The Betrayed Heiress's Ruthless Fake Marriage

Author: Fei Teng
Genre: Romance
The world thought I was just a brainless party girl who lucked into an engagement with the wealthy Zane Sterling. But at my own engagement party, I personally directed the press and New York's elite to suite 2808. Inside, my fiancé was tearing off my "angelic" stepsister's pristine white dress. I kicked the door open and let the cameras flash. "Carra... my own sister... How could you?" I cried like a perfect, heartbroken victim, but my hands ruthlessly ripped her gown wide open, exposing her to the digital vultures. Zane was ruined, and my stepsister became a public laughingstock. But my furious father and stepmother immediately cut off my finances to punish me. To get rid of me, they forced me to marry Chace Henderson, the crippled, illegitimate son of a powerful rival family. They thought they were caging a ruined, second-hand bride. They thought I would just cry and accept my fate as a pawn, entirely at their mercy. What they didn't know was that I secretly control 35% of our family's empire, and I have my own private intelligence network. Even better, my new "paralyzed" husband is actually a ruthless mastermind who can walk perfectly fine. "Consider this a down payment on our alliance," I whispered, kissing him in a dim garage. They wanted a wedding to humiliate us. We are going to give them the disaster of the century.

Chapter 1

"To our future," Heidi Bolton said, her voice smooth as silk. She lifted a champagne flute, the crystal catching the ballroom's light.

Her carefully crafted smile was flawless.

Zane Sterling, her fiancé, was momentarily dazzled by her smile. He'd already had enough to make his head swim. But under Heidi's expectant gaze, his vanity won.

He took the glass. "To our future."

He downed it in one smooth motion. The guests surrounding them applauded politely.

Whispers followed Heidi like a shadow.

"Can you believe it? The Bolton girl actually went after a Sterling. I mean, look at Heidi, she could have done better, but why settle for a degenerate like Zane Sterling?"

"It's because of the money. She's basically selling herself. Her father must be getting a nice sum out of this engagement."

"Who asked her to be so unloved? She's been uncared for since her mother died. Her family doesn't care at all that she's become Zane Sterling's plaything."

Heidi heard it all. She felt nothing. Her focus was a laser point on Zane. She watched him swallow, the corner of her mouth ticking up. She plucked another identical flute from a passing waiter's tray but only took a delicate sip.

"I have a surprise for you upstairs," she whispered, her lips brushing his ear. The warmth of her breath was a lie. "Presidential suite. 2808. Give me ten minutes."

Zane's eyes lit up with a greedy fire. He squeezed her waist, his touch possessive and crude.

"I'll be there."

As he turned away, the smile on Heidi's face evaporated. It was replaced by a look of undisguised disgust. She placed her untouched champagne on a tray without a second glance.

Her eyes scanned the opulent ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria, a sea of black ties and designer gowns. They landed on her target.

Carra Bolton. Her stepsister.

Carra stood in a circle of fawning socialites, clad in a seemingly understated but unmistakably luxurious custom-made white gown. The dress made her look more like the star of today's engagement than Heidi.

Heidi glided toward her, the sequins on her fire-red minidress shimmering like scales.

"Thank you," Heidi said, ignoring the jab. "To be honest, Carra, I've always envied you. Zane always tells me to learn from you."

A smug smile tugged at Carra's lips.

The fish was taking the bait. Heidi continued, her tone unhurried. "He booked suite 2208 upstairs. He mentioned something about a family heirloom."

"An heirloom?" Carra's brow furrowed slightly, but her eyes had already begun to shift-from wariness to a poorly concealed, greedy curiosity.

"Yes." Heidi sighed, playing the part of a heartbroken fiancée. "Passed down for generations. Supposedly priceless. But he doesn't seem keen on giving it to me. He said if I could learn to be as gentle and virtuous as you, maybe he'd hand it over tonight."

Carra's breathing turned uneven. This was an opportunity. Zane might not be much, but if she could play her cards right and walk away with top-tier jewelry, it would be worth it. Heidi had no skill-even engaged, she couldn't secure the heirloom. That left the door wide open for Carra. She bit her lip, then turned and slipped through a side door, heading for the corridor that led to the elevators.

