But everything changes when billionaire CEO Ethan Caldwell suddenly walks back into her life. Cold, powerful, and dangerously perceptive, Ethan offers Clara an arrangement she cannot refuse-one that forces them to live under the same roof. What Ethan doesn't know is that the twins who instantly capture his attention might be more connected to him than he realizes. As sparks ignite and tensions rise, secrets begin to surface. A ruthless corporate enemy is watching. And the truth about that forgotten night is closer to being exposed. When the truth finally comes out, Ethan will have to face the one thing he never expected... The family he never knew he had. And Clara must decide whether she can trust the man who once walked out of her life without even remembering.

Chapter 1 The Day Everything Changed

The morning sun had barely crested the skyline when Clara Bennett adjusted the crisp folds of her blazer, standing by the floor-to-ceiling window of her small, temporary office in Sydney's central business district. Outside, the city stretched endlessly-a river of cars, trams, and people chasing opportunity. She should have felt proud. After five long years of financial ruin, her fledgling company was slowly clawing its way back. But pride was a luxury she couldn't afford this morning.

Her thoughts weren't on profit margins, mergers, or marketing strategies. They were on the two pairs of little feet pattering across the apartment upstairs. Her twins. Her world. Her secret.

"Liam, stop drawing on the wall!" she called without turning, her voice calm but firm.

A muffled giggle echoed from the other room.

She rubbed her temple, letting out a soft sigh. Raising five-year-old twins alone had a rhythm all its own. Liam, her quiet, observant boy, already displayed uncanny intelligence and a seriousness that reminded her disturbingly of the man who had changed her life forever. Isla, her mischievous little girl, was her mirror: fiery, protective, and unapologetically chaotic.

Clara reminded herself of the rules. Keep them safe. Keep them hidden. Keep them away from the one man who, without knowing it, had tied their fates to his own decades before.

Because today... everything was about to change.

The Call

The phone on her desk buzzed insistently, dragging her back to reality. She picked it up with professional calm.

"Hello?"

A deep, controlled voice, smooth but edged with authority, came through the line.

"Clara Bennett?"

She straightened. The voice was familiar-oddly familiar-and yet she shook her head, insisting on professionalism.

"Yes. Who is this?"

"I'm Ethan Walker," he said. The name made her stomach clench. Ethan Walker-the billionaire, the man she had once met on a night she could barely remember, a night that had left her with the heaviest secret she had ever carried. "I'd like to meet. Today."

Her pulse quickened, but her expression remained neutral. "And what exactly would a billionaire want with me?"

"A business proposal," he said, curt. But there was something in his tone-something commanding, possessive, a trace of interest. The kind that made you listen even if you had every reason to walk away.

She pinched the bridge of her nose, trying to stop her mind from racing. This was dangerous. Dangerous for her. Dangerous for her twins. Dangerous for the fragile life she had built in the shadows.

"I'll meet," she said finally. "But only in my office."

A pause. Then, "Of course."

The Arrival

By mid-morning, Ethan Walker arrived in his trademark black Mercedes, descending with the precision of a man used to commanding the world. He was even taller than she remembered, with sharp features, piercing eyes, and the calm, overwhelming aura of someone used to being obeyed.

He didn't smile. He didn't greet. He simply looked around the office, then at her.

"You're Clara Bennett," he said, voice low, almost measuring.

"Yes," she replied, keeping her tone polite but firm. "And you are Mr. Walker."

He nodded. Then his gaze softened-just slightly. Something flickered in his expression as though he sensed a connection, though he could not place it.

"Do you know why I'm here?"

She raised an eyebrow. "You just said it was a business proposal."

"Yes," he said, with an edge that made her spine stiffen. "But it's more than that."

Her heart skipped a beat-not out of love, not out of longing, but instinct. Something about him... the way he spoke, the way he carried himself, suggested he had underestimated how much control he could wield over her. And he had, once, without even realizing it.

The Contract

The meeting was tense. Ethan presented documents, terms, numbers-but beneath the corporate language was a weight she could not ignore.

"You need a partner," he said flatly. "I need a wife."

Clara blinked, processing.

"You... need a wife?"

"Yes," he replied, completely serious. "A public spouse. A partner in appearance, at least, for one year. After that, we negotiate the terms. You get what you want, I get what I want. Everyone wins."

Her mind reeled. A contract marriage. That had been a trope in the stories she had read, but she had never imagined living it. Especially not with him.

"I see," she said, keeping her voice calm. "And what exactly do you get from me?"

