In front of a somber building located in A City...
Esther Li had a blank look on her face as she held a woven bag in her hand.
"Esther, is anyone coming to pick you up? Any friends or families?" the policewoman kindly asked. She was the one who walked her out.
Esther Li shook her head and flashed a meek smile. "My boyfriend's working today. I'm afraid he won't be able to pick me up," she said.
Her boyfriend, Murphy Ye, was a typical workaholic. He could have easily forgotten that she went home today. Also, Esther Li's only best friend was grounded by her parents. There was no one else to pick her up.
"Just don't forget about the grievances you've suffered. Just be strong!" the policewoman reminded. She sighed, saying a few more words for Esther Li, before turning around and entering through the building's door.
Confused and lonely, Esther Li slowly paced along the road like a stray bird without anywhere to go.
'Screech!'
A yellow Ferrari sports car suddenly rushed from a distance and stopped right in front of Esther Li. Its break's screeches were so loud that it could possibly damage people's eardrums.
Startled, Esther Li gave her chest light pats to ease her raised heartbeat.
"Ah, Sister! There you are!" When the car door opened, a sleek female greeted Esther. As she stepped out, the woman pretended to be surprised. Her long legs graced towards Esther, and a fake smile threaded its way into her lips.
"Erica?" Esther called. She looked amazed. But Esther eventually calmed down as she vigilantly looked at Erica Li.
Erica Li was Esther's stepsister. She was adopted by Esther's father. Some time later, when Esther was imprisoned because she accidentally injured others while protecting Erica Li, Esther found out that she was really her father's biological child with another woman.
From the beginning up until the end, Esther was only being played by Erica Li. She even framed Esther and charged her with false accusations. The vicious woman totally messed up Esther's life!
After a long time, however, Erica Li slowly matured. She wore a tightly-fitted, sleeveless, silver dress. Her long hair was permed, and her face wore some exquisite makeup, in which her eyes looked really charming.
Usually, when archenemies meet, they almost certainly would want to kill each other. But at this moment, when Esther saw Erica, she didn't feel any emotions towards her.
"I'm so happy to finally see you again, sister," Erica said. She seemed excited, and wiped her cheeks as if tears were rolling down on it.
"Do you expect me to believe you?" Esther sneered. Three years had already passed. Esther was no longer the naive girl that Erica had made her to be. It was because of Erica and her mother that Esther had suffered from severe humiliation.
Erica set her up like that because she wanted to take her place in the Li family and take everything from her.
Now, she had already achieved her goal.
"Sister, why are you still blaming me? Dad was the one who insisted on breaking his relationship with you. He said that he wouldn't recognize you as his daughter now that you've ruined our family's reputation..." Erica looked at Esther with pitiful eyes. But Erica could see her excitement through them.
Esther's chest began to ache. She thought that she was prepared to deal with this--that she wouldn't feel depressed anymore.
But how could she? She had been driven out of her own family even. She hadn't been connected with them ever since the incident happened.
"Mom did everything to change Dad's mind. I begged! But no matter how hard we tried, he wouldn't change his mind. He even hired a lawyer..."
Looking at Erica's exaggerated sad look, Esther suddenly despised herself. Why did she buy Erica's poor acting by then?
"I haven't seen you for three years! What made you come for me now?" Esther asked, indifferent. In her mind, she knew that Erica wasn't here to welcome her.
"We're sisters, after all. Also, I'm marrying Murphy. I wanted to invite you personally," Erica said with a smug look on her face. She took out a red invitation card from her expensive crocodile bag and handed it to Esther.
Esther was overwhelmed with what Erica had just said. She felt like her head was going to explode. As she took two steps back, she almost fell down on the ground.
"You're lying. Murphy is my boyfriend..." Esther said with a weak voice.
It couldn't be possible. How could Murphy Ye give in to Erica and marry her?! Esther tried so hard to calm herself down. She couldn't understand why Erica was torturing her with such an impossible thing. 'Is she just trying to make me miserable?' she thought to herself.
"Esther!" a man's voice called. "What she said is true..." the man continued.
Esther instinctively turned around to see where the voice was coming from. It was from a man coming out of a sports car. She didn't hear another word from him, as her mind went blank.
Murphy was dressed in a white suit with a striped tie. He looked outstanding in that suit, along with his handsome face, sleek eyebrows, gentle eyes, and tall stature. His eyes looked full of surprise, pain, and other mixed emotions when he saw Esther.
"Esther, I'm really sorry that I couldn't marry you. I'm marrying Erica. And the wedding will be held soon," Murphy said with a somber tone. Deep down, Murphy felt really sorry for Esther, but he couldn't do anything to change what was happening. He held Erica's waist as he told Esther, "You understand me really well, Esther. You know that my love for you was true, but Erica is now my true love. I'm in love with her. And I would like to ask for your blessing."
Trying to fight her tears back, Esther bit her lip tightly. She couldn't let Murphy and Erica see her in such a mess. Even though she lost everything, she must maintain her dignity.
However, the pain in her heart couldn't stop but spread to every part of her body.
She once believed that Murphy was her one true love, but now, it all seemed gone in an instant.
Erica handed over a thick envelope as saying, "You just came out of prison, and you don't have money. Promise us you'll attend our meeting. I'll even lend you money, so you won't have to come to our wedding empty-handed. Think of it as a compensation. After all, I failed to persuade Dad and he even kicked you out of the family..." Even though her words seemed sincere and pleasant, Esther couldn't help but feel sick. She didn't like the feeling of becoming Erica's charity case.
