The Bet That Broke The Hayes

Author: : Jun Shangye
Genre: Billionaires
My step-sister Brittany's graduation party quickly devolved into a public mockery of me. My step-family and ex-boyfriend Jason relentlessly called me "slow" and "worthless." The scar on my cheek, a constant reminder of Jason's past negligence, tightened with each cruel word. My stepfather, Richard, then initiated a colossal public bet, wagering $100,000 I wouldn't get into *any* state college. My stepbrother Kyle bet his Mustang GT on my SAT score being below a thousand, and Jason openly wagered valuable retail spots for Brittany's assured triumph. They eagerly anticipated my utter public embarrassment over college acceptances and test scores. When I calmly wrote "0" on my estimated SAT sheet, the garden erupted in a deafening, cruel laughter. Jason, feigning disgust, publicly dumped me and added a family heirloom to the mounting betting pile. My step-family gleefully contributed their vacation condo and company shares, convinced of my impending ruin. Then, the official College Board site displayed "SAT Score: 0," unleashing a final, vicious torrent of triumph and online ridicule. My heart felt like cold stone, yet my face remained impassive as I watched their unveiled greed and contempt. They believed my humiliation was complete, oblivious to the technicality behind that "zero" score and the true story of my scar. This public spectacle, designed to destroy me, only hardened my resolve. However, just as my stepfather's rage peaked, three black sedans arrived, and my formidable grandmother, Eleanor Miller, stepped out. Flanked by admissions deans from Harvard, Stanford, and MIT, she calmly announced my actual, flawless SAT score: a perfect 2400. They further revealed me as a National Merit Scholar and the sole heir to the multi-billion dollar Miller Industries. With their signed betting agreement, the Hayes family's world was about to spectacularly unravel.

My step-family and ex-boyfriend Jason relentlessly called me "slow" and "worthless."

The scar on my cheek, a constant reminder of Jason's past negligence, tightened with each cruel word.

Chapter 1

The music was too loud at the Hayes' graduation party.

It was supposed to be for me, Amelia Miller, and my stepsister, Brittany Hayes.

But everyone knew it was really Brittany's party.

My stepfather, Richard Hayes, clapped a hand on Brittany's shoulder, his smile wide.

"To Brittany, future superstar!"

Guests cheered. My mother, Carol, beamed beside him.

I stood near the patio door, the scar on my cheek feeling tight.

They always underestimated me, my step-family.

Called me slow, quiet, destined for nothing much.

They didn't know I studied in secret, that my mind was sharp.

Richard caught my eye and his smile faded a little.

"And Amy, well, we hope she finds something to do."

A few polite, pitying claps.

Kyle, my stepbrother, snorted. "Maybe a two-year course in basket weaving."

Laughter followed.

Richard then raised his voice, "Alright, folks, time for the main event, college acceptances and SAT scores are due any minute!"

He winked at a group of his friends. "I've got a bet going, a hundred thousand dollars says Amy doesn't even get into a state college."

His friends chuckled, pulling out wallets.

"She won't make it past community college, if that," one of them said.

Kyle swaggered forward. "My Mustang GT says her SAT score is below a thousand."

Jason Carter, my ex-boyfriend, was there too, draped all over Brittany.

He smirked at me. "I'll put up a couple of my dad's prime retail spots downtown. Brittany for the win, obviously."

Brittany giggled, then looked at me with fake sweetness.

"Oh, Amy, don't feel bad. Not everyone is cut out for higher education. You're just a bit... slow."

I offered a small, calm smile.

"Standardized tests aren't really my thing."

They all nodded, smug.

"But," I continued, my voice even, "breaking the state's top score record shouldn't be an issue."

Chapter 2

A wave of disbelief, then loud derision, swept through the guests.

Richard's face turned red. "Don't be ridiculous, Amelia!"

My mother, Carol, shook her head, her expression pained. "Amy, darling, you're being delusional."

"If she gets any acceptance, it's because Eleanor pulled strings," Richard scoffed, referring to my paternal grandmother, Eleanor Miller.

Brittany clapped her hands, a malicious glint in her eyes.

"I have an idea! Let's do an SAT score estimation game!"

She produced some practice score sheets. "We can all write down what we 'think' we'll get. It'll be fun!"

Her eyes dared me.

The guests loved the idea, eager for more drama.

I took a sheet.

Quietly, I filled in "0" for my estimated score in each section.

Brittany, with a flourish, wrote down numbers that were near perfect. She held it up for everyone to see.

"See? Confidence!" she announced.

The betting got louder, more frenzied.

Richard threw his car keys onto a growing pile on the garden table. "Our vacation condo in Aspen! Amy won't get a single acceptance!"

Carol added a thick diamond bracelet. "All in on Brittany!"

Jason, egged on by Brittany, pulled out a share certificate. "Shares from my trust fund! Brittany will sweep the board."

My heart felt like a cold stone, but my face remained calm.

I watched them, watched their greed and their disdain.

This was who they were.

I picked up a pen and a party napkin.

"Since there are so many bets," I said, my voice carrying surprisingly well, "perhaps we should write them down."

I began to list each bet, each item, each name.

A partygoer, some friend of Kyle's, started a livestream on his phone.

"This is epic! The Hayes family smackdown!" he yelled.

Online comments started popping up on a nearby tablet, visible to everyone.

They were brutal.

*"That scarred girl is crazy."*

*"Zero? Is she for real?"*

*"Go Brittany! Put her in her place!"*

I felt a final, thin thread connecting me to this family snap.

It was freeing.
