Chapter 1 BETRAYAL BENEATH THE MOON

New Beginnings and Betrayal

The packhouse's great hall was alive with activity. Glasses clinked, laughter resounded, and the aroma of honeyed wine and roasting meat filled the air. I should have been pleased to be the Luna of the Silver Moon Pack, standing in the middle of it all. However, something felt off.

My fingers clenched around my glass's fragile stem. All eyes were on me as the ceremonial toast was about to start.

Lyra stood next to me and said, "You look nervous." She smiled warmly, but there was something in her eyes that I couldn't identify.

"Do I?" I said, suppressing a little chuckle. "Perhaps it's the gravity of the situation."

She brushed a stray hair off my cheek as she drew closer. "Nadia, you'll be all right. You own this evening.

I should have been reassured by her comments, but they didn't. For years, Lyra had been my closest friend and confidante throughout all of Luna's difficulties. But something about her tone tonight made my stomach turn.

I raised my glass in response and said, "Thank you." I ignored my uneasiness when the wine's harsh flavor met my lips. I couldn't afford to spoil this celebratory evening with pointless concerns.

I said to the audience, "Tonight, we celebrate strength and unity." The Silver Moon Pack has an unbreakable connection. We all rise together in the moonlight.

I grinned as cheers broke out, despite my clammy palms. Across the room, my mate and Alpha, Aiden, stood with an enigmatic face. After a brief period of looking at me, he moved to talk to our Beta, Damon.

A shiver went down my spine as Damon grinned while whispering something to Aiden. Damon didn't have my trust. His movements and the way his eyes lingered on power seemed too deliberate. I was forced to accept him, however, since Aiden appreciated his devotion.

Lyra nudged me gently and said, "Drink." "After all, it's your toast."

I raised the glass to my lips once again and nodded. This time, the wine was sweeter, but I was paused by a strong metallic aftertaste.

"Is everything okay?" Lyra asked in a lighthearted tone, but her eyes were fixed on me.

"Yes," I said hastily, overcoming the odd feeling. "I'm all right."

However, I wasn't.

The space started to get hazy. My knees swayed under me, and my heart raced. I extended my hand and grasped the table's edge, but my fingers were numb.

"Lyra..." I could hardly raise my voice above a whisper.

As I staggered, she grabbed me with a solid, firm hold. Her face was near mine, and I briefly believed I saw a glimmer of victory in her eyes.

Her voice was so quiet that only I could hear her whisper, "You were never meant to lead."

"What?" My head was whirling, but I was having trouble understanding what she was saying.

I saw Damon walking toward me, his face composed and uninterested. His lips curled into a chilly grin as he drew closer.

Just "Goodbye, Luna," he said.

I was enveloped by darkness.

I awoke to the gentle, rhythmic sound of a river in the distance. My limbs felt heavy and disjointed, yet my body felt weightless.

"Where am I?" My voice echoed in the silent air as I whispered.

The world was luminous as I opened my eyes. The air was heavy with a reassuring warmth, and blue blossoms glistened in a silvery light.

"Nadia."

I turned to see a person moving forward, and the voice was soft yet strong. She was dazzling, with eyes full of old knowledge and silver hair that flowed like liquid light.

I dropped to my knees and said, "Moon Goddess."

She said, "Rise, child," in a loving but authoritative voice. "Your story does not end here, even though you have been betrayed."

My eyes filled with tears. "They poisoned me," I said. Why, Lyra... Damon?

"Because greed and envy grew in their hearts," she said. "You obstructed their pursuit of power."

Her remarks were profound. My closest pal, Lyra. One reliable Beta is Damon. I wasn't sure how to handle the hurt of their treachery.

"However, why am I here?" My voice trembled as I asked. "Why didn't I?"

With penetrating eyes, she completed for me, "Die?" "Because your adventure is far from done. Nadia, the moon has plans for you. Plans that call on you to get back up and go again.

I gasped as I glanced down at myself. I saw hands that weren't mine; they were thin, strange, and had little knuckle scars. I clambered over to the edge of a neighboring tiny pool and gazed at the water's reflection.

It wasn't my face that was peering back. Sharp eyes, dark hair, and a face I didn't know.

"How did you harm me?" Panic building in my chest, I sobbed.

She said, "You have been given another chance." "You are no longer Silver Moon Pack member Nadia, Luna. You are Iris, a rebel whose fate is connected to the moon.

"A rebel?" The term seemed unclean and alien. Why would you act in this way? Why don't you simply let me pass away?

She said, "Because your pack still needs you." Not as the lady they deceived, however. You will discover the truth, reveal the falsehoods, and recover what was taken from you in your role as Iris.

I shook my head and mumbled, "I can't." "They won't recognize me. Aiden refuses to.

