Chapter 1: The Unexpected Happens
Kira's POV
"Kevin Chester!" I shout angrily.
Everywhere falls silent. I did not think that would cause such a reaction. The billionaire everyone here seems to be afraid of is already turning towards me.
As he walks further, I hold on to my mopping stick like it will save me from this mess I am getting into.
"No, Kira this is not a mess" I reassure myself. Someone would have to show this man he is not really what he thinks he is.
This is my first day working as a cleaner in Chester Incorporated and I am already confronting my employer. I had hoped I would make enough money for my mother's treatment. With the look of things now, I do not think that would be possible.
I just cannot stand arrogance and wickedness. Same thing that led my father to the state he is in now. So, clearly it is in my genes and I do not think I am at fault for that.
He is just an inch away from me now. He is staring directly into my eyes. I could not back down now no matter the consequences.
"Why would you throw your mother out thereby disgracing her publicly?" I manage to say with the best look of irritation combined with disgust and other bad feelings you can think of written on my face.
The silence is still there. I am irritated the more by how everyone is pretending to be doing one thing or the other.
"What is special about you? There are many billionaires on the face of the earth. You are not the first and would definitely not be the last" I thought to myself while maintaining the most fearless stance I could pull off.
"No matter what she did. You should not have humiliated her. It is very unkind and ungrateful of you" I continue.
"I know this might be the last time I will ever work here but that will not stop me from telling you the plain truth".
I can already hear Ava coming near us. She must have heard that her dear best friend is about to lose her job by confronting her employer.
"Sir, I am really sorry this is happening", Ava pleads.
"It is just her mother's ill health that is getting to her nowadays. It has taken a toll on her mental health Please disregard whatever she is saying" Ava concludes.
While I am happy that she stood up for me, I definitely do not like how she went about doing it.
First of, she should not have used my mother's situation to make up a lie for this man who I do not think can relate to such a problem. He certainly does not value the worth of a mother. She is free to use any other situation except my mother.
I was going to sort that with her later.
After this.
I also do not like how she is depicting me to be mentally unstable and weak. Now, I am looking like one of the terrible jokes my father always says just to annoy the hell out of me. My reason for speaking out is not as a result of my mother's state.
Or is it?
"I do not like this, you know that right." I quietly whisper to her ear.
''You do not have to like it. Just say sorry.'' Ava replies.
I knew she was just trying out her luck in getting me to apologize. She obviously knew I was not one to back down in any situation when I am clearly not wrong.
She does not bother to persuade me again.
Kevin Chester is still looking at me.
At us.
He is probably scheming on how best he could punish us for this confrontation.
This is my first time seeing him. But I usually heard some female employees drooling over his physical appearance.
"He is very tall, thick and muscular. His blue dreamy eyes make me feel like I am about to drown in them'' I had heard one female employee say one time while smiling like someone who had won the grand lottery prize. Others around her seemed to also agree with what she said.
One of them even added ''I had heard he does not like being in a relationship. All his body and money being wasted''
Now that I think about it, it is most certainly his pride and negative attitudes that is making it impossible for him to have a woman in his life. It is people like him that use and dump women to inflate their ego.
In a bid to ease the tension between us, I start to do a quick assessment of him.
I look from his head down to his toe. Those ladies did not lie one bit. He is everything they said he was. This is probably one of his sources of his pride apart from his money.
I do not know what is keeping me glued on this spot. I had planned to leave almost immediately after saying my mind.
No, the truth as it is.
I guess it is because Ava had come and I possibly could not leave her after she tried to plead on my behalf.
I would not make my best friend look like a fool before this man. Never.
I could no longer bear to stay here any longer. I have said what I had intended to say and it was time to leave for good.
''It is okay. I will leave now" I say with a grateful tone to Ava.
The one thing I am worried about is whether my action would cost Ava her job.
I immediately start walking towards the entrance when I heard a voice.
"Wait", the voice says.
It has an authoritative air to it.
Like the person is used to giving orders without expecting to be questioned.
It sounded like Kevin Chester's voice. I have never heard him speak but I am sure he is the only one who would speak amidst everything that had just happened.
