Sloane.
Three weeks in the werewolf realm, and I still felt like an alley cat stranded in a cage of tigers.
The club was called The Black Crest, an exclusive den in the heart of the capital city where pack elders, high ranking enforcers, and wealthy purebloods gathered under the guise of an annual solstice gala. The heavy bass of the music vibrated through the floorboards, thick with the heavy scents of cedar, damp earth and raw dominance emitting from the men.
As a half breed - half human, half wolf - my inner animal was quiet, buried under human blood. Most purebloods treated me like a stray dog or an exotic pet.
Case in point: Elder Vane. A grey haired bloated pack elder who had been concerning me by the bar for twenty minutes, smelling like cheap cigars and stale brandy.
"You don't belong on the outer fringes, girl," Vane rasped, his thick fingers brushing my bare forearm. "A half human girl needs protection in a city like this. You can't even cross the palace threshold. My estate has plenty of room for a pretty thing like you."
"I'm good, thanks," I muttered, yanking my arm back. "I prefer sleeping without a leash."
Before he could grab me again, I turned on my heel and slipped past a heavy curtain into the quiet VIP corridor.
The hallway was dimly lit by red wall sconces. I leaned against the cold brick wall, taking a deep breath of the air, trying to shake the disgust coating my skin.
Then the air in the corridor changed.
The ambient noise of the club seemed to drop off a cliff. A sudden, crushing weight of authority flooded the hallway, hitting me like a wall. My quiet dormant wolf suddenly bristled under my skin, whining in submission and desire all at once.
That's strange. I thought to myself. This had never happened before.
Footsteps sound against the tile. He stepped out from the shadows near the private elevators. Tall, broad shouldered, clad in a dark tailored suit. A matte steel half mask covered the upper half of his face, hiding his eyes, leaving only a sharp, stubbled jawline and full, firm lips visible.
He stopped five feet from me. Even behind the mask, I felt his gaze burning straight through my black dress.
"You're in the wrong wing, little bird," his voice rolled out, it was a deep gravelly baritone that vibrated right through my ribs.
"I was avoiding a creep," I said, trying to keep my voice steady, though my pulse was racing in my throat. "Didn't realize I needed a hall pass."
He took two slow, deliberate steps toward me. The scent of him hit my lungs - crushed pine needles, cold rain, and dark whiskey. It was addicting, intoxicating enough to make my head spin.
"You smell human," he growled low, his gaze dropping to my lips. "And yet your pulse is racing like a wolf in heat."
"Fuck off." I breathed, but I didn't step back. My heels were glued to the floor.
He reached out, his long calloused fingers closing around my waist, dragging me flush against his hard chest. The heat coming off him was insane. "Watch your tongue." He murmured against my ear, his stubble scraping my sensitive skin.
He kicked open the heavy door to a private suite behind us and hauled me inside. The lock engaged with a loud click.
The room was dark, lit only by the city lights filtering through the floor to ceiling glass. He shoved me against the closed door, his large hands sliding up my thighs, his thumb digging into my hips with a possessive grip that made me gasp.
'Sloane. Stop.' My inner voice barked but my wolf's whines and surrender was stronger.
"I don't even know your name or who you are," I panted, my hands reaching up to grip his broad shoulders.
"Even better. Then you won't regret it tomorrow,"he growled.
My fingers reached for the edge of his mask, wanting to strip it away, but his hand caught my wrist, pinning it above my head.
"Don't look at my face," he murmured, his mouth dropping to the crook of my neck, his sharp teeth grazing my pulse point until a sharp shiver shot down my spine. "Just tell me you want this."
"God, yes," I whimpered.
He didn't waste another second. His mouth moved to mine and slammed down into a brutal, starving kiss that swallowed my breath. His tongue pushed past my lips, tasting of dark liquor. He unzipped my dress with one swift tug, letting the fabric pool at my waist, his hands flew up to cup my bare breasts, rolling his thumbs over my nipples until my knees nearly buckled.
"Are you sure?" He asked, now staring deep into my eyes.
"Hmm," I nodded.
"I need words."
"God, yes!" I snapped out of frustration and pent up desire. He lifted me effortlessly, my legs wrapping around his waist. I didn't know when he had unbuckled his belt, all I felt within the next few seconds was him aligning himself and driving deep inside me in one heavy thrust.
A sharp, loud cry ripped from my throat. He filled me completely, stretching my core with a thick, searing heat that made my vision blur. He set a brutal, relentless pace against the wooden door, every deep drive pushing me higher into a wild, frantic rhythm I'd never felt in my life.
