Taming the grumpy boss heart

Olivia's POV

I groaned as I heard my phone beep; it was the Alarm I set yesterday; yes! Today is a big day for me, but for some reason, I wasn't pleased.

Memories I shared with Daniel came flashing, last night I wasted myself because I felt so heartbroken

I expected Daniel to cheer me up today, but no one was here, just me, in this house.

I dragged myself out of bed, reluctantly walked into the bathroom brushed my teeth and had a bath. I was feeling weak after yesterday's painful event. "Why," I said as a tear fell from my eyes

My head was aching after drinking so much alcohol yesterday. I found Daniel cheating on me with a blonde yesterday morning. Daniel knew how important this day was to me, yet he fucked me up

I was in so much pain and regretted ever going to his apartment to surprise him. I have an interview with a prestige company today. If I get a job in this company, I would never suffer again, and I and Daniel decided to celebrate it

"I promise to be there with you, and I will" Those were Daniel's words

"You're a total asshole; get your voice out of my head," I said as I stormed out of the bathroom and rubbed my lotion; I chose the outfit for the day.

"Ahhh, what exactly did Daniel want? I thought he loved and cherished me; I can't believe he did this to me," I said.

I stared at myself in the full-view mirror, wearing a black skirt and a pink long-sleeve shirt. I was proud of how I looked

I had practiced what to say today in my interview; since I graduated from school, I have been job hunting, but most of the jobs I saw didn't pay well, and Olivia being Olivia, would never settle for less

I walked out of my room and entered my sitting room; the whole place was empty, just me. Millions of memories began to flash in my head

After I was done with breakfast,I left the house and locked the door behind me. Reflecting on my life. I only knew a few things about my parents; my mother died while giving birth to me, and my father lives in a big town with his other family.

"I wish you could see me, Mom," I said; although I never knew my mother, I respected her for one thing, I am alive today because of her

"Babe, this isn't what you think", I recalled my ex-boyfriend, Daniel telling me.

"I can explain," he said and trailed behind her, but I didn't want to listen to his excuses

"I'm not blind; I know what I saw, and you can't convince me otherwise," I said

"What did you expect" Those words made me halt; I didn't understand what he said

"What did he mean?" I thought

"You gave me no reason to be loyal to you, we are in a relationship, but I don't know the color of your pant; you're so uptight, so I had to find someone else who would satisfy my needs," Daniel said, those words made my heart hurt, I didn't expect what I heard from him.

I forgot how to breathe and just froze for a moment. It was as if time stopped, but then I heard Daniel's voice again

"I couldn't break up with you because I didn't want to break your heart" At this moment, the dam broke; my eyes betrayed and I began to cry. With my back facing Daniel

I sobbed and ran out of the premises. "So pathetic," I thought. I couldn't believe he didn't break up with me because he pitied me.

My life was a hot mess, and my world was ending. I loved Daniel so much and ignored all the signs I got because I was head over heels for him.

Between my sobs, I remembered when I cried on his shoulders, how he comforted me and told me how special I was, but all those memories are now in the past. The problem was that we shared too many moments, and it felt like Daniel was already an essential part of my life. Today I was shattered

My dreams were crushed, and the fantasy world I built with Daniel was destroyed in that minute

I checked the time so that I wouldn't be late for my interview and there was still time. So, I sat on the couch in the living room as I remembered how I had shamed myself that day

"My good God," I said out loud as I recalled those embarrassing memories. Yes! Daniel was right, their relationship was a strange one, but it was like that only because I refused to sleep with him

"Babe, I promise it wouldn't hurt" Those were Daniel's words, but I refused, and looking back now, I felt like I wronged him, but I brushed the thought away

I believed I was perfect the way I was, but deep down, it felt like I was lying to myself

I stepped out of my house and waited for a taxi.

The taxi stopped in front of a big company; the view was magnificent. I couldn't give up my dream because of someone; moreover, I saw this as an opportunity to get Daniel off my mind

So, it was a big step for me. I sat down at the reception for a while, but no one attended to me

"Please, isn't it time for the interview," I asked, but the receptionist ignored my question. The girl looked at me from head to toe before focusing on her laptop.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket; I picked up the call; it was my friend from school, Martha, the one that told me about the job

Martha works at this company, and so she wanted to help me get the job

Reynolds Enterprises, people find it hard to secure a job in a company like this, but luckily for me, if my self-confidence didn't get me into the company, my friend's influence would, but I didn't want pity, so I was determined to get this job

Olivia's pov

My experience with Daniel was horrible, but I wouldn't let him or any other person dim my light

