AVA'S POV.
"Hey, over here," my best friend yelled while waving her hands excitedly. I smiled and happily made my way to her, giving her a long warm hug.
"I'm so glad we get to spend our senior year together," she squeaked, hugging me again.
"I can't believe it," I said happily, looking around the prestigious Red Crescent Academy.
If I was ever asked to mention a time when I believed dreams do come true, this would be it.
I know most people dread being back in school, especially on the first day. Truth is, I haven't been in one for ages, and if given the chance, I would rather be wrapped up in my blanket watching my favourite TV show than enduring those long, tedious hours in the classroom. But this time was different. This was Red Crescent Academy, for crying out loud.
Red Crescent Academy was the best school in the whole pack, attracting the elite from affluent backgrounds. And being a human and the child of a poor single mother struggling to pay bills, my dream of attending here was close to nonexistent. Most students here had grown up around pack traditions and rules while I had only heard stories from the outside looking in. But here I was, standing in front of this great institution, all thanks to my sweet mother who saved every penny to grant me this experience. It may not seem like a lot to most people, but it meant the world to me.
"Come, let me take you to your classroom," Lisa insisted, grasping my hand and pulling me along with her.
As we turned left, a moving brick wall crashed into me, sending me sprawling to the ground. The wall of a person continued walking without an apology.
"What the hell, man?" I asked loudly. The few people in the hallway turned in my direction. "A simple apology could go a long way."
My last statement caused the brick wall to stop.
I rose from the ground, glaring at the person, refusing to yield as my best friend tried to pull me away. I would not allow this person to treat me like I was nothing.
When he finally turned, his captivating eyes caught me off guard, casting a strange spell over me. Despite his annoyed expression, my confidence began to falter. There was something unnerving about the intensity of his stare, almost too sharp, too aware.
"What did you just say?" His voice was low and husky.
I swallowed hard, attempting to find my words. "I... I would appreciate it if you offered an apology instead of just walking past after knocking me to the ground."
"Are you implying that it is my fault that you were standing in my way?" he asked challengingly, raising an eyebrow.
"That's not what she meant. She would not stand in your way again," Lisa intervened, pinching my arm hard. "We apologize. Ava is new here."
"I will let it pass this time, but teach your friend some manners. I won't be so forgiving next time," he warned before striding away.
Once he was at a safe distance, Lisa forcefully pulled me into an empty classroom.
"What was that all about?" I asked.
"It's you trying to get us in trouble. Do you even know who he is?" Lisa asked, crossing her arms tightly.
"I don't. What does that have to do with anything?" I asked.
She rolled her eyes. "Obviously, you don't. If you did, you would know not to mess with Dante ."
"He was the one who bumped into me. Don't act like you didn't see that," I frowned, defending myself.
"I know. But that guy is part of the Golden Boys, and if you want to have a nice time here, I suggest you avoid them," Lisa explained.
"Golden Boys? What are you talking about? Is this some sort of cult?"
"Apparently, you, my friend, know nothing about the werewolf world," Lisa said, pulling out her phone.
The Golden Boys, the Alpha's triplets, were greatly admired and feared by both the students and teachers of this academy. They effortlessly got whatever they wanted and were constantly surrounded by girls. They were every girl's dream mate. Not mine, though.
The rest of the day went relatively well, and I was content. During lunch at the cafeteria, as we carried our trays, Lisa accidentally tripped, sending the contents of her meal crashing onto the same guy I had seen earlier, Dante .
The hall, which had formerly been noisy, became so quiet that it was possible to hear the faintest sound of a pin dropping to the ground. Lisa gasped, and I could see the pure panic on her face. The colour drained from her skin, rendering her as pale as a porcelain doll.
"I'm so sorry," Lisa stammered, avoiding eye contact and attempting to wipe the food stain off his clothes with her handkerchief. Dante swiftly caught her hand.
"What are you trying to do?" he demanded, his teeth clenched.
"I'm so sorry," Lisa replied softly, still keeping her head lowered.
"Sorry? Is that all you've got? Do you have any idea how much these clothes you just ruined cost?" he scoffed.
"It was a mistake. I did not mean for it to happen. Please, forgive me," Lisa pleaded, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Look at me, peasant," Dante said coldly, raising her chin to force her to meet his gaze. "What makes you think you deserve my forgiveness?"
"I'm so sorry," Lisa repeated, tears streaming down her face.
He sighed before replying, "I will forgive you on one condition. Get up on one of these tables and put on a show worthy of the nightlife."
"Pardon?" Lisa looked taken aback.
"I will not repeat myself. I said get on that table and dance for us," Dante demanded.
"But..." Lisa stuttered, mortified.
"You wanted my forgiveness, didn't you? So earn it," he smirked, clearly pleased with himself.
Glancing around, I noticed no one in the room seemed bothered. In fact, they already had their phones out, ready to capture the scene. The casual cruelty in their faces made my stomach twist. Maybe they were used to this kind of thing, but I wasn't. I could not watch my friend being humiliated and stay silent.