Her eyes became softer. Even if Aiden doesn't comprehend it, he will sense your presence. Have faith in the connection that the moon has bestowed on you.

I felt a mixture of optimism and rage at what she said. My partner, Aiden, had not kept me safe. However, the idea of meeting him once more and helping him comprehend what had transpired sparked something within me.

"How can I go about doing this?" With a hint of urgency in my voice, I asked.

"You'll discover your inner strength," she added. However, be advised that the road ahead is dangerous. Your adversaries won't stop fighting. They'll try to ruin you once again.

The light around her dimmed as her form started to disappear.

One last echo of her voice said, "Rise, child of the moon." "You have a long way to go."

The ethereal radiance had vanished by the time I woke up. The air felt chilly on my skin, and the surrounding woodland was gloomy. My body was stronger than before, but it also felt weird and alien.

I gently sat up and pressed my palms into the wet ground. I recognized the face of Iris that I had seen in the sea.

Anger, anguish, and questions raced through my head, but one idea stood out above the others. I had to return.

Iris, a renegade with nothing to lose and everything to fight for, rather than Nadia, the gullible Luna who had been deceived.

I balled my fists, a fire burning in my chest at the weight of their treachery. I had been let down by Lyra, Damon, and even Aiden. They believed they had ruined me.

They were mistaken.

I was startled out of my reverie by a stir in the woods. The hair on the back of my neck stood on edge as I looked about in the darkness, my heart pounding. Then I saw them, two bright yellow eyes in the darkness, observing me.

I paused as a rumbling growl reverberated across the air.

I wasn't alone myself.

Chapter 2 RETURN TO THE PACK

Second Chances

Before me, the forest went on forever, the thick trees whispering secrets in the refreshing wind. Every step I took hurt my body, and I felt the weight of fatigue dragging me down. The allure of the Silver Moon Pack's boundaries was too great to ignore, even if I had no clue how far I had gone.

Once my home and haven, the pack was now a battleground that I had to negotiate cautiously. I was no longer the Luna they knew as Iris. Rogues were seldom welcomed, and I was a stranger.

I staggered into an open space as the trees became thinner. With a shaky, broken gasp, I collapsed to my knees as my legs failed me.

"Just stop there!"

I felt a shiver go down my spine because of the harsh, authoritative voice. A patrol of wolves emerged from the darkness as I glanced up, their postures prepared for battle and their gaze cautious.

There was one in particular, towering, broad-shouldered, and exuding power. Aiden.

The world seemed to stop for a second as his gaze met mine. He had a chilly, aloof look on his face, yet his eyes seemed to be looking for something.

His voice was calm but forceful as he inquired, "What are you doing here, rogue?"

I coughed, exaggerating how tired I was. "I've spent days running. I'm not trying to hurt anybody. Please... All I need is a place to sleep.

His sharp eyes scanned me as he took a step closer. I kept my head down, hiding my face behind my matted hair.

With an unflinching tone, he said, "You've crossed Silver Moon Pack territory." "We don't take that lightly."

"I understand," I said, my voice shaking. However, I was at a loss. I'm alone myself.

Aiden's mouth clenched. His wolves were waiting for his order, and the tension in the air was evident. His eyes narrowed as if he was attempting to place me, and he seemed to pause.

His tone softened a little as he questioned, "Why were you running?"

"I..." Knowing that this was a crucial time, I hesitated. "They were pursuing me. They turned against me, my group.

Not all of it was a lie.

Did something spark in Aiden's eyes-pity? Acknowledgment? I was unable to tell.

One of the patrol members stepped up and stated, "Alpha, we can't trust her." She is an outlaw.

He was silenced as Aiden held out a hand. "I'll determine what we can and cannot rely on." His eyes were impenetrable as he turned back to face me. "You'll accompany us. However, if you even slightly cross the line...

I lowered my head and hurriedly responded, "I won't." "I'm grateful."

The great building of the packhouse, which seemed both familiar and unfamiliar, loomed in the distance. Recollections of calm evenings with Aiden, council chamber sessions, and laughing in the hallways filled my heart with pain. It seemed like a stranger's house now, however.

The mood was different inside. An edge of anxiety had taken the place of the cohesion and affection I had known. Wolves walked deliberately, their eyes alert and cautious.

I felt the weight of every look as I was led into the main hall. Like a shadow, whispers trailed behind me.

"Who is she?"

"Why is a rogue being allowed entry by the Alpha?"

"She ought not to be present."

I let the whispering wash over me as I kept my eyes down. Naturally, they didn't recognize me. Why would they? I was simply a foreigner to them, an outlaw who didn't belong.

With his voice rising over the din, Aiden added, "Take her to the guest quarters." "I'll take care of this later."

"Yes, Alpha."

