Let's check in tomorrow''.
Sophia, "Yeah''.
Arriving at her agency, she walks in boldly leaving her audience in awe of her successful mission.
Sofia takes a breath and walks into the office, "It's been a while Chief''.
Without moving her gaze, she comments. "The agency has been dealing with three major issues this morning. Robbery and hostages at The YK Bank, Rising prison breakout at the National Prison Lockout and of course the Underworld dealings of drug exploitation and slave trade. And now I can't even get a good coffee''.
And yet, you lost control of the mission, the target dead, and then you had to eliminate four men. What a special day isn't' it'.
Sophia unfazed, "I like what you are doing with the office though''.
Chief with a curious grin fixed on her face, "Are you developing a sense of humour''.
Sophia waited patiently for another assigned job to take place, she needed something to get her mind busy.
Chief reserving all comments to give Sophia knowing she won't yield to any of them. "Alexander Royce, the young billionaire and mafia boss, has been a slippery one to catch, he deals with more drugs than the pharmaceutical world. I want him to face the law as soon as possible''.
Sofia's eyes fixed on the lines of the pages of the new case with more interest than normal. "Is he related to the drugs and cocaine that's now rampant in New York?''.
Chief's eyes, keened on the case subject cause it had been her lack of sleep for a while now. "Yes, and that's why I need you on this case as fast as possible, you will go undercover as an intern in his company and gain access to him, I want evidence to pin him down''.
Sofia without a hint of doubt replies, "Yes ma'am, as always dead with evidence. Bodies don't talk back''.
Chief, with a vein popping at the back of her neck due to her past frustrations. "Bring him alive and no screw-ups this time, follow protocols or I will assign you a permanent partner for this case''.
Sophia replies, "Sure Captain, Stay rested''.
Leaving the office with yet another troubled file on her hands, she will take this case as a breeze in a vacation that she needs.
With several thoughts pilling in her head, she tries to unravel the case of Alexander Royce, the young billionaire who yields power in different areas due to unrivalled personality and ruthless aura that seems to be unmatched by business tycoons and even the underworld associates.
Another sudden call brings her back to reality, "Yes, who's speaking?''.
"It's your Vet, you have to come down for your dog, it's a bit complicated actually''.
Sophia sighs, the only other thing she cared about in this life is her friend for life, who has now fallen ill due to lack of care.
She blames herself, she has been out for weeks on a mission without leaving her dog in safe care.
"I will be on my way''.
Pacing into the hospital, anxious to finally meet with her dog and its vet, she rushes up to meet the elevator and collides with an owner and his cat.
Finally, meeting up with the doctor in charge, "How is Roxy doing now?'' she asks patting the dog softly while checking its eyes.
"She is better right now, but she has to be taken care of properly, leaving her without any care can be dangerous to her well-being.
If there's no one, the hospital takes this type of service, till you are around to fend for her.''
Sophia stares at Roxy with a questioning look on her face as if she is asking the dog for a reply to what the doctor just said, "There will be no need for that, she will cope with me as always. We got each other."
The Vet had no other words, "Okay, that will be all for now, you can take her home".
Sophia drives back home, seated at her side her able ally, Roxy, tongue loose out in the air and ears flying in different directions without a thought of what will happen tomorrow.
Sophia takes a peek at her dog and turns back to the sightings outside her window, but her gaze suddenly falls back to the case file she had collected from the Chief.
The thoughts of her new mission as an intern and the target being Alexander, the ruthless tycoon unlocked a slight fear in her she wasn't used to for a long time.
With hopes that it was only a feeling, she drives back home.
CHAPTER TWO
The sun streams in light through the curtains, which brightens up the already darkened room with rough files littered everywhere from the coffee table to the small space arranged for menial jobs.
Sophia sleeps softly till she is woken by a call, her blue eyes open hesitantly without having enough rest and now being interrupted by this call, "Who is speaking?''.
"It's Dan, why do you ask me every time, didn't you save my number on that phone? I can't deal with you right now".
