Chapter 1 TAKING OVER

"I dance like nobody is watching but you, I sing like nobody is listening but you..." Jessica Walters woke up to a soft tune playing from a

huge sound box positioned in the far left corner of her very spacious master bedroom. Jessica, aged 28, was the only child of the Late Jordan Walters, the CEO of Daglo Holdings, one of the top largest Tech companies globally.

Jordan died two years ago of a heart attack, leaving behind a plenitude of very valuable assets and great wealth for his wife and daughters, one of which was the company. Jessica's mother and younger sister lived together in a neighbouring city. Mrs Walters was diagnosed with a health condition that made her spend most of her time at home, while Jessica's younger sister, Linda worked from home, to spend time with her mother. Jessica visited them at least once in two months.

Jessica had always been involved in the affairs of the company since

she was a kid; this helped her to understand the operations and management

of the company. She became the CEO of Daglo Holdings after the death of her father.

"Good morning ma", one of the maids greeted Jessica as she walked hurriedly

across the room to press the controller button for the curtains to be pulled over,

with a tray of coffee in her hands. As the curtains folded up, a ray of

sunshine hit Jessica in the face and she grunted slightly. Jessica had stayed

in bed longer than usual. It was a long week for her, as she had worked

tirelessly on a project her company had embarked on. She had informed her staff that she would be taking the day off to rest to regain some strength.

Jessica never missed her morning ritual of drinking a cup of coffee and working out in her In-house gym. She sat up to sip from the cup of coffee, with her arms gently folded and her legs folded crossly; she smiled mildly as she took a sip immediately. Her hair was a rich shade like blossoming flowers; it flowed in waves to adorn her glowing, porcelain-like skin. Her eyes, framed by short lashes, were bright, emerald-greened, and seemed to brighten the world. A smoking shining nose, and full lips - she seemed the picture of perfection. Her bosom was mature red for her age. Finally, she got out of bed to prepare for her workout.

Jessica had completed her workout, so she returned to her room when she heard the telephone ring.

"Madam, Breakfast will be ready in thirty minutes," Kevin, her butler's voice echoed

from the intercom.

Suddenly her table landline began to ring out loudly which left Jessica wondering who it could be because she hardly receives calls.

Most of Jessica's friends were business-related. She had close to no friends outside of work, nor a social life, so receiving a call early in the morning was somewhat strange to her.

"Hello please who is this?", She said, but there was total silence coming from the unknown caller, then she rolled her eyes and asked again, but this time, more aggressively,

"Please who is on the phone?" Then she heard the unknown caller speak up, "Hello, madam! Hello madam! It's me, Janet, I have been trying to reach you on your line for a while, but it's been unreachable, I guess the network coverage is generally bad", she said. "Oh, Janet how are you?" Jessica responded.

"I am doing very well madam. A man is here in the office; he claims he has an appointment with you today ma," Janet responded hurriedly. "Whatever appointments I have today should be rescheduled for tomorrow. I would be in the office tomorrow," Jessica responded.

"Okay ma I will do just that", Janet responded as the call ended. Janet has worked as Jessica's secretary for quite some years. The last time the company's board of directors tried to lay her off because of a mistake she did by letting a stranger into the company's premises after work hours, Jessica was the one who stood up for her at the disciplinary committee meeting.

At the top of her voice, she said: " I understand the risk she exposed us to, and I assure you she will face the consequence for that, but regardless of that, her contribution to this company's growth cannot be gainsaid, we are not letting her go please, thank you."

Since then, Janet has been so loyal to Jessica and her work ethic has been unequalled.

Jessica had just finished her workout and was heading back upstairs to her room to freshen up when she heard the doorbell ring. She wondered who it was because she wasn't expecting anybody, and it was too early as well. She waited and stood at the far corner of the staircase and peeped to see who it was before heading back to her room.

One of the maids hurriedly ran towards the door to see who it was as she shouted "Hold on I'm coming; who is there?"

Then she opened the door to see who it was. "Ehhee.. you're welcome sir," the maid grinned as she ushered Bob in. "Thank you," Bob responded without waiting for an answer. He walked straight to the stairs so confidently, as she spotted Jessica. "Called your line several times but it wasn't going! What the hell is wrong with your phone?!" Bob asked angrily. Bob was Jessica's boyfriend. He was very rich too, and he had investments in Macon City.