"You'll lend me money just to come to your wedding? As compensation?" Esther opened the envelope with a bitter smile on her face. She grabbed the banknotes and estimated its weight using her fingers. "Wow, more than twenty thousand. You're so kind, Erica!"
Over twenty thousand for all her grievances for the past three years?
Over twenty thousand to give up her place in the Li family?
Over twenty thousand to hand her fiance over to Erica?
Did everything she had only sum up to twenty thousand?
How ridiculous!
Seeing that Esther was staring at the money, Erica flashed a sinister smile and said, "If you still think that's not enough, I still have..." She paused and then leaned on Murphy's arm. She laughed and fiddled with the diamond necklace around her neck.
Esther calmed herself down and, with a smile on her face, she said, "Are you going to say that you have more money?" She stretched out her hand that was covered with small scars. "Didn't you say that you would make it up to me? Then give it to me. Let's see how much our sisterhood is really worth."
Murphy looked at Esther with pitiful eyes. But at this moment, Esther only viewed him as a hypocritical man, no matter what!
Erica snorted at Esther. 'What a greedy phony!' However, Esther stood her ground and acted indifferent. At the thought that the once proud Esther became such pathetic and miserable right now, Erica was so pleased. If it weren't for the noble image that Erica was maintaining, she would burst out laughing.
What a disgraceful day Esther had had!
With a smile on her face, Erica took out another stack of banknotes from her bag, about twenty or thirty thousand more. She raised her chin, feeling proud of herself, and gave the banknotes to Esther. She was looking forward to seeing Esther's face be filled with gratitude and happiness.
If Esther would become much more miserable, she would become more distant to Erica. That way, Erica would seem nobler than before. Esther didn't even deserve to be compared to her anymore.
Erica was in such a good mood. For her, there was nothing more enjoyable than watching Esther living a poor and pathetic life.
Esther held the money in her hands and played with it with her fingers. She stared at them with lazy eyes, without a trace of neither sorrow nor fear.
"By the way, your shaky past would make it hard for you to get a job. How about I ask Grandpa and Dad to let you work for our family company, sister? You won't have to worry about your living costs then," Erica said. Her generous offer only underlined Esther's current plight. That was exactly what she was trying to do, to humiliate Esther in any way.
"Oh? Really?" Esther replied. She wanted to hear what more Erica wanted to show off.
"Grandpa and Dad have been busy planning our wedding. Even though Grandpa's old, he still insisted on planning the wedding. Sweetie, isn't he? Dad has been busy looking for a photographer. I feel sorry for him -- losing weight for all the trouble he's doing for us," Erica said. She let out a sigh, feeling touched for what her Grandpa and Dad had been doing for her.
"Murphy, here, is also busy. He's supposed to be at work today, but the wedding dress was sent here today. It was made from France and he wanted to fetch it himself to check if the dress matches my figure. He wanted to make sure I'd look my best at our wedding," Erica added. She then stared at Murphy with a shy smile, and her eyes shone like a little girl talking her crush.
"It isn't good for your relationship that you always brag about it. It wouldn't last and you would get tired of each other really soon. Showy relationships don't last," Esther sneered. "I don't mind listening to all the nonsense you're saying. But if what I said comes true, I will feel really sorry," she added.
Murphy stared at Esther with a pained look on his face. Esther was no longer the kind and weak girl she used to be.
The shy smile got stuck on Erica's face. She glared at Esther as hatred filled her eyes. 'What a bitch! You just can't stand to see that Murphy is happy with me, right? It's not my fault that you can't keep him by your side. You're with him for four years, but so what? I'm the one he chooses in the end.'
At the thought how Esther was jealous of her, Erica's anger slowly started to disappear. She wore a proud smile on her face. So what if Esther was cursing her relationship with Murphy? She still had him on her side, and soon enough, he would be her husband.
"Ms. Erica, are you finished showing off?" How could Esther not see what Erica had in her mind?
"Ugh! I'm done!" Erica was an educated lady. No matter what Esther said to her, she would never admit that she was showing off on purpose. She bit her lip, looked back at Esther, and said, "Why are you calling me Ms. Erica? I'm your sister. Your very own sister."
"Well, my dear sister, it's because you are the kind of person who pretends to be innocent and chaste when you are really a bitch," Esther said as she stared at Erica. She had a smile on her face that looked both polite and callous. Her teeth were grinding because of her anger. Each of her word was like a knife, stabbed right through Erica's hypocrisy.
"Here, take your dirty money back! Take it as my advance congratulatory gift for your divorce!" Esther shouted.
She quickly threw the two stacks of banknotes on Erica's face. The money flew all over the place.
Erica felt a sharp pain on her nose as the banknotes hit it. Her beautiful face turned deadly pale.
"Esther, you've gone too far!" Murphy stepped in front of Erica, and gently rubbed her back to calm her down.
'I've gone too far?' Esther sneered in her heart. Esther laughed as she felt that there was no need to say anything more. The man beside Erica had betrayed her, falling in love with another woman--her own sister, even. And now that Murphy witnessed the conflict between her and Erica, he chose to comfort Erica instead. She was completely disappointed in him.
As Esther glared at Murphy, she sarcastically said, "Excuse me, sir. I'm leaving."
"Esther! What did you meant by saying that? Are you going to treat me like that? You're looking down on me, aren't you?" Coming back to her senses, Erica let out an earth-shaking scream. Her nose tilted a little as she had just received a micro plastic surgery last month.