"She will not do that," I yelled.
AVA'S POV.
"She will do no such thing," I yelled, redirecting his attention to me. "Why are you being so unreasonable? Do you honestly think she would want to waste good food on you?"
"You again," he scoffed. "When will you learn to respect your place, you filthy human?"
"I would not stand by and watch you disrespect my friend," I retorted firmly.
"What's your name," Dante asked.
"Ava,"
He smirked walking closer to me, when he was inches away from my face, he stopped and whispered in my ears, "Why don't you prove to me how great your friendship is,"
I swallowed the lump in my throat taking a step back "Huh?"
He announced loudly so that everyone in the cafeteria could help, "Navy would like to give us a show instead. Right Navy?" he frowned.
I clenched my hand in anger, I knew he deliberately mispronounced my name because he did not want to acknowledge me as a person but what further added to my fury, was the fact that nobody tried to stop him. Not even his other brothers who look like they were enjoying the show. If this were the future Alphas of the Moonlight pack, I would say we are doomed.
"Get on the table quickly, we don't have all the time in the world," he hissed.
A glance at the students sitting nearby, was all it took for them to disappear, leaving the table vacant.
"Get on it, now," he scolded as he got more irritated with each passing minute.
I looked around before climbing onto the table, I could feel my confidence melting by the constant stares of the crowd, with their phones out ready to record my humiliation. Lisa mouthed sorry to me, I know she could do nothing, she feared his guys and so did every other person in this big hall. Very few had any pity for me, the rest seemed to relish in the idea.
"Get on with it slut," One guy threw a can of juice at me, erupting the laughter of everyone in the room.
I glared at him before looking at Dante right into his eyes "You wanted a show, right? A show you will get,"
I strolled the length of the table, performing a forced catwalk, swaying my hips back and forth.
"Hey, that is not what you were told to do, dummy! Strip like the whore you are!" someone in the crowd yelled out.
I chose to ignore their words and instead focused on Dante , locking eyes with him as I started a small dance, toying with the buttons of my shirt.
For a quick moment, it seemed like I saw a flash of admiration in their eyes. Yet, given the circumstances, it might have been my own imagination. I approached him, unfastening two buttons, and when he least expected it, I delivered a sudden kick to his face, prompting a loud gasp of shock from the crowd. His two brothers rushed to his aid, helping him up from the ground.
I knew I had just signed a death wish but the pure look of shock on his face and his bleeding nose was worth it. If he thinks I was going to bow down to his stupid demands then he was going to have a hard time getting me to conform to his stupidity. Unlike the rest of his pack I was immune to his alpha authority.
I smiled at him giving him a small salute before walking away from him.
"You," he yelled, his voice full of threats "You are going to pay dearly for this,"
"I will be waiting," I smirked before making my way out of the cafeteria. I saw the look of confusion, admiration, and anger in the crowd as I made my way out.
I hurried to my car, there was no reason to linger at school. Once securely in my seat, my hands began to shake uncontrollably. It had taken every ounce of courage I possessed to confront the situation. My heart was beating so fast I was afraid it was going to rip out of my chest.
"Ava, what have you done?" I scolded myself, burying my face in my hands. This was not how I pictured my first day at my dream school.
******
I got home to see my mom preparing some pasta in the kitchen as soon as she saw me, she smiled sweetly.
"How was school darling ?" She asked.
"Fine," I mouthed, deciding not to share the awful events of my day. Revealing that the school she believed to be the best was actually run by a group of mean spirited teenagers aiming to cause pain would only break her kind heart.
"What happened to you?" she asked, clearly shocked, as she hurried to my side to inspect the juice stain on my shirt.
"Nothing, Mum," I replied, attempting to conceal the stain. "It's nothing."
She paused, lifting my face to meet hers. "Did something bad happen to you, baby?" she asked softly.
Shaking my head, I replied, "No, I just tripped on something, but I am fine now."
She studied my face for a moment. "Okay, just remember, you can always talk to me about anything. I'm here for you, sweetheart."
I managed a weak smile and nodded. "Thanks, Mum. I'm going to change."
"Wait," she called out as I rushed to my room."Just before you came in, someone dropped off a letter for you,"
"Who is it from?" I inquired.
My breath hitched in my chest as she uttered the next words, "It's from Red Crescent Academy."
Was that an expulsion letter?Frankly, I would not be surprised, considering I had just embarrassed the school's golden boys in front of everyone. It did not bother me as much until I realised how much money my mom spent on my education there. That made me feel really guilty.
"Did you read what is inside?" I asked, feeling a bit anxious.
"Nope, I thought you might want to open it yourself," she replied, offering a small smile.
My heart thundered in my chest as I accepted the letter from my mom. Beads of sweat formed on my forehead, as she waited for me to open it.
