Ellen.
Pain. A feeling that should have been attached to my name. A forced part of me.~
My back felt like a thousand blocks had been placed on it as I struggled to get to my feet. It was yet another show time and I had been brought out to the fun house to embarrass myself while other wolves watched and laughed in both amusement and mockery. I wasn't sure for how long the play went on this time but I could barely feel my limbs, my organs barely functioning.
"More, Omega. More!"
My entire body ached badly. My wolf was almost unconscious and my bones felt like they had been trampled upon countlessly.
I struggled to catch my breath and get on my feet at the same time, but I crashed to the cold ground once again. This time, I didn't bother getting up, I let my body stay still. I was lying on spoilt and expired food, on stones and rocks, and the many other things that had been thrown at me. My nose caught the pungent stench of onion pus that had been thrown at my face and I could only grimace in my weakness.
Their laughter filled the hall once more, brutally soiling the once serene atmosphere, sounding like what my best friend would call a disturbing cackle. It was disturbing and I didn't care that they were laughing at me- well, I did, but there was nothing I could do.
I couldn't even help myself. Once again, they began asking for more but I was sure my body could no longer amuse them.
By now, even though my eyes were shut, I was sure the hall must be in its worst state and it hurt me even more, knowing I was responsible for its maintenance. Like a bolt, a rock was thrown at me and before I could duck lazily, it landed on my head.
My body went limp.
"That's enough now, everyone. Fun is over," I heard his voice, even the sound of it was like punishment to me.
Derek Stones, my main tormentor and future Alpha of the Crimson Pack had stepped into the hall and announced.
"Ow! She's such a weakling!"
"Smelly Omega!"
"Why don't you just die."
That and many more followed as they vacated the hall.
In my morbid state, I heard the heavy stomps he made with his boots as he emerged towards me. He was my tormentor and I recognized even the slightest smell of him.
"Clean up," he kicked the side of my stomach and exited the hall.
Certain that I was all alone, I rolled on my back and shut my eyes, releasing the pool of tears that had been stored in them for hours.
As I waited to regain my strength which doesn't usually take time- one surprising trait of an Omega- I thought of my life so far. My cursed life in the Crimson Pack.
It started from my birth. As though informing members of the Pack that something forbidden had been birthed, an intense earthquake struck the Crimson Pack the day I was born. Lives, properties, and businesses were destroyed in the disaster and my mother, Mabel Oliver, lost her Life birthing me.
From that moment on, I was considered inauspicious and a bad omen.
Growing up as an Omega, I was timid and weak. Unlike my peers, I was also a very slow learner. My first movement wasn't until I turned five and my first success to utter a complete sentence to express myself happened in my tenth year.
Just like everyone, my father treated me no differently. Dwayne Oliver, my father was the famous Beta of the Crimson Pack and it angered him to know that his first offspring turned out to be an Omega. He would constantly tell me how my existence brought shame to him and how he wished I was never born.
After all, he lost his precious mate because of me, and in that, I took a reason to not completely blame him for detesting me.
My father hated me, he bore no other feeling towards me except hate and fury, and he never hesitated to tell me whenever he got the chance. Aside Derek, he was the second person I feared the most.
My mother, Mabel Oliver was one of the highly respected and loved wolves in the Pack, she also served as a nurse in the Pack's medical house. Hence, it was difficult enduring the wolves blaming me unapologetically for her death.
They mocked and abused me whenever they had the chance and my father made no attempt to stop it. I was tagged a cursed wolf and they believed any wolf who got involved with me, would share in my accursed fate. Hence, I had no friends.
But that part of my life changed in my fifteenth year when I rescued a gray wolf who somehow got stuck on a cliff. She had hurt her shoulder and couldn't lift herself to the land. I was running an errand when I met her and I helped her up the cliff and treated her injury with some medicinal plants I found. One skill I possessed.
Her name was Natalie Wales and since then we became friends. Slowly, our relationship blossomed and we were soon best friends. She was the only one who didn't see me as bad luck or a tool for others convenience. She became my best friend.
Just as my strength started to fall in, the door burst open and footsteps rushed up to me.
"Ellen!" Natalie's voice drove into my ears, "Ellen, answer me!" Her mezzo-soprano voice was laced with extreme worry.
"N-Nat.." I breathed out, proving to her that I was alive.
