Chapter 1 Chapter The Volunteer

"Blood pressure, normal."

"Heart rate, normal."

"All vitals are within experiment parameters. We can begin now."

On the cold platform, Su Qingge, wearing a dark green medical gown, lay calmly inside the experimental apparatus.

Even without makeup, she was pretty and delicate. In the nervous crowd, only her eyes were calm.

"Qingge, have you really thought this through?" the dean asked. He was a bit over fifty. It was odd to see him looking so concerned. He was usually so serious and expressionless.

Afterall, the one lying there about to be the test subject was one of his greatest students.

"Sir, I am fully aware of what I have decided to do," Su Qingge told her teacher. "You and I are the only ones who understand the procedure well enough to participate. Your wife and Langlang cannot afford to lose you. I am the only viable test subject."

She glanced around at her fellow students, but most of them wouldn't look her in the eyes.

None of them were foolish enough to volunteer for a completely untested experimental operation.

"Three minutes until the machine is ready. All staff, please exit the experiment area."

The dispassionate voice played through the lab speakers, repeating its message as the students started to file out. The dean took one last look at Su Qingge before turning his back to her and leaving.

Su Qingge looked around the empty lab, finally exhaling. She grabbed her clothes tightly, hands stiff. No one had noticed the cold sweat that soaked her back.

No afraid? Who wouldn't be afraid?

No one knew if she would make it off this platform alive. Even if she did, they had no idea what the side effects would be.

This was a completely unexplored field of science, but if she succeeded, she would do something nobody had done before.

She focused on that, on the dreams of what she was about to accomplish.

Turning her head, she could watch the data flow down the LCD panel next to her.

Three years ago, she had thrown herself into this research with all her heart.

The idea was the human brain could be taught to respond to previously undetectable stimuli. In this case, poison. Upon recognizing it, her rewired brain, using traditional Chinese medicine and modern medical science, would instinctually know the appropriate antidote and dose.

In other words, if this succeeded, anyone would have the ability to treat poison with the skill of a pharmacist. It would be a great step for medical science, but without concrete, experimental evidence, it was only a vision.

"Sir, everything is prepared. We can begin on your say so."

Inside the spacious observation room, all eyes were on the grizzled dean. He steeled himself for a moment, nodded his head, and grimly activated the preliminary sequence.

Lying inside the machine, Su Qingge watched the green and red indicator lights start to blink.

"System activation at ten percent. Thirty percent. Fifty percent. Ninety percent. Activation complete," said the same emotionless female voice.

The machine began to vibrate, making Su Qingge's head spin. It's caused by the vibration of the shock chamber. In a moment, when its frequency was synchronized with her own brain wave, it would try to rewrite her sensory perception.

Fifteen seconds.

She felt sick, unable to hide her discomfort anymore.

Chapter 2 Chapter Travel to a Bridal Sedan Chair

The actual transfer was only one and a half minutes, but it felt so much longer.

"Twenty seconds."

Her head felt like it would explode. Through the glass wall, she could see the researchers watching her in white coats.

She forced herself to endure the pain, but she was beginning to slip in and out of consciousness.

"Thirty seconds."

The rest of her body exploded with pain. She wondered if her internal organs had begun to burst under the pressure.

At thirty eight seconds, she could no longer bear it.

Before she lost consciousness completely, Su Qingge saw her teacher's face, not far away, filled with concern.

The vibration had been too much for a fragile human body. Even a few seconds was enough to destroy her.

She managed one last thought before the darkness took her.

'I cannot accept this.'

Her senses were muddled, but she could feel a deep ache that went right down to her bones.

Wasn't she dead? She had felt her organs burst. Even the most advanced technology couldn't save her from that.

'A little bit of Endless Grass will kill an individual by attacking their nervous system.'

'Heartbroken Flower has intense paralytic effects that can cause permanent injury to adults.'

'Seven-Day Bollworm and Wushan Insect have highly corrosive venom.'

'...'