"Compliance," he said. "Respect. Presence at all required events. Discretion. And..." His eyes locked onto hers, sharp as a blade, "...nothing else. You do your work. I do mine. Simple."

Her pulse was hammering. The irony was bitter: he wanted a wife publicly, but she already had two children he didn't know existed. The children he had fathered on a night he didn't remember.

She swallowed. "And if I refuse?"

He leaned back, calm, but his tone suggested no tolerance for defiance.

"You'd be walking away from the very chance to rebuild what you've lost."

The Twins' Subtle Interference

Back at home, the twins were playing quietly. Liam built a tower of blocks with perfect symmetry. Isla knocked it down gleefully.

"You're just like your dad," Liam murmured.

Isla scowled. "Don't say that!"

Clara's heart skipped. She had warned them not to speak of him, not even in jest. But she couldn't scold them now-they didn't understand.

She took a deep breath, remembering the stakes. The twins' innocence had to be protected. No one could ever know.

The Decision

By late afternoon, Clara returned to her office with the contract in hand. Ethan was still there, standing, eyes scanning the skyline of Sydney Harbour.

"You'll sign?" he asked, calm, controlled, dominant.

She paused, considering.

One year. One year to secure her empire, protect her twins, and-if necessary-keep him at bay.

She thought of the twins upstairs, of the nights she had cried silently over what she had been forced to endure, of the legacy that had been stolen from her.

Her voice was steady. "I'll sign."

He smiled-just a fraction-and for a moment, something unspoken passed between them. Tension, recognition, and the faintest trace of curiosity.

Neither of them knew it yet, but this contract was more than a legal agreement. It was a collision of past sins, hidden truths, and two lives forever intertwined.

The First Hint of Danger

As Clara placed her signature on the contract, a shadow flickered outside the glass window.

In the background, unnoticed, someone was watching. A figure older, calculating, calm-the kind of presence that had orchestrated every misstep leading to this moment.

The grandfather. His fingers tapped lightly on a cane, a smile playing at the corner of his lips. Everything was proceeding exactly as he had planned.

And Clara... and Ethan... had no idea how tangled their lives would become.

Chapter 2 Living With a Stranger

The first morning of Clara Bennett's new life began with the sound of a horn outside her apartment in Sydney's Darling Harbour. She stirred, forcing herself to stay calm. Today, she would officially move in with Ethan Walker.

The reality was... unnerving.

Her twins, Liam and Isla, were wide awake, chattering excitedly in the small apartment. "Mum, are we really going to see Uncle Ethan today?" Isla asked, her green eyes sparkling.

Clara froze. Uncle Ethan. That was what she had instructed them to call him-innocent, careful, not revealing the truth.

"Yes, darling," Clara said, keeping her tone neutral. "But remember, we are not friends yet. He doesn't know us properly."

Liam frowned. "Why doesn't he know us?"

Clara's chest tightened. She kneeled to look at him. "Because... some things are complicated. You'll understand when you're older. For now, we just stay smart and careful."

He nodded solemnly, as if he truly understood. Isla, meanwhile, rolled her eyes dramatically, already scheming ways to charm the man she had never met.

The Arrival at Ethan's Penthouse

By late morning, Clara, the twins, and a small suitcase of essentials arrived at Ethan Walker's penthouse in Barangaroo. The view stretched from the harbour bridge to the Opera House, glinting in the early sunlight. The luxury and scale of the apartment made Clara swallow hard.

Ethan was already waiting. Standing rigidly in a tailored black suit, he exuded the same calm dominance that had unnerved her the day before.

"Clara," he said, acknowledging her with a nod. "And... these are the children?"

"Yes," Clara replied, keeping her voice polite. She stepped forward, placing herself slightly between him and the twins.

Ethan knelt down, studying them carefully. Liam mirrored his father in posture-quiet, cautious, observing every detail. Isla, on the other hand, bounced forward. "Hi! I'm Isla. That's Liam. Are you our dad?"

Clara's stomach clenched. "Isla, remember what we said."

"I know," Isla said, grinning innocently. "I'm just asking!"

Ethan's eyes narrowed, a flicker of recognition-or was it curiosity?-crossing his face. He didn't speak immediately, just observed.

Clara felt a shiver. He's noticing something...

The Rules of Coexistence

Ethan's voice finally broke the silence. "We'll need rules."

Clara raised an eyebrow. "Rules?"

"Yes. You live here. The twins live here. And I want no surprises, no interference, and no drama."