By this time, my strength had developed enough for me to be able to get on my feet.
My wolf, Amy was still weak so I tried not to stress her too much so she could heal properly.
Natalie helped me properly to my feet and began leading me out of the hall, a part of my weight falling on her body.
"Stay with me, Ellen. I'll get you to the doctor."
Natalie kept talking to keep me from slipping out of consciousness.
"Nat? We're going to leave, right?"
"Yes. We'll get out of here alive. Both of us. So, for just one more day, El. Let's endure their shits. Just one day." She assured me like she always does. I found myself smiling despite the pain reverberating in my system.
According to the law of The Crimson Pack, wolves under the age of twenty were forbidden to live alone or outside the pack. This law was made to control the rogue population and it was the sole reason why I remained and bore the brute violence of the Pack members.
In two days, I will be twenty. An age of freedom. Natalie and I are planning to leave the Pack to find a real home. Somewhere without pain and torture. Somewhere where I am not considered a curse.
This reality, yet to come, was what I took faith in. But now, not so much.
I thought of Derek. He had grown too accustomed to tormenting me. I wondered why the moon goddess ever thought us a perfect pair. I was extremely glad when he rejected me as his mate two years back. I could not stand the thought of having a man like Derek- who found pleasure in my pain, and joy in my sorrow- as my mate.
As my eyes started to close in unconsciousness, my lips still remained flattened in a smile.
Just one day,' Natalie's words rang subtly in my head. Healing me of my inner pains.
'One more day and I'll be free.'
I fell into unconsciousness.
Before the next day, my body underwent its complete healing. Amy was back to life too and her cheerful greeting woke me up from my slumber.
As I prepared for work that morning, I glanced at my already packed luggage seated in front of my wardrobe. I had arranged it just yesterday in preparation for my escape, not wanting anything to delay Natalie's and I movement.
Our plan was simple and I had no doubt that we would be successfully. It was something we both anticipated for ages.
Grabbing my work bag, I slung it across my shoulder and head out of the house to work.
Natalie and I worked at the pack's hotel. Although the pay was meager and nothing compared to the tedious tasks we performed daily, it was better than having no decent job or money. It enabled us to save up for our departure from the Crimson Pack and so far, I could say we've gathered enough to take us out of the city and pay for an apartment.
"Hey, I'm tired," Natalie stood up with a sigh, nudging me to do the same.
We'd been working all morning and evening was slowly drawing in, yet we were only halfway through the task.
Thanks to the Alpha handover ceremony tomorrow, work was even more demanding today, and we had barely covered it.
"Come, let's take a break." She beckoned.
Feeling tired myself, I followed her without any argument to the last compartment of the bathroom, where we usually hide to rest whenever we get tired from work.
"I brought some food."
Natalie had this look on her face that she usually wore whenever she had done something wrong and mischievous, so I waited in anticipation. I watched as she reached into her pant pocket and pulled out a mushed-up brownie from it.
"I took it from the kitchen," she smiled proudly at me.
"Stole," I corrected.
"Yeah whatever," she shrugged, giving me a share of the pastry.
"You know you'd be in so much trouble if Paula finds out, right?" I reminded.
Paula was our direct observer and one of the top housekeepers in the hotel.
Natalie waved my words off with her palm, "eagle eyes?" She raised a brow, addressing Paula by the name she secretly gave her due to her sharp eyesight. "she wouldn't. I was careful."
I was hungry so I didn't mind the state of the brownie nor the fact that we were eating in a bathroom, I munched happily on the food.
"How is your body? Does it still ache from yesterday?" She asked with a mouthful of brownie.
"No, I healed just fine," I said, smacking my lips.
"This is so good," I hummed, taking more bites.
"Right?" Natalie licked her lips hurriedly, "it was worth every effort. Damn the royals who thinks they're the only one who gets to eat tasty food like this," she huffed. "I should do this more often, right El?"
"No, please don't. You might not be so lucky next time. If she catches you, you'd undergo the seven punishment and get whipped. I don't want you to pass through that hell, Nat."
"Geez, relax! I'm just kidding, nerd." she laughed at my over seriousness.
When we were done, we wiped our lips and washed our hands, getting rid of any evidence that could get us in trouble.
"We should join the others, there's still so much to do," I told her.
