Chapter 1 The Moon's Unwanted Claim

I stood in the middle of Whitmore Hall with my hands tight at my sides. The candles flickered like they were nervous too. My heart beat so hard I could feel it in my throat. This was really happening.

My uncle, Edward Sinclair, wouldn't stop talking. "You can't say no, Eleanor. The Nightfang Pack's alpha wants this marriage. If you refuse, it means war. Our family won't survive that."

I looked straight at him. "I'm not some prize to be handed over. I have my own power. You know that."

Before he could answer, the big doors opened. Cold air rushed in and made the candles dance wildly. A group of tall men walked inside. They moved like predators, quiet and strong. At the front was him, Alexander Grant.

He was bigger than I imagined. Broad shoulders, dark hair, and those golden-amber eyes that locked right onto mine. The second our eyes met, something pulled inside my chest. Sharp. Warm. Unwanted. The fated mate bond. I had prayed it would never wake up, but here it was, tugging at me like a rope I couldn't cut.

Alexander stopped a few steps away. His voice was deep and rough. "So you're the enchanted one. Eleanor Whitmore."

I forced myself to stand tall even though my legs felt weak. "And you're the Alpha they call the Butcher of Blackridge. I hoped the stories weren't true."

A small, dangerous smile touched his lips. "They are." He walked around me slowly, looking me up and down like he was deciding if I was worth the trouble. "The darkness is growing. The rifts are opening. Your magic can help close them. Our marriage will join your power to my pack... and to me."

My uncle stepped forward quickly. "The papers are ready. The wedding can happen on the next full moon."

I felt my magic stir under my skin, warm and silver like moonlight. "What if I don't want this? What if I say no?"

Alexander leaned closer. His scent-pine, leather, and wild night-filled my nose. "Then many people will die. Including you." His voice dropped low, just for me. "The bond is already calling us, enchantress. You can fight it, but it won't let go."

A real shiver ran through me. Part of it was anger. Another part was something hotter that I didn't want to think about.

Suddenly, a long howl cut through the night outside. The windows shook. One of Alexander's men, a scarred fighter named Charles Beaumont, spoke up. "Alpha, scouts saw movement on the eastern border. Hawthorne's pack... and something worse. Shadows."

Alexander's face changed. All softness disappeared. "We leave now. Eleanor rides with us. The wedding won't wait."

I tried to argue, but strong hands were already guiding me out. I looked back at my uncle one last time. He looked relieved and guilty at the same time.

The forest was dark as we rode. I sat on my horse next to Alexander. Trees pressed close on both sides. The moonlight felt heavier tonight, like it was watching us. The bond between us kept pulling, making my skin tingle.

"Why do you take brides by force?" I asked after a while.

He glanced at me. "Only the ones the gods choose. Your power sings to the moon the same way my wolf sings to it. Deny it all you want, but it's there."

I opened my mouth to argue, but a scream tore through the trees. Black shapes burst out of the darkness-twisted creatures with empty eyes and sharp claws. One jumped straight at my horse.

I didn't think. I just acted. I threw my hand out and moonlight shot forward like a bright whip. The creature screamed and melted into smoke. But more kept coming.

Alexander roared. The sound was half man, half wolf. He jumped from his horse and tore into the shadows with claws and fury. "Stay behind me!" he shouted.

Everything turned to chaos. I kept throwing spells, tying the shadows down with threads of light. My arm burned as one creature got too close and slashed me. The pain was sharp and deep, like fire mixed with poison.

Then Alexander was right there. He ripped the creature apart and pulled me against his chest. His body felt like a wall. For one moment, our eyes met and the bond flared so strong it took my breath away. I felt his heart beating fast against me. Mine answered.

"They're pulling back!" someone yelled.

The fight ended as quickly as it started. But as the last shadow disappeared, a cold whisper slid into my mind: The bride will break the alpha... or the Void will take you both.

I must have gone pale because Alexander noticed right away. "What happened? Are you hurt?"

I pressed my hand over the cut on my arm and shook my head. "It's nothing... for now."