I saw the magnificent staircase that went to the top stories as I was being brought away. Lyra was coming down, looking as immaculate as ever. With her head held high as if she owned the area, she wore a beautiful lavender dress that hugged her body.

Since she did.

Now she was Luna.

My blood boiled at the sight of her, but I made myself remain composed. I had to keep my feelings to myself. Not quite yet.

Although the room I was assigned was small and far from the opulence I was used to as Luna, it was sufficient. I gazed at the moonlight coming in through the window while perched on the edge of the bed.

I glanced up as the door cracked open and Aiden entered. Leaning against the door with his arms folded, he shut it behind him.

His voice was firm and quiet as he questioned, "Why did you come here?"

I tried to maintain a neutral face as I looked him in the eye. "I informed you. There was nowhere else for me to go.

He took a step closer and said, "You could have gone anywhere." However, you selected this bundle. Why?

My chest was thumping with my heart. Was he feeling anything? Did he recognize me in any way?

I improvised, "I heard stories." About the strength of this pack. Secure. I reasoned that maybe you would allow me to remain.

His keen gaze pierced mine as he examined me. I had the impression that he was seeking the truth by removing the layers of my façade.

At last, he warned in a chilly tone, "Avoid trouble." "Rogue, I don't trust you. Not quite yet.

I lowered my eyes and said gently, "I understand."

He stayed a little longer, then turned and walked out of the room. I drew a trembling breath as the door clicked behind him.

I was permitted to explore the communal areas the next morning, although under close monitoring. I walked down the corridors with my head down, watching the group.

The alterations were quickly apparent. Wolves moved swiftly and deliberately, whispering in low tones. The pack seemed to be on edge all the time, and the tension was evident.

Lyra's impact could be seen everywhere. Her presence demanded attention as her laughter reverberated through the hallways. With a mixture of terror and reverence in their eyes, wolves bowed before her.

Damon was the next person.

He was standing at the head of a table with other Betas when I noticed him in the council chamber. His tone was acerbic and calculating, and he spoke with authority. He possessed more authority than he deserved, and his presence overshadowed even Aiden's.

I no longer recognized the pack as a family. With Damon and Lyra at its core, it had turned into something colder and more inflexible.

I sensed that someone was watching me as I made my way back to my room. I turned to see Lyra standing at the end of the corridor with her head slightly cocked and her arms crossed.

Her heels clicked on the wood floor as she walked steadily closer.

Her tone was light, but her eyes were piercing as she continued, "You're the rogue everyone's talking about." "What's your name?"

"Iris," I replied, maintaining a steady tone.

Although it didn't reach her eyes, she grinned. "An intriguing name. And Iris, what has brought you to our pack?

I looked her in the eye and replied, "Just looking for a place to belong."

For a brief time, her face wavered. There was a change in her eye's suspicions. Acknowledgment?

She smiled again and added, "Well, I hope you find what you're looking for."

Her lavender dress swayed with every step as she left. A smile tugged at the edges of my lips as I watched her go.

"You don't know who I am yet, do you?" I said to myself.

However, you will.

I saw Aiden observing from a dark corner as I made my way back to my room. His dark, inquisitive gaze followed Lyra before turning to me.

Chapter 3 SPARKS OF SUSPICIOUS

Deception and Identity

That morning was quieter than normal in the packhouse, but it wasn't reassuring. Like the quiet before a storm, it was heavy.

I was sitting on the side of my bed when there was a loud, authoritative knock. The door opened and Aiden entered before I could respond.

I tried to hide my nervousness by mumbling, "Good morning to you, too."

He didn't answer. Rather, his gaze skimmed over me, evaluating. He urged, "Come with me," in a tone that left no space for disagreement.

Every step I took echoed in the empty hall as I followed him. He ushered me into a little office that seemed menacing despite its lack of furnishings. Leaning against the door with his arms folded, Aiden shut it behind us.

He gestured to the chair across from his desk and said, "Sit."

I sank into the seat and obeyed after hesitating. I could feel the weight of his unwavering, penetrating stare bearing down on me.

He started by saying, "Let's cut the pleasantries." "What brought you here, and who are you?"

I pretended to be perplexed and blinked. "As I said, I'm Iris, a renegade seeking refuge. There is nowhere else for me to go.

His voice was low yet piercing as he said, "Rogues don't just stumble onto pack territory without a reason." Furthermore, they don't live as long as you say they do. Therefore, let me ask you again: who are you?

Despite my racing heart, I maintained a bland demeanor. I said steadily, "I'm not sure what you want me to say." "I've already been honest with you."

He leaned forward with his hands on the desk between us as his eyes narrowed. "You're telling lies."

The charge lingered, and I made myself maintain my composure. "I'm not."

He continued in a softer but no less forceful tone, "You don't act like a rogue." "When someone challenges you, you don't bat an eye. You're not afraid. For someone who has spent their whole life running, it is not typical.

