Chapter 1 1

Elena Morgan had always felt like an outsider in her small town. It wasn't that she was more reserved than most of her peers and liked reading books or taking solace in nature; there was something more at the core, which she couldn't explain. Of late, the sensation had grown in its intensity. It began subtly, with her feeling that her senses were sharpening to capture smells and sounds others seemed unaware of.

Leaves crinkling over vast distances, the very slightest scent of pine in the breeze, the almost inaudible murmur of conversation-everything was amplified, just like the world had finally turned up the volume in her life.

It was the dreams that troubled her most of all. All this past week she had been in this same dense, moonlit forest every night. She would float gracefully and fast, as never stridden in waking life. But the weirdest thing was that each night there were wolves-a whole pack of them-sitting with what seemed an almost human intelligence in their faces upon hers. She wasn't afraid of them, but their deeper attention unnerved her.

Elena came awake with a jerk that morning to the echo of a wolf's howl in her head. Her heart raced as she sat up, wiping the sweat off her brow. She glanced at her clock-5:00 AM. Too early for most, but she knew she wouldn't be able to go back to sleep. That dream had been so real, the smells of the forest still in her nostrils and cool night air still tingling on her skin.

Elena was feeling restless and found it impossible to stay indoors, so she would take a walk to freshen her head. She donned a hoodie and sneakers and took her phone, slipping out of the house. The air was crisp early in the morning, the sky just starting to lighten, promising another day. She followed on out the edge of town, where the forest began. The well-worn path wound on through the trees, somewhere she'd gone many times to think or get some peace from the everyday noise.

She walked, trying to shake off the sense of dread lingering in her head. The forest today was alive. Leaves rustled, and the faraway call of a bird reached her, somewhere near and far away, the faint trickle of a stream. It was as if the woods whispered to her, drawing her deeper.

Elena lost in thought, had not seen the figure leaning on the trees until she came upon him. With a sudden jerk, she stopped, her breath catching at her throat. He was tall, his dark hair and coat blending in, his demeanour hinting at quiet authority. There was something incongruous about him, standing in this calm of the woods, a shadow in the light.

"Sorry, I didn't see you there," Elena stammered and took a step back. He didn't reply right away, looking at her so intensely that Elena felt a shiver run down her spine. There was something in those eyes-so dark, probing, like they could see right through her.

"Lost?" he finally asked, his voice smooth, fluid. There was something else in his tone, something Elena couldn't quite place.

"N-no, just taking a walk," she said with an attempted casual air. She was panting, and that danger sense crept over her again in waves. She took another step back and almost turned to run, but something stayed her, a weird compulsion that kept her there.

His gaze did soften then, though his expression remained impossible to read. "Be careful in these woods. They are. unpredictable." With this, he turned and walked away, disappearing into the shadows of the trees just as abruptly as he had come.

Elena stood there, her mind racing. Who was this man, and what was it in his words that sent shivers down her spine? She cast a glance around, feeling suddenly alone. The light was creeping in from early morning and created very stretched shadows across the floor of the forest. Elena could only hear the rustle of leaves; it was nearly silent.

Feeling she had enough for one morning, Elena turned to start heading back home. The memory of that strange encounter kept flipping in her mind as she walked home. She couldn't shake off the feeling that he knew something about her, something she didn't understand.

As she neared the forest edge, the buzzing of her phone inside her pocket broke Elena out of her reverie. She drew it out to find Jenna, her best friend, texting to see if Elena was free for breakfast. Elena smiled, feeling grateful for the distraction. She hastily responded and started toward the diner where they usually met.

But as she started off the forest, a feeling that her life was about to turn in ways she couldn't fathom overrode everything else. So now it truly did all seem like different jigsaw puzzle pieces falling into place-the forest, the wolves, the strange man.

As Elena walked down the street, she felt eyes on her. She turned quickly around, but nobody was there. The whispering wind and rustling leaves-it was them. Shaking her head, Elena quickened her step toward the diner; with every step, the feeling got worse.

It was little known to her, but that was only the beginning of her freaky morning encounters. She pushed open the inner door; to Elena's senses, anticipation hung in the air-the same kind that precedes a storm. Storm was brewing, and Elena stood right at the epicentre.

Chapter 2 2

Elena entered the Diner, shaking off the lingering unease of her encounter in the forest. The hum of conversation, the smell of the coffee, all the comforts of reality after her strange morning in the woods, hit her like a warm blanket as she spotted Jenna at their regular booth and waved her over with a broad smile.