Heidi watched her go, her green eyes cold as ice.

In a dimly lit corner of the grand ballroom, Chace Henderson saw everything. From his wheelchair, he had a perfect vantage point. He watched Heidi offer the champagne. He watched her whisper in Zane's ear, then in Carra's. A flicker of pure appreciation curved his lips.

This woman, the one the world had dismissed as a brainless "It Girl," was far more interesting than anyone knew.

Heidi checked her watch. Carra was on her way up. Phase one was complete.

She began to move through the crowd, her path deliberate. Her next target was Carra's mother, her stepmother, Jimmie Webster.

"Jimmie, I'm so worried," Heidi said, her voice loud enough for the surrounding matrons to hear. "Zane has been ignoring me all night. He's had so much to drink." She was laying the foundation for her own alibi.

Ten minutes passed.

Heidi's expression shifted from pouty complaint to genuine "concern."

"I'm going to go check on him," she announced to Jimmie. "I'm worried."

She grabbed the arms of a few of the more notorious gossips nearby. "Will you come with me? I'm scared to go alone."

They were thrilled at the prospect of drama.

The group moved like a hunting party toward the elevators. Heidi led the way, her face a mask of anxiety, her heart a block of ice.

They arrived at suite 2808. The door was slightly ajar.

From inside, they could hear the sounds of a struggle. A man's grunts, and a woman's panicked, muffled cries.

"No... Zane... It's me, Carra! Not Heidi!"

The women with Heidi gasped, their hands flying to their mouths.

Heidi looked as if she'd been struck by lightning. Her body swayed. Then, with a surge of adrenaline, she kicked the door wide open.

The scene inside was ugly. Zane, his eyes glazed over from the drug and alcohol, was tearing at Carra's dress. Her face was a mess of tears and terror.

"Zane Sterling!" Heidi screamed, a raw, primal sound that ripped through the air.

The shriek cut through Zane's drugged haze. He looked up, his vision blurring. He saw Heidi. Behind her, a crowd of shocked faces, their phones already out.

The flash of a camera was like a gunshot in the silent room.

Downstairs, in the ballroom, Chace Henderson's phone vibrated. A push notification from Page Six.

BREAKING: Bolton-Sterling Engagement Implodes. Groom-to-be Caught with Bride's Sister in Hotel Suite.

Chace switched off the screen. He looked out at the New York skyline, a universe of glittering lights. For the first time in a very long time, a woman had genuinely captured his interest.

He picked up his phone and sent a text to his assistant.

Find out everything there is to know about Heidi Bolton.

Chapter 2

Upstairs in the presidential suite, Heidi looked at the disheveled pair with a heartbroken expression. She turned her pained gaze to her weeping stepsister.

"Carra... my own sister..." Heidi's voice trembled, each word a carefully crafted note in her symphony of betrayal. "How could you? With my fiancé?"

Shame and fear choked Carra. "No, sister, it wasn't like that," she sobbed, shaking her head. "He... he thought I was you..."

"He thought you were me?" A bitter, cold laugh escaped Heidi's lips.

She pretended to stagger from overwhelming grief and "accidentally" grabbed Carra's expensive white designer gown. The dress, already damaged and precarious from Zane's earlier assault, slipped completely, exposing Carra's flimsy lace bra.

Carra shrieked, her hands flying to cover her chest, but it was too late.

The camera flashes were relentless now, a strobe of digital vultures capturing her utter humiliation.

Having delivered the killing blow, Heidi turned her attention on Zane. The feigned sorrow in her eyes vanished, replaced by a look of pure, distilled hatred. "You animal, Zane Sterling!"

The hallway outside the suite was now packed with guests drawn by the commotion, a morbid audience hungry for scandal.

Zane's world was crumbling. His career, his reputation-all of it, gone. He shoved past Heidi, scrambling for his jacket on the floor, his only thought to escape.

He fled, half-naked and disgraced, pursued by a gauntlet of raised cell phones.

