Chapter 1 One

The Dark Clouds Above Her Love

Sabrina's Point of View

We lay there in each other's arms. A smile formed on my lips and it was unable to clear away for the next five minutes.

Then Kelvin raised his head and looked into my face. His eyes always seemed to get to me. They were a dark shade but also carried a tint of gold in them. His hair was long and grey, and he was the only one in his family to have that color. I always wondered why he chose that very hue.

"Always happy when I come home to this," he said to me.

"Come home to me, you mean?" I asked, hoping he had misspoken.

"Sex, babe," Kelvin said. "And you are part of that too."

"Nah, I thought it was the other way round. Me first, then the sex comes after?"

He shook his head as if he was exasperated by what I was saying. "Whatever. So, what's the occasion?"

The smile on my face spread wider. I had been thinking about it for some days, and the decision I had made was one I would not regret.

I loved Kelvin with all my heart and I wanted him to see that, too.

So I sat up in bed and said to him, "I wanna prove my love to you, babe."

He gave me a look to tell me that he wasn't following. "Really? Well, I thought you keep doing that every single day."

"Yeah. But there is something else."

"Something like what?" he wanted to know.

A year ago, my father had died and left me the honor of leading the people of Tweed pack. So, I became the leader, Alpha Queen. There had been some controversies about me taking on the mantle and I heard rumors, that since I was a lady, someone from a royal family would have to challenge me for the seat.

Kevin had been with me since then. And he was one of the few people who stood by me in my becoming Queen. Well, I wanted to back down because I didn't need the opposition. But he told me that those were just rumors and no one would think of daring me for the throne. And just as he had said, they were just rumors. I took the throne as easy as it could be. So I decided that it was better for me to give him the position of Alpha King, so that he could make me his Luna at once. That was what I wanted.

"Well, you know I'm Alpha Queen, right?"

"Yeah, everybody knows that," he said.

"And you are my fiancée," I said.

"Yeah, I am," he said and kissed me on the lips.

"But I don't really see us being an item this way. I want it to be better."

"How do you want it to be better?"

"Well, I want to offer you my position as Alpha leader of the pack. You will be crowned Alpha King, and then you can make me your Luna and.. uhm.. I become your wife."

He was quiet for a moment. Then said, "Oh, babe. Do you really want to give that all up for me?"

"Yes, yes, I do," I said to him.

"Well, that line sounds like something you should say to me when I actually propose."

I laughed and he joined me. "So, what do you want me to say?"

"Say that you agree."

"Alright, babe. I agree. Anything for you. What about your council?"

"I'll tell them about it later. Wanted to discuss it with you first."

"Is that really wise? Thought you should take it up with them first."

"It doesn't really matter, and the leaders always have the final say," I said. "By the way, we are getting married. So what's the reason for them to decline?"

He nodded at me. "Wow. You really have this planned out, don't you?"

"I do."

"So, what now? Should we go another round?"

"Do you want to go another round?" I asked him in a sexy tone.

He put his hand right in between my legs and I forgot how to speak. The next thing I knew, I was on my side and he was hammering me from behind.

Just the exact thing I expected him to do.

Kevin's Point of View

I left her bed while she was still asleep, turned and took a run through the woods. The night was quiet and it was just me howling in the forest. Got home later that night feeling supercharged.

Thomas was still awake when I returned, and he was the one who noticed the dried leaves that stuck to my hair.

"So you had a wild run this night?" he asked.

"Yeah, I did," I said, dropped my jacket on a chair and poured myself a bottle of champagne.

"What woods?"

"Tweeds, of course."

"What's the celebration tonight?" Thomas asked. He just stood at a corner as if he didn't want to get in my way.

"What celebration?" I demanded.

"Well, you took a run, which you hardly ever do. And you're drinking champagne at," he consulted his watch. "One in the morning. Looks like you have something to be happy about, Kevin."

I sipped my champagne. "You're right, Thomas. But get out of the corner and come sit down. Maybe I'll tell you then."

He came to sit on the couch, one immaculate piece of a man. Should have been a priest himself. "I am seated now."

