IRA POV

The alarm clock rang loudly, I ignored it for the third time but when it ring again I hit down the clock and sat on my bed

" O goodness, I broke it "

I said getting up from the bed while picking up the broken clock , how on earth was I going to fix up this clock

" Ira !"

I heard my aunt yell, I dropped the clock and made way for downstairs

" Aunt !"

I said immediately I got to her, she looked at me the same way she always did and rolled her eyes

" Your uncle is calling for you at his office"

She replied pushing me aside and making her way upstairs, I went into his office greeting him

" Yes Ira, this is your admission letter from uniben ,you'll be studying at benin "

My uncle said without much smiles, I took the letter thanking him while leaving the office.

My name is Ira Donald, I lost my parents when I was only eight years old and my uncle with his family took me in, my aunty Rachel was never happy with the fact that I would be living with them, they had no children and she didn't want to take me in like her own child.

I got into my room seating down on the bed, uniben is quite a far place but I guess it's the only means to send me away.

Soon after I got a benin, I fitted into the students life, even if things were not that all perfect I always tried to smile always

" Hey you"

Sonia my best friend said taking a seat close to me, we are course mates studying medicine, in this country one can only became four things either a doctor, lawyer,banker or engineer. None of them where my options, I wanted to study journalism and media, that day my uncle broke my head for me claiming I want to be poor for the rest of my life

" I guess I'm talking to a ghost"

Sonia snapped hissing as I laughed

" Don't mind me jor, how far?"

I asked with a silly smile on my face

" Fyn o, have you done that assignment, the one from that textbook?"

She asked as I nodded my head looking for a long note I wrote it in

" Hey Sonia!"

David her boyfriend yelled coming towards us, I dropped my bag just looking at him moving with such force

" Come here!"

He yelled immediately dragging her by the hands and picking up her bag

" David, have you no shame leave her alone, this is a public place for goodness sake!"

I yelled pulling my friend back, she already had tears in her eyes as he clapped his hands

" Stay away from our private matter!"

David yelled dragging her out of the place, I angrily took my seat turning to look at all the eyes that were on me.

Sonia POV

" You bitch"

David my boyfriend yelled beating the living hell out of me, I rolled on the floor weeping my eyes to death

" So you think that you can go around discussing me to all your useless friends right?"

He asked with his deep voice pulling off his belts from his waist as he gave me another round of lashing. I stared at the mirror with tears putting make up on my injured face, I had classes by eleven and I wasn't sure if I could even make it . My life is a horror story, I never knew my parents, grew up on the streets and endured pain. I met David when I was still young, he was a guy from a good home and he took me in, the first few years I stayed with him were like magic but all that glitters they say is not gold, his character changed drastically, he would drink till he got absolutely drunk, beat me up at my slightest mistakes, sometime for nothing. I dressed my face and going out to meet my friend Ira, when i saw David coming my heart was already pounding and i left the earth should swallow me

" Sonia, why on earth do you want me to keep on beating you like I love it, how many times would I tell you to stop telling people about our relationship?"

He asked landing me a slap as I held my cheek

" No David no, I never told Irane anything, we were talking about our assignment"

I said calmly explaining everything for him

" Tell her to stay out of our relationship, I wouldn't repeat myself. Go and make lunch"

David barked as I immediately ran into the kitchen.

The next morning after class I was rushing home to avoid Ira as she blocked me on my way out of the gate

" Are you avoiding me?"

She asked with a very serious face, I pulled her into a corner if David caught me with her I'll receive another round of beating

" Ira, please this is not the right time for us to talk , I'll talk to you at due time please"

I pleaded about moving away

" Sonia, you can't seat down and cross your legs even fold your hands and watch your boyfriend bit you to death, let's call the police and arrest him for domestic violence. Wait his just your boyfriend just leave him alone"

She said as I started laughing

" I should leave him alone, call the police. Madam once You're in a relationship you'll know how important having a boyfriend is"

I hissing going away.

Ira POV

Sonia's behavior has just been so weird imagine she didn't even sit close to me during lectures. I shook my head watching her leave and still processing everything that she just motioned

" Once I have a boyfriend I'll know how important one is, okey Sonia me ?"

I asked no one In particular while going to my house. I shut my book itching my head, what exactly could be the problem with Sonia and what if she isn't okay

" Irane mind your own problem"

I said to myself lying down to sleep. Even if I wanted to stay on my own lane I couldn't just help but to get worried, the last time I saw her was back at two weeks ago and it was getting really frustrating, she was my best friend and was very important to me.

