The winding road that led to the pack's territory seemed endless. Lyra sat in the back of a weathered taxi, watching the scenery pass by through the window. The dense forests, the familiar hills... Everything reminded her of the childhood she had left behind, a mixture of sweet and bitter memories. But today, she was no longer the carefree young girl who had left this territory. Five years had passed, and yet a part of her wondered if anything here had changed.
The car stopped abruptly in front of the imposing arch marking the entrance to the territory. The driver, a human of few words, gave him a cautious look before placing his suitcase on the ground. Lyra quickly thanked him, leaving a few crumpled bills in his hand. As soon as he disappeared, she felt the weight of the stares. The sentries stationed at the entrance stared at her with palpable intensity.
"Lyra Blackwood," one of them whispered, a hesitant smile tugging at his lips. "Welcome home. »
These words caused a strange shiver in her. At your place. Was this always the case? She just nodded, all too aware of the anxiety building within her.
As she crossed the boundaries of the territory, the sound of voices and laughter reached her. His family was waiting for him. Her adoptive mother, Rosalie, was the first to run to her, pulling her into a hug so tight that Lyra felt her breath fail.
"My god, darling, you're finally here! » cried Rosalie, her eyes shining with tears. "We missed you so much. »
Lyra returned the hug, but her gaze was already wandering beyond the small group. His younger brother, Liam, stood a little behind, a shy smile on his face. But someone was missing. Or rather something.
The territory seemed... different. The air was thick with a tension she couldn't define. The smiles seemed less bright, the looks more cautious. Before she could ask the question that was burning on her lips, a deep voice broke the moment.
"Lyra Blackwood. »
She turned around abruptly, her heart stopping for a moment as she saw the man standing a few meters away from her. Tall, imposing, his aura dominated everything around him. Kael Stormborn.
She had seen him from a distance before, when he was just a Beta, but today he seemed transformed. His steel gray eyes stared at her with an unsettling intensity, and the thin scar that marked his jaw added to his fearsome appearance.
"You are expected at the pack meeting, immediately," he said in a cold, sharp voice.
Rosalie, shocked by the interruption, tried to protest. "Kael, she just arrived, at least let her..."
"This is an important decision, Rosalie," he cut in without looking away from Lyra. "She must be there. »
Lyra felt her stomach drop. This welcome was certainly not what she had imagined. But Kael's tone allowed no discussion.
"Very well," she finally whispered, briefly squeezing Rosalie's hand before following Kael.
The path to the main building was silent, Kael walking ahead of her with firm steps, as if he were carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Lyra tried not to pay attention to the curious looks of the members of the pack they passed.
As they entered the large meeting room, a wave of murmurs arose. The elders were all present, their piercing gazes analyzing Lyra's every move. She felt like an outsider under their judgment, an intruder who shouldn't have been there.
Kael walked to the center of the room and turned to face her. "First of all, I want to be clear about one thing, Lyra," he stated, his voice echoing in the room. "Your return here is not trivial. Much has changed since you left, and your role in this pack will now be crucial. »
Lyra frowned, confused by his words. "My role? she asked, her voice shaking slightly.
One of the elders, a man with a face marked by time, spoke. "Lyra, as the daughter of Magnus Blackwood, you carry a legacy. A legacy that this pack cannot ignore. »
Her father's name rang through her like a clap of thunder. Magnus Blackwood. A name she had tried to forget.
Kael let a heavy silence settle in before continuing. "We will discuss all this in more detail tomorrow. For now, consider your return a second chance to prove your worth. »
The words hit her like a slap. A second chance? Was that really how they saw her, as someone who still had to prove she belonged here?
As she was about to respond, Kael suddenly looked away and addressed the others. "The meeting is over. »
Without another word, he left the room, leaving Lyra alone amidst inquisitive looks.
She felt a gentle hand placed on her shoulder. It was Rosalie, who gave him a reassuring smile. "Don't let Kael trouble you, my dear. He's...difficult, but he has a good heart, deep down. »
Lyra nodded, but deep inside her, a feeling of anger and frustration bubbled. Why did she feel like an invisible trap was slowly closing around her?
Later that evening, as she stood on the balcony of her family's home, watching the moon light up the forest, she felt a presence behind her.
"I haven't seen you smile once since you arrived," a familiar voice whispered.
She turned around to find Liam, her younger brother, with his hands in his pockets.
"It's hard to smile when you feel like an intruder," she replied with a sad smile.
Liam came closer, putting a comforting arm around her shoulders. "You are not an intruder, Lyra. Not for me. Not for mom. »
She gave him a grateful look, but the weight of the day's events was still too heavy for her to feel calm.