I gave him the cup and he took a sip. "How does it feel being the beta of an Alpha King?"

"You mean me?" Thomas asked.

"Yes, I mean you, Thomas."

"I am already your beta, Kevin. If you seem to have forgotten that."

I chuckled. "I know that. And that is why I am asking how you would feel being the beta of an Alpha King and not just an Alpha."

"I am not leaving your side," Thomas said.

"You won't be. Because I'll be the new Alpha King of Tweed pack in the next few days."

I saw the look in his eye. Those full eyebrows going up a notch. "And how will that happen if I may ask?"

I got to my feet and gestured with my hands mostly. "So after we had some steamy sex, she told me what she had in mind for the both of us."

"Okay."

"So, she is Alpha Queen and she wants to give it all up to make me Alpha King," I said, arms akimbo, face with a smile.

"I see. Well, is there a catch?"

"A catch?" I asked.

"Yeah. Like something she wants in return."

"Well, she wants me to make her my Luna. And since we are going to be getting married, that won't be a problem for me. So what do you think, Thomas?" I wanted to be hear his opinion.

Thomas was silent for a spell. He looked at the ground, my cup of champagne still hanging from his lazy grip. His index finger went round the rim a couple of times while I waited for him to say something.

He finally looked up at me. "You said it won't be a problem for you. How sure are you about that?"

"Very sure. Come on, Thomas. What's that supposed to mean?"

"Why don't you tell me?" Thomas said.

"I have been with her for a very long time now, so that should be easy as ABC."

"But you do have a problem, Kevin."

"I do?" I asked him and sat down. "And what is that?"

"Well, it is what you would call misplaced priority. Answer me this, has she talked to the council about this?"

"No, she told me that she hadn't. But that's not going to matter because she always has the final say."

Thomas said, "Well, that is correct. But the council will always be the council. They will object."

"Why would they? I'm getting married to her anyway. So, it's like she just put it on fast forward, isn't it?"

"Maybe that is how you see it. But how I see it?" Thomas shook his head. "You are going to have a problem. You will be met with a council that doesn't want you, no matter what she wants. There is a law that an Alpha Queen can marry an Alpha but won't relegate her position and duties to him. She still remains as ruler."

I said nothing about that. It was new to me.

"So, you being Alpha King will come with a lot of opposition, Kevin."

I rubbed my face with both hands. "Give me that," I said, and took the cup from him, swallowing all its contents.

"But there is a way out of it," Thomas said.

I looked at him and saw that his face was bedaubed with a thoughtful expression. "What's going on in that mind of yours, Thomas?"

Thomas smiled at me. "You go on with the plan to make you Alpha King."

"Still?"

"Yes. Then you get rid of Sabrina. Reject her as your Luna, then kill her and make her death look like an accident. That way, you can dissolve her council and form yours. No more dirty opps. This, my Alpha. is the only way to becoming King."

Chapter 2 Two

The Plot Deepens

Sabrina's Point of View

"It is a no for me," Derek said.

We were seated at a long table, the council members and I. A small gathering made up of two men and two women, just to balance things up. During my father's time, there were five men and one woman. Derek was one of the most complicated person on my council. I kept wondering how the heck he had made the number, and remembered that my father had told me to let him stay and that his advice would be immeasurable to me.

Well, I did not like the one he was giving. I let the others talk.

Vanessa looked from Derek to me. "This hasn't happened before, your majesty. Are you sure you really thought this through?"

"No, she did not," Derek cut in. "She is doing it out of love. Or is it infatuation."

"Is there a difference between the two?" I asked him.

Derek looked at me as if I had just spoken in a language that he did not understand.

I turned to Vanessa. "And yes, I have thought this through. Regardless of what Derek here might say about it. Plus, it hasn't happened before, this I have also considered."

"So the people might not take it with open arms," said the other man named Clinton.

"Change is always constant, Clinton."

"You say that because you want it to happen to you."

"Are you going to counsel me, Derek, or are you going to condemn me?"

Derek shook his head. "First of all, this plan of yours has a lot of loopholes, and I don't see it playing out the way you figure. The man in concern is an Alpha that we know nothing about."

