"Dad, this ain't funny no more! I'm twenty-one soon to be twenty-two years old, you can't keep controlling me like a freaking teenager," yelled Jane, walking out of her dad's office. Jane's dad had invited her to his office to talk to her about the absurdity of her extravagance. She'd become so daring, the nerve to walk out on her dad.
"Come back here young lady, you don't walk out on me whilst I'm still talking," Edmund Peterson Sputtered with authority, rising from his seat. Jane nervously walks back towards her dad. Edmund is very strict but loves his daughter dearly. He walks towards her and tries to talk some sense into her.
"I have enemies everywhere, they can hurt you to get at me, now I'm not saying you can't have fun, but I need you to slow down a little," Edmund cautions her, holding her hand and looking straight into her eyes, to ensure his message sinks deep. Jane nods her head in guilt.
''I made a promise to your mom on her dying bed, to protect you, and that's what I've done and will keep doing until I die. You are very precious to me, so you must be meticulous, you hear?" Utters Edmund looking straight into her eyes.
"Yeah dad, sorry for walking out on you, that ain't gonna happen no more," Jane receptively replies, looking at her dad with sympathetic eyes.
"That's alright, and you have to stop this ghetto talk, Where did you even learn that from?" Edmund asks with a wry smile. Jane promises to stop talking ghetto,
"I won't speak it no more, sorry anymore." They both smile and hug each other.
Jane walks out of her dad's office. Her soft pleasant fragrance, designer dress, shoe and purse, and curly hair attract the attention of Edmund's employees, who can't help but tattle. While the female employees talk about her expensive attire and gait, the male employees talk about her irresistible beauty.
Jane walks out, right into her black Mercedes-AMG; which her dad had offered her when she celebrated her twenty-first birthday. Edmund is the head of a multimillion enterprise and getting her only daughter the latest cars and whatever she desires is not a problem for him.
Jane was born and raised in New shire, a city in South Carolina. She loves her city because of her childhood friends. The community has tried to keep the town green, by creating many parks, growing flowers, and keeping the forest at the city border neat. Tragically, no city is perfect; the crime wave in this small town is unexpectedly high.
This can be linked to a large number of Mafia groups in the city. Jane suspects her dad's involvement in some sort of Mafia, due to the suspicious phone calls she's heard her dad make. But can't dare ask Edmund about it.
Jane arrives home and is welcomed by Anna, (her nanny and head of their domestic staff). She takes her bag, jacket, and the shoes she just removed and accompanies her to her room.
"You're welcome back, dear, how did it go with your dad?" Anna asks Jane with so much concern. Anna is the oldest among Edmund's three domestic staff.
"Well, still the usual talk about me slowing down on my extravagance," Jane replies, putting on an unwary look.
''I think your father is right on this one, dear. Yesterday you came back drunk, what if one of these bad people out here hurts you?''
Anna has always been that mother figure in Jane's life since her mother died.
"Thanks, Anna, I think I've had enough scolding for today, I'm starving, what's there to eat," Jane asks heading for the kitchen, barefoot, with just her immaculate white tank top on and the trouser she wore to her dad's office.
"Jane dear, won't you take off the trouser?" Anna asks, rushing behind her with her slippers. As they get downstairs they're both surprised to meet Edmund, arranging files rushing.
"Dad, what are you doing here, it's only 11:30 am, did you forget something?" Jane asks with a surprised look.
"Yes darling, I forgot some vital documents, I need them for a meeting this evening with some investors."
Edmund replies trying to put these files together. She walks towards her dad and asks if he requires her help with anything, but Edmund asks her not to bother herself, as he'd had all the files sorted out.
"But there's one thing you can help me with," Edmund utters, looking at her with a serious, but smiley face.
"What's that dad?" Jane asks anxiously.
"Be a good girl," Edmund responds, sliding his thumb lightly on her cheeks. Jane smiles and reminds her dad of the promises she made earlier at the office.
Edmund picks up the file he'd come to collect and his car keys to leave. Gives
Jane a peck on her forehead and asks Anna to keep an eye on her. But as he walks out, Jane calls him, asking if he has a minute, she wants to ask for permission to attend the carnival in Rio de Janeiro Brazil with her friends.
This trip is essential to Jane, and she can't afford to miss it, she always gets the most fun on such trips.
''Can't this wait, dear? As you can see, I'm running late, and I still have a lot to put together before this meeting starts. Please let's talk when I get back ok?'' Edmund replies, showing eagerness to leave.
"But dad," Jane tries to explain but is curtailed by her dad,
"Jane please, I'm late," Jane puts on a displeased face, but Edmund just can't deal with that now.
He turns towards Anna, who'd been following their chats, and asks her not to wait up for him; ''I'll be home late, please take care of the house, lock up perfectly before going to bed.'' He cautions her, rushing towards his car.
Jane angrily sits on a chair in the dining, pondering how she'll make it to the carnival with her friends.
"I must attend the carnival, I can't afford to miss it, what do I do? What do I do?" Jane ponders to herself. As she ponders, she receives a text from one of her friends, Vanessa, popularly known as hotty, asking if she's parked.
