Three years had passed since my mother had left me alone in the quite town of Silverwood. Every year I had secretly prayed to the moon goddess for her return. But this year I was turning eighteen, I was much wiser now to understand she wasn't coming back for me.
Running through the forest has always had an effect on my body I couldn't just explain how it made me feel. Free! was the closest words I can think of.
I can feel it in the air, the fresh smell of forest had a way of relaxing every muscles in her body, memories of I and my mother running through the woods laughing and playing were still in my head. I stopped running and my claws start to abruptly dig into the soil beneath, I was drawing the strange pattern I can't seem to remember where I had seen it again.
I looked at the strange pattern again, maybe it has some connection with my mom or even dad, I closed my eyes for a minute to relax, I will be turning 18 tomorrow. I really wish my mom was here. I miss my parents.
Being the daughter of a rouge wolf, has made life harder for Avery, everyone and everything despises her in Silverwood. She didn't know who her father was, but everyone made sure to let her know she was the daughter of a ruthless rouge. They had always reminded her she was an abomination and that's why her mother had abandoned her.
Girls her age avoided her like a plague, wherever she went to, the pack members made her feel miserable and isolated her. She has had several thoughts of running away but she was scared of leaving and her mother coming back and not finding her.
Avery heard a low noise which pulled her out of her deep thoughts. She decided to follow the sound. As my eyes landed on the figure in front me, I turned my back and started to run.
I found myself running and running, not knowing exactly where I was heading to but I was running. "Stop right there." A voice thundered behind me, which only made me run even more.
I just saw those men brutally ripping out the throat of a girl and I secretly feared I will be next. What if something happened to me? I haven't lived my life yet.
I suddenly tripped and fell on my face and I heard the men stop as they chuckled darkly. "Looks like we've got something to play with tonight." One of them said and I curled up in a ball.
"She looks so fragile and weak." The other said and I only hugged my knees even more tightly as his cold fingers touched my bare skin.
"What do you think you're doing?" A voice came from the other side and the cold hand I was feeling disappeared. "So this is what you do to vulnerable ladies in my father's pack?"
"No, not at all. Don't get us wrong prince Lucien, we are only trying to help her." One of the men chuckled as I felt someone lift me effortlessly in the air.
"Get rid of them." He said and a few seconds after, I could hear distant scream and I slowly opened my eyes to see prince Lucien staring right at me with a disgusted look.
"You can't even protect yourself, how do you want to protect the whole pack? Seems like the moon goddess gave me the wrong choice of mate." He shook his head in pity as he looked down at me. "I reject you, Avery."
As he said those words, I felt like someone stabbed me across the heart. I felt a sharp pain that refused to leave and the air surrounding me became really cold.
I had just got my wolf today and I realized prince Lucien was my mate. He realized that too this morning but didn't say a word about it.
"Wait..." I tried to stop him but he already dashed off and he left me there, on the cold floor after being rejected.
I broke down into tears and I remained there for a few minutes before I felt a warm hand on my head. I looked up to see beta Donovan looking down at me with a warm smile.
"You'll be fine." He said as he ran his fingers through my hair.
"He rejected me, uncle. Everyone hates me. They all do." I sobbed as I threw myself in his arms and he patted my back gently.
"But I don't. They don't see the beauty in you like I do Avery. You're a bright, red and precious gemstone and not everyone will appreciate you until they lose you." He said and I could not help but cry more and more.
I had expected out of everyone who hated me, my mate would be different but he didn't even give it a second thought before rejecting me. I couldn't blame him though. He had Stella.
Stella was all I could never be and he had her so I see no reason why he should actually come to me, a weak good-for-nothing wolf.
I knew part of the reason Donovan was here to comfort me was because his daughter was the reason my last hope just slipped from my hands.
"I'll be fine." I said to myself but I knew that was a total lie. I have always been neglected right since I could remember and everyone spoke to my face about being a rogue and I could never fit in.
Right since I was a child, I yearned for love and acceptance from the society but I only got hatred and maltreatment in return. Only Beta Donovan was good enough to have a heart.
Just as I was about to say another word to Beta Donovan, a couple of guards marched towards us and grabbed my arms roughly. "Beta Donovan, you will excuse us. Prince Lucien asked us to return her to the pack house this instant." One of the guards and Beta Donovan stood up, taking a step back.
No one could defy the alpha or his son's orders and realizing he was my mate this morning made me feel a bit special and important that he would finally recognize me and so would everyone else.
I was dragged into the pack house but not to my room in the basement, I was dragged to the one hallway I only peeped into when everyone in the pack house was out, and that was Lucien's quarters.
"What am I doing here?" I asked them but they didn't answer my question and just shoved me into one of the doors, closing the door behind me.
"Wait, let me out of here. What's going on?" I pounded my fists against the door but no one answered. Panic began to set in.
What if this was a set up and I will end up being killed because I was found in the alpha's son's room. Although I was hated, I didn't want to die so very young.
"Ahh, you're here." I heard Lucien 's voice, which made me look back, gluing my body to the door.
