Isabella's POV
"Why now." I growled at my reflection, struggling with the stubborn strap of my simple black gown. My fingers trembled with nerves, making the tiny clasp nearly impossible to close.
On the nightstand, my phone screen lit up with a flash.
Arie boo:
'You're taking forever.'
I sighed in frustration and put in more effort, my fingers moving faster until the strap finally clicked into place.
"Finally..." I breathed out, relief rushing through me.
I picked up my purse, about to toss my phone inside, when the bedroom door suddenly slammed against the wall with a loud bang, making me flinch.
Without even looking, I already knew it was Eleanor. Ever since my stepsister, Evelyn, disappeared six months ago, leaving behind only a brief note, Eleanor had stormed into my life like a force determined to destroy everything in its path.
"Going out to enjoy yourself, huh?" Eleanor sneered, disgust dripping from every word. "How can you even stand to look at yourself in the mirror after everything you've done?"
I kept my gaze lowered, gripping my purse tighter. "Arielle invited me to a charity event, Eleanor," I said quietly. "It's for a good cause."
"'A good cause?'" Eleanor let out a sharp, bitter laugh that cut through the room.
She rolled her eyes, her face twisting into a scowl. "Please..! The only cause you've ever cared about is yourself. I wonder how you even breathe, carrying so much selfishness and wickedness inside you."
I snapped my head up, stunned by the cruelty in her words.
Her sharp eyes burned into mine with pure hatred. "Issy... you couldn't stand it, could you? You couldn't stand that Evelyn was the star of this family."
"Eleanor, you know that's not true," I mumbled, quickly looking away from her piercing stare.
She took a predatory step closer, her voice rising. "Don't lie to me! You caused that car accident on purpose. You knew that if Evelyn couldn't walk, she wouldn't be able to marry Charlie Harrington. You drove that car into a ditch just to ruin her future. You chased your own sister away!"
"That's not true.."
"Common, save that for a fool," she spat.
My breathing turned shallow, and in an instant, the memory of that rainy night flashed before my eyes-the screaming tires, the dark road, and the terrifying moment my foot slammed on the brake pedal only for it to hit the floorboards completely useless. I'd tried to stop. I'd tried to save her. But in this house, facts didn't matter. The truth never had a voice.
"I loved Evelyn," I whispered, my voice trembling.
"You envied her!" Eleanor cut in rudely. She stormed toward my vanity, snatched up an expensive glass perfume bottle, and hurled it onto the hardwood floor.
The bottle didn't break, but the loud crash made me shrink in panic.
Her voice cracked as she looked away, swallowing back tears.
"And now my daughter is gone. Somewhere out there, paralyzed and alone, because of you..." Her throat tightened as she pointed a trembling finger at me. "You monster... silent, jealous monster."
Tears burned my eyes, threatening to spill over as my chest heaved with uneven gasps.
"Eleanor, please, that's enough," a tired voice called out from the doorway.
My father stood there with his shoulders slumped. He looked older, defeated by the constant screaming in our home. He reached a weak hand out toward his wife. "Isabella is just going to an event. Let her have some peace. Her friend is already-"
Eleanor whirled around like a wild animal, thrusting a sharp finger directly into his chest. "Peace? You want to give her peace after she destroyed your other daughter? My daughter? You always favored Isabella! That's why she turned out so spoiled and cruel. Don't you dare try to hush me, Mason!"
He opened his mouth, maybe to argue, but the fury in Eleanor's glare silenced him instantly. He looked at me with a sad, apologetic expression, but he didn't step forward nor defend me. He just stood there, watching silently while I was torn apart-his usual way of handling things. He always chose silence over protecting me.
Eleanor turned her vicious gaze back to me. "Isabella... you think you can just-"
"Eleanor PLEASE!" I cried out, my voice breaking completely. "I loved Evelyn. I loved her!"
Tears finally spilled down my cheeks.
Eleanor curled her lip in disgust, crossing her arms over her chest.
I couldn't take it for another second. Grabbing my shoes, I pushed past them both and sprinted down the hallway. I didn't care that my hair wasn't perfect. I didn't care that I wasn't wearing my jewelry. I just needed to escape before the walls of this house crushed me completely.