Sophia already feeling pissed at her brother comments, "What do you want, Daniel, or are you in trouble again''.
"I'm not in trouble, you need to quit worrying''. Daniel replies,
"Am calling about something else to worry about, Its Dad"
Her eyes now darkened with worry and lines engraved on her temple, "What happened this time?''.
"He had another heart attack early this morning and now he is in the hospital. I left him asleep this morning, I had to change my clothes and take my bath''.
Sophia, now tense with this sudden news, sat up on her bed desperate to hear her brother's conclusion of the event that took place.
"I just got a call from the nurse assigned to him, he has just woken up and is free from danger, he requests that you come to his dying aid and since I can't make it, I'm late for work as it is right now.
Sophia takes a glance at her table and her bed, knowing she would have no time to meet her dad. But knowing he is out of danger is a relief.
Daniel gives her no time to even reply to what he has said;
"Check on your dad, Sis. Talk to you later.''
Sophia hums quietly while trying to reach for slip-ons under the bed, it was a fresh morning and she needed coffee in her system as quickly as possible.
She hung up the call and freshened up whilst thinking of how she had to leave her dog again for another, a thought ran through her mind about leaving Roxy in the hands of Daniel but it would be a massacre to try that idea after the past event that occurred in their early childhood.
Their dad had just gotten a dog for her birthday since it was what she stubbornly wished for, unbeknownst to the entire household Daniel was petrified of the animal that had just strolled passed him and grew to fear the fluffy yet smart animal it was seen as.
At the closing of the birthday party, the dog chases Daniel through every corner of the mansion, without a thought of stopping, it is a highlight of the party that is still talked about to the present time.
Already dressed up, Sophia walks down to check on Roxy before leaving for the agency, she is stopped at the stairs as she is drawn to a surprising scene of her dog.
"Mm, you trying too hard this time. Take a break''.
She took a glance at her furry friend as she tied her brown hair into a bun, left astonished that Roxy fixed up the whole room, wore a dog leash and sat proudly in the middle of the room, waiting patiently to be rewarded by leaving with her.
Roxy stared at her like he was sinking into an abyss without a fight, totally helpless and willing.
Sophia sips her coffee silently, picks up her keys packs up the files she will be needing and drives out.
Doubting the health of her pet she pauses at her car door, heads back in, picks up her dog and starts the car.
She looks at Roxy with a slight smile; "Seems you got your way after all, you, sly beast''.
"Here's your ID card you will be needing, your document of internship and a GPS tracker, I'm not taking my eyes off you this time around''.
"Mark, here has already arranged your new place to stay and your assigned work and people to meet, he will be your eyes and ears like a minor hand from the agency. We don't want anybody this time".
Sofia seats calmly, crossing her legs and letting her gun and badge out on the table, looking sternly at the new assistant she had just been given, she looked down with a smile at the ID card, that had a nice picture of her, she has never taken such a normal job as an intern in a company. It was very much different from her day job.
"Okay Chief, but he should not get in my way and I need someone to take care of Roxy for me?''
Chief's face falls into confusion at Sophia's request, "Who or What is a Roxy and how does it affect my mission?
Sophia turned her head and skimmed through the office once again sighting some new shelves that had been put in place, "He is my dog, and needs to be looked after properly or does Mark here offer that service''.
Chief immediately shifts her attention to Mark, as he has now been turned into a part-time dog caretaker by Sophia.
"Okay, Mark will attend to your dog during your mission and since it's not overseas, he will return your dog at the end of each day. That's all I can do for you, Sophia.''
Sophia takes her leave with Mark and heads for the company and her target.
"Agent Smith, we should get you new clothes and run the crucial information on the target". Mark nervously tries to get her attention.
Sophia stops in her steps and turns back; "It's Sophia to you and stay out of my way, take care of my dog. That's your mission".
Mark wasn't sure how to react to her, he had never worked with Agent Smith before and had no idea how she worked, so he sighed and quietly worked behind her.