His teeth sank into my neck, it wasn't a full mate mark, but a sharp possessive bite that sent a shockwave of pleasure straight to my core. My inner walls clamped down hard around him, a violent orgasm shattering my control as I screamed into his neck.
He let out a low, guttural roar, driving into me three more times before coming deep inside me, his whole frame shuddering against mine.
"That was insane." I breathed, causing him to laugh. He said and just held me steady in his arms.
I don't know how long I slept, or what happened next. But when I woke up, the suite was dead silent. I laid on a leather sofa, wrapped in a dark sheet. The space beside me was cold.
He was gone.
Leaving behind only his scent on my skin and a dull, throbbing ache between my thighs.
I slowly sat up, my hands shaking as I reached for my dress on the floor.
On the table sat a glass of water and my phone, which was vibrating violently against the surface.
I picked it up, my chest tightening when I saw the caller ID: MOM.
I slid the screen to answer, pressing the phone to my ear. "Mom? It's three in the morning. Is everything okay?"
"Sweetheart!" Her voice came through the speaker, shaky, breathless and filled with a strange, frantic energy. "I've been trying to reach you for more than four hours!"
"I was out," I muttered, pulling my dress over my shoulders. "What happened?"
"I need you to come to the Capital Estate right now," she stammered, her voice dropping to a loud, excited whisper. "Something happened while you were gone. I....I did something crazy!"
"Mom," I let out a loud sigh. "I've only been away from home for a week. What did you do?"
"Before you came to the werewolf realm, I've been seeing someone," she admitted, her voice now sounding like a college girl.
I arched a brow in amusement and curiosity. "Okay? That's surprising. You never told me."
"That's because....." She hesitated, then continued. "To be honest, Sloane. I married the Alpha right now. We just finished the ceremony."
Sloane.
The cab ride to the Capital Estate was a blur of neon signs and pounding rain. My mother's words echoed in my head like a loop.
'I married the Alpha.'
My stomach churned with a toxic mix of dread and disbelief. My mother, Anya, a werewolf socialite who avoided anything to do with the wolf world for twenty years because she ran away with a human, had just married the most powerful pureblood in the Realm.
It didn't make sense.
She hated wolves.
The cab pulled up to the massive iron gates of the Alpha's estate. Two guards, built like brick walls, stepped out of the sentry booth, their eyes glowing faint yellow in the dim light. They scanned the cab, their noses twitching, before nodding to the driver. The gates swung open with a low, metallic groan.
The mansion was a sprawling monstrosity of dark stone and towering spires, half hidden by a thick layer of fog. It looked less like a home and more like a fortress.
I paid the driver, grabbed my purse and stepped out into the biting cold. The guards didn't miss a beat, they were tracking my every move. The air here was thick with the scent of pine, damp earth and untamed power.
This was indeed the Alpha territory.
The heavy oak front door opened before I could even reach for the knocker. My mother stood on the threshold, her green eyes wide, her blonde hair slightly disheveled. She wore a long, elegant silk gown, but her hands were trembling.
"Sweetheart! You're here!" She gasped, pulling me inside. "Oh, Thank God. I was so worried."
She hugged me tight, smelling faintly of jasmine and something else - a heavy, unfamiliar musk that made my wolf bristle.
"Mom, what the hell is going on?" I whispered, pulling back. "You married the Alpha? You hate wolves."
"It's complicated, baby," she stammered, her gaze darting to the wide, curved staircase that led up to the second floor. "He's...he's different. And I needed to protect us after... after what happened since your father's passing,"
I frowned. "Dad was human. Plus, he died years ago. And we lived in the human realm, until you moved here four months ago and I decided to have fun by moving in three weeks ago. Now you're getting married?"
"Sweetheart, I know it's crazy but you have to-" She was cut short when a low, resonant chime echoed from the grand entrance hall. A butler, tall and thin, dressed in a sharp black suit, stepped forward, clearing his throat.
"My sincerest apologies for the interruption, Luna," the butler announced, his voice carrying clearly through the quiet hall. "But the Alpha has just signaled for the official announcement."
Luna. The title hit me like a physical blow. My mother was now the Alpha's mate and queen. The Luna of the most powerful pack in the realm.
The heavy double doors of the grand ballroom swung open, revealing a glittering scene of pureblood wolves in formal attire. The music swelled, a formal string quartet.
My mother's hand trembled in mine. "We have to go. He wants me to stand beside him."
