Chapter 1 Rejected

Sara glanced up at the moon. It was a full moon tonight. She looked around at the crowd that had gathered around the large bonfire. It was the fourth full moon of the year meaning it was time for the mating ceremony. Sara sighed and offered a silent prayer to the moon goddess.

"Please moon goddess, let it be my turn this time. Please let me find my mate today and I promise to leave you offerings for an entire year"

She prayed. Sara took a glance at the moon again and hoped the moon goddess had heard her. Since she had come of age at 18, Sara had not found her mate. Now she was 24 and while it was not a taboo, her case was a bit special. Sara walked towards the crowd as the ceremony was about to start. On sighting her, a group of people who stood nearby shared point looks and moved away, whispering. Sara sighed. It was nothing new, her pack had always been hostile towards her.

Not only was Sara unmated, she was also wolfless. This led to many rumors about her within the pack especially as her parents had died mysteriously when she was younger. No one wanted to associate with her as everyone believed she was cursed. This was one of the reasons Sara prayed hard for a mate, she needed a mate to fill her lonely life. Although she wasn't sure if they would be someone in the pack who would be willing to be with her despite the rumors, Sara could only hope and pray.

"The Alpha has arrived!", a loud voice announced and Sara raised her head immediately, trying as much as the rest of the crowd to catch a glimpse of their alpha.

Zayne was quite young and had just taken over as alpha of the pack, at age 25 following the death of his father. But even though he was young, Zayne had already proven times without number that he was capable of leading. He had caught the most game at hunts, led the most successful expeditions, he was practically born to be the alpha hence why the pack loved him so much. Of course it also helped with the eligible female werewolves that he was incredibly handsome.

Standing at 5"9 ft tall, Zayne was easily the most handsome man in the Red Moon pack. He had long wavy Hercules gold hair. His pair of bushy eyebrows sat on top of his doe shaped mirthful eyes that seemed to sparkle. In between his eyes was a falcon's nose that completed his incredible looks. He was the dream of all the unmated female werewolves. Sara couldn't dare to dream that high, she only hoped to find someone kind and warm.

Alpha Zayne sat on his chair at the podium in front of the bonfire and gave his go ahead for the ceremony to begin. There was a display of activities from dancing to a fire show that left everyone awed. Then as the moon began to reach it's peak there was an unspoken anticipation in the air as almost all the unmated werewolves began to shift excitedly. Sara shared in this anticipation as well. Soon enough, the moon priestess arrived at the gathering followed by her attendants.

The moon priestess walked to the middle of the gathering and raised her hand. A hush fell over the crowd as everybody watched her excitedly.

"Red Moon pack! I bring again to you tonight the moon goddess wishes for us", she said in a gentle voice that carried across the crowd.

"And I have good news, for tonight, the moon goddess has finally revealed to me who she wishes for our great alpha to take as his mate and the Luna of this pack", She announced and immediately there was a rumble of excitement.

All the unmated werewolves whispered excitedly amongst themselves, who would be the alpha's mate? Zayne himself shifted forward on his chair, his expression the same but the anticipation in his eyes was unmistakable. The moon priestess began to perform her rituals and incantations, swaying as she said the words. Everyone in the field watched silently with apprehension. Suddenly the moon priestess stopped and snapped her head in Sara's direction. She seemed to be staring straight at Sara but that was impossible... wasn't it?

The moon priestess began to walk towards where Sara stood with the rest of the crowd. She stopped just a few feet away.

"You", the moon priestess said calmly staring pointedly at Sara, their gaze interlocked.

It took a minute before Sara realized that the moon priestess was actually talking to her. She looked around and everyone was staring at her.

"M.. Me?", Sara asked uncertainly.

"Yes you, come forward", the moon priestess, hand stretched outwards.

Sara looked around hesitantly before finally walking forward. The moon priestess led her to the middle of the field and Sara fidgeted nervously. She could feel the intensity of the gazes on her.

"What is your name, child?", the moon priestess asked Sara.

"Sara", she managed to answer softly.

"Hm, Sara", the moon priestess nodded.

"And are you unmated Sara?", the moon priestess asked her.

"Yes", Sara nodded.