After lectures I decided to pay her a visit, she stays with her boyfriend and I only hoped that he wasn't around, the more closer I got, I louder the noise from inside came

" Help, help...... "

I heard her scream with lots of things breaking, I hastened my steps rushing into the house but the door was locked

" David!, David don't you dare!"

I yelled running around trying to open the door, I got towards the window and broke it with a stone as I climbed through the window while a nail pierced my palm

" Have mercy!"

Sonia screamed as I rushed up the stairs opening the door

" Leave her alone'

I yelled hitting him with table, I looked at Sonia who was bleeding on the floor, he nearly cut off her neck with the buckle of his belt, her left eye was already covered around, she couldn't even stand up

" You monster"

I screamed hitting him on the head with a table, the blood I saw from his head got me so scared as I managed to get her out of the house. I sat down with my bloody clothes holding my hands, Sonia was still unconscious, I remembered hitting David so hard and hoped he didn't die

" Are you related to her "

The doctor asked as I stood up

" She's my friend, she's going to be okay right?"

I asked

" She's got a blood clot in her brain and her left eye, we need to operate her if she wants to survive and retain her sight"

The doctor said as I fell to the seat holding my head with tears.

My feet still tapping the floor as I turned to the doctor with tears

" Doctor, my friends boyfriend was the one who hit her into a pulp, I hit him with such a heavy table. Please I need you to follow me to make sure his not dead, I won't be able to forgive myself"

I said holding his hands, he shook his head smiling

" Okay but he needs to be jailed for this, I'll call my friend his in the military, he'll follow us there"

He said as I stood up showing my appreciation. Soon accompanied with his friend we were at the house, Hunter his military friend got into the house checking if David was still alife

" His breathing"

Hunter said as he lifted him up and got him into the truck going to the hospital but promising me he would be arrested immediately he gets strong for domestic violence. The bus going back to bayelsa stopped as I came down, I boarded a Keke and went to my uncle's place, he was surprised to see me at home

" Irane what are you doing here?"

He asked as I gnashed my tooth looking for the perfect lie to give

" Uncle, my school fees,I need it"

I said looking down, he sighed asking me to follow him into his office, he sat down opening his drawer that was filed with bunch of money

" Take it and return to school tomorrow, I don't want you missing classes. You need a first class if you ever want to get a good employment in this country"

Uncle said whilst I shook my head, I looked at the drawer and went upstairs to my room. I sat down thinking of a way to save Sonia from her present state. After having dinner I went into my room thinking of the best way to take the money from the drawer . The night was dark enough and since it was only the three of us in the house I went into his drawer and took all the money inside and immediately ran away at the dead of the night.

Sonia POV

Things with David got so intense, he refused to let me out of the house to even attend lectures, the day I tried escaping from home to go away he caught me and I knew that was the end of my life.

" Today you're finished"

David yelled pushing me into the hot gas top, I screamed yelling for help whilst he began to strangle my neck with his belt buckle

" Da....v .Id p.....lea...se "

I pleaded with the blood flowing from my neck, my eyes red as I looked at Ira ran in hitting him hard with a table as I lost consciousness. I flicked my eyes open and close as I looked at Ira sitting next to me, she had on a purple dress

" Where's David, that bastard!"

I asked with annoyance

" His in jail, I got him arrested, you don't need to worry he will never hurt you ever again"

She said holding my hands with a weary look, I wondered why she was so sad

" How did you get money for my treatment?"

I asked still holding on to her hands, she looked at me speechless for some moments, she took her hands away getting up

" Don't worry about that"

Ira said not feeling comfortable, we stopped talking and listening to the loud noises from outside

" This is the ward of her friend"

Doctor Paul said as immediately some corps came along with a man who was perhaps in his late fifties, he was so angry that he gave Ira a very hot slap

" How could you, I raised you and took care of you, you're nobody without me, if not for me you're a nobody and you still had the guts to steal from me, you're an ungrateful fool!"

The man shouted as I tried getting up to save Irane from his harsh words

" Uncle I'm sorry, I needed to do it. I'm sorry, uncle"

I watched Irane plead on the floor with tears, the man looked away covering his face

" Take her away"

He shouted immediately leaving the room while the police took Ira along with them

" Irane!"

I screamed as I was injected me to sleep.

IRa POV

When I'd stolen the money from my uncle, I had immediately given the required amounts to the doctor for treatment. I sat down looking at Sonia, she was my best friend and my world, I could move mountains just to protect her from anyone who dares to hurt her. When she finally woke up I was deeply happy yet I wish she could stop asking about how and where I got the money from

" Don't worry about that"

I said not feeling comfortable, the noise from outside was large and my uncle was the last person I ever wanted to see as they dragged me to the nearest station

" This thief here stole my money, how could you, Ira, this is not your parents wish for you useless life!"