She dragged me forward, pulling me into the blinding light of the ballroom. I walked beside her, my heart hammering against my ribs, my eyes scanning the sea of faces, the scent of a hundred different wolves flooding my senses.
At the very front of the room, on a raised dais, stood a man. Tall, broad shoulders. Clad in a dark tailored suit.
My breath suddenly locked in my throat.
He stood beside a massive stone fireplace, his back to us, but the crushing weight of his dominance filled the entire room.
He was the center of gravity, the undisputed apex predator.
As he turned slowly. My vision blurred for a second, the glass of champagne in a passing waiter's hand slipped from my fingers, shattering against the marble floor.
He wore no mask now. His sharp angular jawline, his full, firm lips - they were unmistakeable. The same scent of crushed pine needle and dark whiskey.
He was the same man who had fucked me against a closed door five hours ago in a private suite at The Black Crest.
Holy shit.
He was the Alpha.
His eyes, dark as night even though they were green, locked onto mine. The cold, possessive gaze I had felt through the mask now burned with a chilling recognition. He didn't flinch. His expression remained utterly unreadable. His gaze swept over my mother, then returned to me, his dark eyes, glinting with a dangerous, unspoken warning.
My mother, oblivious to the silent current passing between us, squeezed my hand, her voice filled with nervous excitement. "Sweetheart, I'd like you to meet Alpha Raul. My husband and your new step father."
I said nothing and just stared in silence. I feared if I opened my mouth, the truth would spill.
Raul took a slow step toward us, his physical presence dominating the space. He stopped three feet away, his gaze fixed on my face.
"Careful, little bird," he murmured, his voice low enough that only I could hear. "Walls have ears in this house."
He turned to my mother, his expression softening into a polite, charming smile that made my stomach churn. "Anya, my dear. Allow me to introduce myself finally to your daughter," he said, taking my mother's hand. "I am Alpha Raul, Ruler of the Blackridge pack. And you, I believe, are Sloane."
He extended his hand toward me. His large calloused fingers wrapped around mine, squeezing lightly, the contact sent a sharp jolt through my system but I forced myself to remain still.
"Pardon me, my Alpha," I said with a small bow of my head.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Sloane," he said, his voice entirely devoid of the hunger that had filled it ten hours ago. His eyes held no recognition now, no heat, just a polite cold indifference that cut deeper than any insult. "My wife has told me so much about you."
"I wish I could say the same." I muttered.
He released my hand while my mother's grip on my arm tightened, her smile now nervous.
"Sloane, darling, why don't you go introduce yourself to Elder Vane?" My mother whispered, trying to push me toward the side of the room where the old elder from the club was already looking our way, a smug, possessive glint in his eyes. "He's the most respected elder here and the most trusted."
"I didn't grow up in your world, mom," I said in a low tone. "I don't know the politics of your pack elders."
Alpha Raul's gaze cut to me, sharp and dismissive. "Then you'll learn the rules fast. Your mother is Luna now. Her family is our family. You will show respect to the elders."
He didn't wait for a response. He turned, placing his hand on my mother's lower back, his posture shifting to that of a dominant, protective mate. He led her toward the center of the ballroom, leaving me standing alone, frozen, watching them.
My mind raced. The Alpha. My mother's husband was the same man I had just fucked. This was a nightmare. A cruel, twisted joke from the gods.
How was I going to be able to live in the house with a man whom I'm forbidden to touch, yet I crave him?
SLOANE.
The morning sun did nothing to warm the stone walls of the Black Ridge ancestral court.
I stood near the perimeter of the Great Hall, wearing an ivory wool dress my mother's stylists had forced on me an hour ago. The room was packed with pureblood nobles, pack alpha reps, and high ranking enforcers attending the formal Pack Court, the morning assembly where pack business, territory disputes, and bloodlines were officially recorded.
Every gaze in the room felt like a physical weight on me.
"Look at her," a female wolf two rows over whispered, not even bothering to lower her voice. "A half blood stray living in the main house. Luna's mongrel daughter."
"I doubt she even has a wolf," her companion sneered, taking a slow sip of blood wine. "She smells like human dirt."
My hands clenched into tight fists inside my pockets, my fingernails digging into my palms. I held my chin up, staring straight ahead at the raised dais where my mother sat in a plush velvet chair beside an empty Alpha throne. My mother looked regal in her emerald dress, but the pale, rigid line of her neck told me she heard every single whisper echoing across the marble floor.
Heavy footsteps echoed from the rear archway.
The low hum of conversation died instantly. The room went dead silent as a wave of cold, crushing authority flooded the air. My quiet wolf bristled under my skin, my pulse jumped in my throat before I even turned around.