"Run away then!" Eleanor's voice screamed behind me, echoing down the stairs. "But you can't run away from the monster you are!"
I burst through the front door, the cool night air hitting my wet face. I ran down the driveway toward the front gate, where Arielle's car was parked idling.
The passenger door swung open before I even reached the curb. I aggressively wiped the tears from my face and slid into the seat, pulling the door shut.
Arielle looked at me with wide, worried eyes. "You good?"
I nodded slowly, keeping my eyes fixed on the dashboard.
"You took so... long," Arielle said softly, shifting the car into gear and pulling away from the house.
"My stepmom," I managed to choke out, bending over to slip on my shoes. On another note, I was grateful she didn't notice my tear-streaked face; she would've asked a thousand questions within a minute.
Arielle sighed heavily, her grip tightening on the steering wheel. "Why is she always so difficult? It's been more than six months, Isabella. When is she going to stop blaming you for a mechanical failure you couldn't control?"
"Never," I muttered, staring out the window at the passing streetlights. "To her, I'm the villain. To the world, I'm the cruel woman who ruined Evelyn's life. Sometimes, when you hear a lie enough times, you almost believe it."
"Don't you dare think like that," Arielle snapped, though her tone remained fierce with love. "Issy, you are the kindest person I know. Listen to me... tonight, we are not thinking about them. We are going to a luxury charity gala at the Grand Horizon Hotel. We are going to drink expensive champagne, look at beautiful art, and pretend our lives aren't a complete mess. Okay?"
I turned to face her, swallowing the lump in my throat, and forced a small smile. "Okay."
Arielle immediately changed the topic, rambling about a handsome guy who had walked into her flower shop earlier that week. Her bright energy was as contagious as always, and within minutes, the heavy weight in my chest began to lift.
.......
Ten minutes later, we arrived at the Grand Horizon Hotel.
The venue was breathtakingly luxurious, flooded with golden lights, covered in thick blue carpets, and filled with high-society elites who carried the unmistakable scent of extreme wealth. Instantly, that old insecurity crept back in. In my simple dress, I felt like an imposter. I stayed glued to Arielle's side, trying to fade into the shadows near the bar.
But even in the shadows, I couldn't escape the gossip. Everywhere I turned, one specific name echoed through the crowd.
"Charlie Harrington."
"Have you seen Charlie tonight?" a woman whispered in a group nearby.
"Where is he?" another asked, leaning in closer.
"He's in the VIP lounge. He's been an absolute wreck since Evelyn Reed vanished," the first woman replied, shaking her head. "They say he's more ruthless than ever in the boardroom now, but he spends his nights drowning himself in scotch."
"That just means he loved her deeply..." a third sighed dreamily.
A cold shiver ran down my spine at the mention of his name. And the fact that he was around made me cringe so bad. I just hoped and prayed I would never cross paths with him tonight.
"I need some air," I told Arielle, my chest tightening again. "I'll be by the balcony."
"What's wrong?" she asked, noticing my sudden paleness.
"Nothing," I lied, already moving away.
"Don't go too far," she called out, her attention quickly stolen by a passing waiter carrying a tray of appetizers.
I walked quickly toward the quieter end of the grand hallway, heading for the large glass doors near the private elevators.
I just needed a minute of silence-to breathe and think, or at least figure out if I could last ten minutes here.
But before my hand could even touch the glass, a large shadow fell over me.
A man in a sharp black suit, wearing a security earpiece, stepped directly into my path. His face looked like it hadn't smiled in years.
"Miss," his voice was deep, and completely commanding. "My boss wants to see you. Now."
I blinked, my heart skipping a beat.
"Your boss? I think you have the wrong person. I'm just here attending the event with a friend."
"He doesn't have the wrong person," the guard cut in coldly, taking a threatening step forward.
I slowly backed away, my instincts screaming at me to run.
"You have to come with me," he ordered.
"No, I won't," I said curtly, my heart slamming against my ribs. "I don't know you, and I don't know your boss. I'm not going anywhere with you. Sorry."
I turned sharply on my heels to sprint back toward the safety of the crowded ballroom. But as I turned, the crowd suddenly parted.