"I am very sorry my lord." I fell on my knees pleadingly with tears forming in my eyes. "I was brought in here by the guards, please do not punish me."
"Of course I will not punish you, little one. The moon goddess might have made the wrong choice in making us mates but since she has, I might as well enjoy you since no other man will take you." He said, looking at me hungrily.
No matter what, I know my worth but I wasn't allowed to say a thing before he grabbed me. I forcefully tried to snatch myself from his grip but he hit me, pushing me to the bed.
"You will listen to me." He said and I let out an ear piercing scream which resounded through the whole room.
Avery's POV
My eyes swung open and the unfamiliar environment I was in became apparent and a sinking feeling settled in my stomach.
Panic surged through my body as I realized I was in Lucien's bed. Thoughts of the previous night flooded my head and I couldn't believe he took advantage of me.
I felt sore all over my body as I forced myself to sit up and I realized I was fully dressed again. I made attempt to get out of bed and just then, Lucien emerged from his dressing room, fully dressed.
He was adjusting the sleeves of his white shirt when his gaze met mine and his expression was a mix of disgust and annoyance.
"What are you still doing here?" His voice zipped through the air, stern and unwelcoming. I could tell I had to leave immediately since he was already chasing me out of the room, not talking about the fact that he just defiled me.
As I pushed myself out of bed, I looked up at him. "Lord Lucien.... "
"I said get out Avery." He scowled and I felt a wave of humiliation wash over me as I scurried out, my heart pounding in my chest, and tears welled up in my eyes as I walked towards my room.
The echoes of my footsteps reverberated through the corridor, each step a reminder I was different now and everything about me became even more worse after I got my wolf and found out about my mate.
I fell to my bed and crawled up to the corner, I couldn't help but cry as I hugged my knees tightly. I felt a mixture of shame, sadness and fear. From what I could remember, it would most definitely not be his last time.
"Get out of that room right now and come help us prepare for the guest, Avery." I heard a shout from the door and I hurried to my feet, not bothering to take my bath. I just changed my clothes as I rushed out of the room.
By the time I got out, everyone was preparing for what I don't know about. "The new Alpha Devon will be arriving to see the alpha today so everything must be perfectly in order. Do not ruin anything for us this time, rogue so just go attend to Lady Stella." The head maid yelled at me and I rushed up to Stella's room.
She was the last person I wanted to serve. She was the spoiled brat of Beta Donovan and I couldn't tell if he truly raised her.
She was the reason Lucien didn't think twice after rejecting me, he had her. I walked up to her room and immediately I stepped into her drawing room, a vase came flying at me, which missed me just by an inch.
"Ohh my goodness you filthy rogue. Would you walk like you have life and not like you're here to kill me." She barked at me and what she said didn't even make any sense but I bowed gently and apologetically. "Get me my morning coffee and I must not desire it again before I get it."
"Yes my lady." I bowed and rushed downstairs to get her coffee as she demanded. She would make life hell for me if I was even a minute late.
I hurried down to the kitchen, determined to make Stella's coffee the way she liked it, to avoid trouble and torture early in the morning.
The aroma of the coffee filled the air as I carefully carried the steaming cup towards Stella's room. Eager to get this over and done with, I rounded the corner to her room and collided with Lucien, the coffee splashing onto him as the cup fell along with the tray, shattering on the floor.
I just stood there with my mouth agape knowing it was the end of me. Lucien didn't say anything and just stared at his shirt and just then, Stella emerged from behind him. When she saw the broken pieces of the cup, she exploded.
"Are you crazy? That cup is worth more than you would ever be, you good for nothing rogue." Her cause thundered, as I fell on my knees, pleading with tears forming in my eyes.
"Oohh my goodness. You even spilled it all over Lucien. Do you have a death wish?" She screamed as her palm connected with my face and tears streamed down my cheeks.
The slap echoed through the room, leaving a stinging mark on my cheek.
"I am so sorry..." I sniffed. "It was an honest mistake." I pleaded as Stella tended to Lucien, pulling off his shirt to check his skin.
The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by my ragged breath. I felt small and defeated like I usually felt whenever they were torturing me but now this was worse.
Lucien hadn't said a word and just stood there, looking at himself along with Stella. "Will you just kneel there? Or do you want me to step on the piece of glass and wound myself again. You piece of..."
"Let her be Stella." Lucien said quietly as he prevented her from slapping me again. "Don't waste your energy on her, I'll make sure she regrets this."
His words sent chills down my spine and I grabbed his legs pleadingly. "Please have mercy on me my lord. It was a mistake, it was very stupid of me." I pleaded with tears rolling down my eyes. I knew his punishment better than anyone in this pack and they were the worst.
"Get off me." He kicked me and my hand landed on the broken glass and it pierced into my soft skin. "You can order her around as much as you want to Stella. She'll do all the laundry in this building by hands and clean the guest room during Alpha Devon's stay. I'll deal with her more later.
Lucien walked off and Stella huffed as she walked after him and I just sat there, crying. It was over for me.