"What's changed here, Liam? » she finally asked.
He hesitated, as if searching for the right words. " All. Since Kael became Alpha, things haven't been the same. He made some necessary changes, but... some people don't like him. Others fear him. »
Lyra felt her heart tighten. What role was she supposed to play in all this? Why did Kael seem so insistent about being here?
As the night wore on, only one question occupied her mind: what secrets were hidden behind this return, and above all, behind this Alpha with the steely gaze who seemed to pierce her at every moment?
She didn't know it yet, but this return would be the start of a journey that would change her life forever.
The murmur of voices echoed in the large meeting room, a dull tension hanging in the air. Lyra was sitting at one of the wooden benches, her fingers clenched on the edge of the table. Despite the lively atmosphere, she felt alone. The furtive glances of the members of the pack often converged on her, curious or suspicious. Yet it was Kael who monopolized his attention, standing in the center of the room, imposing and calm, as if he controlled every breath in the room.
"Homeland security is our top priority," he declared in a firm voice. "Recent incidents at our borders leave no room for error. From now on, new rules will be put in place. Any unauthorized exit must be reported at least twenty-four hours in advance. Patrols will be doubled, and any suspicious behavior must be reported immediately. »
A heavy silence followed his words, before a man in his thirties, with dark hair and a tight jaw, spoke.
"With all due respect, Alpha, these rules will stifle our freedoms," he said defiantly.
Kael slowly looked back at the man, his gray eyes sparkling with an icy glow. "These rules are not an option, Malcolm. They are necessary to protect our lands, our families. If this seems oppressive to you, perhaps you should consider what you are willing to sacrifice for the safety of your pack. »
Malcolm sat back, seething with frustration, but he didn't reply. Lyra felt a shiver run through her. Kael had a way of speaking that left no doubt about his authority. However, his cold tone and detachment caused discomfort among some members.
As she observed the scene, a door suddenly opened, attracting everyone's attention. A man entered, a bright smile on his face. Lyra felt her breath catch as she recognized him. Elias.
He seemed to have changed since the last time she saw him, but his aura remained the same. Charming, confident, and surrounded by an almost magnetic energy. He looked around the room before settling his eyes on her.
"Lyra," he said with a smile, as if they had parted yesterday. "It's good to see you again. »
She didn't know what to answer, taken by surprise by his unexpected arrival. Elias walked over, ignoring the questioning looks from the other members, and sat down next to her.
"It's been a long time," he whispered, low enough that only the two of them could hear.
"Yes," she replied, her voice barely audible.
Their exchange was interrupted by Kael, whose dark gaze fixed Elias with an almost palpable intensity. "You're late, Elias," he said coldly.
Elias shrugged, his smile never wavering. "As always, right? »
Kael didn't answer, but Lyra felt the tension between them increase. She wondered what could have happened between these two men to make them look at each other like that, like two adversaries ready to fight.
The meeting continued, but Lyra had difficulty concentrating. Elias' presence at her side disturbed her, but it was Kael who worried her the most. Every time she looked up at him, she felt a strange energy emanating from him. An invisible warmth that seemed to attract her attention despite herself.
When the meeting ended, Lyra quickly got up, hoping to escape the stifling atmosphere. But Elias caught her before she could get out.
"You look tense," he said, stepping in front of her.
"Maybe it's because it's all...a lot," she answered honestly.
Elias tilted his head slightly, observing her with a mixture of curiosity and tenderness. "You don't have to face everything alone, you know. If you ever need to talk, I'm here. »
Before she could respond, a deep voice sounded behind them.
"Elias, I think Lyra needs rest, not idle conversation. »
Kael stood a few feet away, his arms crossed over his chest, his gaze fixed on Elias.
Elias smiled slightly, but there was a glimmer of challenge in his eyes. "Of course, Alpha. I didn't want to disturb her. »
He walked away, giving Lyra one last look before disappearing into the crowd.
Kael approached her, his expression unreadable. " Everything is fine ? » he finally asked.
Lyra hesitated, not knowing how to respond. " Yes I'm dong well. »
He nodded, but there was something in his eyes that made her uncomfortable. As if he was trying to read beyond his words.
"If you ever have any questions about what's going on here, come see me. I want to make sure you understand everything that's at stake."
She nodded, but her heart was beating faster than she wanted. There was an intensity in her voice, a seriousness that suggested this situation was much more complicated than she had imagined.
That night, while lying in her room, Lyra couldn't help but think about the events of the day. Kael, Elias, the tension in the pack... Everything seemed interconnected, but she couldn't yet understand how.
