Chapter 1 The price of betrayal.

The silence in the grand hall was suffocating. Valentina De Luca stood in the center, her spine straight, hands clenched at her sides, heart pounding like a war drum against her ribs. She refused to look afraid. Not in front of them.

The room was filled with men who thrived on power, who spoke in threats rather than words. And at the head of it all sat him.

Adrian Costa.

The Devil of New York.

His reputation preceded him, a man as lethal as he was untouchable. They whispered stories about him in hushed voices. A man who ruled the underworld with an iron grip, who killed without hesitation, whose name alone sent weaker men running.

But Valentina wasn't weak.

She lifted her chin as her father was dragged to his knees beside her, his blood staining the pristine marble floor. He groaned, clutching his side where one of Adrian's men had beaten him into submission.

"Do you have anything to say, De Luca?" Adrian's voice was smooth, deceptively calm. The kind of calm that sent chills down a person's spine, the kind that came before a storm.

Her father coughed, spitting blood onto the floor, and when he finally spoke, his voice was hoarse. "Have mercy, Costa. I...."

"Mercy?" Adrian repeated, amusement flickering across his sharp features. He leaned back in his chair, dark eyes unreadable. "You stole from me. You thought you could gamble with my money, run from your debts, and what...? hope I wouldn't notice?"

Valentina's stomach twisted.

She had begged her father not to take that risk. Had pleaded with him to stay out of the Costa family's way. But foolish pride and greed had driven him straight into the lion's den, and now, she was standing in its jaws.

"I swear, I'll pay you back," her father rasped. "Give me more time."

Adrian exhaled slowly, shaking his head as if disappointed. "Time is a luxury I don't grant men like you, De Luca."

The room tensed.

The guards flanking the walls adjusted their stance, waiting for the inevitable order. The moment Adrian Costa would sentence her father to death.

Valentina took a step forward before she could stop herself. "Kill him, and you get nothing."

A heavy silence fell.

Adrian's gaze snapped to her, sharp and assessing. He didn't speak, but the weight of his stare was suffocating.

Valentina swallowed hard, forcing herself to continue. "You want to make an example out of him. I understand that. But if you kill him, you're still at a loss. The debt he owes you, it's gone."

A flicker of amusement crossed Adrian's face. "And what exactly are you offering me, bambolina?"

Doll. The nickname sent a shiver down her spine.

She lifted her chin. "A trade."

Her father's weak voice came from beside her. "Valentina, no..."

She ignored him, her focus solely on the man in front of her. "Let him go, and take me instead."

A murmur rippled through the room.

Adrian's expression didn't change, but something dark flickered in his gaze. He studied her, taking in her defiance, the way she held herself despite the fear curling in her stomach.

"You would sell yourself to save him?" His voice was quiet, unreadable.

Valentina forced herself to nod.

She didn't expect him to laugh. It was low, cold, filled with something she couldn't quite decipher.

"You assume I'd even want you," he said smoothly.

Heat rushed to her face, but she kept her expression neutral. "You want power. Leverage. A reason for the De Luca name to serve you instead of falling into enemy hands."

Adrian watched her for a long, tense moment before rising from his seat.

The room went still.

He walked toward her, slow and measured, his presence suffocating. When he finally stood before her, he reached out, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

She didn't flinch.

His touch was light, deceptively gentle. "You're bold," he murmured. "But do you truly understand what you're offering?"

She held his gaze. "I understand."

His thumb brushed her cheek, and her stomach twisted with unease.

Then, just as suddenly, he dropped his hand and turned to his men. "Take De Luca and dump him outside the city. If he comes near my territory again, put a bullet between his eyes."

Her father gasped. "No...."

Two guards lifted him, dragging him toward the door. Valentina didn't dare look at him. If she did, she might lose the last bit of strength she had left.

Adrian's voice was calm when he spoke again. "Valentina stays."

And just like that, her fate was sealed.

......

Hours Later...

Valentina sat in a dimly lit room, her fingers gripping the silk fabric of the dress she had been given. She hadn't moved since they left her here, the reality of what had just happened sinking into her bones like ice.

She had made a deal with the devil. And now, she belonged to him.

The door creaked open, and she stiffened.

