VANESSA Pain. Pain is something no one will ever get used to, you can never understand it because of how fast its shades can change. Coming from someone who had lived 13 years of nothing but pain and suffering, I haven't gotten used to it, cause it still scares me to the guts. Every minute I dread picking up another thorny rose, the pain associated with it is sharp and precise, but pain is pain, and it can't be disguised in any other form. "Get on with it, slave." A sharp kick connected with my stomach and briefly seized air from my lungs. My elbow collided with the ground stopping me from falling face flat. "S...Sorry." I stuttered an apology and bowed. I took a deep breath and restored my stance, my hand reached out to another rose and I encircled my fingers around it. With a sharp force I snapped it out of the soil and whimpered at the pang I felt. Blood dripped out of my hand as expected. I used my free hand to remove the rose from my hand and placed it in the basket. A few thorns were left in my palm and I had to get it out if I wanted to heal. But a glare from the warriors made me think otherwise, I had to serve my punishment as bestowed or else I would get another without recovering from this one.

Chapter 1 PROLOGUE

Prologue

VANESSA

No living being would ever expect their pain, sorrows, and suffering, to begin on any special day. Sadly this was my reality, and it wasn't just any special day. It was my birthday.

It was 6 pm that evening, I had been indoors all day, and my parents were out working. I was home alone with the nannies and maids waiting for their arrival.

I was turning five, and my parents had never forgotten my birthday, but that day they were late.

On an average level, nothing less would be expected from a billionaire businessman and woman, but I wasn't an average kid, I was the daughter of Lucien and Saphena Jordan, two most mysterious people ever known.

We lived amongst humans and Rogues; The other type of werewolves as my parents used to say. Our true identities were hidden from humans but we managed to live normal lives.

To the world my parents were elites, but to me, they were my role models.

Brave, strong, confident, and hardworking, I admired them so much that they seemed to be the only people to exist in my life. But that fateful night, I was disappointed that they loved their occupations more than they loved me.

Well, not until I heard my mother's melodic voice sing out the ever-known tunes

"Happy birthday, happy birthday...."

"Happy birthday to you."

"Happy 5th birthday Vanessa." My Mom and Dad squealed at my face, my Dad held a large decorated box and my Mom held a beautiful princess cake.

"You didn't forget!" I yelled excitedly, I rose to my feet in a swift motion, my eyes not leaving both the present and the cake.

"Yes darling, and we are sorry for making you feel bad about today, but it was all part of the plan. Daddy got you a lovely present."

My dad came and sat next to me on my bed, he pecked my forehead and placed the medium-sized box in my tiny hands.

I licked my lips in anticipation and tore the box open, my eyes came in contact with a dark metallic object, it resembled that of my Dad's Fiery Split Blade dagger, the one he uses in training. I reached into the box and took it out, running my hands through the thick and sharp metal, my tiny lips curled into a satisfied smirk.

"Oh, Mothers!!!" My Mom gasped so loud it startled me.

"Lucien!" Mom glared hard at Dad, her eyes asking the necessary questions.

"What?" Dad nonchalantly looked at Mom and back at me. "Vanessa, Daddy is giving you his very own dagger, I feel that you have come of age to have one, and mine in particular." Dad smiled, caressing my hair.

I smiled happily and held on to the dagger tight, it now belonged to me. For a kid my age, there would have been a serious outburst, but instead, I loved it, because I was no ordinary kid.

"Least I forget, I had a scabbard made for my princess. It's convenient to keep your dagger strapped along with you." Dad reached into the box and brought out the strap he was talking about.

"So cool Dad! Does this mean I get to join you and Mom when you practice?" I asked with hopeful glimmers.

"Yes my love, you can join us for practice as from now on..."

I didn't let my Dad finish, I excitedly added." And the bedroom practice is too right, I get to join that, don't I?" I asked and my parents passed each other a weird look and shook their heads in disapproval, Mom's cheeks turned red like she was stung by a bee.

I wondered why they refused but forgot about it when Mom placed the cake aside and took out a small decorated box from her black pants.

I had failed to notice my parents were fully dressed, and my mother was wearing her favorite Sunny yellow blouse.

"Essa, it's time for you to see what I got you." Mom took my hand in hers and placed the box on it. She looked at the box confidently and nodded at me to open it up.

I sat on the bed and opened the box, my smile died the moment I saw what she had given to me.

"Another bracelet?" I whined dropping the box on the bed, caring less about what I saw in it.

"Essa," Mom said almost inaudibly, her cheerful voice saddened out immediately.

"What!" I snapped at her, folding my arms.