Clara nodded. "Fine. There are rules on my side too." She glanced at the twins. "Listen carefully: do exactly what I say. Understood?"

"Understood," Liam said solemnly. Isla rolled her eyes but nodded, already plotting ways to soften the stern man before them.

Ethan turned his gaze back to Clara. "Good. Then we begin."

And with that, he gestured for them to follow him inside.

First Tensions

Inside the penthouse, the twins immediately explored every corner, while Clara unpacked essentials in the bedroom she had been allocated. Ethan followed her silently, his hands behind his back, watching every move.

"You've organized everything meticulously," he said finally. "I like efficiency."

Clara didn't smile. "I've had to learn fast. Raising twins alone teaches efficiency."

He glanced at the twins, who were now standing near the window, gazing at the harbour. "They're... impressive," he said, as if speaking more to himself than her.

"Thank you," she said carefully, noticing the slight warmth in his tone.

A pause hung between them-filled with unspoken tension, past sins neither acknowledged, and the faint but undeniable attraction simmering beneath their professional exchange.

The Twins Make Their Move

After a quiet lunch, Isla tugged at Ethan's sleeve. "Do you like superheroes?"

He blinked, unsure how to answer. "Superheroes?"

"Yes! You look like one!" she said, pointing at his posture and presence.

Liam, ever the observant one, added quietly, "You know, Dad, you're... tall, quiet, and scary sometimes."

Clara's eyes widened. "Dad?" She shot the twins a warning glance, but it was too late. Ethan's gaze snapped to Liam, confused.

"Dad?" he echoed. His expression was unreadable.

"Yes," Liam said innocently. "Mum says you're our uncle, but I think you're our dad."

Clara felt her stomach drop. Liam had crossed a line, not intentionally, but his words carried the weight of truth. She stepped forward quickly.

"Liam! Stop!" she whispered fiercely.

Ethan's jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing slightly. Something flickered behind them-recognition? Confusion? Or an instinct he didn't understand.

Living Together – A Fragile Balance

The afternoon stretched on with quiet, tense interactions. Clara tried to maintain authority, keeping her twins safe from revealing the truth. Ethan, meanwhile, seemed unusually interested in their behavior, asking subtle questions about routines, habits, and past life.

It was a delicate dance. Every glance, every word had weight.

When the children were finally sent to bed, Clara and Ethan remained in the living room, facing each other across the massive leather sofa.

"You're hiding something," he said, finally breaking the silence.

Clara stiffened. "I'm protecting my children. That's all."

"I can tell it's more than that," he said, leaning forward. "I feel... something. They remind me of someone. Someone I should know."

Clara's heart raced. He's starting to put pieces together...

"I'm sure it's just your imagination," she said calmly, though her fingers tightened on the sofa edge.

He studied her silently. "We'll see."

The First Hint of Danger

Outside, perched in the shadow of the balcony, someone watched. A figure older, cane in hand, expression unreadable, eyes calculating.

The grandfather. His plan was moving perfectly. He had orchestrated the one-night encounter years ago, and now the hero and heroine were dancing right into the trap.

And the twins... the twins were the unwitting catalysts.

Chapter 3 Small Storms

Morning sunlight spilled through the tall windows of Ethan Kingsley's mansion, painting golden reflections across the polished floor.

Clara Bennett stood in the kitchen, holding a cup of coffee she had already forgotten to drink.

She was staring at the two small whirlwinds racing around the living room.

"Liam! Isla! Slow down!" she called.

But the twins were not interested in slowing down.

Five-year-old Liam zoomed past the couch holding a toy airplane, making loud engine noises.

"Captain Liam is landing!" he shouted.

His sister Isla chased after him with a stuffed rabbit in her hand.

"No! You're crashing into Bunny Island!"

Clara rubbed her forehead.

Living with the twins had always been chaos.

But living with the twins inside a billionaire's glass mansion?

That was an entirely different level of danger.

Liam skidded across the floor and nearly collided with a marble side table.

"Liam!" Clara gasped.

Before she could reach him-

A deep voice cut across the room.

"Careful."

Liam stopped immediately.

Both children turned.

Standing at the entrance of the living room was Ethan Kingsley, dressed in a dark suit, his presence instantly filling the space with quiet authority.

He had clearly just come downstairs.

His eyes moved from Liam to Isla... then to Clara.

The twins stared at him with open curiosity.

Liam tilted his head.

"Are you the rich man?"

Clara nearly dropped her coffee.

"Liam!"