"Which means if the moon goddess has chosen a mate for you tonight, you would accept?", the moon priestess asked.

Sara drew in a sharp breath,

"Yes", she managed to nod shakily.

The moon priestess nodded satisfactorily. Sara was extremely nervous, this couldn't be what she thought it was, right? She mustered up her courage and sneaked a peek at Zayne. Zayne was watching the scene, his expression still the same except now there was a small frown on his face.

"People of the Red Moon pack", the moon priestess began gently.

"I bring to you the moon goddess' wishes...", She continued as she took Sara's hand.

"The person she has chosen to be the mate of our alpha, the future Luna of...."

"Stop this atrocity at once!", a voice boomed suddenly and Sara let out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding. She looked towards the source of the voice, the podium where one of the council members stood up and was staring at her angrily.

"Tell me, moon priestess is this a joke?", the council member asked angrily.

"I do not joke with my duties", the moon priestess answered calmly.

"Then how could you even think of naming this... this... cursed child our alpha's mate!", he asked spitefully.

Sara drew in a sharp breath. There was a rumble of loud whispers in the crowd now.

"It is the wish of the moon goddess", the moon priestess answered calmly.

"That's preposterous!", the council member spat angrily and there was a small uproar in the crowd.

"Are you disregarding the wishes of the moon goddess? Or is it my words you do not trust?", the moon priestess asked him calmly but the aura around her had suddenly become cold.

"Forgive my council member, wise moon priestess, he doesn't mean it that way", Zayne said standing up. The entire field fell silent.

"We always trust and hope for the moon goddess' guidance and we are ever grateful for you who relays her wishes to us", Zayne continued as he walked towards Sara and the moon priestess. His tone was gentle yet firm.

He stopped a few feet from where they stood and glanced briefly at Sara before looking at the moon priestess.

"However, I believe I can reject this?", he asked the moon priestess squarely.

Sara's blood ran cold.

"Yes. While the moon goddess lets her wishes known to us, she only seeks to guide us. Ultimately we can make our own choices", the moon priestess answered.

Sara's heartbeat quickened, her head swarmed as there was a rise of whispers in the field. She looked at the crowd and they were all staring at her, some even sneering, suddenly she felt claustrophobic. Sara found it hard to breathe as her head swirled, she could barely register the words Zayne was saying.

"I, Zayne, Alpha of the Red Moon pack, reject you, Sara, as my mate. I hereby severe our mate bond and declare our ties broken"

The next thing Sara felt was a sharp searing pain in her chest as her heart broke into pieces.

Chapter 2 Mate

Sara couldn't remember how she ended up leaving the mating ceremony. After the sharp pain in her chest as a result of Zayne severing the bond, all she felt was her legs leading her away, away from the bonfire, away from Zayne, away from all the stares, all she knew was that she needed to get away.

Sara pushed through the crowd, desperate to leave, desperate to breath. In her half dazed state, she realized someone standing in front of her, blocking her way. She looked up and saw Savannah and her gang of friends staring down at her sneeringly.

Savannah had been one of those who was the most hostile to Sara in the pack. Her father was a high ranking member of Zayne's council so she usually got away with everything. She had been Sara's worst nightmare right from when she was 18 when her wolf had failed to manifest. She never failed to taunt and mock Sara and it seemed that was her plan now.

"Guys, look at her, she's in tears", Savannah mocked and her friends laughed.

"No way, you didn't really think our great alpha would accept you as his mate, did you?", Hannah asked her jeeringly.

Sara couldn't reply. She blinked back the tears.

"What? Did you think you would become Luna? And we would all bow to you? You? A cursed wolfless werewolf who even killed her own parents?", Savannah spat spitefully and Sara couldn't take it anymore.

She pushed Savannah out of the way and ran. She ran as fast as her legs could carry her, eager to get away from it all. From dull stinging ache in her chest, from Savannah's words. As she ran the tears poured freely. Sara ran into the forest and finally stopped running when she felt her legs were about to give out. She crumbled on the floor and began to cry, she cried her heart out while questioning the moon goddess.