"Hey, Elena! I was starting to think you'd slept in," Jenna quipped, her tone light and teasing as Elena slid into the seat across from her.

"Sorry, just had a weird morning," Elena admitted, pasting a smile onto her face as she looked around. The warmth of the diner was a relief and warm compared to the cold forest. She began to relax even though the mysterious man still preyed on her thoughts.

Jenna cocked an eyebrow, clearly interested. "Weird how?"

Elena hesitated, not wanting to sound crazy. Something wasn't right, though. "I met this guy in the woods. He was just...standing there. It was kinda creepy."

Jenna's eyes widened a bit. "Creepy? Like, how?"

"Like he was watching me. And he said something about the woods being unpredictable. I don't know, it just felt strange," Elena explained, trying to keep her voice from shaking.

Jenna looked pensive, but just then the waitress arrived with a new coffee urn and their usual breakfast orders. They tried to push out thoughts that were disturbing as they chattered on about school and future plans, but Elena kept flashing back to the forest and the stranger there.

They dug in and ate for some time until Elena's phone buzzed. She had a text message. She glanced down at it briefly: "You saw him. Why?" It was from an unknown number.

Her heart nearly stopped. The text itself is jerky but with an underlying sense of urgency. She turned to Jenna, who was in mid-sentence, and quickly tapped out the reply, "Who is this?"

Jenna must have noticed that she was distracted because she leaned forward, concerned. "Everything okay?"

"Yeah, just... got a weird message," Elena said, showing her phone.

Jenna's eyebrows furrowed. "Weird, what does it say?"

Elena hesitated before reading the message. "You saw him. Why?"

Jenna's eyes grew wide. "Ew, that is so creepy. Do you know who it might be?"

Elena shook her head, and her stomach twisted because she had no idea. Could be a psycho.

Before Jenna could say anything further in comfort, Elena's phone buzzed yet again. There was the same number, this time saying, "He's dangerous. Stay away."

Elena's pulse raced as she felt another set of eyes locked on her. The free space of the diner suddenly seemed strange and claustrophobic. "I think I better go," she said in a bare whisper.

Jenna looked at her worriedly once more but nodded. "Okay, let me just wrap some of these up. I'll come with you, right?"

"No, I'll be fine," Elena said very convincingly if she was being honest with herself. She dropped a few bucks on the table and stood fast, squeezing Jenna before beating a quick retreat out of the diner.

She stepped out of the diner, and a blast of cold air greeted her. The comforting normalcy of the diner faded with it. Elena strode with a purpose, her mind filling now with more questions: who could have written these messages? What did they know about the man in the forest? And why did Elena feel as though she was being pulled into something she didn't understand?

She walked home, taking a different route from the one she had used that morning, cutting out the forest path. She couldn't shake the sensation she was being followed. Every noise, the indefinable movement out of the corner of her eye, seemed to raise the paranoia another notch.

Finally reaching her house, she took a deep breath and fumbled with her keys. The messages shook her more than she wanted to admit, and she just wanted to get inside and lock the door behind her. Stepping into the hall, she saw movement across the floor, and her body froze.

Her heart raced as she looked around to locate the source behind the shadow. She then spotted something on the floor-an envelope placed at the foot of her door. It was just an empty plain envelope-no marks, no clue given within. Her name was scribbled in tidy, foreign writing.

Elena didn't want to tear up the envelope, and she felt its very weight carry a certain sense of foreboding. She hesitated awhile but then tore it open. There was only one piece of paper in it, with only one typewritten sentence:

"**Stop digging or the next message will be your last.**"

Elena's throat caught on her breath. The message was clear and chilling; her stomach churned from fear. She glanced around her empty house, feeling that sense of safety she had always had replaced with dread.

She shut it fast behind her and locked it. She was shaking, and her fingers went for her brain to score out some sense of what she had just read. Who could have sent her this message, what did they want, and why did they so desperately want to keep her from the truth?

Her phone buzzed again; same strange number. "You've been warned."

Elena flopped back on the couch with a deep sigh, her mind reeling from the implications of it all. First, there was the man in the forest, then the strange warnings, and now this ominous note-engaging her in something far bigger, not to mention dangerous.

Her instincts screamed at her that she was homing in on something, but at what price? Messages weighing heavy in the air, anticipating what might come next, planted a sense of dread deep inside Elena.

Chapter 3 3

Elena spent the rest of her day in a trance-the threatening notes and weird messages playing over in her mind. Chores and homework couldn't pull her away from thoughts straying to the forest and the man she met in the clearing. Who was he? And who would want her off his tail?