We started riding again toward his keep. The bond between us felt heavier than ever. I was tied to this strong, dangerous man by old magic and a prophecy I never asked for. My blood carried secrets that could save everyone or destroy us.

The shadows knew my name now.

And they were hungry.

Chapter 2 Shadows in the Stone Walls

My arm still burned from the claw mark as we rode through the night. Every step of the horse sent a fresh wave of pain up my shoulder, but I bit my lip and stayed quiet. I didn't want Alexander to see how much it hurt. Showing weakness in front of him felt too dangerous.

The trees finally opened up, and Nightfang Keep rose ahead of us like a giant made of dark stone. Tall towers reached for the moon. High walls stood covered in climbing vines that looked almost alive. This was going to be my new home. The thought made my stomach twist.

Alexander rode right beside me the whole way. He kept glancing over, like he was checking if I was still there. The bond between us pulled stronger now that we were closer to his territory. It felt like a warm thread wrapped around my heart, tugging whenever he looked at me. I hated how much I noticed him, his broad back, the way his hands held the reins, the low sound of his breathing.

We passed through the main gates. Wolves howled in the distance, welcoming their alpha home. Men and women came out to meet us, carrying torches. They stared at me with open curiosity. Some looked hopeful. Others looked worried.

A tall woman with sharp eyes stepped forward. "Welcome back, Alpha. We prepared rooms for your... guest."

"Bride," Alexander corrected in a firm voice. "Eleanor Whitmore is my bride. See that she is treated with respect." He swung down from his horse and came to my side. Before I could protest, he lifted me off my horse like I weighed nothing. His hands were warm on my waist. For a second, our bodies pressed close, and the bond flared hot between us.

"I can walk," I said quickly, pulling away even though my legs felt shaky.

His amber eyes narrowed, but he let go. "Your arm is bleeding. Let's get it cleaned."

Inside the keep, the halls were wide and lit with large fireplaces. The air smelled of wood smoke and herbs. Alexander led me to a big room with a heavy wooden door. A fire was already crackling in the hearth. A large bed stood against one wall, covered in furs. My face grew warm just looking at it.

"Sit," he said, pointing to a chair near the fire. He brought over clean cloths and a bowl of water mixed with something that smelled sharp and clean.

I sat down slowly. Alexander knelt in front of me. His big hands were surprisingly gentle as he rolled up my sleeve. When his fingers touched the wound, I sucked in a sharp breath.

"Sorry," he muttered. He cleaned the cut carefully. "These shadow creatures carry poison. Your magic fought most of it off, but you'll need rest."

I watched his face while he worked. Up close, he looked less like a monster and more like a man carrying too much weight. There were small scars on his jaw and neck. His dark hair fell forward, hiding his eyes for a moment.

"Why me?" I asked softly. "There must be other women with magic."

He paused and looked up. Those golden eyes held mine. "The prophecy is clear. Only the moon-touched enchantress can seal the rifts. And the bond... it chose you. I felt it the moment I saw you in that hall." His voice dropped lower. "I didn't ask for this either, Eleanor. But I won't let my people die because I was too proud to accept help."

His words surprised me. I had expected him to act like he owned me completely. Instead, there was something almost honest in his tone. The bond tugged again, warmer this time. I looked away fast.

Once the bandage was tied, he stood up. "You should sleep. Tomorrow will be long. We have to prepare for the ceremony."

I stood too, ignoring the dizziness. "I want to know everything. The rifts, the shadows, your pack's enemies. Don't keep me in the dark."

Alexander studied me for a long moment. A small, almost proud smile touched his lips. "You're not what I expected. Good. The weak don't survive here." He walked to the door but stopped before leaving. "My beta, Edward Sinclair wait, no, your uncle shares the name, but mine is different. Anyway, one of my trusted men will guard your door tonight. Rest, Eleanor. You're safe here... for now."

The door closed behind him with a heavy thud. I let out a long breath and sat on the edge of the bed. Safe? The whisper from the shadow still echoed in my head. The bride will break the alpha...

I touched the bandage on my arm. My magic hummed quietly under my skin, checking the wound. It was healing faster than normal, thanks to the moonlight pouring through the window. I walked over and looked outside. The forest stretched dark and endless. In the distance, I saw flickering lights, maybe campfires from rival packs.