For sure it is him. Ava has a surprised look when I turned around.
"Ryan", he calls.
Ryan Clark managing director of Chester Incorporated. He was more like the second-in-command after Kevin from what I had heard from other employees.
"Yes, Kevin?" Ryan responds with a look of uncertainty on his face.
He starts staring at me like he is searching for something.
Then I notice he starts staring at the birthmark I had at my jaw. I do not know if it is fascinating to him or not.
My mother usually tells me that people were fascinated by it when I was a baby. She says that it has gotten a little smaller now that I'm grown up.
"Make her my P.A" he orders.
I could not believe my ears. So, I turn to Ava to see if she had just heard what I heard from him.
From Kevin Chester.
From the very man I just confronted and was expecting to be sacked or even tormented.
I am too stunned to speak as he immediately starts to head towards the elevator.
"Why did you not sack me?" I manage to mutter.
He just keeps on walking like he did not just do the unexpected.
Chapter 2: It Only Gets Worse
Kira's POV
Three days earlier.......
"Kira" I hear my name from a distance.
I wonder who is calling me. I do not keep any friends in my neighborhood and I try to mind my business as much as I can.
I do not turn to look back and I increase my pace fast enough but not noticeable to whoever is calling me.
"Kira, Kira, can you not hear me?" the voice persisted.
As the person keeps coming closer, I realize it is my best friend, Ava calling me.
I know she will be mad if I tell her that I did not realize she was the one calling me. She would then talk about how she would immediately know I am around her just by my scent. Playfully, she would accuse me of not being a true friend.
"Did you not hear me calling your name?" Ava questioned.
"Well, I was about...."
"Do not try to lie to me Kira. You did not recognize my voice. I can......"
".... sense you are the one even if you are a 100 miles away from me".
I help her complete her sentence so she would not have to. She has been saying this line for as long as I can remember.
"But what do you always think about?" Ava asked me.
I guess this is a question that does not need my answer because she clearly knows what I think about. I tell her everything without keeping even the tiniest information from her.
"I know a lot is happening right now, but you just need to stop worrying" Ava continued. I was right. She definitely knew what has been going through my mind she just felt the need to ask to sound more caring I guess.
All of a sudden, she just starts smiling sheepishly at me. I am confused by how she has just switched from worrying about me to smiling like her gym crush had finally asked her out on a date.
"Why are you smiling?"
"Guess," she responded while still smiling wildly.
The only time I had seen her smile to this extent was when her dad had promised to get her a car after college. She had gotten in a ghastly accident just a week later after her father had given her the car. Ever since then, she has developed a phobia for driving any automobile. I wonder what name this phobia would be called.
"Seriously, you will not even try to guess? You can be impossible some times. Actually most times", she said trying to feign anger. My head is actually blank and I know Ava will not let me be unless I give her a million possible guesses. I decide I will keep saying anything just to get her to angrily say it.
"You have a date to attend this weekend?" I answered.
"Well.... I would have liked that. But that is not it" she responded.
"Mira has finally given birth after her previous miscarriages" I tried to guess again.
Mira is her pet dog who has had about five miscarriages in the past. She has gotten weak over the years. Ava had named her Mira after her brother, Michael and me, Kira. She took the first two letters of Michael's name and the last two letters of my name. When I had asked her why she chose to do that, she said she saw both of our qualities in the dog. Michael was energetic and I was resilient. The dog had those two qualities.
"Why do you have to remind me about Mira's condition? She is going through a lot now and I feel really sad when I look at her." She stopped to wipe a tear that was beginning to drop on her cheek.
"Kira, you are trying to change the subject of our discussion" she accused me. I did not plan to do that but that was a smart idea I will take note of in our future "guess it" discussions.
"No, I was not trying to change the discussion" I try to sound as truthful as possible.
"Anyways, I guess I will have to tell you then. You are very very bad at guessing" she says while holding my hand as we walk down to the path leading to my house.
"Well it is regarding our last discussion"
We said a lot of things when last we met. I cannot really figure which one she was talking about.
"Which one in particular?" I asked.
"Oh my goodness, do you ever remember anything at all? I told you I was going to check for available job vacancies that you can apply for" she responded.