"Vanessa, don't be rude to your mother, she made that bracelet with so much love, when will you learn to accept it." Dad's calm voice turned strict within seconds.

Mom raised her hand to stop him from scolding me, I took my gaze elsewhere staring at anything but my Mom's sad purple eyes.

"I am sorry." I stared at my fingers feeling guilty. Mom joined me in bed and hugged me so tight, I thought I wouldn't be getting a hug ever again.

"It's okay baby, I am sorry too, I should have gotten you something better. Forgive me, my child." Mom pecked my forehead and softly pinched my chubby cheeks.

I smiled and did the same, softly pinching her cheeks. My Mom happened to be the best jewelry designer in all of California, but gifting your child every piece you make sounds boring, especially when it has a cause to fulfill.

"I don't need any more protection from these bracelets Mom, I am doing fine without them and soon I will be joining you guys to practice and learn to defend myself, I don't need any more of it. Please."

I pouted trying to look cute but I didn't need to try, not to brag but, I was the cutest child to ever walk the surface of the earth, my beauty and cuteness got me any and everything I wanted, not to mention my unique set of eye colors, I happened to inherit both colors of my parents eyes a mixture of fiery Gold and purple.

"Saphena, Vanessa is right, it's time you stopped with the bracelets, my daughter is strong and brave, she will fight off any difficulty that stands in her way with ease, I believe in her," Dad said almost proudly as if he had already been to my future.

Mom nodded and I noticed she wasn't convinced but still tried to hide it.

"Enough talking for now, Essa, it's time to get ready for our dinner date, I will assist you in getting ready." Mom left for my wardrobe and took out my pink princess dress, she placed it on my bed and also brought out my accessories.

Dad gave us both one last peck before excusing himself from our midst.

Thirty minutes later, I was fully dressed, Mom carefully placed the plastic silver crown on my head and gently patted my cheek.

Mom got up from her knees, she grabbed a hold of my hand.

"Alright time to go downstairs and join Dad, what do you say about that?" I held her hand and we both got out of my bed.

Walking towards the door hand in hand, the door burst open with a really loud bang, Dad stood at the entrance panting hard, his once white shirt was now covered in a red stain.

"Lucien!" Mom gasped and rushed to where he stood, Dad's fiery Gold eyes were now completely black, I watched them talk in hushed tones, and soon my mother's face held the same expression as Dad's.

Mom calmly came to me crouching to my level, her eyes burned with tears but she fought them back, trying to compose words.

The expression on my parent's faces looked familiar. I had seen them in my bedtime story. The three little pigs had the same expression when they were threatened by the big bad wolf.

"Is there a big bad wolf outside our house?" I asked fear crawling up my skin.

Mom looked surprised but shook her head." There's no bad wolf outside, but we can't go outside Essa. I need you to stay here while your Dad and I finish up some urgent work. Whatever happens, Essa, Don't come outside." Mom said almost in a pleading tone.

I nodded not wanting to make a fuse, they weren't looking like my parents anymore, this was exactly how they looked when it was time to practice.

Mom left for the box Dad gifted me, she took out my dagger and the strap. Moments ago she looked like she would kill Dad for exposing me to such a dangerous weapon, but now all I could see in her eyes was determination.

She took my hand and led me to my bed. "Essa...." She paused, gulping hard, her eyes showed how desperate she wanted to tell me the current situation but her mouth did otherwise.

"Dad gave you such a wonderful present, I hope you remember to love and cherish it." She forced a smile and strapped my left thigh, she shoved the dagger into it and tightened it to avoid a loose.

"Mom. I am scared." She sharply gazed at me and shook her head, she helped me get off the bed and crouched to my level.

"There's nothing to be afraid of my love, everything will be alright, now listen to me. If by any chance someone foreign comes in here, use the invisibility cloak just like you learned, all you have to do is concentrate your energy on it and take it to your heart, it's where the supreme spark comes from. Also remember you have amazing skin and no one should touch it except Mom and Dad, right?"

"Yes, Mom."

"Good girl!" Mom whispered her voice hoarse and different.

Chapter 2 PROLOGUE 2

Prologue 2

VANESSA

Mom went back to Dad, they talked in hushed tones again but I didn't pay attention, my eyes were stuck to the tiny flame flying in the direction of my window.

"Mom! I think something is heading towards us." I said but didn't get a response, I turned to see them engrossed in their conversation, they didn't hear me and had no idea something was approaching our house.

I moved towards the window and saw how the Flame multiplied approaching at a definite speed. It was a beautiful sight to behold as the sky darkened until it grew inevitably close.

"ESSA!!!" Mom yelled behind me, but it was too late.