I looked him in the eye and shrugged. "Perhaps I'm just more adept than most at hiding it."

His jaw was clenched as he regarded me for a long time. "You're concealing something," he eventually remarked. "I sense it." I leaned forward a little and whispered hastily, "I'm not a threat." "I promise that I am not here to hurt anybody. All I want is an opportunity to start fresh.

He took a while to reply. Rather, he stood up straight and crossed his arms once again. Finally, he responded, "All right." "You may remain for the time being. But be aware that I will be observing you.

I answered, "Thank you," but his words seemed more like a threat than a gesture of goodwill.

He paused before stepping out after turning and opening the door. "And, Iris?"

"Yes?"

"Don't make me feel bad about this."

I needed to get my thoughts straightened out after the grilling. Aiden's assumptions were way too accurate, and the atmosphere in that room had been oppressive.

I moved silently and lightly as I made my way through the packhouse. There were a lot of rooms and halls in the building that I knew quite well. However, it seemed strange to be here as Iris almost like stepping into someone else's memories.

I heard sounds coming from the council chamber, so I stopped outside. Curiosity overcame me, and the door was open. When I looked through the crevice and saw who was within, I gasped.

Damon and Lyra.

Their voices were harsh yet low, and they stood near. I strained to hear what they had to say as I leaned in.

With an irritated tone, Lyra said, "She's still sniffing around." "I don't believe her."

"Calm down," Damon said with ease. "She's just a rogue. Soon enough, Aiden will find it out and send her on her way.

Lyra narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms. Could she be more than a rogue? What if she has some knowledge?

"She doesn't," Damon said contemptuously. Furthermore, it wouldn't matter even if she did. We have already triumphed.

Lyra grinned and eased her stance a little. "You're correct. Yes, we were victorious. Nobody had any suspicions about Nadia's disappearance.

My blood boiled as I heard my name on her lips. It was all I could do not to scream into the room as my hands clenched at my sides.

"And now, I'm Luna," Lyra said, her voice brimming with contentment. I am respected by the pack. They come after me. I've won loyalty that Nadia could never hope to command.

Damon laughed. "I regret that she was so unsophisticated. made everything too simple.

I had heard enough. I couldn't afford to lose control of my wrath, even as it threatened to swallow me. Not quite yet.

My foot snagged on the rug's edge as I turned to go, and the sound reverberated across the corridor.

"What was that?" I froze at the sharpness of Lyra's voice.

I waited while holding my breath. Damon paused, then said. Most likely, just one of the patrols. Don't stress about it.

I didn't stick around to hear what they had to say. I hurried back to my room, making sure my footsteps were quiet. Their comments kept coming back to me, and my mind was racing.

They believed they had triumphed. They believed they were secure.

They were mistaken.

The moonlight was now softly shining through the windows, making the passageways darker. I couldn't go directly to my room, even though I should have. My feelings were too erratic and unfiltered.

I had to breathe.

The fresh wind calmed my racing thoughts as I slipped out a side door and into the cold night. I could see the woodland in front of me, its shadows appealing and deep.

How come you're out here?

I was surprised by the voice and turned to find Aiden standing behind me. His eyes were keen and inquisitive, yet his face was inscrutable.

My heart accelerated as I hurriedly added, "I couldn't sleep." "All I needed was some fresh air."

He moved closer and said, "At this hour?"

"Yes," I said, refusing to back down. "Is that an issue?"

I could feel the weight of his scrutiny from the intensity of his stare. "You've been moving stealthily," he said in a low voice.

I started to refute it, but then he was in front of me, backing me up against the wall with his hands on my arms.

With a roar, he shouted, "Who are you?"

My heart raced in my chest as I gazed up at him. His presence, his fragrance, and his closeness were overpowering. I momentarily lost my ability to breathe.

My voice trembled as I eventually replied, "I told you." "My name is Iris."

He said, his grasp a little tighter, "Don't lie to me." You've been behaving strangely ever since you got here. What do you have to conceal?

I met his eyes and emphasized, "I'm not hiding anything."

As his gaze swept over mine, I briefly believed I saw a glimpse of something recognition.

He repeated, "You're lying," but this time his tone was gentler, almost unsure.

I didn't answer, couldn't respond. The air was heavy with unsaid facts, and the tension between us was oppressive.

His voice was no more than a whisper as he repeated, "Who are you?"

We were stopped by footsteps, and Aiden let go of me, taking a step back as one of his patrolmen came up.

The wolf nodded politely and said, "Alpha." "A problem exists at the southern border. You are necessary to us.

After a last, inquisitive glance at me, Aiden turned to follow the patrol member.

With a mixture of comfort and fear, I watched him go, my chest constricted.

He was approaching the truth too closely.
