"I'll find myself out, Mom. Have a good sleep."
Nora Ke closed the door slowly and leaned against the wall. Now that she was sure that no one was watching her, the woman breathed a sigh of relief.
Her mother had been sick for three months and she had shown no signs of recovery. Not only that, but the medical expenses were also through the roof. Because of this, Nora Ke had to work four jobs consecutively just to make ends meet.
Walking to the elevator, Nora Ke was about to head to work when she suddenly heard a high-pitched scream coming from behind her. A soft hand grabbed a hold of her shoulder.
"Charles!" Her wide eyes stared Nora Ke down as she waved her other hand in panic. "Have you seen him? Can you tell me where he is? Please?" The strands of her disheveled hair fell down her face like a bunch of wires as she shook Nora Ke desperately.
'Charles?'
Nora Ke frowned. She didn't know a man named that.
However, before she could even react, the crazy woman had already let go of her and stumbled to the next passer-by she saw. She continued to spout the man's name.
After receiving the same bland reaction, the crazy woman rushed to the nearest window and waved her hands up in the air. "Charles, you'd better come out of here!" she shrieked. "If you won't see me, then I'll jump out right now!"
Nora Ke was startled from the woman's sudden words. She was about to dial the police when a low voice broke through the crowd.
"You called me to come here, just to show me this?"
The spectators all looked at the same direction at the same time. A man in a black suit had stepped out from the crowd. He was wearing a windbreaker that displayed his incredibly muscular figure. His dark hair swept across his forehead, showing a pair of deep black eyes that could render anyone speechless.
Although she was just standing next to him, Nora Ke felt a chill run down her bones.
"I already told you how much I don't like being threatened. If you want to jump, then go ahead. I'll just hire someone to get rid of your useless corpse." The man tugged around his sleeves indifferently. He didn't even wait for the woman to step down from the window before turning around, about to leave.
No matter how hard or loud the woman had sobbed and begged, no one dared stop him.
Nora Ke clenched her fists. "Sir, don't you think it's heartless to abandon her? There are so many people watching her right now. The least you can do is talk her out of jumping."
The man stopped on his tracks. He slowly turned towards her, eyes flashing with unreadable emotions.
Nora Ke had a beautiful and delicate face. Her bright eyes were clear, reflecting the artificial lights that glistened from the ceiling. Her long black hair fell to her shoulders, left in disarray as they were blown by the harsh winds.
Although she was attractive, the man couldn't help but sniff at the sight of her cheap clothes.
"And who are you?" he sneered. "I suggest you mind your own business."
Without another word, the man strode away without even bothering to look back. He had no time to deal with this.
However, Nora Ke kept up with him. Without thinking of the consequences, she pulled out her small phone and waved it at him. "Fine, go!" she threatened. "If you do, I'll just post this up online and expose you for the scum you are! Don't blame me if you get beaten up every time you walk out the streets."
The reason why she hated these despicable men so much was because of her best friend. Tammy Tian had been so heartbroken over a certain man that she even threatened to cut her wrists. In the same manner, her ex snorted and left without saying his farewells.
During that time, Nora Ke stayed with Tammy Tian from day till night, helping her heal from his treacherous lies and deceit. In those days, she could tell how painful it was, and she would never wish that feeling on anyone.
If she didn't stand up now, then that crazy woman would jump out and kill herself.
However, her actions had only infuriated the man to no end.
"I've already said that I don't like being threatened," he snapped.
The next thing she knew, the man had grasped her arm and pulled her into the VIP lounge beside the corridor.
He was definitely not merciful to women at all. Nora Ke stumbled into the room from the sudden force. Her vision blurred just for a second, and when she turned around, the man was already approaching her like a predator stalking his prey.
She shrunk under his aggressive gaze as her eyes shifted from left to right.
"What do you want?" she stuttered out, knowing that there was no room for her to escape. "Are you going to beat me? My camera's still on. As long as I'm alive, I'll release the video!" Although she had seen many arrogant guys, it was the first time she met someone so ruthless!
Nora Ke retreated to the corner, trying her best to calm herself. There was no way she was going to show the man how much he terrified her, but it seemed that her trembling body thought otherwise.