A man was already walking down the hallway toward me, flanked by two more heavy men. He was tall, wearing a blue suit that looked impossibly expensive. His dark hair was slightly messy, his tie pulled loose at the collar. Even from several feet away, the strong scent of premium bourbon and rich cologne clung to him like a second skin.
He was so damn handsome in a way that felt dangerous to look at-sharp, lethal jawline, high cheekbones, and dark eyes that seemed completely swallowed by darkness.
When I looked closer, my breath caught in my throat. I froze completely.
It was Charlie Harrington.
Isabella's POV
I wanted to scream, apologize for being in his space, and run before he could look at me with his usual deadly hatred, but the words died in my throat because the look in his eyes wasn't hatred. It was something else-something desperate, terrifying, and dangerously obsessive.
"Evelyn?" he whispered the moment he stepped into my space.
He stumbled slightly, one hand shooting out to brace himself against the wall. Obviously, he was completely drunk.
His hazel eyes dropped to my legs, lingering there for a second before snapping back to my face.
"Baby... you can walk?" he whispered, his voice cracking under the weight of overwhelming emotion. "They told me you were gone. They told me you'd never walk again."
"Charlie, wait..." I started in panic, instinctively reaching out to steady his swaying body.
I glanced past him, only to realize every eye in the room was fixed on us. A few guests had already pulled out their phones, recording the scene, while towering security guards pushed through the crowd, quickly stopping them. Voices rose all around us as the entire room descended into chaos. Heat crawled up my neck, and humiliation hit me so hard I could barely breathe.
He lunged forward without warning, his arms locking tightly around my waist as though he couldn't bear the thought of letting me go. Then he pulled me into a hug so violent and tight that the air almost rushed out of my lungs.
He buried his face deep into the crook of my neck, his body shaking as he sobbed silently against my skin.
"Eve..." he groaned brokenly against my neck. "You shattered me when you left. I searched everywhere for you. I thought I'd lost you forever."
His arms tightened around me almost desperately. "Don't ever leave me again. Don't please... I won't let you go this time."
"Charlie, I'm not-"
He pulled back so suddenly it startled me, his hands sliding down to clamp tightly around my wrists. In the space of a heartbeat, the raw grief on his face disappeared completely, replaced by a dark, drunken obsession that made my stomach tighten.
"Eve, not what?" he growled, his eyes locking onto mine with a terrifying dominance. "You're coming with me."
His grip tightened. "We're going home. Right now."
"Let me go!" I cried out, pulling back with all my strength, but his grip was so damned strong.
At the edge of the hallway, Arielle suddenly appeared, her face completely pale as she witnessed the scene.
"Isabella! What is happening? Please, let her go!"
Charlie didn't even blink. He never spared Arielle a single glance. His burning eyes remained locked on my face as he tilted his head slightly toward his men. "Clear the way," he ordered coldly. "She's coming with me. And if anyone interferes... handle them."
The guards moved instantly like machines, forming a solid human wall that completely cut Arielle off from me.
Charlie didn't wait for my permission, he forcefully dragged me toward the open private elevator. His fingers dug so deeply into my skin that sharp pain shot up my arm, and I already knew dark bruises would be left behind by morning.
"Charlie, listen to me! Look at me! I'm Isabella!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, but my voice was completely swallowed by the chaos erupting behind us.
He shoved me into the elevator and stepped in right after me. Before I could even react, he trapped me against the back wall with his body. He leaned down until his lips brushed harshly against my ear, his breath hot, heavy with the scent of alcohol, sending a wave of pure terror through my body.
"What are you even saying, Eve?" he hissed against my ear, his voice low and rough. "Do you have any idea how much I missed you? You ran from everyone... even me... now I finally found you." His lips brushed slowly against my cheek, possessive enough to make my stomach twist. "You're mine now, and I'm never letting you out of my sight again."
The elevator doors slid shut, trapping me in the suffocating space with him.
The ride to the garage felt like a descent into hell. Charlie's body pinned me to the wall, his hand clamped around my wrist, tightening every time I tried to pull away.