A ceaseless stream of information ran through Su Qingge's brain. Her head felt bloated with it.

Working with her teacher, she'd focused on western medicine. This felt more like traditional Chinese medicine, but the names were so strange. She'd never heard of any of them.

The corner of her mouth felt odd and she tried to wipe at it. What came away was black and red. It looked like some sort of polluted blood, but the smell wasn't quite right.

The world around her was red, and, more puzzlingly, shaking.

Where was she? What the hell had happened?

Su Qingge slowly sifted through the new information in her head. She estimated that she had data on 118 different poisons.

She could not help but be astonished. So many ways to take a life. How much hatred was there? How many grudges.

Digesting to flood of information, Su Qingge finally let herself revel in her success. The implant was working. They had done it. The next Nobel Prize in medicine would go to her and the dean. But-

Why could she hear bronze drums?

Su Qingge, usually so calm and analytical, could not explain the red cloth that surrounded her. It was so bright and dazzling. And the strange, irregular shaking.

She was considered a distant beauty by her classmates, but as she began to put the clues together, she froze.

Was this a bridal sedan chair?

She looked down at her clothes. The bright red dress had a pair of mandarin ducks embroidered in gold silk. It looked like a wedding dress from an ancient dynasty.

What the hell was happening?

Sn Qingge took a deep breath and a thought came to her. Could this be another world? Was that possible?

And if she'd really come to another world, who's sedan chair was she sitting in?

Chapter 3 Chapter Living for You

Thinking of the missing bride, Su Qingge began to recall somebody else's memories. They played through her mind like a movie.

This was not another country. It was not even another time. It was somewhere else in space and time – Jin State.

This was not the body of Su Qingge, but of Lin Mengya, daughter of Marquis Zhennan.

Lin Mengya had been born to rank and doted upon, but she suffered from brain damage. Unexpectedly, she'd still been arranged to marry Prince Yu, the third crown prince of this land.

Today she was meant to marry into the family of Prince Yu.

Her silky red veil was embroidered with a singing golden phoenix, each stitch done by hand. It was nothing like the rough fabric made by modern machines.

Su Qingge could not decide if she was lucky.

She had died in that experiment, but she had been allowed to live again.

She closed her eyes, rubbing her brows as another memory came to the surface.

Before getting into the chair, Lin Mengwu, her younger half-sister, had given her a handful a fresh dates. She'd said they represented a wish that her sister would soon be blessed with a child.

She'd told that matchmaker that the dates would keep her sister from acting up on the road. The dates would relieve the tedium of the journey. Su Qingge couldn't help but smile bitterly.

It could have been a thoughtful gesture. Lin Mengya had suffered a high fever when she was young, and she thought much like a seven or eight year old. The long ride would be quite boring for her.

Of course she ate the dates eventually, but not as fast as hoped.

It was assumed she would polish off the dates long before she reached her destination. Lin Mengya treasured food. She wiped each date carefully, placing them in a box and holding it close.

Su Qingge looked at her hands. Her lab work had left harsh calluses, but these hands were soft and delicate. They were smaller than hers too.

Li Mengya was only sixteen.

Su Qingge felt uncomfortably blessed. Many people wished to be young again, but it was impossible. But here she was, young again, in the body of a girl who would now not get the chance to grow old.

God had given her an opportunity. She would not waste it. She would replace Lin Mengya and live a good life in this strange word.

She looked at the box in her hands, tracing the peony patterns carved in the wood. It held Lin Mengya's dreams of a happy marriage. She didn't understand the proper behavior for a wife, but she had been so excited to be married. Her head had been filled with naïve dreams about her future husband.

Even after she'd eaten every date, Lin Mengya had been filled with joy. Su Qingge could still feel her excitement. The girl had never realized the dates were poisoned.

She had taken this girl's body. The least she could do was avenge her death.

Su Qingge... no. She was no longer Su Qingge.

Lin Mengya wiped the blood away from her mouth and placed the veil back over her face.