Just as the man was about to reach for her, a scream ripped out her throat. Catching the man off guard, she grabbed one of the pillows beside her and threw it at him.
Perhaps it was because of her nervousness, that the white pillow failed to hit the man. Instead, it drew a perfect arc and hit the old man that had just entered the door.
Nora Ke had been in the hospital for three months, so she knew who the old man was. "Director!" she yelled in relief, rushing over to him as if he was her knight in shining armor. "This man..."
The old man threw away the pillow and snarled at the young woman, "Nora! Are you out of your mind? Don't you know how much you owe me with your mother's medical fees? If you take one more second of this nonsense, I'll call the police and accuse you for assault!"
"I..." Nora Ke was about to say something, but she quickly stopped herself. From the way the director's eyes were wide with anger, she could tell that he wanted to do everything to please the ruthless man. Her fingernails dug into her palms. It seemed that she must've offended some big shot.
But even if he was rich and powerful, that still didn't give him the right to act so lawless.
Since she had already offended him, she might as well go with it. "I have evidence in my hands!" she snapped. "You can call the police, and then I'll simply hand this video and tell them how much of a bastard that man was."
The mysterious man could only stare at Nora in disbelief.
Before anyone could say anything, the crazy woman who was about to jump off the building had entered the room. The unscrupulous look she had went unnoticed as she rushed up to Nora. "Look, don't meddle in my business!" she snarled before turning to the man who had just rejected her.
"Mr. Charles, I'm so sorry. I didn't expect to have caused this much trouble for you. I only hope that you'd give my husband a chance to make up for his mistake. He has worked for you for so many years, and the only reason he stole the money was because of our family. Please don't fire him."
Charles Zuo glared at her. "He may have not taken such a large amount of money, but it still left a bad impact. What you've done not only caused a huge loss on our side, but has also affected the jobs of many others. If you continue to pester me, I'll have no qualms about sending him to prison."
Their conversation made Nora furrow her eyebrows.
Had she wronged a good person? Her cheeks flushed at the thought.
Noticing that they weren't watching her, she was about to run off to the nearest exit. However, her plan had failed when Charles Zuo turned to her with his gloomy gaze. Her whole body stiffened, and her blood ran cold.
"I'm sorry," Nora apologized, forcing a smile into her lips. "It seemed that it was all just a misunderstanding."
Charles Zuo approached her and stared her down, looking at her as if she was some trash that he had forgotten to pick up.
With a sneer, he bent forward and whispered, "Do you think you can make up for your mistake just by saying sorry? If everything could be handled this peacefully, why do you think we'd need police?" His words had a menacing undertone laced around them.
Was he going to call the police on her?
Nora gazed up at his handsome face.
Her heart raced in her chest.
"Mr. Charles, you see, I'm only doing this for the peace in our society. Although there have been misunderstandings, my intention was good!" she protested. "Don't you think the society needs more brave and fearless people like me? If you call the police now, you'd not only pull me down, but you'll also make me lose faith in this world."
Nora quickly skipped towards the side table and grabbed the pitcher, wanting to pour him a glass of water. She wanted to apologize, but before she could reach him, the glass slipped from her fingers and the water poured all over his chest.
She pulled out tissues from the box. "I'm sorry!" she wailed. "I didn't mean it! I seriously..."
Despite Charles's continued objection, Nora hurriedly unbuttoned his shirt, wanting to wipe the water off him.
As her fingers grazed against his chest, she could feel his tight muscles clenching underneath her. There was something about the beaded water droplets sliding down his defined skin that made it all the more tempting.
Not only did he have a handsome face, but he also had a good figure to match it with.
Nora flushed, withdrawing her hands awkwardly. She placed a tissue into his hand and ran away. "I'm sorry," she murmured. "Please don't mind what happened. I swear that this won't happen again!"
Charles could only look at her retreating figure as she ran away. His eyes twitched as he held the tissue in his hand.
It seemed that there were plenty of weirdos in this world.
Weekends were always the best time for night clubs, bars, and the like.
