The room was dark and cold. Kate sat in a corner, shivering with fear. There was a pungent smell of rusted iron and she could hear drops of water in the room. Why did they bring her here? Was she going to be killed?. She never imagined dying this way. Different thoughts kept swirling in her mind, as tears flowed down her eyes.
Why was this happening to her? Was it one of her father's debtors? At the moment, Kate could only think of that explanation..
"Is anybody there? Help me! '' She tried to yell, but her voice came out as almost a whisper, quivering. "Nobody is coming to save you, so be quiet!" A deep, bitter voice replied to Kate, which made her more afraid.
l
"Please, sir, let me go. I didn't do anything," she pleaded, in between her tears.
"Shut up!, before I shut you up!" He yelled, and she shifted back towards the wall, whimpering. "Tell that to the boss when he gets here!" He added. She stopped talking, afraid of what he would do to her if she continued. The door opened after what felt like an eternity, making Kate squint at the sudden light.
A man stood at the entrance, talking to the man who brought her there. She couldn't hear clearly what they were saying, but Kate knew they were talking about her, as they fixed both their gazes on her. "It's time to go!" the man who just came said to her, "Where are you taking me?" She asked, fear etched on her face.
"Just get up and stop asking questions!" He answered angrily, dragging her by her arm. The grip he held on her arm was tight and painful as he dragged Kate through a hallway. How was she going to escape from here? She wondered
There were guards everywhere.
Kate was at home earlier in the afternoon when two men came barging into her house. They dragged her out without explaining why. Despite her efforts to resist, they subdued her effortlessly and bound her hands and legs. She was blindfolded and taken to a dark, cold room. Kate had lost track of time but thought she had been in there almost a day. She felt more afraid because she had no family who would look for her.
She didn't have friends either, as she was always moving from one city to another, running away from all her late parents' debtors. They finally arrived at a door. The man knocked slightly on the door and After a few seconds, the door opened, and they dragged Kate in.
Two more men were in the room. They stood on the left and right side of the room. Her eyes wandered futher into the dimly lit room, till it landed on a figure.
A man, who was tall and had a dark aura coming from him, stood facing the window. Was he the boss? She wondered, still fear-stricken. They dragged her further into the room, till she stood a few steps away from the mysterious man.
"Leave" his deep, cold voice, which sent an icy shiver down her spine, resonated through the room. The next second, all the men left, leaving both of them alone in the room. He turned around and gazed at Kate with a deep frown on his face. He was handsome or rather stunning, his black hair was not short or long.
He had deep blue eyes that looked like they held a lot of deep hidden secrets. He also had this aura around him that made Kate feel intimidated.
Ethan walked towards where she was standing, her eyes were on the floor. He stood two feet away from her before walking to a table where a bottle of whiskey was.
He poured himself a glass and turned towards Kate. "Do you want a drink?" he asked her, with an icy voice that gave her goosebumps. The word "no'' came out of her mouth as almost a whisper. How could he be asking her if she wanted a drink?, was he alright?.
He walked to his chair and sat down, still gazing intently at her. Kate stood there waiting for what he was going to say next, but he said nothing.
He sipped his drink, gazing intently at her. This made her much more nervous and scared. Should she have spoken up or asked questions to understand the reason for her being brought here, but She was too fear stricken to utter a word, afraid of what he may do to her if said the wrong thing.
"Do you know who I am?" He asked, after gazing at her for a long time. Kate shook her head, trying to control the tears threatening to fall from her eyes. "You will know who I am soon," he added, swirling the glass in his hand. Was he going to let her go? She thought, her mind was in complete chaos.
"Sir, pl.. please le.. let me go'' she stuttered, trying to plead for her freedom.
His frown deepened, as Kate continued with her pleading, "I'm sure you have the wrong person sir, please let me go and I won't tell the police about what happened today," she said with all the courage she could gather.
The next moment he burst out laughing, Kate stood there gazing at him confused, why was he laughing?
Kate was sure what she said wasn't funny at all. He stopped laughing, his expression changed, and she felt her body go rigid. He had a deadly look on his face. She looked down, immediately avoiding eye contact with him. "Your father is Nicholas, right?" He asked sharply. Kate looked up at him wide-eyed.
She was right. He was one of her father's debtors. "Sir, I promise to pay back all the money he owes you. Please let me go,'' she begged, sobbing.
"He owes me something more than money," he said, standing up and walking towards Kate. What was he talking about? Something more than money? what has her father done this time?, was this finally going to be the end for her?.
Kate moved back as he moved closer to her, she looked around for an escape route but found none. She continued moving till her back was touched the wall behind her. There was no place to hide from his body, overshadowing hers. The next second, his hand flew to her and he started choking her.
Ethan held her neck, choking her, but not enough to joll her. Kate couldn't breathe. She attempted to break free from the tight hold on her neck, but he was too powerful.. She didn't stand a chance. She could already feel her eyes closing. Was she dying already? Before she could succumb to the darkness, Ethan let go of her neck and she felt life come back to her.