The flames were fire arrows, they invaded my room through the window and burned everything they touched.

Mom's scream and the damage the arrows were doing to my room frightened me beyond words, my legs were rooted to the ground.

I was pulled out of the fire by Dad, and Mom was beside him, they were just as frightened as I was.

Dad held me in his arms, running down the stairs, while I glued myself to him frozen to the bones.

A group of armed men barged in through the door, their expression wasn't friendly and I needed no one to tell me they were the big bad wolf.

"Saphena! Take Vanessa and get out of here, I will hold them off." Dad whispered to Mom and she took me from him and dashed off not looking back.

We passed the back door and got outside, that was when everything dawned on me.

We were not the only ones being attacked, everyone who lived in the rogue community was being brought out of their houses and cluttered, but for what reason?

The screams of pain and agony filled the moonless night, smoke from burning houses, turned into night clouds, blinding the stars.

Mom and I coughed hard choking on the smoke. Mom ran as fast as she could, she tried to get me out of the chaos but it seemed endless. Each path we found ourselves on was worse than the first.

A lot of people lay on the hard concrete not making a move, I assumed they were asleep, but who sleeps in such a disaster?

Mom came to an abrupt pause, the bad men had surrounded us, from every path, they stood with their swords, and a few were in their beast form, I had seen my Dad change a couple of times to practice with Mom, but Mom never changed because she was a witch not a werewolf.

Dad was way bigger than any of the werewolves snarling at my Mom and me.

The bad men took out their bows and arrows directing them at us, my Mom gently placed me down and hid me behind her back.

*Swish*

The arrows were launched at her, and in a swift motion, my Mom's flaming blue sword slit every arrow that came our way.

The bad men were not pleased with the outcome, took out more arrows, and ruthlessly launched at us. The arrows came in surplus and Mom was starting to lose them, a few arrows escaped her sword, but Mom skillfully dodged its hit.

Unfortunately, Mom dodged another arrow and it found its way to my path, piercing its way into my flesh.

"Ahh!" I whimpered, falling to the ground.

"Essa!!!" Mom lost focus and an arrow pierced her shoulder.

She groaned and took it out almost immediately, running towards me. She picked me up and started running in the opposite direction and into the woods.

We successfully got away from the bad men, and Mom placed me down inspecting the arrow in my leg.

"I am so sorry Essa, I couldn't protect you." Mom sobbed. Despite my pain, I reached out to her and wiped her tears.

She smiled and pecked my forehead."I am about to take this out, it's going to hurt a little, but I promise to be here for you." I nodded and closed my eyes.

I felt her hand on my aching wound, and the sharp agonizing pain tore through my body in waves.

"Ahhh!" I screamed and mom quickly pulled me in a tight hug.

"It's okay my love, it's okay." She comforted me, but I couldn't stop crying.

"Let's find your father and get out of here, Okay?" I nodded amidst my pain.

Mom carried me and began racing again, I was slowly becoming weak, and my leg numbed from all the pain.

We arrived back at the battlefield and Mom began her search for Dad.

"Lucien!" Mom suddenly screamed, halting on her steps. The pain in her voice could not be mistaken and it scared me. I tried to look but she held me down.

"Close your eyes, baby, there's nothing to see." She whimpered, increasing my curiosity.

Mom's scream attracted the bad men and they came at us, she fought relentlessly even with me in her arms, but not long we were both on the ground.

"Mom..." I cried reaching out to her, there was so much blood, yet she was still struggling.

She took my hand and slipped off one of the bracelets she was wearing and placed it on my wrist. "Never take this off Essa, Never." She said and then her eyes shot close.

I didn't understand what had just happened, why my mother had chosen to sleep in the middle of such chaos.

I hovered over her body trying to wake her up, but she didn't move an inch. I searched amidst the chaos looking for my father and I saw him lying on the ground like my mother, also sleeping. I crawled towards him and tried to wake him up, but nothing changed.

"Is she the one?" I heard behind me and I turned to see huge men towering over me.

"Yes Alpha Stan, this is their daughter."

"Good. Bundle her up and toss her into the truck. We have some unfinished business to settle."

I didn't want them to take me away, I tried to crawl away, but sometimes hard hit my head and darkness followed.

Chapter 3 PAIN

Chapter 1

VANESSA

Pain.

I crawled to the next rose and encircled my fingers around it. I ignored the current pain and snapped the rose out of the soil again, this time the pain was worse than the first.

I grabbed my bleeding hand and held it to my chest, tears blurred my vision and I let it out, it was unbearable but I didn't say a word.