"Oh, he is from here," I said. "You can check out his family records."

"We cannot trust this man with a position he knows nothing about," Clinton said.

"And that is why he is going to make me his Luna. I'll teach him the ropes."

Derek turned to Ava. "Can you please tell her majesty that this is not wise?"

"You talk as if you are afraid of losing your seat, Councilman Derek."

"It's not that I'm worried about, your majesty. It is about you losing your position to a man who might betray you."

The hall was silent after he said this. Everyone had their eyes on me. They were waiting for me to assure them that Kevin would not betray me after I had made him Alpha King.

"Is this man of yours from a royal family?" Ava asked.

"No, he isn't," I said. "What has that got to do with this?"

"Well, almost everything. Handing royalty to a commoner on a silver platter tends to bring bad luck. And we don't want that."

"Look, I know Kelvin better than any of you here does. He isn't thst kind of person. I can vouch for that."

"Of course, you can. But what about us? You think it won't rub off on us, or that we won't face consequences if he turned out bad?"

"Maybe you should just stick to being Alpha Queen," Vanessa reasoned. "The law allows you to get married to any man of your choice and still keep the throne, performing your duties and all. You do not have to relinquish all that, except if you have an heir."

Which I didn't.

Why were they so against me making Kelvin Alpha King? But it was a decision that I had already made, whether they liked it or not. So, they would just have to adjust to the new me.

I leaned back into my chair. "My decision has already been made. And it is up to you all to support me, or don't. Regardless, this is how we will do it and the people will accept."

No one said anything else.

***

After the meeting, Vanessa came to meet me in the lobby. I told her that I loved her robe, and she just smiled.

"What was that back there?" she demanded.

Vanessa was my cousin, so she had some sway when it came to me.

"What was what?" I asked, feigning ignorance.

"You making decisions before consulting us, is what. Is it because of Kevin?"

I turned to face her. "You don't like him?"

"No, I don't like the fact that you're rushing this. You shouldn't rush anything when you're in love with a man. What if.." she stopped talking and lowered her voice to a whisper. "What if he is just after your throne?"

"You cannot be serious, Vanessa. Kelvin is not like that. And you all are wrong about him."

She shook her head. "Well, I hope you are right. For all our sakes."

"You should support me on this, cousin."

"I am trying to, Bri. But I just thought there could be some time to talk this through. You didn't even tell me."

"Sorry. What are the rest of them saying?"

"They'll agree, eventually. But Derek might have a plan B in mind, though I don't know what it is."

"If you find out, let me know."

"Sure."

Later, I sent for Kelvin and when he came, I told him all that had happened during the council meeting.

"I understand they are concerned about how I am going to turn out, but I am not that man."

"Oh, how I wish you'd been there to tell them yourself, babe. But I told them that my decision has already been made. Vanessa later told me that they would agree anyway."

"Really?"

"Yeah. But Derek might have a different plan altogether."

"Should be ready for him, babe," Kelvin said, a serious expression on his face. "Do you want me to watch him? I can send my beta to keep an eye on him."

"No, and if I wanted to do that, I have spies. Why would there be any need to watch him?"

"Well, I mean, you just said he could have an ulterior motive, right? Better you keep an eye on him lest he takes you by surprise. He might even want to hurt you so as to prevent you from making me Alpha King."

I thought about this for a moment. It didn't make any sense to me, what Kelvin was insinuating. Because I didn't see Derek as a traitor, even though he could be full of crap most times.

"Uh-uh, I don't think that would be necessary, babe," I disagreed with him.

Kevin shrugged. "Alright, then."

So we spent the rest of the day and it was only interrupted when the council members returned to give me their feedback on the matter. And it was exactly as Vanessa had told me.

Ana was the one who spoke for them, and it was odd, because Derek was usually spokesperson.

"We are only agreeing with you because we feel that your good judgement about people with fall with this one too," Ana said, and I just nodded at them with a smile.

Kevin's Point of View

I got back home and my beta was still up waiting for me. This time, he was the one with the cup of champagne.