Kate fell to the ground, gasping and coughing. Was he baffling? Yes. Ethan looked at her with so much disdain in his eyes, that made her skin crawl. What did her father do to him for her to deserve all this? Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring her eyesight. "Take her out of here!" He yelled, and his men came running from outside the door. They took her arm and started to drag her out.
"No, please! Please let me go! I'm sorry!" Kate screamed as uncontrollable tears left her eyes. He didn't even spare a glance at her. They took her back to the same cold room as before and locked her in. Kate banged on the iron door crying and wailing, hoping they would have pity and let her go, but she couldn't hear a sound.
she moved back and sat in the corner, whimpering. Why was this happening to her? Why does she have to pay for her father's mistake?
She had no idea what he even did for her to deserve all this. Kate cried till she fell asleep on the cold floor. When she woke up, her stomach was growling. She was dragged out of her house before eating anything. Along with that, she was cold and thirsty. She stood up, feeling weak from exerting herself while crying.
The room was still dark, but she could locate where the door was. "Is someone out there?!" she inquired while banging on the door again. she couldn't bear the hunger she was feeling anymore.
"What do you want!" finally came a harsh reply.
"I need to go to the bathroom," she lied. A minute later, someone unlocked the door..
"Follow me," the bulky man from before said. She followed him without uttering a word.
This was her chance to escape from here. Kate looked around, trying to find a way. There was a window at the side of the wall, but she couldn't go closer to check which floor she was on. the man was holding her arm tightly.
They finally got to a door, which she assumed was the bathroom. "You have two minutes," he said coldly to her.
Kate entered one of the most spacious and beautiful bathrooms she had ever seen in her entire life.
She didn't realize when the word "wow", left her mouth, the bathroom was bigger than her entire house. He must be very rich for his bathroom to look this way, she thought. She shook her head, trying to get her mind back on track. She didn't have time to admire the bathroom. Kate needed to look for how to escape.
Quickly, she walked to the bathroom window but immediately felt disappointed as it was much higher than she thought..
Kate stood on her tiptoe, trying to see if she could fit through the window. She realized that she could fit in, but she couldn't pass through the window. If she did, she would end up falling to her death, as it was on the third or fourth floor. Kate sighed. She felt her hope to drain.
Kate heard a loud bang on the door. "Time's up! Come out or I'm coming in," the man warned
Kate waited for a few seconds more, trying to comfort herself, before coming out. He dragged her back to the room and locked the door. After staying there for a few more hours. Her lips became chapped from thirst and she was so famished, her stomach growling uncontrollably.
She heard the door unlocking. What now? Will they finally let her go? The same man as before walked in and dragged her up. They walked back towards Ethan's study, and Kate's heart began palpitating with fear. Why were they going there? Would he choke her to death this time? They reached the study door and walked past it. She sighed in relief.
If they were not going there, then where was he taking her? She wondered, looking back at Ethan's study. They finally arrived at another room, where three women were waiting. "Clean her up," he said to the oldest of the three. Kate stared at him, confused, cleaning her up. Why?. The woman came closer to Kate and started to take her clothes off. "Stop! no!" kate yelled trying to stop her, but the remaining two held her down.
They finally stripped Kate of her last piece of clothing. She stood in front of them, beyond embarrassed, trying to cover her naked body. "Why are you doing this to me?" she asked the woman, as tears rolled down her eyes. The older woman ignored her question and signaled for the two other women to drag her into the bathroom. In the bathroom, they washed Kate with different scented soap and they later applied perfume oil on her body.
Kate was tired of dragging by then. After cleaning her, they brought out several dresses. "Try these on," The woman said, handing Kate a dress. She was hesitant at first, but when they tried to dress her, Kate stood up reluctantly and tried the dress on. It was a beautiful floral dress with short sleeves. It was above her knee a little and hugged her body in the right places.
The woman inspected Kate from head to toe and she shook her head to show that she didn't like the dress. She had Kate try on two more dresses before they were finally satisfied with the last one. They led Kate out of the room towards another part of the house. She was beyond exhausted as she walked, her head was bent down.
When Kate raised her head up she was astonished when they walked into a magnificent living room, with different beautiful paintings on the wall. She looked up at the high ceiling, which had an elegant chandelier in the middle. Just one look left Kate in complete awe. The interior was dominated with White and gold.
She couldn't help but gawk at it in awe. Strangely, there were no pictures on the wall, which she found odd. They finally arrived at a elegant dining room, which had similar interior as the Living room.
Different delicacies were served on the large mahogany table. The delicious aroma hit Kate's nose and her stomach reacted to it instantly. The woman gestured for Kate to sit down and she did, wondering why they brought her there.
She was so hungry; it was taking her all the self-control she had, not to devour the food on the table.