As she closed her eyes, a lingering image remained etched in her mind: that of Kael's eyes, piercing and unfathomable, as if hiding secrets she was not yet ready to discover.
The first light of day peeked through the curtains of Lyra's room, bathing the room in a soft, golden light. Yet, a shadow weighed on his mind, refusing to give him a moment of peace. Since his return, everything seemed strange, as if something invisible was weighing on the walls of the pack. The furtive glances, the whispered conversations, and above all, the heavy silences of Kael. Something was happening, something that was being hidden from him.
She sat up, bringing her knees to her chest, trying to organize her thoughts. The sound of footsteps in the hallway caught her attention, and a low voice that she immediately recognized made her ears prick up. Kael was speaking with one of the pack members. She stood up discreetly, approaching the half-open door.
"...another missing person," the man whispered.
" Who ? » Kael asked, his tone cold and sharp.
"Simon. He hasn't been seen since last night. The patrols say he hasn't left the territory, but..."
"But what? »
The man hesitated before answering, as if he feared the Alpha's reaction. "We found traces of a struggle near the river. And... blood. »
Lyra felt her heart stop for a split second. Blood? She backed away slowly, closing the door before one of them surprised her. A dull worry rose within her. Simon was a young man full of life, always smiling. She had seen him when he arrived, laughing with other members. And now he was missing?
She turned away from the door, her thoughts swirling. Why hadn't anyone told him about these disappearances? Was this the reason for the new rules imposed by Kael? Part of her wanted to ask him for an explanation, but her instinct told her he wouldn't answer. Not completely, at least.
Looking for a way to occupy her mind, she decided to clean her room. While moving an old trunk into a corner, she noticed something protruding from a secret compartment. A leather-bound notebook, worn by time. His hands shook slightly as he retrieved it. As she opened it, familiar writing hit her full force.
It was his mother's diary.
Breathless, she sat on the bed, quickly leafing through the first pages. Memories flooded in, mixed with pain and nostalgia. His mother had always been a figure of gentleness and mystery. Lyra had often wondered why she seemed to carry an invisible weight, a sadness she never shared.
One sentence caught his attention: *"Lyra must know the truth one day. She is special. Different. A part of her belongs to another pack, a pack that time has almost erased. »*
The words danced before his eyes. Another pack? His mother never talked about it. She flipped the pages frantically, looking for other clues.
*"Perhaps they will come for her. I can't let them take her. »*
Lyra felt her heart racing. Who were these "they"? And why was her mother afraid they would come for her?
She abruptly closed the newspaper, unable to read further at the moment. The revelations it contained were too heavy, too complex to be digested in one go. She placed the notebook on her bedside table, staring at an invisible point in front of her.
A sharp knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts.
"Come in," she said, her voice shaking slightly.
Kael appeared in the doorway, his piercing gaze immediately scanning her.
"I noticed you were absent at breakfast," he said, his tone calmer than she expected.
"I wasn't very hungry," she replied, avoiding meeting his eyes.
He entered the room, closing the door behind him. His imposing presence seemed to fill the space.
"Lyra," he said after a moment of silence. "I know this must all seem strange to you. But there are things you don't understand yet. And dangers you cannot ignore. »
She looked up at him, trying to read his intentions. "What dangers? The disappearances? Why didn't anyone tell me about this? »
He clenched his jaw slightly, as if hesitant to answer. "Because we don't want to create panic. But yes, several members of the pack have disappeared in recent weeks. And I fear this is only the beginning. »
A shiver ran down his spine. "Why tell me all this now? »
Kael approached, his gaze hardening. "Because you are in danger, Lyra. I don't know why yet, but I have reason to believe you could be a target. »
She felt anger rising within her, a mixture of fear and frustration. "A target for what? For whom? Kael, you can't ask me to stay here without explaining to me what's really going on! »
He stared at her intently, and for the first time, she saw a glint of hesitation in his eyes. "There are things I can't tell you right now. But promise me one thing: don't leave the territory. No matter what happens. »
She wanted to protest, to demand answers, but something in his tone, in the seriousness of his words, silenced her.
"Okay," she finally whispered, although part of her knew she wouldn't keep that promise if circumstances forced her to.
Kael nodded, satisfied with her answer, then left the room, leaving her alone with her thoughts.
She stood up, returning to her mother's journal. If Kael didn't want to give her answers, then she would find them herself. But as she opened the notebook again, a question entered her mind: what if this was all connected to her, to her past, to that forgotten pack her mother had spoken of?
The words echoed in her mind, accompanied by a fear she couldn't ignore: *Maybe they will come for her.*
A certainty was born within her. Whatever secret her mother had been trying to protect was about to come to the surface.