Ethan blinked once.

Then, unexpectedly, a faint smile touched the corner of his mouth.

"I suppose that depends on who's asking," he replied.

Liam walked closer, studying him very seriously.

"Mummy said we're staying here for a while."

Clara shot him a warning look.

But Ethan's gaze had shifted to Clara now.

"So they know," he said quietly.

Clara sighed.

"They're children, Ethan. They ask questions."

Isla tugged on Clara's sleeve.

"Mummy, is he our landlord?"

Clara froze.

Ethan's eyebrow lifted.

"Landlord?" he repeated.

Clara cleared her throat.

"Well... technically..."

Liam suddenly grabbed Ethan's hand.

"Your house is really big!" he said enthusiastically.

Clara's heart jumped.

She waited for Ethan to pull his hand away.

He didn't.

Instead, Ethan looked down at Liam thoughtfully.

"Do you like airplanes?" he asked.

Liam's face lit up.

"Yes!"

Ethan pointed toward the massive window overlooking the ocean.

"Sometimes helicopters land on the helipad behind the house."

Liam gasped.

"Really?!"

Clara stared at Ethan.

This was not the cold billionaire she expected.

Isla suddenly climbed onto the couch and bounced.

"Do you have ice cream here?"

Clara groaned.

"Isla..."

Ethan looked mildly amused.

"I believe the kitchen is well stocked."

"YES!" Isla cheered.

Before Clara could stop her, Isla sprinted toward the kitchen.

Liam ran after her.

The house fell quiet again.

Clara exhaled slowly.

"Sorry about that."

Ethan crossed his arms.

"They're energetic."

"That's a polite way of saying exhausting."

Ethan studied her for a moment.

"You manage them alone?"

Clara nodded.

"I've had practice."

There was a brief silence.

Then Ethan asked casually,

"And their father?"

Clara stiffened slightly.

"Not around."

Ethan's eyes narrowed slightly.

But he didn't press further.

Instead, he glanced toward the hallway where the twins had disappeared.

"They're comfortable here already."

Clara smiled faintly.

"Children adapt faster than adults."

Ethan's gaze returned to her.

"That depends."

Clara raised an eyebrow.

"On what?"

"On how honest the adults are being."

The tension between them thickened.

Clara held his gaze.

"You think I'm lying about something?"

Ethan didn't answer directly.

But the look in his eyes suggested he suspected more than he said.

Before Clara could respond, Ethan's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

The relaxed mood vanished.

"Problem?" Clara asked.

Ethan's jaw tightened slightly.

"My company just lost a major contract."

Clara frowned.

"That happens in business, doesn't it?"

"Not like this."

He turned the phone slightly so she could see the headline.

KINGSLEY GROUP LOSES MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR TECH CONTRACT TO RIVAL COMPANY.

Clara read the name beneath the article.

Her stomach tightened.

Because she recognized it.

Very well.

Ethan was watching her closely now.

"You've heard of them," he said.

It wasn't a question.

Clara forced herself to stay calm.

"Yes."

Ethan stepped closer.

"They're new," he continued slowly.

"Very aggressive."

Clara folded her arms.

"Competition is healthy."

Ethan's eyes darkened slightly.

"Not when they appear overnight and start targeting my contracts."

Clara shrugged lightly.

"Maybe someone finally decided to challenge the king."

The moment the words left her mouth, the room went silent.

Ethan stared at her.

Something about the look in his eyes made Clara's heartbeat quicken.

"You're surprisingly defensive of them," he said quietly.

Clara forced a casual tone.

"I just don't like monopolies."

Ethan studied her as if trying to read something deeper beneath the surface.

Then his phone vibrated again.

Another message.

He glanced at it.

And this time-

His expression hardened.

Completely.

"What is it?" Clara asked.

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

His voice was colder now.

"Interesting."

Clara's stomach twisted.

"Why?"

Ethan turned the screen toward her.

Another headline had appeared.

MYSTERIOUS NEW COMPANY CEO ANNOUNCES EXPANSION INTO Sydney MARKET.

And beneath the headline...

Was a blurred photograph.

Of a woman leaving a corporate building.

Clara felt the blood drain from her face.

Because even though the image was blurry-

It looked very much like her.

Ethan's eyes locked onto hers.

His voice dropped.

"Clara..."

A slow, dangerous pause followed.

"Is there something you want to tell me?"

Across the hallway, Liam and Isla's laughter echoed through the mansion.

But in the living room-

The tension had turned into a storm waiting to explode.