It got to my turn, and I walked into the room only to face my long-time crush, Ethan, the owner of Reynolds enterprise. I smiled

"Good morning, everyone", I began my presentation. Altogether they were four in the room

Ethan, a tall handsome man in his late twenties, with magnetic green eyes, and his hair was neatly combed to the side. He is the owner and CEO of the company. By Ethan's left, a beautiful girl sat beside him, she holds a strong position in the company, and for some reason, Ethan favored her

Many people in the company believed that it might be because Ethan's father and Vanessa's father are good friends; Vanessa has beautiful and sharp memorizing features, she has sensitive brown eyes and brunette hair, and her skin is soft and smooth. I definitely couldn't match with her

By Ethan's right sat a man in his late thirties, he was the most mature in the room, and I stood in front of all these people which high class and status. I couldn't match any of them

After I was done talking, a smile appeared on Ethan's face, and he was impressed. Vanessa noticed the smile on Ethan's face. She was surprised, she knew Ethan, and he hadn't smiled at anyone's performance before

Yes! She must admit, the girl's performance was terrific, but seeing Ethan's expression made her jealous, and right now, she sees Olivia as a threat

"That was very nice," Ethan said

"Thank you, sir" I could feel the heat on my cheeks; I couldn't believe my eyes and ears. I saw this as a good sign

"Oh God, please let me find favor in their eyes", I prayed

"You know the position you're applying for, right?" Vanessa said

"Yes ma'am", I replied

"Ok, I've seen your qualifications, and we will get back to you," The man in his late thirties said.

"Ok, thank you", I replied before walking out of the room

Vanessa eyed me as I walked out of the room; she didn't want me to get the job because she saw me as a threat,

but the final decision was not hers. Ethan makes the rules and employs whoever he wants to employ

Usually, he doesn't appear at any of these interviews, but the person that gets this job would be working as his assistant, so he didn't want to employ beauty and status; he wants to hire someone with brains

I got out of the room and saw Martha pacing,

"Oh my goodness, how was it," Martha asked as soon as she saw me walk out of the room

"It was fine; you didn't tell me I'd see the CEO," I said

"Well, I didn't know too, and I wouldn't be able to help you with anything," Martha said

"I already told you, Martha, I'm fine, and I don't need you to help me do anything; I'm fine on my own," I said

"You've always been like this, and I believe, but just in case you don't get this job, you can..."

"Stop this. No more negativity," I said and waved Martha goodbye before going home

I got home and hurried to my bedside where I kept my diary. It was a beautiful notebook; I wrote my bucket list here and hoped for God to help me get this job

Ethan's POV

Back at Reynolds Enterprises office..........

After the countless people they saw today, they were all tired

"I like the pale skin girl who wore a pink long sleeve for the interview today; I'm bored of all these interviews," Ethan said as he walked out of the room to see a line of people who are here for the same job offer

So sad for them. I had already picked someone else, and Vanessa and Andrew will have to attend to every soul here

"So pathetic," I thought and went back to my office; I had a pile of work waiting for me, and this was one of the many times I needed a personal assistant so bad

I picked up my phone and dialed Vanessa, "I want that girl to start working here tomorrow", I said and hung up the call. I didn't bother to say hello, nor did I bother to listen to her reply

I knew I had good looks and status; I could have everything he wanted, and that was the best part of life for him. Although I didn't have any purpose to be happy, I was just a regular guy, but this regular guy was born into wealth, and I was able to achieve something great at this age

A knock on the door pulled my attention from my laptop to the door

"Come in," I said. Vanessa's hand pushed the door open as she made her way into the room

"Ethan, do you think employing that girl as your PA would be nice" She started but received no response from Ethan

"I mean, she has low status and ... And..." Vanessa searched for words she could use to downgrade Olivia, but she found none

I shifted my gaze from the laptop to Vanessa

"Are you questioning me?" I asked as I raised an eyebrow. Vanessa found him more attractive right now

"No, no, I'm not, but..."

"Then it is final; she'll start working here tomorrow," I said. Vanessa stood on the spot observing the handsome yet arrogant Ethan.

"Don't you have work to do?" I said, cutting Vanessa off from her world of fantasy.