Not only were they filled with people ready to relax from a long day, but the place was also usually packed with irresistible beauties.
"Charles, why are you so down, man? We rarely have a chance to come here for fun. Try not to ruin it," Martin Yi reminded. He held a coquettish woman in his arm while holding a glass of vodka in the other. A wide grin was plastered on his face.
Meanwhile, he turned left and right, trying to peer through the glass window to see if there were any more beautiful women on the dance floor.
"I'm not interested." Charles didn't even bother to look up from his phone.
He spent most of his time looking through company documents, so he seldom went to such places. He wouldn't even be caught dead here if it wasn't to accompany his friend. Given that Martin was infamously known as the womanizer of SH City, he often brought him here to 'let loose'.
Martin shot him a disdainful look before walking to the door of the private room. Without another word, he pushed it open. "Don't you know that there are rumors circulating that you're gay?" he grumbled. "People already think we're a couple. How about I ask two girls over to cut the rumor tree off, eh? Tell me, what kind of girl do you like? I'll bring them to you."
Charles finally raised his head, glaring at him.
Just as he was about to say something to stop him, a sudden noise broke out from the club.
In the opposite room, he could hear several men shouting at a woman.
"Bitch, you should be thanking me for giving you a chance to accompany me. Don't be so ungrateful!"
"You have the nerve to offend Mr. Adam? Do you even want to stay in this city anymore?"
"I'm not here to sell my body. If you take one step forward, I'll kill myself!"
Curses and screams echoed from the room. Suddenly, different wine bottles were smashed against the walls.
The woman from the other room was dressed in black and white. It was obvious that she was a waiter here.
When Charles narrowed his eyes at the hooligans, he found that he didn't know them, nor was he even interested in them. He shrugged, turning his attention back to his phone.
"Close the door. It's loud out." He frowned.
Martin was about to close the door obediently when a black figure rushed through the opening.
Before anyone could react, the woman clutched onto Charles hysterically, blinking the unshed tears from her eyes.
"Honey!" she sobbed out. "Why are you so late? Those bastards were about to molest me."
The side of his eyes twitched. He couldn't help but look at the woman who was clutching his thigh as if her life depended on it. Her dark hair was in disarray and her clothes were torn from the incident. She looked like a beggar on the streets.
Resisting the urge to kick her to the curb, he slowly reached out to raise her head. At the sight of her face, he froze.
This woman... She was the one he had met in the hospital!
Nora didn't seem to care as she continued to hug his leg tightly. She sobbed exasperatedly, putting on a show for these hooligans. "I've already told you that I have a boyfriend," she murmured. "I won't go with you."
At the same time, she winked at Charles, hoping that he would get the hint, seeing as they had met each other earlier.
Plus, he was rich and powerful. These bastards wouldn't dare offend him. If he chose to save her, then she'd be safe!
Charles sneered at the sight. She had just offended him back then. Did she really think he would save her this time?
Before he could pull her away, one of them spoke first, "You're her boyfriend? You think you can stand up for her?" The bastards had the nerve to laugh. "Judging from the looks of your clothes, it seems that you're not ordinary. Which gang are you from? Don't you know who Mr. Adam is? You think you can get in his way?"
Every word they said was like a spark of fire igniting his anger. Charles couldn't stand their arrogance anymore. He cocked up an eyebrow. "Mr. Adam? Who's that?"
There was something about his words that made Martin break out in cold sweat. These young men were truly stupid if they thought they could get away with what they'd just said. Maybe it was because of their ignorance that they didn't know who Charles was.
Seeing that their leader had been humiliated, the gangsters' faces flushed dark red. They quickly took off their coats, revealing their hardened tattoos, as if they were already going to declare war.
Noticing that this would get messy, Nora quickly retreated behind Charles, wondering if the man could defeat them or if she should call the police.
The gang leader smashed the bottle of wine against the corner of the table and rushed towards him.
Nora had thought that they were done for, but it turned out that Charles could deal with four opponents within a minute. In a blink of an eye, the hooligans were knocked out. With a roar, they fell one by one, covering their heavily injured arms.