He yelled while I just kept quiet looking at him with tears, I just wanted him to pardon me and understand my short coming

" Did you take the money or not?"

A corp yelled hitting the table so hard that my heart skipped a thousand beats

" Yes, please forgive me uncle, I'm sorry, I just wanted to save my friend, please uncle, you know I'd never do anything to hurt you intentionally, please"

I begged on my knees holding his trousers, my uncle was not a harsh man, he was like a father to me even if he never showed it I knew he loved

" Lock her up"

He uttered walking out of the station

" Uncle please, uncle please, please, uncle!"

I screamed watching his back fade away

Hunter POV

I picked up my gown from the table while heading towards the door, I'm Hunter Rez a captain of the Nigerian Army, my work for years have been honest and nothing illegal. I just returned from the united states' where I've been staying for three months since my last arrest happened, I couldn't still believe men would beat even girlfriends, I personally threw that David into prison. My friend couldn't stop bothering me about meeting me as I headed to his working place.

" Hey Paul"

I said shaking my friend

" I need you to do me a favor!"

Paul said as I shook my head following him into the patient ward, I could still remember her face, the bruised up lady

" Sir, please help us, my friend shes in jail because of me, I can't do anything to help her out. It's been four months sir, please help her"

Sonia begged about going on her knees when Paul held her back

" Your friend?, That light skinned lady with long dark hair?"

I asked describing the beautiful lady that followed me to that house

" Why?, How?"

I asked as she explained everything to me, I took in a deep breathe, was such friendship still in existence, how could she make such sacrifices for someone who she's not even related to

" Hunter please, help her. I've only known her for a short while but that girl is a good girl, if I'd known they were coming to arrest her, I wouldn't have let them in"

Paul said with all sincerity

" I'll do my best" I said leaving the ward.

Ira POV

Four months past and yet nobody to come to my aid, they only gave me food once a day and give me hard labor every time. It was almost evening when a jeep pulled down, I heard the police salute as the steps came closer

" Ira "

I heard him say as I turned my head to look at him, of course it's been long but I couldn't forget the face of someone who saved my friend, I stood up without energy holding the bars

" I'm innocent"

I cried faintly as he wipes off my tears with his handkerchief

" Release her!"

He ordered as a police officer immediately ran to him

" But sir,she committed an offense, she stole"

He barked as Hunter gave him a deaf slap

" How did you know she stole?, Did the accuser press charges against her, do you know it's illegal to lock up someone without taking them to court for more than four months?, I can call the general right now and you'll would lose your jobs or, just for the sake of God you release her right this instance and I'll let this slide away. Do you want to play it the easy way or the hard way?"

Hunter asked as they immediately opened up the bars

" Thank you"

I muttered immediately losing consciousness

" Ira , Ira "

Hunter gently tapped whilst I sat up shivering, my body had suddenly developed a fever, he assisted me up and looked into my weary eyes

" Are you okay love"

He asked again while I shook my head, he placed his ever loving lips on mine and got up going into the bathroom, I watched him for a while before going downstairs to see how far the maid had gone with the morning preparations

" Good morning ma"

Kate the maid greeted, she was a young girl who was in her eighteens and schooling, she was an orphan that hunter rescued in one of his missions in the north and since then the girl had stayed with them. I sat down staring at the wedding pictures, after hunter rescued me from prison, I guessed we got close and sealed it with a wedding, and it's been two years without an fruit of the womb not even a miscarriage at least his parents are far off and don't disturb or cry for Gran children

" Are you okay?"

I heard him ask again, this time he was on his military wear, that color that brought a cold feeling to my heart, a color that could take my husband away from me forever

" I'm fine baby, I'm just stressed "

I said arranging his shirt as he smiled taking his cup of tea and slices of bread after he was done with his dinner, he immediately left while I watched the car drive off, hunter has been my shield, he took me home to my uncle paying every single dim I collected and even more before marrying me off, my aunt Rachel's face was full of anger all through out that day and I gave no concern to her feelings. I immediately got into the shower while leaving for work at the hospital.