With a deep breath, I broke the seal. My eyes widened in shock at the words staring back at me...
THIRD PERSON POV.
Dante's fists slammed repeatedly against the punching bag, his rage increasing with each strike. He could not get over the audacity of that new girl questioning his authority and humiliating him in front of the entire school, something that had never happened in his entire life. With every hit, his anger grew stronger as he silently plotted ways to make her pay dearly for it.
"Still thinking about that girl?" Collin teased, a smirk playing on his lips while casually resting his hands on the breasts of a girl neither of his brothers had seen before. But Dante and Kris paid her no attention. It was a regular sight seeing Collin, the youngest of the triplets, with a different girl almost every day.
Dante stopped the swinging punching bag, violently yanked off his gloves, and threw them across the room.
"She really got to you, huh, bro?" Collin chuckled. "I have never seen you this worked up over a girl before."
Dante glared at his brother, clearly not amused. He collapsed into a nearby chair and muttered under his breath, "That stupid bitch."
Collin leaned forward, watching as Dante repeatedly ran his hands through his hair. "So what are you going to do about this girl?" he asked with a smug grin. "She made a fool out of you in front of the entire school. What's stopping her from doing it again? I think you should teach her a lesson. One she would never forget."
Kris, who had been silently scrolling through his phone, finally decided to speak. "Or maybe you should let it slide. After all, if you had not made that ridiculous request, none of this would have happened," he pointed out calmly.
Dante scoffed. "Please, don't start with one of your lectures. I'm not in the mood for that. Besides, you wouldn't understand. Asserting dominance is much better than trying to play nice."
"If that's completely true, then why didn't it work on that girl?" Kris asked matter-of-factly.
"Because humans are stubborn and brainless. Eventually, I'll teach that weak creature her place. Trust me."
Kris merely shook his head, not interested in arguing further.
Just then, the door burst wide open. Standing there was Ava, clutching a crumpled piece of paper in her hand while breathing heavily as though she had run all the way there. Without sparing anyone else in the room a glance, she marched straight toward Dante and threw the paper at him.
"Do I look like a joke to you?" she yelled, jabbing a finger against his hard chest, her face red with rage. "Just because you're the Alpha's son does not give you the right to treat me like this. I refuse to quit!"
Dante's confusion slowly shifted into irritation. "What the hell are you talking about? Last time I checked, you were the one who injured my nose, and now you have the audacity to storm into my private gym and start talking nonsense?"
Ava crossed her arms, her voice calmer now. "It's a shame your nose healed so nicely. I liked it better when it was disfigured. It suited your personality."
Her comment earned a few suppressed laughs from the others in the room, though they quickly disguised them as coughs the moment Dante shot them a warning glare.
"If you think you're going to expel me because of some stupid misunderstanding, then you must be joking. I'm not leaving after my mother spent so much money on my tuition," Ava added firmly.
"What are you talking about, weakling?" Dante narrowed his eyes at her.
Before she could answer, Collin interrupted. "Seeing as you embarrassed Dante in front of the whole school, I thought it would be better if you got expelled before you corrupted anyone else's mind." He grinned before adding, "Just following my teacher's example."
Ava's eyes widened in disbelief. "Wow. So not only are you bullies, but you're cowards too?" she scoffed. "What's wrong? Are you scared I'm going to destroy your little empire?"
"I'm not a coward," Dante snapped immediately, unwilling to let his image take another hit. "And what makes you think I'm going to let you off without proper punishment?" he asked, leaning forward until he was inches away from her face.
"I may not be as powerful as you people, but one thing I will never tolerate is allowing some spoiled rich boys to treat me like I'm nothing!"
Dante burst into laughter as though she had just told the funniest joke imaginable.
"We can't treat you like nothing. You want to know why?" He paused, his tone dropping into something colder and far more wicked. "Because to us, you already are nothing."
Ava bit down on her lip, holding back the anger threatening to explode inside her. "I guess you need more than a nosebleed to knock some sense into you."
"What I need, sweetheart, is someone to remind the entire school what happens when you end up in the Golden Boys' bad books."
"Golden Boys? That has got to be the lamest name I've ever heard," Ava scoffed before turning to leave.
"See you at school tomorrow, Navy," Dante called after her mockingly.
The second she disappeared from the room, Kris spoke up. "I like her."
"I agree," Collin nodded approvingly. "It's rare seeing someone stand up to Dante, especially someone of her rank. I find it admirable."
"I wouldn't call it admirable," Dante muttered, clenching his fists tightly. "There's nothing admirable about stupidity."
"What are you going to do to her?" Collin asked almost too eagerly. But that was not surprising. He had always enjoyed drama far too much.
Dante fell silent for a moment, staring blankly ahead before finally speaking in a low, husky tone.
"Exactly what we've always done to people who forget their place."
"You wouldn't go that far," Kris warned cautiously.
Dante's expression darkened.
"She asked for it."