"Not yet hotty, dad didn't give me the chance to ask for his permission, he was rushing to go to work," Jane replies but gets no reply from Van.
A few minutes later, the bell rings,
"Go get the door," Anna sends one of the maids. It's Vanessa, she's come to talk some sense into Jane. Vanessa is a spoiled brat and a bad influence on Jane.
"Your welcome mam," the maid greets Vanessa, rather she looks at her from hair to toe and snobs.
"Where is she?" Vanessa asks the maid, chewing her gum snobbishly.
"Jane? She should be in her room," the maid responds respectfully.
Vanessa goes to see Jane. Jane's happy she came but looks worried because their plan doesn't seem to go as scheduled.
"Hey, why are you putting on a long face?" Vanessa asks Jane, showing some concern. "It's dad, I promised him earlier I'll be good, but I want to go to Rio with you guys, can't afford to miss it, I..." Jane replies, but is discourteously cut short by Vanessa!
"You what? Jane come on, you're not a kid anymore, you need to start making your own decisions, you're above 18, the law says you can make decisions about your dame life" she speaks raising her hands out of frustration. Vanessa realizes Jane is adamant, she goes close to her and places her hand on her shoulder.
"Look, Jenny, Your dad has to wake up to the reality that we're in the 21st century, where dads can't control their grown-ups like teenagers" Vanessa utters,
"I think you're right hotty, dad has to know that I'm old enough to make my own decisions," Jane speaks up with hope.
"You know what?" Jane continues,
"Tell me" Van replies.
"The plan stands, we leave tonight, tell your boyfriend to pick us up by 9 00 pm" Jane responds seeming exhilarated
"Yey," Vanessa utters feeling thrilled.
"But what about Anna? Won't she try stopping you?" Vanessa asks curiously.
"By 8 30, they all will be in bed, and dad will be home late, so don't worry about that," Jane responds with a smile
Vanessa excitedly texts Olivia, one of the friends with whom they'd planned this trip, asking her to be at Jane's place with her boyfriend (Tyler) by 9 00 pm, so they take off. Vanessa calls her boyfriend (Greg) who is to drive them to Brazil. They'll rather drive, as they believe there's more fun in driving. All of Jane's friends have boyfriends but her, and they're all going to the carnival.
At night, whilst everyone else is in their rooms, Jane arranges pillows on her bed in the form of a person, to make it appear like she's in bed. As they park their stuff, Anna knocks at Jane's door, Jane hurriedly hides her box in the closet. "Come in" Jane calls. Anna has come to remind Jane of dinner,
"I'm not hungry Anna, don't worry about me, Go to bed ok, if I feel hungry, I know where the kitchen is," Jane replies with a smile, but with a little weirdness in her behaviour.
"Are you ok, dear?" Anna asks
"Yeah sure, I'm fine," Jane replies weirdly.
"You took a little longer than usual to ask me in," Anna utters.
"Oh, I was, I was, mmm on the phone," Jane dubiously responds.
"OK," Anna replies. Anna Figures out there's something fishy, but can't quite place her hands on it, so she decides to ignore her instincts. She wishes her good night and heads for her room. Vanessa sometimes spends the night with Jane, so she can't suspect they're up to something.
As she goes to her room, Jane opens the door to peep if she's gone. After confirming, Jane changes into her blue jeans and black top. Vanessa had asked her boyfriend to come along with her stuff.
A few minutes later, they receive a message from Greg, that they're waiting at the gate. He's there with Olivia and Tyler. Vanessa helps Jane to carry her valise, while Jane holds her purse in one hand and shoes in the other hand.
Jane and Vanessa tiptoe out of the house close the door gently as well as the gate and head for where Greg had told them he'll park. It was a little further from the gate, to ensure no one sees them.
As they get to the car, Greg, Olivia, and
Vanessa gets out to greet them both, they're all very excited about the carnival. Vanessa hugs and kisses Greg idyllically as she's filled with so much excitement.
"You guys can romance after, let's go, my dad might be back anytime," Jane mutters entering the car, followed by Olivia and Tyler. They sit in the back seat, reserving the passenger's side for Vanessa.
"Yo let's go," Vanessa screams as she enters the car, followed by Greg.
"Do we have everything?" Greg asks as soon as he enters. Vanessa immediately looks behind and smiles at Jane,
"Now we do," she replies.
They take off, all so excited. As they get further from Edmund's house, Greg plays The choice is yours by Black Sheep. They're all waiting for a particular part of that song to join in.
Tyler brings out the bottle of Jim Beam Bourbon he'd brought, with 5 tiny whiskey glasses.
"You're always so thoughtful bb, that's why I love you," Olivia tells Tyler, kissing him on the lip. Jane seems a little distracted, she's worried about her dad, she'd promised to be good. Tyler notices and pours her shot first.
As they all sip, the song gets to the part they've all been waiting for, Greg and Tyler start singing from "engine, engine number nine" whilst the girls pick up from
"back on the scene, crispy and clean." The track seems to have brightened Jane's mood, as she joins her friends in singing gaily.
Edmund gets home at about 2 00 am, he habitually checks up on everyone when he comes back from work late.