A soft knock came at the door. I opened it a little. A young woman with kind eyes and braided brown hair stood there. "I'm Victoria Lane," she said quietly. "The alpha asked me to help you with anything you need. I brought some night clothes and food."

I let her in. Victoria moved around the room easily, setting down a tray of bread, cheese, and warm soup. She seemed gentle, but I could sense a quiet strength in her too.

"Thank you," I said. "Have you been here long?"

"Since I was a girl. The pack took me in after my village was attacked by shadows." She glanced at my bandaged arm. "You fought them tonight, didn't you? Word travels fast here."

We talked while I ate. Victoria told me small things about the keep where the kitchens were, how the pack trained, and how Alexander had lost his parents to the same darkness years ago. "He's hard on the outside," she said, "but he carries a lot for all of us."

After she left, I changed into the soft nightgown and lay down. Sleep didn't come easy. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Alexander's face or the shadow creatures. The bond kept me restless, like a low hum in my blood.

Hours passed. The moon moved across the sky. I finally drifted off, but strange dreams pulled me under. In the dream, I stood in a ruined temple. Moonlight poured over broken stones. Alexander was there, reaching for me, but shadows wrapped around his legs, pulling him down. I tried to run to him, but my own magic turned against me, wrapping around my throat.

"Eleanor!" a voice shouted.

I woke up gasping. Someone was banging on my door. I stumbled out of bed and opened it. Charles Beaumont stood there, breathing hard, his sword already drawn.

"Lady Eleanor, you need to come quickly. The alpha is in the great hall. There's been an attack on one of our border patrols. William Hawthorne's men were involved... and they left a message."

I pulled on a robe and followed him through the cold stone corridors. My bare feet felt freezing on the floor. When we reached the great hall, the sight made my stomach drop.

Alexander stood in the middle, shirtless, with fresh blood on his side. He looked furious. Several of his warriors surrounded a captured man tied to a chair. The prisoner had a nasty smile on his face.

Alexander's eyes found mine immediately. The bond pulled tight. "You shouldn't see this," he said, but his voice lacked force.

I walked closer anyway. "What happened?"

The prisoner laughed. "Your pretty new bride won't save you, Grant. Hawthorne sends a warning. The moon will run red on your wedding night. The enchantress belongs to the shadows now."

Alexander growled and grabbed the man by the throat. "Tell me everything you know."

I stepped forward and placed my hand on Alexander's arm. His skin was hot under my fingers. "Let me try something," I whispered.

I reached for my magic and let a soft thread of moonlight touch the prisoner. His eyes widened in fear as the light forced the truth out of him. "Hawthorne... he made a deal with the Void. They want the bride's power to open the biggest rift yet. Your marriage is the perfect trap."

The prisoner gasped and slumped forward, unconscious.

Alexander looked at me with surprise and something warmer. His hand covered mine on his arm. "You keep saving us tonight."

My heart raced. The bond was getting stronger, pulling us closer whether we wanted it or not. But the warning about the wedding night scared me. Shadows, rivals, and now a trap.

I looked up at Alexander. "We need to talk. Really talk. No secrets."

He nodded slowly. For the first time, he didn't look like the scary alpha everyone feared. He looked like a man who needed someone at his side.

But as we stood there, another distant howl echoed outside, longer and full of warning. The shadows were not done with us.

And my wedding was only days away.

Chapter 3 The Weights of the Bond

I could not stop shaking after what happened in the great hall. The prisoner's words kept repeating in my head. A trap on our wedding night. William Hawthorne working with the shadows. Everything felt too real and too close. Alexander stood near the fire with his side still bleeding. He looked tired but determined.

"You should not have seen that," he said in a low voice. His eyes met mine across the room and the bond pulled tight again. It felt like a living thing between us now. Warm and demanding.

I crossed my arms and tried to sound stronger than I felt. "I am part of this now whether you like it or not. Tell me the full truth about the rifts. No more hiding things from me."