"Charlie, let me go! You are making a mistake!" I pleaded, my voice echoing inside the small space.
He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead at the doors, his breathing heavy and uneven.
When the doors finally opened to the dim underground garage, a sleek black SUV waited with its engine humming. One of Charlie's massive men yanked the back door open.
"Get in," Charlie ordered, his voice low and rough.
"No! I'm not Evelyn! Look at me, Charlie!" I yelled, turning my face fully toward him beneath the harsh garage lights.
For a split second, his eyes searched my face. Confusion flickered across his handsome features, but the alcohol clouding his mind smothered it just as quickly. He shook his head aggressively, his jaw tightening.
"Stop playing games with me," he slurred.
He shoved me into the back seat of the vehicle and slid in right after me, while the guy slammed the doors shut instantly.
The SUV sped off before I could even reach for the door handle. I twisted around, staring through the dark tinted window. In the distance, I saw Arielle run out into the garage, screaming my name, but one of Charlie's guards held her back.
My heart sank as the realization hit me-I was completely on my own.
During the entire drive through the rainy streets of New York, I tried to move to the opposite side of the seat. But Charlie wouldn't let me. He pulled me against his side, burying his face into my hair. He was muttering incoherent words, crying softly, and calling for Evelyn.
I sat frozen, terrified that any sudden movement would trigger the ruthless temper of the Harrington Group CEO.
Eventually, his heavy breathing slowed. His head fell against my shoulder, and his grip on my hand loosened slightly.
With the frantic pounding in my head, I hadn't even realized the car had driven through a massive pair of iron gates and pulled up in front of the Harrington mansion. The estate was terrifyingly huge, looking more like a dark stone fortress than a home.
The driver opened the door, and several men immediately rushed over to help carry a completely unconscious Charlie out of the SUV.
The second his hands were off me, I saw my chance. I scrambled out of the vehicle and bolted toward the main gates.
"Miss Reed! Stop right there!" a loud voice boomed, but I ignored it and increased my pace.
Before I could even reach the driveway, two massive men stepped in front of me, blocking my path. Their faces were expressionless, their arms folded tightly across their chests.
"Please, let me leave," I gasped, tears mixing with the rain on my face. "I don't belong here. He mistook me for someone else. Please, let me call a cab."
One of them stepped forward. "Until Mr. Harrington wakes up and clears this up, you are not permitted to leave this property under any circumstances. Please head inside the house... before we're forced to make you."
"No... no, wait! You don't understand!" I cried, stumbling back in despair. "I'm Isabella, not Evelyn! He thinks I'm his fiancée!"
"We are not to judge who you are until Mr. Harrington wakes up," the guard replied coldly. "Go inside."
Realizing I couldn't fight off two massive men and with the rain now pouring harder and colder, I slowly turned and stepped through the front doors of the mansion. The interior was cold and imposing, all polished marble floors and towering ceilings that made the place feel less like a home and more like a fortress.
A quiet maid greeted me at the entrance and introduced herself as "Liona," but my mind was too scrambled to respond.
She simply led me upstairs to a large guest room on the second floor.
The moment she stepped out, I heard the sharp click of a key turning in the lock from the outside.
"Crap! What the hell is going on?" I muttered, rushing to the door and yanking the handle hard before spinning around, about to grab my phone.
I needed to call Mason or Arielle for help, real quick, before Charlie woke up, because that would only make everything worse.
If he realized by morning, or whenever he finally woke, that I wasn't Evelyn, the humiliation would be beyond unbearable. Charlie hated me enough already, especially after Evelyn disappeared following her bad condition.
Only God knew what Eleanor had filled his head with about me... maybe that I'd engineered the accident, as they all believed, along with every ugly name she could think to attach to it.
The fact that I wasn't the one left paralyzed, or even badly hurt, only made the accusations seem true, as though I'd somehow planned it all. Even I couldn't believe I came out unhurt. But sometimes, life just happens.
My breath caught when I couldn't find my phone. Panic surged through me as I searched the room, flinging aside the blanket, checking the floor, even peering under the bed and cushions until the truth hit me with sickening clarity. I'd left it in the car.
"No... no, no, no," I whispered, my voice trembling as I dragged a hand through my hair.