When she turned 18 and her wolf did not manifest as it should have, Sara had spent her days crying and begging the moon goddess to give her a wolf. As the years passed and no hope of her having a wolf presented itself Sara slowly let it go. Even when her parents had died before that in circumstances she herself couldn't remember clearly, she had also let it go. Now the one thing, the one thing she so desperately wanted, even this the moon goddess could not grant her. Maybe she really was cursed. Sara sat there and cried for a long time. After a while when she had calmed down, she stood up to return home when she suddenly heard a snap.

Sara turned around cautiously. This wasn't the first time she had come to this part of the forest she used to come here a lot whenever she had a lot on her mind but recently she had heard rumors that it had become increasingly unsafe because of rogue wolves. Sara studied her surroundings carefully and cautiously. There was no one. Had she just imagined it? Just as she was about to calm down, she heard the same sound again. This time when Sara turned she saw two werewolves emerge from behind the bushes. Sara could immediately tell that they were rogues. She had been unprepared and unable to hide so when they looked towards her direction they saw her standing out there in the open, shocked, like a deer caught in the headlights. They began to advance towards her menacingly as Sara began to back away. As they advanced towards her, they growled softly, sending shivers down Sara's spine. They snapped at her and Sara broke into a run, they immediately began to chase her.

Sara panted heavily as she ran through the forest. The rogues were fast catching up to her. When Sara turned around her to look she didn't see the twig in front of her, she tripped on it and landed on the floor. Seeing Sara on the floor, the rogues slowed down and advanced towards her slowly. Sara tried to get up but was brought back down by a sharp pain, she had twisted her ankle. The wolves, seeing that Sara was defenseless, growled and continued advancing towards her. One of the wolves jumped at her and Sara closed her eyes shut waiting for the pain that was to come but it never did. Sara opened her eyes slowly to see the rogues struggling with another wolf, a bigger wolf. This wolf was fiercer and by far stronger. He threw the rogues around with such ease that Sara was stunned. The wolf turned around to look at her briefly and Sara saw that it had the most piercing blue eyes. The wolf turned it's attention back to the rogues and Sara watched the fight with awe. One of the rogues seeing that the new wolf was occupied with its friend inched towards Sara. Sara did not see the rogue coming and neither did the blue eyed wolf. The next thing Sara felt was a searing pain in her leg where the rogue had bit her. Sara let out a sharp scream alerting the blue eyed wolf who immediately rushed towards the second rogue and flung him away from Sara. After the attack on Sara, the blue eyed wolf seemed to become more fiercer and angrier as he tossed the two wolves around violently before finally finishing them off. As awed as Sara was by the blue eyed wolf she couldn't really focus on the latter part of their fight as her mind was reeling with the searing pain from where the wolf had bit her. She suddenly felt very dizzy but then the blue eyed wolf began to change into its human form and before Sara stood one of the most handsome men she had ever seen. He was so well built and good looking.

As he began to walk towards Sara, she whimpered and struggled to move backwards. As handsome as he was and despite the fact that he had just helped her, this strange man exuded an intensely dark and cold aura that Sara couldn't help but be scared of him. Unfortunately with her ankle twisted and the pain from the werewolf bite searing through her, there was no way for her to escape. Sara sat there watching the man as he walked towards her, unable to move, her vision becoming increasingly blurry and her headache getting more intense.

"No....", Sara whimpered.

"No, please.... please", Sara pleaded but he didn't stop.

Sara tried to stand up but the sharp pain from her ankle brought her back down. The man stopped and crouched down in front of her. He stared at her intensely and Sara shrunk back under his gaze. Her head was now swarming and her vision had become increasingly blurry. As she swooned and fainted, she was fairly sure she heard the stranger growl,

"Mate"

Chapter 3 Failed Escape

Sara's eyes fluttered open slowly. The stream of sunlight from the window beside her made it a bit hard for her to see at first and she had to blink a few times in order to get her eyes used to the room. Sara looked round, she was lying down on a king sized bed in the middle of a large room. The room was tastefully decorated although in an ancient style, it was quite luxurious. Sara tried to think back to how she got here and she remembered the attack in the forest. She remembered the rogue wolves she had encountered and the....

Sara's mind was immediately on alert.

'That's right!', she thought to herself.

'The silver streaked wolf who had saved her. Where was he? Was he the one who had brought her here?', Sara asked herself.