I took out the rose from my palm and placed it in the basket that had gotten stained from my blood, soon enough the basket would turn red completely.

I had been going for hours, picking a total of a hundred roses but I had five hundred more to go. Maybe I shouldn't have stolen a book from the library, but my curiosity had gotten me a cruel punishment.

I wiped my tears and headed for the next rose, in no time I would be done with it, this should be the least of the punishment I have gotten so far, it's nothing compared to the others.

For the hundred and second time, I encircled my hands around the rose and snapped it out of the soil.

"Hmmm..." I shot my eyes closed absorbing the excruciating pain.

I opened my eyes and took the rose out of my hand, placing it in the basket.

"Sergeant!!!" I heard the hard voices of both warriors and peeked to see them bowing to an approaching figure.

It was Sergeant Gabriel, Head of the pack's warriors. I got up on my shaky feet and mimicked the warriors, bowing my head in the same manner.

"Rise!" His voice was sharp and prudent.

But I knew better, he wasn't referring to me, so I kept my head bowed, staring at my pale feet, stained with my blood.

"Alpha Stan wants the Rogue slave in the courtroom now." Sergeant Gabriel said the urgency in his voice could not be mistaken.

My heart sank to the depth of my stomach, confusion contoured on my face, I wondered why he wanted to see me again.

Each time Alpha Stan asked to see me, torture followed, now he wanted to see me again, twice in one day, what more awaits me.

Or is it about my freedom, he must have realised I turned eighteen two months ago.

"Understood Sergeant!" They chorused.

"You heard what the sergeant said. Move!" One of the warriors screamed in my ears.

I jumped and shakily followed Sergeant Gabriel, and the two warriors were behind my back as we made our way to the courtroom. I anticipated the unknown.

Getting there, I saw my archenemy, Alpha Stan sitting on his throne with the same smug smile I see on his face all the time. He was looking at me as if I was the most annoying thing on earth when he was the most despicable person I've ever met too.

One of the warriors pushed forward and I lost my balance, falling on my knee.

"Hmm!" I whimpered absorbing the pain. I looked up and saw him smirk in satisfaction.

"Are you ready to talk?" He asked the same question as the past thirteen years of my life.

In my head, I screamed NO! But I knew better than to toil with the only opportunity I was getting for such a long time. Freedom.

Alpha Stan promised to let me go when I turned eighteen but in exchange for my father's assets. Only I knew the passcode to everything he worked so hard for.

Was trading my father's legacy for my freedom worth it? Not really, but I had vowed to build it back once I had gotten my freedom. So I replied with the word I had been dreading my whole life.

"Yes."

Alpha Stan broke into a fit of evil laughter, the joy and content in his voice made my blood boil. But I knew better than to get angry.

"Spill already slave, my ears are itching." He groaned like the monster he was.

I inhaled deeply and winced from my aching flesh wounds.

"Family," I said and felt my heart shatter into pieces. Giving out my family's treasure hurt more than every torture I had to go through for years.

Alpha Stan laughed, laughter full of mockery, he looked at Sergeant Gabriel and laughed again. "Do you take me for a joke? Tell me the passcodes now or else..."

I shuddered." I am not lying to you, Alpha Stan. Family is the passcode to all of my father's endorsements."

Alpha Stan frowned, he wasn't pleased with my reply, but I knew he didn't doubt it either.

"I will accept this as the truth, but if I find out that you have lied to me today, Slave, I will rip your throat out."

I heaved a small sigh of relief, thanking the Goddess that he believed me.

"A–And my freedom?" I asked and received a deadly glare in return.

"You will get your freedom..." Alpha Stan paused and turned to Sergeant Gabriel. "Call in Gamma Scarlett." He instructed.

I felt uneasy but tried to calm myself down, finally after thirteen long years, I would be free. Free from mining duties, free from the abusive people of this pack, free from constant pain. Free from torture and free from the monstrous bastard.

Sergeant Gabriel returned with Gamma Scarlett, she bowed to Alpha Stan and stood so elegantly.

She was so beautiful and talented, the strongest warrior in all of Blood Lake, and became the Gamma after she defeated her father in a retirement duel. She's admired by everyone, all the warriors have a crush on her. I admire her so much and wish I could be like her. Sadly we have never conversed before, she's always so busy.

"Scarlett. Welcome!" Alpha Stan grinned and Gamma Scarlett smiled in response.

"Slave!" Alpha Stan called and I glanced at him.

"You will get your freedom, only after you win a duel with Gamma Scarlett." Alpha Stan said and my body vibrated. I wanted to fall to the ground and die, instead, I knelt frozen by what I had just heard.