It was my only way to reach anyone, and now it was probably still sitting in Charlie's SUV downstairs.
I spent the entire night pacing the room, my eyes fixed on the locked door. I didn't sleep for a single second.
Every time I closed my eyes, Eleanor's cruel words and Charlie's drunken, terrifying obsession replayed in my mind. I was trapped in a nightmare, and I knew morning would only bring more darkness.
Isabella's POV
When the sun finally rose, pale light spilling through the tall windows, the lock on the bedroom door clicked. I jerked upright and scrambled out of bed.
The door swung open, and Charlie stood there.
He was completely sober now. His dark hair was brushed back, and he wore a crisp white button-down shirt, but his face was terrifyingly pale. The rage in his eyes was no longer clouded by alcohol, it was cold, controlled, and lethal.
He stepped into the room, slammed the door shut behind him, and stared at me for a second.
"You? How the hell did you get in here?" he rasped, taking a slow step toward me.
I backed away until my spine hit the cold glass of the window. "Charlie, I tried to tell you last night, but-"
He grabbed my chin roughly, forcing my head up. His fingers dug into my skin, and his gaze raked over my face with absolute disgust. The realization of his mistake seemed to make him even more furious.
"Isabella," he spat out my name like it was poison. "Where is she? Where is Evelyn?"
"I don't know!" I cried, trying to pull my face out of his harsh grip. "She left six months ago! You forced me into your car last night because you were drunk! You thought I was her!"
Charlie released my chin with a violent shove that made me stumble.
He turned away, running a hand through his hair, his chest heaving with rage and grief. "I touched you," he whispered, staring down at his hands in horror. "I carried you into my home thinking you were Evelyn... and you let me do that?"
"I tried... I'm not a monster, Charlie," I said, my voice breaking as I wiped a tear from my cheek. "I had nothing to do with Evelyn leaving. The brakes failed that night. It was an accident."
"Shut up!" he snapped, whirling back around.
He stepped into my personal space, his eyes burning into mine. "Don't play your dirty games with me! You ruined her life. You drove that car into a ditch because you were jealous of her. You left her a cripple, then harassed her until she fled the country. And now you dare stand here in her place?"
"I am not trying to stand in her place! Let me go home!"
"Home?" Charlie let out a cold, humorless laugh that sent chills down my spine. "You think you're going back to your cozy little life after what you did? No... fate brought you to me last night, Isabella. And I'm going to make sure you pay for every single tear Evelyn shed."
My chest tightened. Pay?
He turned sharply, pulling out his iPhone and pacing the room as he dialed a number.
"Ms. Theo," he said when the line connected, his voice clipped and businesslike. "Good morning. I need you here immediately with a marriage contract draft."
My breath caught as I stared at him. He didn't even look at me as he continued, jaw tight.
"Yes. A binding agreement. I want it prepared for signature today, if possible now." A pause. His eyes flicked briefly in my direction before hardening again. "The parties to be filed are Isabella Reed and Charlie Harrington."
Another pause as he listened, his grip tightening on the phone. "Yes... make sure every clause is airtight. No loopholes, no delays. I want full legal enforcement from the moment it's signed."
He lightly scratched his chin with one finger, listening as the person on the other end spoke.
"You have no damn right to question my orders, Theo," he snapped suddenly, his tone sharp and cutting. "Just shut it and listen. I need those papers within an hour."
He ended the call and slid the phone back into his pocket, still pacing as if I weren't even breathing in the room.
Then he pulled the phone out again and dialed another call.
"And one more thing," he said coldly when the call connected. "I don't want anyone to know about this yet. Not even Victoria... do you understand me?"
He paused, listening, expression unreadable, then ended the call and slipped the phone back into his pocket.
"Cha-charlie, what are you planning to do? What are you-" I asked, trembling, unable to find the last words.
"Planning to get married to the scheming Isabella Reed," Charlie said, his voice dropping into a calm, deadly tone that was far more terrifying than his shouting. "And you are going to sign those papers. Today."
I blinked in absolute shock.
"Marriage? Are you insane? You hate me! You love Evelyn!"