She closed her eyes. She shouldn't eat in the place they held her captive. What if someone poisoned the food?. Kate sat there staring at the mouth-watering food, almost tearing up.
A minute later, the door to the dining room opened and Ethan, the man who almost choked her to death earlier, walked in. Her heart stopped as fear gripped her.
She was expecting him to come, but when she saw him. she couldn't help but feel fear.
Ethan walked in and sat at the head of the table, without glancing at her. Kate's heart was still palpitating with fear. He finally lifted his eyes and gazed at her for some seconds, before looking away.
"Eat," he said sharply, as he started eating. Kate was sure now that the food wasn't poisoned, but she still didn't want to eat. They took her against her will. He made people that she didn't know clean and dressed her up, after locking her up for almost a day. She almost starved to death.
Does he expect her to eat like nothing happened?. Ethan stopped eating when he realized she wasn't. "Is the food not to your taste?" Ethan inquired, waiting for her response. He talked like nothing had happened between them in his study and she was just a guest.
"Please, just let me go home," she spat out, tears escaping her eyes.
The next second, he grabbed her hand in a painful grip. "Eat or you won't like what I'm going to do to you!" He snapped, releasing her hand harshly. Kate held the hand and rubbed it. How could he be so harsh at her.
Kate hesitated for a bit before she started eating, as she was too hungry to resist eating and the way he stared at her made was also a reason. As the food entered her mouth, her eyes flew wide. It was much more delicious than she had imagined.
She continued to eat faster. The more she ate, the more delicious the food tasted. She stopped eating when she noticed him gazing at her. Why was he looking at her that way? .
Kate looked down at his plate and realized he barely touched his food. He was staring at her the whole time.
She looked down, avoiding his piercing gaze, which made her very uncomfortable.
"Where have you been hiding?" Ethan probed curiosity in his eyes. Kate looked up at him confused "Hiding?" She asked, what did he mean by hiding?
"Yes hiding, it took me a while to find you", he answered, Curiousity still in his eyes.
Why was he looking for her in the first place? She wondered. He must know that her parents passed away. She didn't have any money, she was dead broke.
Kate remembered he said something about her dad owing him something more than money. She was sure it was something she couldn't pay for. "Why were you looking for me?" Kate inquired, with her voice barely audible. Ethan heard what she said back as he was sitting close to her. He gazed at her inten before he continued with his food.
She went ignored by him. Kate sighed, getting frustrated. She needed to know at least why she was there. He didn't look like he was going to give her an answer anytime soon.
"Follow me," he said simply after he finished with his food. Kate stood up hesitant, trailing behind him. Where was he taking her now? Back to that cold room? back so he could choke her to death?. Kate glared at his back as they walked past the hallway.
Thankfully, it wasn't the cold room; it was his study. She was still hesitant to walk into the study with him. She remembered how he tried to choke her to death there. "Are you going to just stand there?" he asked sharply when he noticed, the frown on his face deepening. She hesitated for a few seconds before she walked in.
If she waited one second more, Kate was sure he would drag her in without hesitating. She knew because of the impatient look he had on his face. Ethan walked straight to his drink table and poured himself a drink. She stood there watching him. What was he thinking? Kate wondered. First, he had her locked up, later made them clean her up, and fed her.
Why was he being nice suddenly? Has he finally come back to his senses? "Don't just stand there, have a seat," he said, gesturing for her to sit down. Was he going to choke her unexpectedly? She wondered.
Kate sat the farthest she could, away from him, her heart thumping fast out of fear.
He could easily get up and strangle her without breaking a sweat. He sat down too, taking a sip out of his drink. "You don't have to be afraid. I won't choke you," he assured Kate, but she still didn't believe his words. He scoffed when he saw that she shifted farther into the couch.
Kate gathered all the courage she had and asked him what had been weighing on her mind. "Could you please tell me what my father did?" She asked, searching his face for an expression. His look turned grave as soon as he heard her. Ethan stood up and Kate stood up abruptly too, afraid he was coming to hurt her.
Ethan looked at her for some seconds before walking to the edge of the window. Kate let out a sigh of relief. "Are you sure you don't know about it? Or you are just feigning ignorance?" He probed. Kate sighed deeply when she heard his reply. She was getting tired of this. "I don't know about it. You can tell me, sir," she said, looking down. What mess did her father make?
"Have you ever heard of the name Frederick Wilson?" He asked, still facing the window. "Frederick Wilson?" Kate replied, a little confused. The name sounded familiar, but it didn't ring a bell.
"I don't know who that is, sir," she responded.
He turned and looked at her, searching her face for any trace of dishonesty. He seemed to believe she wasn't lying. After gazing at Kate for almost a minute, Ethan finally said something. "You will live here from now on," he declared. Kate's eyes grew wide with shock. Was she hearing wrong?
"But why...?"