Charles's attacks were all fast and accurate. He was like a vampire speeding across the men as he broke their bones and threw them to the side.
Staring at the number of bodies scattered across the floor, Martin sighed discontentedly. "Charles has served in the army, you dunderheads," he muttered, shaking his head. "You guys are truly asking for death."
After ordering his men to throw those hooligans out, Martin glanced at the woman hiding behind Charles with a small frown.
He had no idea who this woman was, yet she had the nerve to rush here so soon. It was obvious that her target was Charles.
He pursed his lips. Maybe those gangsters were actually hired by her to carry out her trick. And her target was Charles.
Over the years, Martin had seen plenty of women who had tried their best to attract the young bachelor, but he had never seen him fighting for anyone of them. Was he attracted to the woman?
Although he was happy that his friend finally found a girl he liked, it still wasn't good if that woman was a scheming little wench.
Contemplating for a long time, he smiled and poured her a glass of water. "Miss, are you okay?" he asked. "Don't worry. These men won't offend you again. Why don't you drink some water to calm down?"
Nora looked at him cautiously. Ever since her parents had gone bankrupt, she had to work in various sketchy places, so she knew how sinister these people could be. She knew for a fact that she couldn't trust people that easily, especially in this side of town.
But...
Since Charles had just saved her and this man was his friend, she assumed that they might be good people. Plus, she also happened to be a little thirsty. She grabbed the glass from him. "Thank you."
However, there was something about the water that seemed a little strange. Perhaps it was just the wine, so she shrugged and took a sip.
Martin's smile widened. "Look at your clothes. It's not becoming of you to be like this." He turned to his friend. "Charles, why don't you take her to the lounge for her to change? Otherwise, they'd think that we've done something to her."
Charles still looked indifferent from the whole thing. He had only fought those bastards because they irritated him, not because he liked the woman.
Nora glanced at her shabby clothes. She was wearing a tight corset that was assigned to her to attract the guests in this club, which might be why people would've misunderstood her intentions.
Flushing at the sight of her torn clothing, she straightened her skirt. "Could I..." she whispered softly, unsure of what to do.
Charles only gazed at her coldly. Noticing that he was getting impatient, Nora shivered in fear. If looks could kill, she would've already been six feet under.
However, after a few seconds, Charles shrugged in disbelief. It would definitely be inappropriate if she walked out like this, rendering him no choice but to take her to the lounge.
Staring at their retreating figures, Martin could only look at them in wonder.
Taking Nora into the lounge, he quickly ordered his assistant to buy some new clothes for her. In a few minutes, his subordinate returned with a bag of clothes.
"Mr. Charles, I didn't know her size, so I brought one for each." The assistant bowed his head.
"Okay," Charles said. The man had followed him for a long time, and he knew well what his boss wanted.
He gazed at the clothes in the bag. Apart from the dresses and coats in the bag, there were also different sizes of lingerie.
Seeing how well the woman was treated, his subordinates were shocked at the sight, but they didn't there let it show. Without another word, Charles took her into the room.
"Take a shower," he said in disgust.
The sound of running water echoed across the dim room as he placed the bag of clothes near the bathroom.
He was about to leave when the phone in his pockets rang out.
"What's wrong?" he answered.
"Charles," Martin warned. "I heard that there were many girls in the night clubs that hook up with rich men just to get a piece for themselves. You have to be careful of that girl, got that?"
Leaning against the wall, he rolled his eyes. "Do you think I'm the type of person who'd fall for that trickery? I suggest you worry more for yourself."
After hanging up the phone he was about to leave, when a sound came from the bathroom.
Suddenly, the bathroom's door opened and a hot mist filled the room. Through the white clouds, Charles could see a faint outline of the woman's slim figure, but the room was so dark that he could barely see her.
"You've already finished?" he asked. "Come with–" Before he could finish his words, Nora immediately rushed up to him and wrapped her arms around his hips. She clung to him desperately, making him freeze.
It was only then did he realize that she was naked.
Nora rubbed against his chest. Her wet arms rested on his chest as she fumbled around his buttons.
"What are you doing? Stop!" He grabbed her arms, glaring at her.