That evening, Elena got a text from Jenna asking whether she wanted to go out with some of the gang. Ordinarily, Elena would turn her down, excusing herself and heading home for a night of quietude, but now she did need a distraction. She agreed readily and got dressed, hoping to find something that would draw her away.

Jenna picked her up, and they drove to their local hangout spot-a homey café open pretty late and that made the best hot chocolate in town. As they walked in the door, Elena spotted a group of their friends gathered around a table near the back. Among them were Marcus, who always seemed to know everything about everybody, and Lydia, who had a talent for being attuned to people's emotions.

"Hey, Elena, you look like you've seen a ghost," Marcus greeted her, still grinning, though his eyes did reveal a little concern.

Elena forced a smile as she joined them with Jenna. "Just had a weird day, that's all," she lied, trying to sound casual. She wasn't sure how much to share with them, especially the mysterious messages and warning notes.

Intuitive, Lydia leaned forward. "Weird how? You know you can tell us anything, right?"

Elena hesitated before nodding. "Yeah-I know. It's just. this morning I met someone weird in the woods. And then there were those creepy messages. It probably doesn't amount to anything, but it freaked me out."

Marcus's eyebrows rose. "Wait, what kind of messages? Like, stalker-creepy?"

"Sort of," Elena admitted, finally pulling out her phone. She showed them the texts and the note she had found at her door. She watched their faces the entire time they were reading. Jenna looked concerned, Lydia looked interested, and Marcus's usual playful expression became serious.

"This isn't nothing," said Marcus, rocking back in his chair. "Do you have any idea who might have sent these?"

Elena shrugged. "No idea. Though they did seem to know all about the guy I saw in the woods. Said he was dangerous and warned me to stay away."

Lydia tapped her chin pensively. "Did this guy say anything to you? Or do anything strange?"

"Not really. He just told me to be careful in those woods. But there was something.off about him," Elena explained, grasping at every detail. "He had this intense way of looking at me like he knew something about me that I didn't."

Marcus exchanged a glance with Jenna before refocusing on Elena. "Sounds like a mystery worth investigating. But if someone's sending you threats, we should be careful."

Jenna nodded. "Perhaps we can learn more about this man. What was he like, exactly?"

Elena did her best to describe him, the words tumbling out in a rush: tall, dark hair, an aura of command that clung to him like some invisible mantle. As she spoke, she saw something flicker in Lydia's face, a spark of recognition.

"That sounds like Lucas," Lydia said suddenly. "He's new in town, moved here a few months ago. My mom mentioned him once; said he was some kind of researcher or something. He's pretty private, though. Keeps to himself."

"Lucas, huh?" Marcus leaned forward, now interested. "What sort of a researcher?"

"I don't know," Lydia admitted. "But if he's connected to these weird messages, maybe there's more to him than we know."

Elena was torn: on the one hand, it felt somewhat of a relief to finally attach a name to that face; on the other, it created many more questions than answers. "I don't know if I should dig deeper. The messages said to stop or there would be repercussions."

Marcus shrugged. "Maybe, but threats like that could be a bluff to scare you off. If he's dangerous, that's all the more reason to find out what's going on."

For Elena, things weren't that obvious. On one hand, she was intrigued by Lucas and the motives a person would have in warning her about him; on the other, it creeped her out-serious tingles of warnings-and she didn't want to take any risk on herself or with her friends.

They went on and on about what they could do next until Elena's phone buzzed again. She couldn't help but hesitate before picking up another message from that unknown number; her shivers slid down her spine. "You're getting too close," it said. "This is your final warning."

Feeling her heart race, she turned the message toward her companions. The atmosphere tightened around the table as she felt the tension, and her brain began to process how much was at stake. They all looked into one another's faces, and in that moment, a silent agreement formed: Whatever is going on here, it's bad, and they need to tread carefully.

It was now that the door of the café opened, and Elena looked up instinctively. Her breath caught in her throat as she saw Lucas standing there at the door, his eyes darting restlessly with the same old piercing fineness over the room. Fortunately, his eyes had met hers for only half a second, as he turned around and left in the next moment-just like that. It was a state of shock in its real sense that held these friends together.

Elena's thoughts whirred like an engine on Formula One. Had he glanced at her? Was he the one who had been sending her all those messages? That Lucas just happened to appear when they were talking about him was more than just a coincidence. Her heart thumped in her chest, and a cold sense of dread settled into her stomach. She had an idea things were going to get even more complicated.