Sonia POV

Things got a little bit more easy for me when I heard Ira was released from jail and that was the day I promised myself to sacrifice my self for her no matter trouble she may ever be in the nearest years . The marriage ceremony between hunter and Ira was a life time and it was absolutely wonderful, I myself wished I could have such a wonderful relationship and I guessed things played out well for me. During my final year in school I met this amazing business student who was doing his final clearance, we got along and soon got married, although the wedding was not as large as ira's but i was glad I was getting married to a man that wasn't David. Garry my husband owned a business where he sells electronic parts and he had boys who worked for him, they even stayed at the house for work, whilst as for me, I am a complete house wife but Ira has been begging for me to take up a job at her working place but Garry wouldn't want me stressing myself with work

" This nurse work is very stressful, are you lacking anything, is there something you've asked of me, that I didn't give you?"

Garry asked when I raised up the issue, I up holding his hands

" But I need to work, I Know you provide everything for me but for now, let me work"

I pleaded seeing that wherever I was saying wasn't getting to him

" You need to take care of Oprah, she's just a year old and needs her mother, you're not working"

Garry said with the final authority as he walked out, I sat down with my heart racing, after everything I had gone through with David, I became scared of expressing my emotions that are contradictory to what a man wants because I know that even an angel can turn to a beat if upset and that road was on I never want to trend upon.

" Oke, go and buy fuel before the gen turns off, if someone doesn't tell you, you won't know what to do with your common Sense, I don't know if God even gave you brain"

I screamed at one of the boys oke, he was very new and hadn't known how the house worked, according to Garry he would stay for five years before he would be settled , oke quickly ran past me with the fuel can as I shook my head in pity, he soon came back asking for money for fuel

" You for nor ask, you could have used those your dirty teeth's to buy the fuel, animal!"

I screamed hitting his head while he took the money from the table and left

" You should treat them more better"

Ira said as I turned to see her, her hands in her white pocket with the colored pens in her pocket, such a beautiful uniform that I wouldn't get to put on

" You don't know how stupid these boys are, you think they have sense like Kate "

I snapped giving room for her to seat down

" But still they're all humans, anyways how's your husband doing?"

She asked smiling

" Fyn o"

I said as prince another worker brought juice for her

" Thank you!"

She said sipping the wine when her phone began ringing , it was Hunter who was calling, she picked up the call saying she was at my place and would soon be home

" You and that husband of yours"

I said smiling

" Don't mention it, I bought biscuit for Oprah but I guess she's asleep"

Ira as I shook my head

" Early night sleeper, I'll give it to her tomorrow"

I said putting the biscuits on the table while she stood up and left the house.

Hunter Pov

I toot the car horn over and over again before the gates were fling open, I slowly drove in which Kate came out

" Welcome sir"

She said bringing forth her hands to carry the bags, I got down staring at her

" Where's your aunt?"

I asked immediately after she took my bag

" She's not yet back from work"

Kate said turning to go inside, I watched her open the door to go inside, her dressing was a bit off, she wore such a short gown and was even braless, I picked up my phone calling Irane as I went into the house. After taking off my uniform, I rested on the bed as a knock came, I wondered who it was, Irane wouldn't knock to come into her own bedroom

" Yes?"

I asked listening to the speaker

" It's me sir"

Kate's voice sprang from the outside

" Come in"

I said while she opened the door, this time she wasn't on the same gown, she had a towel around here chest

" Kate, what's the meaning of this?"

I asked sitting up and not trying to sound upset

" My cream is finished, I was wondering if I could ask for money to get a new one"

She said with such an innocent tone, I watched her twist her legs on the floor showing some fair skin

" Take mine, I'll give you cash tomorrow"

I said while she moved to get the cream inside my closet and left immediately. I shut my eyes trying not to think outside the box, she merely came for cream , I repeated in my head, soon there was another knock on the door

" What!"

I yelled standing up as Irane opened the door, her bag had tapped the door when she was taking off her shoes

" Any problem?"

She shutting the door while I shook my head and gave her a hug

" Welcome" I uttered as she sat down taking off her clothes. I played with her hair while we were on bed

" I have to tell you something"

I said while she sat up using the duvet to cover up her chest

" I'll be going to Ghana, we have this mission and it's going to be long, maybe a year"

" A year?"

She yelled now searching for her night dress which she immediately put on

" A whole year?"

She asked again, this time with a very subtle voice

" I know it's long, but I have to serve my country"

I replied

" Ghana is not even your country but what can I do, have fun"

She said turning to face the other side of the bed

" my love"

I said resting on her shoulder, she didn't push me off, so I knew she wasn't angry as I gave her a kiss and pulled her closer to myself

" The days would run so fast and by the time you wake up, I'm right by your side"

I muttered into her ears while shutting my eyes.