"Yeah," she huffed, "thanks to that jackass Derek, we get to do double the usual work. I'm so glad we won't be here to experience his reign. By this time tomorrow, we will both be far away from the pack, probably in another city already," she smiled in excitement.
I nodded, the thoughts causing my stomach to bubble in joy.
Suddenly, the door was thrown open and Brittany Stones, the Alpha's daughter stood in front of us with a burning glare.
"Why are you both here when there's still so much work to do?" She snapped at us.
I was dumbfounded for a moment.
"We've been working all day, we just paused for a minute to rest." Natalie started to explain to her.
"Oh spare me that! I've been in the hotel for hours and you both were not among the workers. Do you have an idea how important tomorrow is? Well, I bet you don't because you both are nothing but slaves! Cursed fellows that hang around one another!" She spat at us.
When we said nothing, she continued.
"Who gave you the right to rest? Did you forget your place so soon? You are meant to serve for eternity because you are lowlifes! You are meant to be trampled upon and work hard until your limbs start to fall apart and your eyes start to pull out. Until your death, you are meant to serve non-stop. That is exactly why you were born in the first place, you bitches!"
"Okay, that's enough now, Brittany. We heard you the first time, you don't have to go on," Natalie countered her.
"Or else what?" Brittany snapped at her.
I noticed Natalie starting to get up to possibly fight her, so I quickly acted.
"We're sorry. It would never happen again--
Like a sting from the deadliest insect, Brittany's hit landed on my left cheek. My face moved due to the force and I instantly tasted blood.
"We worked all morning non-stop, we only took a break to rest. Why is it such a big deal?" My voice went a bit high as I spoke, tears already gathering in my eyes.
Seeing that a weak Omega dared to talk back at her, Brittany slapped me again and this time, the force sent me to the ground.
As she started to grab my hair to slap me again, Natalie started to growl.
She was ready to attack Brittany as she couldn't stand her ceaselessly abusing me.
"Natalie, ignore her. You don't have to fight, please."
I began pleading with Natalie. If a fight should break out between them, she would most likely be at the losing end because even though Brittany was not as strong as her, she was the Alpha's daughter.
Natalie was always ready to defend and fight for me. In the past, she suffered a lot because of me. Aside from bearing the cursed tag just for hanging out with me, she also partook in some of my punishments for standing up for me.
I didn't want anything to hinder our departure from the pack tomorrow, so I despairingly held Natalie back, seeing that my words were not pacifying her.
Her growls increased and even though Brittany tried so hard to hide it, fear was written all over her demeanor.
Reluctantly, she grabbed a handful of my hair and started to pull me up, raising her hand to hit me again.
At this point, Natalie couldn't stand it anymore as she tore free from my grip and charged at Brittany with the speed of lightning, dragging her off me and slamming her into the wall.
"Natalie, no!" I screamed, trying to stop the fight.
Brittany stretched her hand to scratch her but Natalie slapped it away and held her head, running her face sharply through the wall.
Brittany's face instantly reddened but she charged toward Natalie again, trying to grip her hair. Natalie caught her hand this time and twisted it backward until her cries filled the compartment, she forcefully tilt her head and sunk her fangs deep into Brittany neck flesh before letting her go.
Brittany dropped to the ground, her cries unending as the strong smell of her blood occupied the atmosphere.
She started screaming for help and kicking Natalie at the same time, causing Natalie to get angry all over and charge at her again.
"Natalie, we have to get out of here!" I tried to separate the two, when the sound of approaching footsteps drove sharply into my ears.
I froze. Recognition hitting me like a wave. Fear enveloping me.
He's here.
"Natalie, please stop. We have to leave now!" I kept saying while pulling her at the same time.
"Natalie--
Derek Stones, Brittany's brother, and future Alpha of the Crimson Pack reached the scene with his guards before I could do anything. My breathing hitched as I stepped back, momentarily staring away from his burning gaze.
Immediately, the guards stepped in and tore Natalie off, helping Brittany to her feet.
Natalie was now calm but I could see the fear emanating from her gaze.
"What happened here?" Derek bellowed, murderously glaring at me.
Dramatically, Brittany's burst into wails, her chest falling and rising heavily as she pointed an accusing finger at me.
"She caused it! She started it. Just because I corrected her for a wrongdoing, she ordered her friend to hit me. That cursed Omega put her hands on me! Look at my neck, she fuckin bit me!"