Alpha Raul stepped into the hall.
He wore a dark charcoal suit, tailored so sharply it emphasized the broad width of his shoulders and his dangerous build. His hair was neat, his sharp end jawline smooth, his green eyes scanning the crowd with a flat cold indifference.
He didn't walk toward his throne. He walked straight toward me.
The surrounding nobles parted like water, backing away to give him a wide berth. He stopped three inches from my side, his towering frame casting a dark shadow over me. His scent hit my lungs, instantly making my knees feel weak.
I kept my eyes fixed on the dais, refusing to look up at him.
"They're staring," I muttered under my breath, my voice flat.
"Let them," Raul said, his low baritone vibrating through my ribs. "You stand beside me."
Before I could pull away, his large hand settled squarely against the small of my back. His grip was warm, heavy and entirely unyielding as he guided me through the crowd toward the raised platform.
A collective gasp rippled through the hall. By placing his hand on me and forcing me to walk at his flank, he was publicly signaling to the entire pack that I was under the Alpha's direct protection, untouchable to anyone who valued their neck.
Elder Vane stepped into our path near the foot of the dais, his dark eyebrows furrowed, his bloated face flushed with indignation.
"Alpha Raul," Vane rasped, bowing his head slightly, though his greedy eyes darted to me with open disdain.
"Surely the court protocol does not allow a half blood non member to stand within the inner circle during the high proceedings."
Raul stopped. His hand stayed clamped on my back, his thumb pressing lightly into my spine through the wool. He looked down at the old elder, his eyes turning into two cold slits.
"My court, Elder Vane," Raul said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a quiet, terrifying weight that made the old wolf flinch. "My house. My rules. If you have an objection to who stands at my flank, you can challenge the ruling on the sand."
Elder Vane's jaw worked silently. He swallowed hard, backed two paces away, and bowed his head lower. "Of course, Alpha."
Raul led me past him, steering me toward the quiet, curtained gallery behind the main throne before releasing his grip.
"Stay here," he ordered quietly. "Don't move until the court adjourns."
He turned and stepped out onto the dais, taking his seat on the heavy stone throne. My mother offered him a tight, grateful smile, but he barely acknowledged her, immediately opening the ledger to address a boundary dispute on the northern border.
Thirty minutes passed. The drone of property lines and pack taxes made my head ache.
I couldn't stand the suffocating air in the gallery any longer. I slipped out through a side archway, intending to find a quiet courtyard. I then stopped walking and took a few deep breaths, but the moment I turned the corner into a deserted stone corridor, a hand shot out from the gloom.
An arm wrapped around my waist, yanking me into a dark, narrow alcove used for storing ceremonial armor.
The door clicked shut.
My back hit the cold stone wall, a gasp tearing from my throat. Before I could strike out, a broad heavy body crowded mine, blocking out the light.
Raul.
He stood inches away, his hands planted flat against the stone on either side of my head, trapping me in his shadow. His green eyes burned down into mine with a dark heat that made my breath lock in my chest.
"I told you not to move," he growled, his voice a low, gravelly rasp near my ear.
"I don't take orders from you," I panted, my hands pressing flat against his broad chest, feeling the hard muscle beneath his suit. "And last night was a mistake."
He leaned in closer, his chin scraping against my cheek as his head dipped toward my neck. He took a slow, deep breath, inhaling the scent of my skin.
"No," he whispered, his full lips brushing the shell of my ear, sending a shiver straight down my spine. "It was a claim."
"You're my mother's husband," I hissed, pushing against his chest with all my strength, though he didn't budge an inch. "You're the Alpha of this pack, and she is your Luna. What you did at the club-"
"Your mother and I have an arrangement, little bird," Raul interrupted, his teeth lightly grazing my pulse point, making my knees buckle. "A legal paper to satisfy the elders. Nothing more. But you....you carry my mark on your skin."
My breath hitched. The bite marks on my neck from last night throbbed beneath my collar.
Before I could answer, quick, heavy footsteps echoed down the stone corridor outside the door.
Raul went instantly still.
He clamped a hand over my mouth, pressing my body flat against his, as two male voices stopped right outside our door. Just then, one stopped. "We can't talk here. Let's move."
"Sure."
Immediately as they left, Raul let go of my mouth. "Let's go back."
"Ugh...yeah, sure." I nodded dumbfoundedly. But as soon as he left, I stayed back thinking about the two male voices from earlier.
Something in my guts told me something was wrong. But I just couldn't put my finger on it.