Bob and Jessica met on this Sunny Day in college; Jessica had gone to get something to munch on from the college's cafeteria as she was feeling very hungry. The cafeteria boy knew what she usually ordered. But, just when the cafeteria boy was about to give Jessica her favourite egg noodles and beef stroganoff. Bob asked for the same noodles, but there was none left.

Ceasing on this rather awkward moment, the server very judiciously and yet very charmingly told both of them that they could split the food in half so that they would be able to enjoy it together. Needless to say, both of them started to laugh at the wittiness of the server, and they indeed split the noodles between themselves, due to the suggestion of that young server.

After finishing the meal, Jessica wanted to pay the bills, but Bob insisted that he had rather paid the bills. And, from that point on, their great

friendship began.

Anyway, after meeting on that interesting afternoon, they have gone to places together, like enjoying movies together and going on vacations together. At a point in time, they even went to visit each other's grandparents' places almost every month. They had built a strong bond over the years.

"Oh, yes! I was about to return your call. I wasn't with my phone when you called," Jessica responded as they both walked up the stairs to the sitting room on the last floor.

"I've missed you so much. Not heard from you in the last few days, so I haven't been myself. That was why I spared some time to check on you. I'm off work today, so we could spend the whole time with ourselves. Although I have an appointment with someone within the next one hour." Bob said as he moved close to Jessica.

The rhythm of those words made Jessica feel loved. Some minutes ago when Bob walked in, he sounded harsh. But now, he appeared loving and caring. Jessica was used to his style; it wasn't new to her, and now she was carried away by his words, as he looked into her eyes.

Chapter 2 THE MAN IN THE ELEVATOR

"Awww...Are you serious?" Jessica asked as she smiled very broadly. "Of course yes. I'm here for you." Bob replied as he moved closer to Jessica. He held her on her waist with his two hands and looked into her eyes. "You're one of the best things that has ever happened to me." He was about to kiss her lips when he heard his phone ring.

"Hello," Bob answered the call and then listened carefully to the voice on the other end.

"So fast?... Okay then. I'll be there right away." Bob replied as he hung up the call.

It was his mechanic. His car had a minor fault and he had told the mechanic about it, and he had promised to come over to check Bob's car in an hour, but now, he called to tell him that he was free and would come over immediately. So Jack needed to leave Jessica's place.

"Jessy," as he fondly called Jessica. "I have to go now," Bob said, as he turned and walked towards the door without waiting for Jessica's response. He was used to acting this way. Since Jessica started a relationship with him, she knew him to be very proud and bossy though she always tried to ignore his attitude. She had made up her mind to ignore his negative side and focus on his positive side.

*******

It was a sunny Monday morning and Jessica had just finished having breakfast after having a brief virtual meeting with some of her clients from Germany. "Pack some for me in my lunch bag," Jessica said to one of the maids, as she munched on some loaves of bread, walking hurriedly towards the door to step out for work.

"Good morning Madam, you look great", James, Jessica's chauffeur), said to her as she approached the sparkling, tinted BMW SUV parked right in front of the eight-bedroom luxurious mansion. "Good morning James", Jessica responded.

She seemed unusually jagged as she threw herself in the back seat. As the car

engine revved back to life, she brought out her mini makeup kits from a purse she had laying on her lap and she began to tidy up her face. With a palm-sized mirror held up in her left hand and a powder brush in her right hand, she said to James, "You would have to speed up a little bit than usual, I am really behind time".

"Okay madam", he responded as he accelerated out of the compound.

"Can't they just hold on, I know I'm late. Gosh!! "She murmured abrasively to herself as she kept hanging up the calls that were coming in without responding

to them.

It has always been Jessica's desire to have a family of her own. There was a time she took more than a month's leave off work to focus on her life outside of work, and getting a man for herself with the hope of settling down and starting a family with him, which she did because she always had a way of getting what she wants. But unfortunately, her previous relationship broke up after two years as a result of Jessica's very busy work schedule and slap dashed attitude towards the relationship.

She loved him so dearly and always pleaded for more time from him, so she could sort things out work and build a structure that could make her enough time for herself and other

aspects of her life.