The room fell silent except for the sound of Carra's hysterical sobs. She was a ruin of white silk and exposed skin, with Heidi standing over her like a vengeful goddess.

A quiet vibration came from the phone in Heidi's pocket. A message from her hired PR team.

Photos received. All channels synchronized. Trending 1 in three minutes.

Heidi slipped the phone away. The mask of heartbreak slammed back into place. She rushed to Carra's side, pulling off her own jacket and draping it over her stepsister's trembling shoulders.

"My poor, foolish sister," she cried, holding her. "How could you be so stupid!"

To the onlookers, it was a breathtaking act of grace. A woman, betrayed by both her fiancé and her sister, choosing to protect her family's honor. It was a performance that would earn her a mountain of sympathy.

Downstairs, the party had devolved into a cacophony of excited gossip.

Chace Henderson was no longer in his corner. His assistant, Sean Foster, stood beside his wheelchair, his voice low.

"Sir, as you instructed, our people 'accidentally' directed the press to the 28th floor."

"Good," Chace said, his eyes on a photo of Heidi's "grief-stricken" face that was already circulating. "This woman is even more ruthless than I thought."

Finally, the hosts of the disaster arrived upstairs. Heidi's father, Arthur Bolton, and her stepmother, Jimmie Webster.

Jimmie shrieked at the sight of her daughter's state and rushed to embrace her. Arthur, his face purple with rage, bellowed at the crowd. "Stop filming! Security! Where is security!"

The floor was chaos.

In the eye of the storm, Heidi remained unnaturally calm. She helped a "grieving" Jimmie to her feet. "Jimmie, the most important thing now is to get Carra out of here."

Escorted by security, Jimmie and Arthur hustled a near-catatonic Carra through a service exit. Heidi followed, tears streaking her makeup just so.

The party was over.

As Chace's wheelchair glided toward the elevator, he spoke to Sean. "Tell Carleigh I'm not feeling well. I've gone home."

The elevator doors closed. The image of Heidi's flawless performance just now was burned into his mind. He found himself anticipating her next move.

That night, the Bolton-Sterling engagement scandal dominated every gossip site and social media platform. Zane Sterling's family business saw its stock price plummet in after-hours trading.

The narrative was perfectly shaped. Zane was a monster who drugged and assaulted his fiancée's innocent sister. Carra was a tragic victim. And Heidi was the noble, heartbroken heroine.

Zane was placed under house arrest by his own family. Carra, thanks to the widely circulated photos of her in her underwear, became a laughingstock.

Back at the Bolton villa, Heidi locked her bedroom door. She walked to the mirror and looked at her tear-stained reflection.

Slowly, a cold, deeply satisfied smile spread across her face.

She opened her laptop. On the screen was an encrypted file titled "Henderson Global Equity Structure Analysis."

Her revenge was just beginning.

Her phone rang. An unknown number. She answered.

A low, magnetic male voice came through the line. "Heidi Bolton? This is Chace Henderson. I think we should talk."

Chapter 3

Heidi's body went rigid at the name. Chace Henderson.

She walked to the window, looking down at the reporters' vans still lingering outside the gates of the Bolton estate, vultures waiting for a fresh kill.

"Mr. Henderson," she said, her voice cool and measured. "I don't think we have anything to talk about."

"Oh, I think we do." Chace's voice held a hint of amusement. "We have a perfect escape plan to discuss. And a much more interesting proposal for an alliance."

Heidi was silent. He had seen her. In the ballroom. He knew. This man was far more than the "disabled heir" persona he projected.

"Tomorrow. Ten a. m. Union Square underground garage, Section G," Chace said, giving her no room to refuse. He hung up.

The next morning, the Bolton living room was a tomb. On the television, a haggard-looking Zane Sterling was giving a press conference, claiming the night's events were a "terrible misunderstanding." He insisted he'd been drugged and had mistaken Carra for Heidi.

Heidi descended the stairs, a coffee mug in her hand. She watched Zane's pathetic performance with a smirk. Jimmie was watching her, her eyes narrowed.