Adrian entered, dressed in a crisp black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his forearms dusted with faint scars. He looked at her as though she were something to be studied, examined.

"You made a reckless decision today," he said, shutting the door behind him.

She didn't respond.

He tilted his head. "Tell me, Valentina... Do you regret it?"

She finally looked up, meeting his gaze head-on. "Not yet."

A slow, dark smile curved his lips. "You will."

A chill ran down her spine.

She had walked willingly into a cage, and now, she had no choice but to survive the beast inside it.

Chapter 2 The Devil Shows No Mercy

The air in Adrian Costa's private estate was thick with silence, the kind that suffocated, that made men hesitate before speaking.

Valentina sat in the corner of the lavish study, dressed in a silk robe someone had left for her. The cold from the marble floors seeped into her skin, but she refused to show weakness. She had no idea what Adrian expected from her if he planned to use her as a pawn, a prisoner, or something far worse.

But she didn't have to wait long to find out.

The doors swung open with a force that rattled the room. Two men dragged a third inside a man beaten to the point of near unconsciousness, his face a mess of blood and swelling. His expensive suit was ripped, his hands bound behind his back.

Valentina stiffened.

Adrian stepped in behind them, the same eerie calm radiating from him as always, but there was something different this time. Something cold. Something lethal.

He didn't acknowledge her. His entire focus was on the man kneeling before him.

"Marco," Adrian murmured, adjusting the cuffs of his black shirt. "You disappoint me."

The man, Marco, coughed, spitting blood onto the floor. "Boss, I....I didn't....."

A sharp snap echoed through the room. Adrian moved so fast Valentina barely saw it....his hand connecting brutally with Marco's jaw, sending his already battered body crumpling forward.

She flinched despite herself.

Adrian crouched, gripping Marco's hair and yanking his head back, forcing him to meet his gaze. "You thought I wouldn't find out?" His voice was almost gentle. Almost.

"I swear, I....I didn't mean to......."

"Lies." Adrian sighed as if he were truly disappointed. "You've been skimming money from my shipments for months. And yet, you sit here and insult my intelligence by pretending otherwise."

Marco whimpered, his entire body trembling. "Please... I have a family......"

Adrian's grip tightened. "You should have thought about that before you stole from me."

Valentina's stomach twisted. She had grown up around men like Adrian, men who ruled with fear, who handled betrayal with swift, merciless retribution.

But watching Adrian now, seeing the way he enjoyed it.....that was different.

A gun was placed into Adrian's waiting hand, one of his men passing it to him like it was routine. Like it was nothing.

And maybe, to Adrian, it was.

He stood, towering over Marco, the barrel of the gun pressing against the man's forehead.

Valentina's heart pounded.

"You don't have to do this," she said before she could stop herself.

The room fell into silence.

Adrian turned his head slightly, finally looking at her. His dark eyes gleamed with something unreadable. Annoyance? Curiosity? Amusement?

"This is mafia business, bambolina," he said smoothly. "You don't get a say."

Valentina clenched her fists. "If he repays what he stole, you don't have to....."

Adrian's laugh was low, dark. "And if I let him live, what does that say about me? That I'm weak?"

"No....."

"That I forgive betrayal?"

She swallowed. She had stepped into dangerous territory, and she knew it.

Adrian tilted his head, considering her for a long moment. Then, without breaking eye contact, he pulled the trigger.

A deafening gunshot rang through the room.

Marco crumpled, lifeless. Blood pooled beneath him, seeping into the cracks of the marble floor.

Valentina's breath caught in her throat.

Adrian exhaled slowly, like he had just finished handling an inconvenience. He turned to one of his men. "Clean this up."

His guard nodded, already moving to drag the body away.

Adrian walked toward Valentina, his movements unhurried, the gun still loose in his grip. When he reached her, he crouched down so they were at eye level.

She forced herself to hold his gaze, but she knew he saw the horror in her eyes.

"Do you understand now?" he murmured.

She said nothing.

He reached out, running his knuckles over her cheek, the cold metal of the gun brushing against her skin. "This is the world you're in now, Valentina. My world."

Her pulse thundered in her ears.

"You wanted to play with the devil," he whispered. "I hope you're ready to burn."