Her ex-boyfriend lived in a different city far away, which made the situation even worse. Because of the distance, Jessica wasn't able to see him frequently and anytime he came around to visit her, she was too busy to allocate enough time for him, so this affected their relationship and later led to a breakup.

Since then, Jessica had made up her mind to take her future relationship seriously. Six months after breakup with her ex-boyfriend, she met Bob. To sustain her current relationship, she always sacrificed her time and resources to be with Bob.

James slowly brought the car to a halt, and Jessica hopped out hastily. This made her

hair bounce gently on her shoulders as she jugged softly towards the entrance

of the company.

"Good morning madam! Good morning madam! You are welcome, madam!" Her staff greeted her as she walked into the Bay. She waved back to them stylishly in response. As she walked towards her office, Janet, her Secretary, greeted her as she handed her a cup of coffee and began to read out Jessica's schedules and appointments for the day.

Jessica nodded simultaneously and kept rolling her right index finger in circles as the information was read out to her. Her office was just a few feet from the Bay, and she always kept her door open. Jessica always tried to be open and level-headed with her workers. She related with them not as a boss but as a co-worker. She always made herself visible to her team and constantly showed them how she valued them.

She had a routine of charging her workers every morning before the day's work began, but she couldn't do that this morning because she was a bit late and didn't want to interrupt their activities. Her schedule for the day consisted largely of connecting and networking with other peer CEOs and industry leaders and to also make rounds to various departments, so it helped her to catch up with her team."What time is the board meeting?" Jessica asked Janet. "It's in five minutes' time boss" Janet responded. Jessica had a few calls to make, so she picked up her phone and dial the numbers of her managers in the other branches.

Across the room were some of Jessica's subordinates who stared towards Jessica's office in disgust as they whispered to each other. "Of all days, she decided to come

late on a Monday" one of them said. "What do you expect from someone who had everything handed to her without having to work hard for it," the other worker responded. "We better get back to our desks before she starts barking at us," one of them said as they all left for their cubicles.

Sitting across her desk, Janet told Jessica, "It's time for the meeting ma." "Alright thank you, Janet," Jessica responded. Jessica cleared up her desk and switched off the desktop computer placed on the left side of her desk. She stood up and adjusted her skirt and headed out of the office with Janet walking

closely behind her. As she walked back into the bay, heading towards the elevator, she smiled at Kent who approached her with his arms open to greet her with a hug.

"You look stunning as always," Kent told Jessica. "Thank you Kent," Jessica responded lovingly. Kent was the head of the sales department and technical department. He had worked in the company, way before Jessica was born.

He was a very good friend of Jessica's Dad before he died. After having a small chat about the project the company had going on, Jessica told Kent: "I have to run now; we'd set up a proper meeting later, okay?" "No problem Boss",

he responded with a witty voice. Janet was already standing in the elevator waiting for Jessica to join her.

As Jessica stepped into the elevator with her

fixed on her phone, the door began to shut. Suddenly as the elevator door was about to close completely, a hand stopped it and this tall, bearded, brown-skinned young man tried to squeeze himself into the elevator. "Sir, can you hold on please?" Janet said to him as she tried to prevent him from getting in. "Come on. Be kind Janet. Let him in," Jessica interjected. He smiled with a puzzled facial expression,

wondering why Janet wanted to prevent him from getting in.

As the elevator continued to ascend, Jessica couldn't get her eyes off this man who had just

joined them in the Elevator. He was, well, different from all others. He was handsome, not perhaps in the conventional sense, but he had that appearance that could make him stand out in the crowd. He was brown-skinned.

His unfathomable, brown eyes blended exceptionally with his face. His eyes were deep and expressive, and you could get lost if you stared long enough. His face had that faraway look in it, which cannot be described in words.

His smile, which reached up to his eyes and wrinkled them, flaunted his modesty and humility. Jessica found him somewhat irresistible.

Chapter 3 THE LOVE GIFT

Jessica could sense a hint of pain in his sparkling eyes, which seemed to disappear just as soon as it emerged. The man sometimes spoke too fast, which perhaps revealed how much agony he concealed within himself. Above all were his frame and stature.