He ran a hand through his dark hair and sighed. "The pack elders believe the main rift is under the old temple in the eastern mountains. Every full moon it grows wider. Shadows slip through and corrupt everything they touch. Your magic is the only thing strong enough to close it for good. That is why the bond chose you."

I walked closer to him. The cut on my own arm throbbed in time with my heartbeat. "What about Hawthorne? Why does he want me so badly?"

Alexander looked away for a moment. "He wants power. He thinks if he takes you before the ceremony he can control the moon magic himself. His pack has grown desperate. They lost many wolves to the darkness last season."

A servant brought fresh bandages and warm water. I surprised myself by stepping forward to help clean his wound. My fingers brushed his skin and the bond flared hot. He sucked in a quick breath but did not pull away. His body felt solid and warm under my touch. I tried to focus only on the cut.

"You are good at this," he said softly. His golden eyes watched my face carefully. "Most women in your position would be crying or begging to go home."

"I am not most women." I finished wrapping the bandage and stepped back. My cheeks felt warm. The room suddenly felt smaller with just the two of us.

Victoria Lane appeared at the door with some food and clothes for me. She gave me a small smile before leaving us alone again. I ate a little bread while Alexander told me more about the pack. How he became alpha after his father died fighting the shadows. How he carried the weight of every life lost on his shoulders.

The bond made it hard to stay angry with him. Every time he spoke I felt his pain and his strength at the same time. It scared me how much I wanted to understand him.

Later that night I lay in the big bed staring at the ceiling. Moonlight streamed through the window and called to my magic. I let a small ball of soft light dance above my hand. It felt comforting. But then the light flickered and a cold feeling crept in. The same whisper from the forest returned.

The bride will break the alpha.

I sat up quickly and the light vanished. My heart raced. Was the darkness already inside the keep? I slipped out of bed and put on a robe. The guard at my door nodded when I told him I needed fresh air. He followed me at a distance as I walked the stone halls.

The keep was quiet except for the occasional howl far away. I found a balcony overlooking the forest. Cool night air brushed my face. I closed my eyes and reached for my magic trying to sense any danger nearby.

Strong arms suddenly wrapped around me from behind. I gasped but the scent told me it was Alexander before I even turned. His chest pressed against my back. The bond sang between us loud and clear.

"You should be sleeping," he whispered near my ear. His breath was warm. His voice sounded rough with worry.

"I could not sleep. The shadows keep talking to me. They say I will destroy you."

He turned me around so we faced each other. His hands stayed on my waist. In the moonlight his face looked softer. "You will not destroy me, Eleanor. We will face this together. The bond is not just a chain. It can be a strength if we let it."

Our faces were very close. I could see the small scar on his lip. My hands rested on his chest without thinking. His heart beat fast under my palm. The pull grew stronger until I could barely think. He leaned down slowly giving me time to pull away.

When his lips touched mine the world narrowed to just us. The kiss was gentle at first then deeper. Heat spread through me like moonlight turned to fire. The bond wrapped around us both glowing bright in my mind. For a moment there were no shadows, no rivals, no prophecies. Only him and me.

He pulled back first, breathing hard. His eyes glowed brighter. "We should stop. The ceremony is soon and I want you to choose this with clear eyes."

I touched my lips still feeling the warmth. Part of me wanted to pull him back. Another part felt terrified of how much I already cared. I nodded and stepped away.

Back in my room I lay down again but sleep took a long time to come. The kiss replayed in my head over and over. Alexander Grant was dangerous in more ways than one. He made me feel things I never expected.

The next morning loud voices woke me. I dressed quickly and followed the noise to the main courtyard. Warriors were gathered around Alexander. Charles Beaumont looked angry.

"Hawthorne's pack was spotted near the river," he reported. "They left another warning. A dead wolf with a message carved on its side. The bride belongs to the void."

Alexander growled low in his throat. His hands clenched into fists. "We ride out at noon. Eleanor stays here under guard."

"No," I said, stepping forward. Everyone turned to look at me. "I am not staying behind. My magic is part of this fight. Let me help."

Alexander met my eyes. The bond pushed me to stand my ground. After a long moment he nodded. "You ride with me then. But stay close."

As we prepared the horses my heart pounded with fear and excitement.