"Well, if it was a misunderstanding, I suppose that's that," Heidi said with a flippant shrug.

Her father, Arthur Bolton, slammed his newspaper down on the coffee table. "That's that?" he roared, his face flushed with fury. "The whole world is laughing at the Bolton name!"

"The person they're laughing at isn't me," Heidi replied, her voice like ice. "It's the man who can't control his zipper, and your 'well-behaved' daughter."

Arthur was speechless. Just then, the phone rang. It was the Sterling family, formally breaking the engagement. Arthur, defeated, announced into the receiver that for Heidi's "protection," the engagement was off. He hung up and turned to Heidi, snarling, "Do you know what an excellent match you've just lost!" Heidi gave a cold laugh. If he were truly that excellent, they would have shoved him onto Carra instead. She couldn't be bothered to argue. She simply raised her coffee mug to him in a mock toast. He trembled with rage.

She drove away from the house, but not toward Union Square. She took a detour to an old warehouse district in Brooklyn. From a nondescript storage locker, she retrieved a laptop and a binder of documents-the true core files of Bolton Holdings, left to her by her mother. Her real ammunition.

She changed out of her designer clothes into a simple t-shirt and jeans, removing every piece of expensive jewelry. She got behind the wheel of a beat-up, anonymous Ford and drove to the meeting.

She arrived at the underground garage fifteen minutes late.

In the far, dim corner of Section G, Chace Henderson sat alone in his wheelchair, his back to her. He was staring at the damp, stained concrete wall. He wore a simple white linen shirt, the poor lighting making his sharp, handsome features seem almost ethereal.

"You're late," he said, without turning.

"Traffic," Heidi lied, walking to stand in front of him. "What's this alliance plan?"

Chace finally looked up, his deep blue eyes appraising her. "It's simple. Your family is forcing you into a marriage. My family is doing the same to me. I propose we form an alliance. Help each other."

A sudden, violent engine roar interrupted him. A rusty pickup truck screeched to a halt nearby. Three greasy-looking men got out. The leader was a mountain of a man with a brutal face.

"Mr. Henderson," the man, Rick Tucker, said with a nasty grin, cracking his knuckles. "The boss lady sent us to 'escort' you home."

Chace's expression hardened. His bodyguard, Sean, was on another assignment. This was a classic move by his stepmother, Carleigh-a petty, humiliating show of force.

Just as Rick's meaty hand reached for Chace's wheelchair, Heidi moved.

She stepped between them.

"Get out of the way, little girl, this ain't your business," Rick snarled, reaching to shove her aside.

Heidi didn't move back. As his hand came toward her, she pivoted, her body a blur of motion. Her elbow struck Rick under the ribs at a sharp, precise angle.

A choked grunt escaped him. Pain contorted his face as he stumbled back. His two cronies stared, dumbfounded. They hadn't expected this slender woman to pack such a punch.

Heidi didn't press the attack. Instead, she pulled out her phone, snapped a quick photo of Rick's face, and her fingers flew across the screen. A pre-installed facial recognition app linked to a private database returned a result in seconds.

She looked up, her voice devoid of heat. "Rick Tucker. Two priors for assault and tax evasion. Currently on parole. Do you want me to let your parole officer know you're here harassing a disabled man?"

Chace's eyes widened. His file on her said she was a Yale art history major who partied too much. It said nothing about Krav Maga or private intelligence networks.

Rick's face went pale. He didn't know who this woman was, but she knew his name and his record. That made him feel a real threat.

"Get your men and disappear," Heidi said, her voice carrying the weight of absolute authority. "Or this photo and a 911 call go out in the next five seconds."

Rick Tucker weighed his options. He shot her a hateful glare, then scrambled back into his truck with his men. The truck sped off, its tires squealing in retreat.

The garage was silent again.

Heidi put her phone away and turned to the man in the wheelchair. Chace was watching her, his usual composure completely gone, replaced by sheer, unadulterated shock.

She leaned down, her face inches from his. Looking at his stunning blue eyes and the pulse hammering in his throat, she gave him a radiant smile.