"What? That's a lie. You started it, you slapped me first and abused us."
"Now, she's calling me a liar," Brittany further wailed. "You pathetic bitch!"
"But you're not telling him the truth--
"Enough!" Derek thundered, putting his arm around Brittany and drawing her protectively to his side while glaring murderously at me.
"You, how dare you call her a liar," Derek lashed his voice at me, "and telling your accomplice to hit her, are you crazy?!"
Derek's eyes were filled with contempt and hatred. At this point, I knew my defense was futile. What was I expecting, that he would believe me over his sister?
A cursed Omega?
Even if he knew she was in the wrong, Derek would ignore it as long as I was involved. He would take the chance to watch me suffer.
While I was just a cursed helpless Omega, Brittany was the Alpha's daughter. They were powerful wolves.
All my life, I had hoped for a day that I would be considered, trusted, and not taken for granted because of my position.
But now I knew better. That day would never exist. Brittany was right. I'm a slave who deserved to be trampled on and made to work tirelessly until my death. This was my fate. The life of an Omega.
A tear slid down my cheek and I hastily wiped it off.
I felt Natalie's palm comfortingly intertwining with mine but I gently brushed it off and fell to my knees.
"I apologize, future Alpha Derek. Brittany is right, I was wrong for calling her a liar. We never should have fought her, we should have remembered our places. We're just slaves and nothing compared to you. Please pardon us just this once with your subtle heart."
I rubbed my palms together as I begged. Reluctantly, Natalie fell to her knees beside me.
"She's right. But it was all my fault, it was me who hit Brittany and for this, I apologize. It will never happen again," she said with a grudge.
"No," Derek said after a brief silence and my gaze went up to meet him, "your apologies are not accepted."
My heart leapt into my mouth, rendering me speechless.
"No one raises their hands on the Alpha's daughter and live, especially mere servants," he bellowed.
"Please," I started to shake my head ferociously when he began walking towards Natalie, "please, no."
Natalie shuddered as he easily grabbed her off the floor and pulled her away from me.
"Please let her go. Please, I beg you!" Tears streamed down her face. "It was all my fault, I started it so please take me instead. Please let her go and take me instead.." my cries fell on deaf ears and Derek handed Natalie to his guards.
"Behead her on the stake and light her body up," he ordered brutally.
"No!"
Brittany's wail increased again, fueling her brother's wrath. "Ah! It hurts so bad!"
I found a smirk tugging at her lips. The bite on her neck was healing fast since she was of the Alpha's bloodline but Brittany didn't stop her false wailing.
I knew she was trying to get her brother to not change his mind and it worked perfectly. The guards began dragging Natalie away.
I immediately crawled to Derek and held his foot, "please kill me instead. I'm telling you it was all me, Natalie did nothing. I instigated it all, so please just kill me instead."
"You crossed the line this time, Omega." He hollered at me. "I gave you so many chances but you just had to go past your limit."
Natalie's increasingly distant pleas drove into my ears and I held tighter onto Derek's leg, restricting his movement.
One glance at Brittany's face told me begging her was a helpless cause, so I turned to Derek again, resting my forehead on his shoe.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry, please spare my friend's life. Give me one more chance, just this once I beg you, I'll do anything you want. I'll be more faithful to you, I'll give you anything, just please spare her life." sweat mixed with tears and mucus smeared my face but I made no move to wipe it off.
"No more chances for you, Omega. Because of you, your friend will die. I hope this shows you not to cross your limit next time."
Derek said and kicked me hard in the face, my upper lip tore open and started to bleed.
I tumbled over and while I struggled to get up, Derek walked away with Brittany.
Natalie's voice continued to echo in the hall as I got up on my feet.
I have to save her!
I raced down the hall and stopped at the exit. I tilt my head forward, trying to catch her sound.
"Nat!" I loosely fisted my hand over my mouth and yelled. "Natalie!"
"Save me, El. Please, save me."
Faintly, I caught the sound of her voice.
Meticulously, I began trailing it and it led me toward the exit of the hotel. I swung the door open and was about to run out when I bumped into someone.
I staggered, caught my balance quickly, and started for the door again but my legs subjectively stopped when my path got obstructed.
Nat's voice started to get weak and distant,, her scent fading.
Paula's gaze was blazing as she stood in my path, "Where the hell do you think you're going during work hours?!"