"Agent Smith!!!, watch out''. Mark's heart raced miles as the car brakes hit.
A black BWM stopped less than a mile away from them. The car door opened and the driver came down but Sophia was less than interested in starting words with another person.
"Miss, can you try to watch the road, everyone wants to get somewhere but not dead".
A manly voice faintly reached Sophia, she slowly turned her face to see the man who seemed formal yet not rouged enough to be a driver, he looked angry but his eyes widened out didn't exhibit any signs as he saw her face.
Sophia's voice was bold and clear. She looked calm and cold as usual and glanced at the car parked near the driver, "I didn't damage your car neither did I hit anyone".
The driver was amazed by her response, she didn't try to apologize for her speed and her tone was cold, almost harsh.
She glanced back at the BWM car waiting for its driver and saw a slow puff of smoke coming from the window It seemed the owner was calling for his driver.
"My boss wants you to come over'', the driver said still gazing into her eyes.
Sophia felt astonished by the words of the stranger in front of her, "And is that, if he wants to meet me, he might as well, come over''.
The driver now shocked by the guts of this young girl "Please come over miss''.
She glanced at the driver and the owner, came down and went to meet the proud and demanding man who already had her out of her car.
"Who are you and why are you wasting my time?'', a deep voice full of resentment even heartlessly cold spiked her anger.
CHAPTER THREE
"What did you just say?'', Sophia asked as her brows furrowed deep in reaction to what this stranger had just said.
Sofia stood there, unmoving, waiting for the next thing this rude figure of a man would say. She has always hated the way the rich and proud men of the world behaved when they felt everyone they met was their new toy to play with and order around as they pleased.
"Did I stutter?", he remarked to her, now his tone dropped in disgust to her pesky attitude.
He then winds down a bit to take a look at his new entertainment which doesn't seem to get the message clear.
"Mm, blue eyes, that's cute'' The man was scrutinizing her, looking at her like she was some kind of prey.
She glared at him as if he had killed multiple or even hundreds of men and wanted to sign him up for prison right there.
Under broad daylight, in the middle of a road where people and cars were passing by, it looked like time had paused.
"Where are you dying to go to?'', he asked, his gaze seem deadly than a sharp dagger focused on her bright blue eyes that seemed to have captured the sky in one wave.
As soon as their eyes met, Sophia felt nervous, she couldn't lie, he was good-looking and had an aura to his persona. He was tall had shiny dark hair looked rough yet organized purposely in a manner. He had a defined and masculine jawline. She was impressed by his looks. The way he looked at her as if she would melt within his gaze.
"My destination shouldn't concern you, tell your driver to keep his eyes on the road and stop interrogating people". Sophia replies to him without thought of insolent questioning.
"Do you know how I am?''
"No, and I don't need to know more of you''.
"Blue, you are quite an interesting person, till next time", he concluded and drove away.
Leaving Sophia aggravated and furious. No one had ever been so rude and made her feel like this before.
She turns back and heads to her car takes a few breaths and tucks away strands of her hair that had come out of place. Takes a second look at Mark who seemed to look puzzled about what or whom he had just seen.
He adjusts his glasses and his seat, and picks up the file with a puzzled look on his face, as if trying to recollect an image or event.
"Omg, I knew I knew that face from somewhere, that's our case, I mean target''.
"That's Alexander Royce, the young ruthless billionaire, how is this possible". Mark now petrified with fear and shock, thought about the scene he had just witnessed.
"Agent Smith, what should we do, he has seen you and it doesn't seem like you left a good impression of yourself'.
Sophia didn't even flinch at the news she had just heard, she didn't expect her first sight at her target would be on the road neither was she surprised by how he reacted. He was rich, even a billionaire at that.
"It's Sophia and he won't be the one that I'll be assigned to directly neither is he aware that am an agent''.
"That's right though''.
Mark sighs in relief and takes another look at the file, while Sophia drives off.