He struggled with the urge to kick her out of the window.
However, she still didn't listen to him. Instead, she frowned and struggled beneath him, groaning as she grind against him. "Please," she whispered.
Charles's frown deepened as Martin's words flashed in his mind.
He hated gold diggers the most.
But there was something about her that made his body react differently than what he had wanted.
Did she want to hook up with him? Since she was being so provocative, then he was going to teach her a painful price!
After they had done the deed, Charles went to the bathroom to take a shower. When he came out, he found that the woman had already huddled up into the sheets, looking as if she had blacked out.
She was asking for it!
He was about to change into his clothes and leave when he spotted a red splotch staining the creamy white sheets.
Charles wasn't that innocent, so he knew exactly what it was. What he didn't expect was for this to be her first time. Didn't she hook up with rich men in these night clubs?
Maybe she had it restored through surgery.
With the question floating in his mind, he moved closer and held her shoulder, trying to get her to wake up. "You dead?" he said gruffly.
However, the moment his fingertips grazed her skin, he immediately withdrew his hold as if he had just been scalded. She must've been at least a forty degrees!
The more he thought about what had happened, the more uneasy he became. After minutes of hesitation, he finally helped her into her clothes and took her to the hospital.
The next morning, Nora woke up with sharp pains coursing down her abdomen.
She was sore all over her body, and she felt as if one movement could break her bones for good. Her vision was blurry, and she winced when she tried to turn around the sheets. Every moment she made felt like an invisible force, which was completely tearing her apart.
Nora struggled to open her eyes only to be blinded by the bright light. Soon enough, once her vision adjusted, she could make out a nurse peering at her.
"Miss! You're awake." The nurse heaved a sigh of relief, checking her charts. "You're all right now, but you have to be very careful in the future. There are plenty of bad men in those night clubs. Fortunately, your boyfriend sent you here in time. You should feel very lucky!"
'Lucky?'
She furrowed her eyebrows, trying to recall what had happened. She remembered being in the nightclub serving alcohol when... As the thought soared through her mind, she immediately sat up from her bed. "Last night..." she started in disbelief. "What happened to me?"
"Last night, you've been drugged by some bad man and almost died. Fortunately, your boyfriend had been there to bring you here, but..." The nurse paused, as a red hue colored her cheeks. "I think it's the best if you talk with him about this. After all, it's your first time. If you use too much strength, it's easy for your body to get hurt and..."
After telling her some dos and don'ts to aid her recovery, the nurse left the ward, holding her tray of medication and leaving Nora alone. Her words rang in Nora's ears repeatedly.
First time? Nora immediately pulled the infusion needle from the back of her hand, wincing when the blood spurted out from her wrists. She jumped out of bed and almost stumbled to the ground, only for a man to catch her.
He reached out to hold her waist, pulling her back to his chest gracefully.
She gazed up at the handsome face. Although he was good-looking, there was something about his face that screamed a certain level of arrogance and indifference.
It was the same face that had clouded her memories, scorching its way into the depths of her mind. Suddenly, the memories from yesterday night had finally resurfaced and she found herself taking a few steps back out of instinct.
Nora blinked her eyes rapidly, trying to get rid of the tears threatening to burst out any moment. "You..." she stuttered out. "You were the one from yesterday."
Charles stared at her. "Yes. It's me."
After getting his answer, she was trembling in anger and shame. "How could you have done this to me?" she shrieked and waved her hands up in the air. "I've never done anything to you, and this is what you did! I'll sue you!"
Charles frowned. He knew exactly what had happened to her, but he had no idea where she got the drug. How could it have been related to him?
However, upon looking at her desperate face, a part of him had felt that this wasn't her plans and that she was also a victim in this situation. He couldn't help but soften his tone. "Look, no matter how much you want, I'll pay. Of course, you can also sue me," he stated. "I won't run from you."
Nora snorted. "Oh, I'll sue you all right. I'll sue you for everything you have!"
Noticing that the matter was about to escalate, Martin, standing behind Charles, couldn't help but break out in cold sweat.