Devon's POV
I raced through the heart of the dense woods, the sound of my feet pounding against the ground as I ran filled my ears. The cool breeze in my fur made me feel at peace than I've felt these past few days
I decided to leave my car behind and give my wolf the exercise it craved before continuing towards the pack house. The rhythmic thud of my footsteps echoed in the darkness, a primal connection to the wilderness.
I could smell the fresh scent of a river not far away and it would be nice for a dip. I increased my speed and in a few seconds, I got to the river before shifting to my human form, stretching gently.
I walked into the water, dipping into it and I was welcomed by the soothing embrace of it and it calmed my nerves.
The calmness was interrupted by a mysterious energy I haven't felt before. The mysterious energy enveloped the air as I stood in the water. I looked towards the direction the energy was coming from and just then, my eyes connected with a glowing green eyes, like that of a cat.
The young lady looked startled for a few minutes and although I couldn't see her full face. Her eyes held fleeting curiosity, but in an instant, she vanished into the shadows, and her chestnut hair swung as she turned.
As the energy disappeared, the only essence of her presence lingering in the air was intoxicating my senses. It was the perfect scent of rose oil and rose fragrance, and with each breath, it intoxicated me more.
"Alpha Devon." A voice suddenly disrupted me and I turned to look up at my beta who was holding a robe and clean clothes for me to wear. "It is only a two minutes drive to the pack house, we should get going."
I slowly stepped out of the water and cleaned up before changing. I looked back at the same spot I had seen that chestnut beauty before following my beta back out of the woods.
As we stepped out of the woods, I saw the buildings I failed to see when I got out of the car there before getting back into my car.
In less than two minutes, we got to the gates of the pack house and drove in, where Lucien, the alpha's son and his woman was waiting. Yet, my attention was diverter, I still had that chestnut haired lady in mind.
"Alpha Devon, welcome to our pack." Lucien held out his hand and I took it with a small smile. "My father is very busy and out of the pack, so I'll be the one attending to you during your visit."
"Thank you for your time." I said to him and the lady beside him spoke up enthusiastically.
"Welcome Alpha Devon." She said holding out her hand and I took it politely before kissing the back of her hand.
"You look lovely my lady." I said and she smiled before turning to lead me up with Lucien.
"I heard you just took over your pack few weeks ago. I'm sure you are getting the hang of things." Lucien asked and I just hummed as we stepped into the main hall.
My eyes caught the sight of a chestnut haired lady ascending the stairs hastily and intrigue filled me. I couldn't shake the feeling of asking who she was off but I decided not to.
Her scent was even sharper than it was by the river and I wondered if I was the only one feeling this intoxication and attraction towards her.
"Stella will show you to your room Alpha Devon." Lucien said as Stella removed her arm from his before looking at me with a smile.
"No problem. Thank you for your hospitality." I said and as we walked towards the room, she tried starting a conversation but I wasn't interested in anything she was trying to say.
My thoughts lingered on the enigmatic lady and the anticipation to see how she actually looked filled me up.
"You look troubled my alpha." My beta said as I settled in the room after Stella had left. "Is there anything you want to know about?"
"That chestnut haired lady we saw going up the stairs. I want every detail about her by tomorrow morning." I said and he bowed before walking out of the room.
I don't know what the attraction was but I definitely wanted to know more about her. As I changed, I was called out for dinner and I walked towards the dining hall, after the maid.
I sat gently and just then, the rose scent filled the air and a long and slender fingers dropped a plate gently and gracefully and the grace captivated me.
Her being right next to me made me fear I would actually be intoxicated till the point I would lose myself.
I felt the urge to talk to her but immediately after she served me, she was gone again, leaving me yearning for more.
In the midst of dinner, Stella spoke up. "Alpha Devon, if I may ask, what about your mate?" She asked the topic that resonated with the primal instincts of my wolf.
"I don't have one yet. I hope to meet her or a woman I'll fall in love with and my wolf agrees." I said and Lucien spoke up.
"We have lots of beautiful she wolves here that might interested you." Lucien said and Stella nodded in approval as she looked at one of the maids.
"Ask my ladies to come now. We would like to introduce them to Alpha Devon." She said and in a few minutes, some ladies walked in.
Two blondes and a black haired lady who looked at me seductively but it only irritated me. None of them captured my interest and my gaze went back to the chestnut haired maiden who just walked in with a tray of food.
She looked even more beautiful with her hair in a messy low bun. She looked exhausted as she walked towards the table.
"What about her?" I asked gesturing towards the chestnut haired lady.
"Avery?" Stella asked as she looked at her and realizing I was talking about her, she tripped and the entire content on the tray came crashing down as she slipped.
"What the hell is wrong with you Avery." Stella screamed at her and I rushed over to her.
"Are you okay?" I asked her as she started to cry.
"There's no need to bother yourself about her alpha Devon. She is nothing but a maid who has broken a lot of stuffs from my kitchen today." Stella said and Avery hurriedly tried picking the broken glass up but it cut her bruised hand.
"Caleb." I called to my beta as I took Avery and lifted her in my arms. "Even if someone is your maid, treat them like they're human. Asher will clean off the mess she made. Please excuse me."