"Exactly," Charlie hissed, stepping closer until I could feel the cold aura radiating from him. "I love Evelyn. And because you destroyed her future, I am going to destroy yours. You wanted everything Evelyn had? Fine. You will take her place as my wife. But it won't be a fairy tale, Isabella. It will be your living hell."
"I won't sign them," I said, forcing a shaky breath as I searched for a spark of courage inside me. "You can't make me do that."
Before he could respond, a sharp knock echoed through the door.
Charlie didn't move at first. His gaze stayed locked on me for a brief, dangerous second before he turned.
"Yeah, come in."
The door opened and a man stepped inside first, exchanging brief, familiar greetings with Charlie as if this tension-filled room didn't exist. A woman followed closely behind him, dressed sharply in a brown suit, holding a tablet.
Her eyes immediately swept over me from head to toe, her lips curling slightly in obvious judgment.
Without wasting time, she turned to Charlie. "Your official line has been ringing non-stop since last night, sir."
Charlie exhaled through his nose, already irritated. "Did you take any?"
"Just two, sir," she replied, tapping her tablet. "And both were about the same issue."
She turned the screen toward him.
Charlie took it, scanning the display in silence. His jaw tightened once, then he scoffed. "Inform the head department I will handle the allegations myself."
I stood frozen, watching everything unfold in rapid motion, as if I were trapped outside my own life.
The woman's gaze flicked back to me again, sharper this time. "Sir... why does she look like the alleged woman?" she asked cautiously, glancing between us.
Charlie's head snapped toward her instantly. The look in his eyes alone made her straighten, her confidence faltering.
"Sorry, sir," she muttered quickly, lowering her gaze.
"If there's nothing else," Charlie said coldly, already turning away from her, "you may leave."
"Oh... okay, sir."
She hesitated only a second longer, shooting me one last irritated look before stepping back. The man who'd entered with her followed silently, and the door clicked shut behind them.
Silence settled heavily in the room.
Charlie turned back to me, his expression tight with restrained anger.
"All thanks to you," he said flatly. "Now, Harrington Group's reputation is on the line... allegations that I kidnapped you."
He stepped closer, stopping just short of me. "Now listen, we'll fix this together. By tomorrow, we'll go to the press interview and clear it up... as husband and wife."
I stood frozen, the words 'husband and wife' crashing into me like a slap.
My throat tightened as I stared at him, unable to fully process what I had just heard.
"No..." I finally whispered, shaking my head slightly. "You can't just decide that. I can't marry you."
Charlie leaned down, his face inches from mine, those hazel eyes completely void of mercy.
"If you don't sign those papers when Theo arrives with them," he said coldly, "I will ruin your life in ways you can't even imagine. I'll destroy your father's business by tomorrow morning. I'll buy out everything your family owns, throw them out into the streets, and erase the Reed name from New York, Isabella."
He tilted his head slightly, his voice dropping even lower. "Do you want to test me?"
My breath hitched. I knew he wasn't bluffing. Charlie Harrington was a ruthless billionaire who crushed his business rivals without a second thought. If I refused, he would do exactly what he promised.
And even though my father had failed to protect me, he was still my father. If I caused his downfall, Eleanor would make my life even more unbearable... and the guilt would destroy me.
"Why are you doing this?" I whispered, tears streaming freely down my face. "Please, Charlie. Just let me go."
"Because someone has to suffer for Evelyn's pain," he said coldly, his expression completely unreadable. "If she's out there somewhere hurting, then you will hurt right here. You'll live in this mansion like a prisoner. A living reminder of your selfishness."
He straightened, adjusting his posture as if the conversation meant nothing. "Theo will arrive soon... and I don't want you doing anything foolish, Isabella. Don't push me."
He turned toward the door.
Panic surged through me. I rushed forward and dropped to my knees, grabbing at his legs. "Please, Charlie... I–I.."
He shoved my hands off him without even looking down, then pulled the door open, walked out, and slammed it shut with a loud bang.
I was left on the floor, tear-streaked and broken. A sob tore out of my chest as I collapsed fully, my hands trembling against the cold floor.
How on earth am I supposed to marry Charlie Harrington?