Chapter 3 A Cage Built of Gold

Valentina had never known what it felt like to be truly powerless, until now.

The mansion was lavish, an empire of wealth and power, but to her, it was nothing more than a beautifully decorated prison. She paced the length of her room, mind racing. She had spent hours testing doors, windows, and hallways, searching for an exit, but Adrian Costa had thought of everything.

No way out. Not yet.

She clenched her fists. She wouldn't let him win.

A knock at the door made her stiffen. Before she could respond, the door swung open, and Adrian stepped inside, exuding an air of effortless control. He was dressed in black, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing a hint of inked skin.

"Settling in, bambolina?" he asked, his voice laced with amusement.

Valentina narrowed her eyes. "If this is your idea of hospitality, I'd rather take my chances elsewhere."

Adrian chuckled, stepping closer. "Your chances elsewhere would've ended with you in a ditch."

She refused to be intimidated. "And what? I should be grateful that you're keeping me locked up instead?"

His smirk faded. "I'm keeping you alive."

Valentina scoffed. "I don't need your protection."

Adrian's gaze darkened. "You don't get a choice."

He took a slow step toward her, closing the distance between them. Valentina's pulse quickened, but she forced herself to meet his stare without flinching. She would not let him see her fear.

"Do you know how many men would pay to get their hands on you right now?" he murmured. "Men who don't play by any rules."

Valentina lifted her chin. "And you do?"

His lips twitched, but there was no humor in his expression. "No, bambolina. But I do have my own set of rules. And right now, you live by them."

Her stomach tightened. "What do you want from me?"

Adrian reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. His touch was surprisingly gentle, but it only made her skin crawl. "For now? Compliance."

Valentina slapped his hand away, her defiance burning bright. "I'll never bow to you."

Adrian laughed, but there was a dangerous edge to it. "Then this will be fun."

A Test of Will

Valentina refused to eat the dinner placed in front of her that night. The long dining table stretched between her and Adrian, the candlelight casting flickering shadows across his face.

"You're playing a dangerous game," he said, swirling his wine in his glass.

She stabbed her fork into the plate but didn't take a bite. "You can't starve me into submission."

Adrian smirked. "Who said I would?"

Before she could respond, a side door opened, and Rosa entered, her expression unreadable. The older woman set a fresh dish in front of Valentina, her favorite meal. The smell alone made her stomach clench in betrayal.

Her eyes snapped to Adrian. "How do you......"

"I make it a habit to know everything about the people under my roof," he said smoothly. "Eat."

Valentina gritted her teeth. She wanted to refuse, to maintain even the smallest piece of control, but her body was weak. She hadn't eaten since she was taken.

Her fingers tightened around the fork. She took a slow, deliberate bite, locking eyes with Adrian as she chewed. If he thought he had won some small battle, she would make sure he knew otherwise.

"You may have caged me," she said, voice steady. "But I'm not broken."

Adrian leaned back in his chair, studying her. "No. You're not."

A silence stretched between them. Then, without another word, he rose from his chair and walked away, leaving Valentina alone with a plate that suddenly felt heavier than before.

A Key in the Darkness

That night, sleep evaded her. The walls of her room felt suffocating, the air too thick with unspoken threats. Valentina sat by the window, staring at the iron gates of the estate.

She needed to get out. But how?

A soft knock startled her. The door cracked open, and Rosa stepped inside, her eyes flickering with something unreadable.

"You shouldn't push him too far," Rosa warned, her voice low.

Valentina frowned. "Why do you care?"

Rosa hesitated before sighing. "Because I've seen what happens when people cross him."

Valentina studied the older woman. There was something in her tone, a weight of past regrets.

"Why do you stay?" Valentina asked softly.

Rosa's lips pressed into a thin line. "Because for some, there is no leaving."

A chill ran down Valentina's spine. Was that to be her fate as well? A life spent trapped in a world she wanted no part of?

No.

She wouldn't accept that.

Rosa took a step closer, slipping something into Valentina's palm, a small key. Valentina's eyes widened, her breath catching.

"Be careful," Rosa whispered. "Freedom isn't always what it seems."

Then she turned and left, the door closing behind her.

Valentina stared at the key in her palm, her heart pounding.

A way out.

But what would Adrian do when he found out?