I remember us talking about job vacancies but I knew there would be no outcome from it. I had searched the whole of Northam and had not found any. I was either rejected, ignored or told that I was over qualified. At this point, I think I have given up.
"I overheard the HR of my workplace saying they had a vacant position they needed to fill up and I recommended you" Ava reveals.
Ava has always been a supportive friend right from day one. I was so happy at this news that I hug her tightly and did not let go until she pinches my right arm.
"So, what is the job description?" I try to ask amidst my excitement.
"It is the job of a cleaner" Ava says with a low tone.
While this was not the job I had been hoping for, I am grateful to Ava for helping me source for one.
"It is okay Ava. I am perfectly fine with it. It will help sort some of my pending responsibilities" I said to express my appreciation.
"Ok then, just arrive on Monday and you will be directed to the HR's office".
She hugs me tight and bids me goodnight.
I am not able to sleep at all as I am so happy that I will finally have a stable job to help me parents. I do not know why I have a good feeling about this job. I must do my best in impressing whoever would interview me.
Present......
"Girl, did you pluck a four-leaf clover?" Ava asks me as we step out of Chester Incorporated.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"Like seriously, what just happened there is completely normal to you?"
"I know it is not normal but what do you expect me to do. I have been searching for a job and this shows up so I have no choice" I respond.
"Are you not scared one bit?" Ava queries.
"To be honest I am not scared. I am just wondering what he is trying to achieve with this move" I answer.
"I am not trying to scare you with what I am about to tell you now but I just have to tell you". Ava says.
"Go on, say it" I reply.
"His former P.A was sacked for reasons no one knows about. You know I am quite close to the HR. Even the HR does not know the reason which just makes everything more suspicious. No one has been sacked before without nobody knowing the reasons behind it" Ava says with a low tone that showed she was scared for me.
"So, you think he might do that to me?" I ask to be sure of what she meant.
"Knowing Kevin Chester, nothing he does has ever been good, it only gets worse" Ava replies with a tone of finality.
Chapter 3: As Confused As Ever
I enter Chester Incorporated not as a cleaner but as the personal assistant of the CEO himself, Kevin Chester. I put on the suit I had borrowed from Ava yesterday. I could not let Kevin Chester think I was a daughter of a nobody. So, I had to look my best and not give him a chance to ridicule me.
"Welcome, Miss Kira" the HR greeted me as I arrived the reception.
She had never addressed me as "Miss Kira" since I came for the interview and I started my work yesterday. I guess with a new rank comes a new title.
"Good morning Miss...." I realize that I do not even know her name.
"Miss Lucille" she promptly said.
"Let me take you to where your office is" she says while leading the way.
I did not even know that I would have an office. The P.A's I see in most movies wait on their bosses like babysitters. We stepped into the elevator and she set it to take us to the 12th floor. The 12th floor was where the CEO and top executives had their offices. Just yesterday I resumed as a cleaner for the ground floor and now I am in the same floor as the directors of this establishment.
When we got out of the elevator, the sight before me was screaming luxury. The furniture and décor looked very expensive. Soon, I was standing in front of my new office.
"Miss Kira this is your office. Please settle down real quick and wait for orders from the CEO" she said as she turned to leave. I was checking out the office when I heard a set of heels approaching. It was Miss Lucille.
"I have important tips for you. Kevin Chester values his privacy so much. Don't enter his office without being asked to. Don't pick up his phone for whatever reason. Don't talk too much. Always arrive on time and never keep him waiting. Last but not the least, memorize his schedules by heart. He likes sharp employees. Well, these are the only unspoken rules I can remember for now. I'll email the rest when I remember"
As she turned to go, she says in a low tone "No one knows why his former P.A was sacked. I have written sack letters for nine persons who worked as his P.A since I joined this company nine years ago. There was no concrete reason to why they were sacked. I will not like to write a tenth sack letter this year. Try your best, Kira" she says with a tone that shows she really cares.
"Wait"
I want to thank her for the tips and tell her I'll do my best to try not to be sacked. To be honest, if she had not informed of these rules I would have straight up knocked on the door of his office and asked for what he would have me do today.