"Yes, I'm sorry," Vanessa said as she turned to the door and walked out of it

Vanessa has had a crush on Ethan for years, and she finds everything he does attractive and cool

"Call the girl and inform her that she's hired," Vanessa said as she got out of the elevator,

"Ok, ma," The man in his thirties said. Everyone in the office respected Vanessa because they assumed that she was closer to Ethan than anyone else

Olivia's POV

"Hello," I said as I picked up the call,

"Oh my God, ok," I said after I heard what the person at the other end of the call said

After the call ended, she jumped up in excitement

"Thank Goodness", I jumped in excitement; I picked up my phone again and dialed Martha's number

"I was hired" I screamed; my phone was on speaker,

"What!" Martha said in disbelief; I am sure she didn't expect that Ethan would hire me because Ethan has the high taste and wants the best

"You must be talented," Martha said,

"I can't believe this. This calls for celebration," Martha said

"Yes", I agreed in excitement

"I'll come over to your place after work," Martha said before she hung up

I was excited, this meant a new beginning, and my life was about to change. With this job, I could be the independent woman I wished for, and the excitement overwhelmed me so much that I stopped thinking of Daniel for the moment

I opened my wardrobe, checking for what I could wear to the evening out with Martha

After four hours, Martha drove over to pick her up from her house

"You're so lucky, girl" Those were Martha's first words as soon as she saw me

"I know. It all happened in s day", I responded

"I bet you impressed him," Martha said. She knew her boss and what he could do; Ethan was a no-nonsense man. He could get you fired quickly, and there's nothing you could do about it,

"Is there anything you think I should know before working in the company? You know how I'm working for the CEO as his PA?" I said I knew Martha would be of help to me, and it would be great if she asked a senior staff about the rules of the place

"Em... Well, you must be careful around Ethan, he hates nonsense, and he loves punctuality and commitment," Martha said

"Who wouldn't like punctuality and commitment? I know that already," I said and paused

"Is there anything you know that I could do to impress my boss so that I can keep my job? You know I practiced my performance for days, but I can't practice my everyday movement before I go to work?" I said

"Yeah, you're right," Martha said and turned to take a glance at my face briefly

"I believe you can do all things, a lot of people came for the interview today, but you were given that position, and I bet you've already impressed him," Martha said, but she got no reply from Olivia

"Just make no mistake, he hates mistakes," Martha said, and that word rang into Olivia's ear

"I'm very clumsy, Martha," I said

"Well, try not to be clumsy and be you because you're perfect in being you," Martha said as the car came to a halt in a big mall

"Let's buy you working clothes and other accessories," Martha said.

"Oh my goodness Martha, thank you so much. Do not worry. When I start working and earning my money, I will take you out shopping, too," I said

"You don't have to do that," Martha said

"No, Martha, you've been so kind to me, and I don't know how I can thank you," I said

"Ok, let's say you owe me a favor, and if I need your help with something, you promise to help me," Martha said

"Yes, I promise to help you, I Pinky finger swear," I said, and we walked into the mall together. I shopped for beautiful gowns and cooperated wear for the office

While shopping, Martha stared at me for several minutes

"What is it, Martha? You've been staring at me for quite some time now. Is there anything that you'd love to tell me," I asked

"Olivia, I'm just glad you could get over Daniel" Those words were like bee stings; the thought of Daniel came into her mind again

Martha saw my sudden change of mood

"I'm sorry if I reminded you of him again," she said

"No, its fine, but I just can't get it. I mean, yes, I now know what Daniel wanted, but I thought we had a genuine relationship," I said

"I guess he wasn't with you for any genuine reason. He just wanted you to cause of your body," Martha said

"And here I was, thinking he truly loved me. Martha, you would not believe it If I told you that I even dreamt that he proposed to me and we became a couple," I said

"I'm so sorry, Olivia," Martha said to comfort me, but it didn't work. I found it hard to shift my attention away from Daniel again

"Like... How did he pretend to love me this while" I said

"I don't know either, and it surprises me", I added

"Martha", Olivia called

"Daniel made me feel like I was worth nothing in this world; his voice lurks, I hear him saying that any guy would cheat on me, and I can't be in a relationship and be undefiled," I said

"But you know that's not true; you're perfect being you. You got a job that people are dying to get, be yourself, Olivia," Martha said, but those words were empty to me; I just smiled back at Martha

After spending an hour shopping, Martha dropped me at home

My alarm rang again; today was a new day, not just any new day but my first day at work. I was excited and overwhelmed. I stood up from my bed and jumped right into the bathroom to shower and brush my teeth, and then prepared my breakfast

I picked my bag up from the table and hurried out of the house; Martha had promised to give me a ride to work

"Good morning, sunshine," Martha said as soon as her eyes caught mine,

"Good morning, Martha; thank you for coming over to pick me up," I said with a smile on my face