I took off my jacket and looked at him. "Are you celebrating something, Thomas?" I asked.

My beta shook his head. "Just took it so I could think. Didn't run wild in the woods tonight?"

"Just back to being me," I said.

"You'll have to be a bit different in the coming days, Alpha Kevin."

"Okay. So I think we are ready."

"Ready to do what?" Thomas asked.

"Oh, Sabrina's council agreed to let her crown me as Alpha King," I told him.

Thomas leaned forward in his chair, a smirk on his face. "Good. But what are we getting ready for?"

"Well, you talked about doing away with her, didn't you?" I spoke.

"Yes I did. But that happens after you reject her. So that's the part you should get ready for instead. It is a more public show than her death."

I thought about what he had said, and saw that he was right. The council didn't really want me to be Alpha King, and according to Sabrina, they were only allowing it because of her. Which meant that I was going to have real problems with them in the future.

"And one more thing," Thomas said. "In the day of the occasion, you need to find someone else to take her place after you reject her. Hope you have someone in mind?"

I nodded. "Yeah. I'll go look for one of those girls I used to sleep with now and then."

"That will do. When is the occasion happening?" he asked.

I said, "In two days time."

"Short. So you'll need to get her ready, your majesty. And the rest of the things that you are going to need. This should be done with all seriousness and intent because you will be renouncing your love for a woman you've spent a long time with."

And that was the problem. I realized that I was going to change my life, and Sabrina's as well.

Chapter 3 Three

Betrayal At The Hall

Sabrina's Point of View

I took a walk in the garden alone, trying to think about the results of what the day might bring. It occurred to me that I was doing the right thing. Taking my love for Kevin to the next level. I knew he should be the one doing that, but in such case he wasn't the one who was entitled.

So, I would make him.

I stopped at the statue of my father, prayed to him and told him to be with me. Then, I felt someone walking towards me. When I turned, it was Kevin, in his new kingly robes. I got to my feet and flashed him a smile and he came to meet me.

"You came to see your father, huh?" Kelvin said. "And you didn't even bring me with you."

"Didn't want to bother you," I said.

"Well, what did he say?"

That got me laughing.

He looked up at my father's face for some time then said, "This should be a perfect spot."

"What?" I asked.

He looked at me, and his eyes seemed to have been elsewhere. "No, nothing. Just talking to myself."

I wondered if he was talking about the place he wanted to propose to me or something. But I didn't ask further. If he wanted it to be a surprise, fine.

Kelvin took my hand and we walked back into the house. The guests were all waiting. Most of them I knew, while the others has been invited. Out in the courtyard, there were people of Tweed pack and they had come to witness something that had never happened before. I wondered how that made me feel. After we entered the hall, we moved towards the balcony, where a red ribbon had been tied like an arch over our heads. Kelvin still held my hand as we moved into view of the people below.

They shouted and hollered at us, in a good way at least. Two royal chairs were brought to the balcony. One was the one I used to seat on, and the other was new. I guess that was supposed to be mine.

Derek stepped forward and held out his hands for silence. "This is a new day for Tweed pack. We take a new path, different from the one we were used to. But it doesn't mean that we are straying. We are just doing it better."

More hollering.

He continued, "Sabrina Brooke our Alpha Queen has agreed to offer Kevin Oates, her fiancée the position of Alpha King, in expression of her love for him."

I heard choruses of 'awwn' down in the courtyard and I smiled.

Derek went on, "We shall serve Alpha Kelvin just as we have served Alpha Sabrina, who will no doubt become our Luna. And with this, I crown Kevin Oates as our new Alpha King."

The crown came off the pillow and sat on Kevin's head. He sat in the throne and I looked at him, waiting for the moment he would announce me as his Luna.

But that didn't happen.

Kelvin suddenly turned over and began to cough. It got prolonged that I herded him inside the hall and called for the doctor.

"Oh, don't worry, I'm fine now," Kelvin said, and he was right. The cough had stopped.

"Are you okay?" I asked him.

Kelvin nodded. "Yes, I am fine."

I was too concerned about him that I didn't even notice the lady who walked into the hall at that moment. She was wearing a long black dress with a hood. And she was already close by the time I noticed her.