He was not extremely muscular, with eight-pack abs, or biceps. However, he could stand out in a crowd, which was mostly due to his way of carrying himself. Perhaps he was not the kind who had girls swooning over him. But he was simple and innocent. He was perhaps, just one in a million, who was "nothing special, but all the same unique". Jessica was almost beginning to imagine herself on dates and the beautiful moments with this guy when the elevator bell brought her back to reality. She felt guilty about her thoughts when she remembered Bob, so she tried to take off her eyes from this man very quickly. She smiled and shook her head as she stepped out of the elevator. She looked back after a short while to steal another glance but the elevator door had closed and he was gone.

*******

It was the last day of work for the week and everyone in the office hurriedly tried to finish up any pending workload they had. The bay was crowded as everyone walked to and fro with files and papers in their hands trying to clear up one thing or the other to avoid spilling over

assignments till the next week. "Let's be quick in wrapping up guys; it's the weekend!" Jessica told her subordinates. Jessica had planned to go home after work to rest a little, and then head out later in the evening for a massage at her Aunt's Spa. Most times, Jessica always stayed back till everyone had left to review the day's work and correct whatever needed to be

corrected. She only left early on days when she had other appointments before the closing hour. Janet always tried to discourage her from having to stay back. "Madam you don't have to stay back. I will handle the review; you need to

go home and rest," Janet would always say. "I have nothing else to fall back to. This is my father's legacy and I must handle it with utmost care and diligence," Jessica would respond, confidently.

Jessica had noticed how tired Janet was, so she instructed her to leave when she noticed that she was yawning consistently. After a few hours of reviewing and clearing paperwork, Jessica decided to head home as she was very tired and worn out. She put off the lights and closed up. James was outside standing by the SUV. He held open the door as Jessica approached. He closed the door as she entered, and he walked briskly to the driver's door. Unknown to Jessica, Bob had been waiting for her, and he had plans for the night. As James pulled over through the gate into the compound, Jessica noticed Bob's car parked in front of the house. Most times, he told her if he would be coming around, but he didn't tell her he was coming this time.

Jessica managed to drag herself out of the car into the house and was expecting to see

Bob was in the sitting room, but he wasn't there. "Where is Bob?" she asked one of the maids. The maid looked around the sitting room and looked back at Jessica. "I saw him seat here when he came in some minutes ago." She said pointing her fingers towards one of the sofas. "Alright then, let me check upstairs," Jessica replied as she wriggled her body up the stairs.

While she had only walked just halfway up the stairs, she felt someone block her eyes with his hands. "Who is this?!" She screamed. The hands released her eyes, then she turned back to look at who it was. It was Bob. He held her by her waist and led her up the stairs. When they got to the entrance of Jessica's room upstairs, Bob turned to look at her, "I have a special gift for you love."

"Really?"

"Yes," Bob replied as he clasped two of his fingers. Within the twinkle of an eye, one of the maids rushed towards him, with a medium-sized bag that was beautifully decorated.

"Let us go in first., Bob said as he took Jessica by the wrists. Jessica opened the door as the both of them walked in.

While they were still standing in the room, Bob moved close to Jessica, held her waist, and looked into her eyes. "You're all that matters to me right now. And I get afford to lose you. I love you very much." Bob said as he handed over the bag to Jessica. Jessica collected it from Bob, took a glance into the bag and smiled. It was obvious that Bob spent so much money, just to make her happy.

She dropped the bag given to her and hugged Bob very passionately. Bob held her waist and kissed her on her lips. While they were still kissing, they had a knock on the door so they stopped to look in the direction of the door.

"Who's it?" Jessica asked.

"It's me, Madam." The voice replied. The voice sounded like that of one of the maids. Jessica walked towards the door to open it. "What is it Kayla?" Kayla was one of Jessica's personal maids. She was so loyal and smart, so Jessica preferred her to the other maids. She was the only one who had assess to Jessica's room and the only one who was allowed to run very crucial errands for her.

"Aunt Polina is here, and she asked to see you before leaving."

"Didn't you tell her that I have a visitor, or better still, that Bob is around?" Jessica asked. Polina knew Bob as Jessica's boyfriend, but she never liked him. She always told Jessica that she was yet to find a boyfriend. Polina was very sensitive and had studied Bob's attitude on their first meeting.

"I told her but she insisted on seeing you urgently, Kayla explained.