She looked down at her leg and saw it was bandaged where the rogue wolf had bit her.

'Had the blue eyed wolf bandaged her up?'

Just as all these questions were swimming through Sara's mind, the door suddenly opened and a woman walked in.

The woman looked around the same age as Sara, she walked in holding a bowl of water and a piece of cloth, wearing what she assumed was a maid's uniform. Sara watched as the maid paused momentarily when she noticed Sara staring at her.

"My lady, you're awake", the maid said as she began to advance towards Sara in hurried footsteps.

Sara struggled to sit up.

"Who are you? Where am I?", Sara asked, eyeing the woman warily as she approached.

"My lady please don't sit up, you need to rest", the maid said as she tried to help Sara lie down again but Sara stubbornly shook her off.

"Where am I? How did I get here?", Sara asked again, this time her tone sharper than before.

"My lady, don't worry, you are safe. You are in the alpha's palace", the maid answered her softly.

"The alpha's..."

'Zayne' was the first thing that came to her mind and Sara hated that it was. Zayne had just rejected her so there was no way he would show her this kind of hospitality. So that begged the question, if she wasn't in Zayne's palace, which alpha's palace was she in?

"Which pack is this?", Sara asked the woman.

"You are in the Blue Moon pack, my lady"

Sara blinked in surprise. 'The Blue Moon pack'?

"Hold on my lady, let me inform the alpha that you are awake", the maid told her and Sara stiffened.

Sara watched as the woman left the room, her mind descending into chaos. She had heard rumors of the Blue Moon pack and it's alpha. It was currently the strongest pack in the land and it's alpha was known to be ruthless and extremely powerful. Sara didn't know how she had gotten here but she knew that she needed to leave.

Sara stood up from the bed with much difficulty. Her leg was in pain but she didn't let that deter her. She got down from the bed and limped towards the door. She listened for any sounds coming from outside but there was none. She opened the door slowly and walked into the hallway. The hallway was large and quiet, there was no one in sight. Sara slowly began to make her way down the hallway. She limped and with each step she took, she felt a sharp sting of pain go through her but she didn't stop. She needed to leave this place. Sara walked on for close to ten minutes and thankfully didn't see anyone, however she was beginning to tire out and she still had not found the exit.

Sara took what seemed to be her tenth turn and yet it wasn't the exit. She was getting really tired by now. Just as she was wondering where to go from here and if she would really be able to escape from this place, she heard a sharp cry,

"My lady!", someone exclaimed and Sara froze in place.

Sara didn't need to turn around to know who it was and sure enough, the maid from her room earlier rushed to her side.

"What are you doing out of bed? Come, come you must rest", the maid said as she took Sara's arm.

Sara tried to struggle out of her grasp but her grip was gentle yet firm and she couldn't do anything but allow herself be led back to the room. Her legs were beginning to tire out anyway and she was still no closer to finding the exit.

Back in the room, the young maid helped Sara lay down on the bed. And although Sara was disappointed that she had not been able to escape, she was grateful to be back in bed again. Her legs hurt from walking for that long.

"Just rest my lady. The alpha will be here soon. Is there anything you want in the meantime?", the young maid asked her with a smile.

Just as Sara opened her mouth to respond, the door opened and he walked in. Sara couldn't help the gasp that escaped her, the man that walked into her room was extremely good looking.

He must have been at least 6ft tall with short jet black hair that was cut into a crew cut. On his face, he had Hades black eyebrows that gave him a cool look and a pair of saturn shaped eyes that were cold and dark. He also had arched cheekbones and a lantern jaw that was square and firm. His Atlas shoulders were broad and gave him an imposing look. And his eyes were the most enchanting blue Sara had ever seen.

It was him! He was the wolf who had saved her the previous night. She was already out of it when he changed back into his human form the previous night so she didn't remember much of how else he looked but those blue eyes were a striking dead give away.

Sara watched with anticipation and apprehension as her saviour walked towards her in long, firm strides, his eyes never leaving hers. He stopped a few feet from the bed and his gaze roamed over her as if assessing her. Their eyes met again and he turned to the maid.

"Leave us", he commanded, his tone soft yet firm.

The maid bowed.

"Yes, my alpha"

Sara's blood ran cold.