"Oh she's deep in sleep, let me not disturb her," In a soliloquy, Edmund mumbles, looking at the pillows Jane had perfectly arranged to appear like she's covered her head.
A few hours after arriving in the office the next day, Edmund receives a call from Anna complaining that Jane is nowhere to be found. "What are you talking about Anna? I saw her in her room last night sleeping soundly!" Edmund sputters.
Edmund cannot believe Jane has made a fool of him again.
"It appears she made a fool of us sir, she carefully arranged pillows, so it seems she's there," Anna shutters. Edmund drops the call and goes for a moment of silence, pondering on where he went wrong raising Jane.
He calls his friend, John Wright (Chief Of Police), to inform him about his daughter's disappearance.
"Ed, you know it's not been up to 24 hours since she left the house, so we can't declare her missing yet, but don't worry, I'll get to the bottom of this old friend."
John and Edmund have been friends since childhood. Edmund has assisted John a lot in his moments of great need, ad now seems like the time to return the favour.
"Thank you so much, John, this means a lot. Please do everything in your power to find her," Edmund utters.
"Don't worry, old friend, we'll do our best to find her," John replies.
Jane and her friends have just arrived in Brazil. Preparations for the carnival are ongoing. There's music and parades, everyone looks joyful and merry. The town looks beautiful and green. The palm trees and beach umbrellas on the sandy beaches make it even more beautiful.
Approaching the hotel, Greg notices a black Honda Accord, that seems to have been tailing them for a while.
"Could this car be following us?" Greg speaks to himself, looking at the car behind him from his side mirror.
"Is everything ok, babe? You've been staring at your side mirror for a while," Vanessa asks Greg curiously, noticing he is a little distracted.
"No, it's nothing babe," Greg replies. He's not quite certain the Honda is following them, so can't make a fuss.
Arriving at the hotel, they get two rooms, one for the boys and the other for the girls. They don't want Jane to feel lonelier than she probably already feels.
"Let's freshen up, eat and go get our costumes for the carnival," Jane utters excitedly pulling her valise upstairs.
Thirty-three-year-old Steve Archer, AKA Striker, Edmund's former employee, and present stunt enemy have been tailing Jane and her friends since they left New Shire. Steve and two of his boys get a few beautiful costumes for the carnival, they plan to use those to lure Jane and his friends to their car. He instructs his boys on what to do, should the plan be successful.
A few hours later, Jane and her friends go to the boy's room to invite them to shop.
"Sorry I'm so exhausted from the long drive, I need a nap before the party starts," Greg utters covering his sheets.
"Same here" Tyler adds, joining Greg.
The girls are a little disappointed, but they understand that they require rest, especially Greg, who's been driving for hours. As they step out, they're confronted by Steve, who's disguised as a gentleman selling costumes. "Hey, girls, a couple of carnival costumes here for you," Steve sputters, getting closer to the girls.
Jane and her friends seem excited to have seen costumes, without having to go far. But Jane seems a little more excited. She can't help but notice how dashing and attractive Steve is.
It's 4 00 pm, and they've been worried they might not be back in time to rest and prepare for the carnival that starts at 9 00 pm.
Whilst Vanessa and Olivia are busy scrutinizing the costumes Steve had, Jane is busy admiring Steve. Steve happens to have all the qualities Jane wants in a man. Tall, muscular, and very handsome. He has silver eyes curly hair and a deep but gentle voice.
Jane has been visualizing getting deflowered by a strong-looking man that has the same qualities as Steve and with six solid packs just like Steve's.
"I have more hot costumes at the shop, not far from here, you might want to come to see them," Steve sputters.
"Oh ok, no problem," Jane replies, giving Steve a seductive smile while biting her finger and acting diffident. Steve smiles back at Jane charmingly and goes ahead, hoping they follow.
"We can't, we don't even know this man," Olivia mutters, reprimanding Jane. "
Oh come on, Liv, you're always so paranoid, he's harmless," Jane replies, smiling and pulling Olivia's hand.
"What was that, Jenny?" Vanessa asks Jane with an all-judgy face and a faint smile.
"What was what?" Jane replies.
"Well I think you have a massive crush on the costume seller over there," Vanessa replies, pausing for a while.
"Come on hotty, don't be ridiculous, we just met this man, and you're already assuming things, please let's go," Jane answers, looking at Vanessa, but moving forward, making sure they don't lose track of Steve.
"Well, you're acting all weird," Vanessa mutters, following Jane and Olivia. Jane ignores Vanessa's Insinuations and keeps following Steve with a shallow smile.
As they get to the car, Steve's boys step out of the car, coming close to Jane.
"Aren't we close? The shop seems farther than you described," utters Vanessa, looking at Steve,
"Yeah," Olivia adds.
Before Jane and her friends can figure out they're with kidnappers, one of Steve's boys grabs Jane, closing her mouth and nose with a kerchief with a chemical sprayed on it that makes her pass out.
"Help, help, somebody, help us," Vanessa and Olivia scream at the top of their voices, rushing back to the hotel in panic.
Steve drives off with Jane and his boys at full speed.