Dressed in navy blue pants and a tailored collar shirt, her composure was something unreal. She truly looked like a goddess who invoked not just power in her every stride but also grace and prestige, it would seem she was going for an executive position not just an intern to an assistant.
With the ID card hanging down her neck and files arranged in her hand, she took a couple of breaths, looked up to the heavens as if she had gone into a short prayer, and then quietly walked into the building.
A receptionist, eye glued on the screen of her laptop and phone glued to the side of her ear, saw how she entered; " Welcome and good morning miss, and how may I help you?''.
"I am here for the internship program, I applied for it last week and received an email to come for a post. 'Sophia locked eyes with the receptionist as she took notes of what she was saying through her computer.
"And are you with your documents and the printed ID card that was issued to you?''
"Yes''.
"There won't be any need for an interview it's not our system here, you have already been assigned to the executive assistant of the CEO.
"Okay then, where should I wait?'', Sophia asked already scanning her surroundings of the spacious walls that had a grey and a warm white comfort it gave the whole luxurious but empty feeling. No art painting or statues of any kind was put in place. The symbolic lines of the marble coffee table held only some files and cards. As she sat silently, a voice broke her chain of thoughts;
Nice to finally meet you, am the executive assistant, Yu Chen. But you can call me Nate, am sure she has put you through the process. You can follow me up now''.
She followed him closely as they headed to the elevator which brought them to his office, it was another grey but a neutral mix of black that exuded a sophisticated, it primed the room with a cool tone with each drape on the window, the sight of the city was indeed something to gape about, it made her think how it would look at night when the city was made alive.
"This is where you will be working from now, all files directed to me or the President should be either given to me to sign or kept by you. I expect an organized and excellent work, no slaggy behind and welcome''.
"Yes sir".
After his brief introduction, he gave out a warm smile and walked back into his office, she watched him quietly take his leave, another boss should have to answer to except the Chief and this time she would have to refer to him with some respect, she was already regretting this type of mission but it was too late to suddenly back out.
"This would be interesting''.
She was now in their system and had a small office beside the executive assistant, it was cosy and the only office she thought was painted all white for some reason, a mini workspace and already made files were assigned on her table. She took her seat and went through the wording of each file with care, she would only observe today and make connections to some workers.
After much work is done, she takes the files prepared to Yu Chen's office, he has ear pods on and has a smirk at the corner of his face as if he had just plotted a crime scene. He nodes for her to come inside and stared at her with one of his fingers up for her to pause;
"I will see you shortly, bye'', he hangs up and loses his ear free then looks back at her with a curious gaze.
"I'm here for your signature and these files are for the CEO, they needed his approval and signature to continue''. Sophia said unfazed, it sounded more like an order to him than a request.
"You catch up fast, I like that. A smart learner, my previous assistant only made sure to apply her makeup before she resolved company work, which she still fails".
''Thanks, sir''.
''Leave all these here and carry the files for the President, I have a meeting with him. Make sure to stand behind me, and don't utter a word or else you are told to''. Yu Chen told her sternly knowing the type of man they were going to be facing soon.
A soft knock breaks the silent echo of a room-like vault, it was well designed and elegant, and fragile glass works took the post of each corner giving the dark painting of the office a surreal cold vibe. A tall figure of a man stood near the door, he looked quite rogue yet composed, like an honourable soldier.
A slow smoke puffs out of the seat, leaving the atmosphere with a warm, sweet herbaceous scent, with a mild hint of whiskey and hay. Sophia wondered how the man at the door could take this scent for a while, it was like a perfume smell.
"Sir, I have made the calls and the files are here''.
The chair circles back into a better position for sight and there he was, his brown eyes were something so captivating, and his jawline flinched in response to what had just been said. He held his cigar in between his fingers as he smoked it out.
He looked up at his assistant and then got a glimpse of something he was familiar with.
"Isn't that, Blue?'', he said calmly, with his sharp eyes still on her.