"Who are you?" I demanded, more surprised that no one stopped her than the fact that a stranger was standing right in front of us.

She pulled down her hood and went to stand beside Kelvin.

I could not say anything, just watched what was happening.

It was Vanessa who held my hand and asked me, "What the heck is happening here?"

Derek asked me, "Who is this woman, your majesty? Do you know her?"

Before I could say anything, Kevin spoke, "Her name is Lara. And she is going to be my Luna."

***

I could not believe what I had heard. My own Kelvin with another woman. Telling me that she was the one he wanted to make his Luna.

What the heck was going on?

I looked into his face. "Kevin?"

"I'm sorry, Bri. I know that we have come a long way, but I can tell that it can't work for both of us."

"So you waited until I made you king for you to dump me?" I almost screamed that out.

Derek came to whisper into my ear. "The people outside are wondering what is going on, Sabrina."

I noticed that he didn't refer to me as 'your majesty' but my first name. It made me angry.

"Tell me that this is a joke, Kelvin, please," I went to put one palm over his cheek. There was something in his eyes that I didn't notice. Something new. It was as if Kelvin had snapped.

He took my hand away. "This is real, and it is happening."

"What happens to me now?"

Kevin shrugged, that gesture he was used to. "Eff off."

That was what he told me. To 'eff off'.

***

I left the hall and three of my council people followed me. It was Derek's voice that got to me and made me stop.

The balcony on the other side of the building was much longer.

"See what I told you! You didn't listen to us."

I said nothing.

"Easy, Derek," Vanessa said. "Can't you see that she is affected as well?"

Yeah, the tears rolling down my cheek were visible.

"Giving a commoner power is the worst thing that can happen to a dynasty," Ana said. "It hardly ever goes well."

"What can I do?" I asked.

"What can you do?" Derek said, sarcasm on his tone. "Is that a rhetorical question or what? There is nothing you can do about this situation. He is Alpha King now. And whoever he makes his Luna stays Luna. They only way is to talk with him, maybe he can reconsider. Then we lot pray to keep our jobs at the council table."

"Can bet my next pay that he'll dissolve us at the next meeting," Vanessa said.

***

I could not see Kelvin.

Tried to, but he told the guards to keep me waiting while he spent time with that lady in the same room that we shared. They didn't even recognize me as Alpha Queen anymore.

I was losing my mind already.

I had to scream my head off until he opened the door. He was in a bath robe. The door was open some inches, and I could see the naked figure of the lady on my bed.

"Why are you shouting?" Kelvin demanded.

"At least, tell me what I did wrong, please," I begged him. "Why would you choose to repay me like this?"

He looked at me for a moment. I remembered it was the same way he looked at my father's statue. Then he took hold of my arm and herded me down the hall.

"Come alone to the woods tonight by eleven to where the tweeds are, and you'll get your answer."

Then he left me and was gone.

***

We called the place Tweeds because of the way weeds grew on the trees in that part of the forest. It was strange so the founding fathers decided to call it Tweeds pack, just a combination of trees and weeds.

En route, I wondered many reasons why he had chosen such a spot for us to meet. The only reason that occurred to me was the one; the he could not meet me in public anymore. I was now someone that he could meet in the dark. I was wearing the same clothes I had on me since the crowning ceremony. Couldn't get myself to take them off.

As soon as I stepped through the brush and onto the clearing that surrounded the tweeds, my eyes caught the statue of my father standing right there.

I was shocked.

"What the heck.."

"Surprised to find it sitting here?" said a voice. I looked at that direction as saw a tall man leaning against a tweed.

"Who the heck are you?"

"Kelvin's beta," he said.

"And where is he?"

"Soon be here. Just making sure you're alone."

"Why won't I be alone?" I asked.

He said nothing. Just stared at me with dark eyes under the moonlight. It made me uncomfortable. And why the heck would Kelvin want to make sure that I was all alone?

I found out my answer soon enough when something sharp plunged into my side. I looked and it was a silver knife. And the hand that did it was Kelvin's .