He had deliberately placed the drug into the water to help Charles see what kind of person she was and not fall for her tricks. How was he supposed to know that things would escalate like this?
"Look, we've already apologized to you, okay? It wouldn't be good for your reputation if news were to spread out. Besides, Charles's from a rich family, so you won't even be getting a cent if you really want to sue him. How about we solve all of this as privately as we can?" Martin persuaded softly.
If Charles knew that he was the one who had given her the drug, then the man wouldn't let him get away with it!
"You want to pay for my silence?" Nora scoffed. "You think I'd sell myself for your fucking money? You'd better believe–"
"Nora!" A voice erupted from the other end of the corridor, attracting their attention.
Glancing at the middle-aged couple approaching them, Nora stiffened. "Uncle, Aunt," she managed to say, feeling the blood in her palms freezing at the sight. "Why are you here?" Although she threatened to sue Charles, she didn't want anyone else to know what had happened. But judging from the look on her uncle's face, it seemed that they must've known of what had happened.
Linda Song, her aunt, walked up to Nora and poked her head. "Why didn't you let us know about this first, huh? My friend's daughter was the one who contacted me when she saw you. You're such a troublemaker! Have you forgotten how sick your mother is? How we've helped you pay her medical fees?"
Her eyes darkened, but Nora said nothing in return.
Seeing that, that had shut her up, Linda Song turned to Charles. "You've ruined her purity," she snapped. "If others would know about this, do you know how humiliated she will be? You'd better make sure that compensation is enough to cover her till the end. If not, then we won't let you get away with it!"
"Don't meddle in my business, please," Nora murmured. She had just said that she wouldn't sell herself, and here was her aunt trying to derive a compromise for the both of them.
It was as if they were intently trying to make her lose face!
Before her aunt could say anything, her uncle Mike Ke roared, "What do you mean? You want to take all of his money, don't you? Have you forgotten how much your family still owes us? Your parents have left a huge debt that still isn't paid off. Your damned mother is sick and is in need of very expensive treatment. Do you think we're interested in doing charity? If you don't give us anything, then we'll stop your mother's treatment. She could die for all I care!"
It seemed that family ties were no match for monetary gains.
Ever since her parents had gone bankrupt and her father passed away, Nora had already been deeply aware of their hypocrisy.
Money could truly change the world.
Considering that her mother was still lying unconscious in the hospital, she didn't say a word in response.
Charles, on the other hand, was watching the scene with much interest. It seemed that Nora's entire family was filled with greedy bastards. They must deserve each other then.
Back then, whenever he was met with these types of leeches, he wouldn't even bother to look at them. However, seeing the helplessness in Nora's eyes at the mention of her mother, a part of him softened. He couldn't tell why.
He walked up to her and gave her a small card.
Just as he moved forward, she reflexively took two steps back. Her timid eyes were wide with fear as her mind continued to reply the events that had transpired the night before.
Noticing this, he felt his gut twisting at the sight. "Think it over before you contact me," he whispered.
After leaving the card in her hand, he waved Martin over. Without bothering to look at the older pair, they immediately left the hospital.
Linda Song gritted her teeth in anguish. Now, there was no point in asking for money! Grabbing the young woman forcefully, she screamed, "Look at you pretending to be so pure and sweet! Now, we won't get a single dime! What's the point of sleeping with him huh?"
Mike Ke snarled, "You stupid idiotic girl!"
The two had shouted and screamed so loudly that almost everyone could hear them. Nora bowed her head in shame, wanting nothing more than for the ground to just eat her up.
After leaving the hospital and the mess behind, she could feel her heart clenching. Should she go to work?
Just as she was hesitating, her uncle and aunt had just received a phone call from the hospital reporting that her mother was in critical condition. The doctors wouldn't be able to operate if they didn't give any money.
"Seeing as you still refuse to pay us back, then you could shoulder this expenses," Mike Ke snapped. "Don't expect us to fall for your schemes again!" Nora clenched her fists, knowing fully well that all they wanted was for her to call Charles regarding her mother's operation.
It was a matter about her mother's life, so she had no time to hesitate and agreed without thinking twice.
She dialed his number according to the card.