"I just want to thank you for the advice. I really appreciate".
"It is fine. From my little encounter with you, you can be a handful but I am confident that when you really desire something, you go all out for it. Best of luck" she concluded and went out of my office.
I am sure it was because of yesterday's scenario she called me a handful. Anyways, I have decided that I will endure any shit he does just for one month so I can collect my salary. Then, if I cannot take it any longer I'll resign willingly. Miss Lucille would not get the chance to write the tenth sack letter rather she would receive the first resignation letter in 10 years. I wonder if this feat could make it to the Guinness world records.
I checked the cabinet, desks for files or anything I could work on. I found nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
I just realize how foolish I am for not asking Miss Lucille what I should work on. I do not know her office telephone number. I also do not want to go to her office because I do not want to keep Kevin waiting if he suddenly calls for my attention.
Hours passed until it I was awakened by the chit-chats I heard from outside. I check my phone for the time. It is 12 o'clock. It must be lunch break because this is around the time Ava calls me in the afternoon on Weekdays.
I stepped out of my office still stretching when I saw different employees in well-tailored designer suits and shoes. I am grateful that Ava had forced me to take one of our suits. Not really because I cared for it but because it would have attracted attention to myself and I certainly did not want that on the first day as the CEO's P.A.
I slipped away in the direction of the elevator before I would be noticed by someone. As I was about stepping into the elevator, I heard someone whisper "Is she not the girl who challenged the CEO yesterday? She really has the audacity. Now, that she is his P.A I am sure he has something lined up for her. And that something is definitely not good and I cannot wait to see her being frustrated and disgraced."
I resisted the urge to turn back and confront the person. For two reasons. Why would she call me a girl? I mean, I am a girl but the context it was used in and the tone in which it was said was disrespectful. Also, why would she want to see me being frustrated and disgraced? This company is for sure a toxic workplace with only three sane workers I have seen. Me, Ava and the latest addition Miss Lucille.
Ava takes me to the staff cafeteria so we can have our lunch. In the middle of our lunch of pasta and meatballs, I start to rant about how I am bored with no work to do, the tips Miss Lucille gave me and what I heard an employee say about me.
"I think Kevin Chester's punishment is to kill you with boredom if you ask me or what do you think?"
Ava replies while laughing.
A week passes and it is the same pattern. I arrive at the office. I take a nap till it is lunch break, have my lunch, browse the internet or listen to podcasts, anyone my mood agrees to and then head home with Ava.
I arrive work on Monday and about to take a nap when a weird shrill noise starts. I am started a little bit and look around to see where the noise is coming from. It is the company's telephone that was on top a cabinet. Why would a telephone be placed on a cabinet anyways? It's supposed to be on a desk. I have never noticed it before. I reach out for it and answer it.
"Kira, your attention is needed. Come to the office of the CEO" the person orders.
It should be Ryan Clark, the second-in- command to Kevin. I had learnt he was the one who stood in for Kevin at all the meetings that were held last week.
"I am right on my way, sir" I respond and begin to go to his office.
I wonder what he would need me for. He had his own P.A and he had never even spoken to me before. Probably Kevin has some work he needs me to attend to.
I am ushered into his office by his secretary. I had not prepared myself to see Kevin on his seat. He's looking through some files with Ryan and did not notice when I had entered. His secretary informed him of my arrival. Ryan and his secretary take their leave while I'm standing before him.
"Lisa" he says while putting on a smile that looks more like a smirk.
How could he not even know my name? What type of CEO does not know the name of an employee they personally employed?
"It is Kira sir. Kira Mason" I promptly correct him.
"No, you're Lisa. I know you are. Don't confuse me" he says angrily while staring at me and holding his head.
"Aaargggh what's happening?" he screams. At this point I do not know to do. Ryan comes in just in time.
"Kira, leave" he shouts at me. I do not know why but I stood there watching Kevin mumbling some words with his head on his desk.
"Kira, I said leave!" this time Ryan seems angrier. I immediately leave his office.
His secretary looks at me with pity. I walk fast to my office so I can relate all that just happened to Ava because I am as confused as ever.
