"Amen!" My parents responded to the priest's prayer and I shifted my gaze back at my two sisters who were talking to some church members.
I was standing alone on the terrace under the sun while my family was busy talking to some friends and a priest, and I? I don't have friends.
I'm an introverted introvert who hates talking to people whether online or physically. I enjoy being on my own with my cat and laptop, watching movies, and playing games. You don't wanna know what movie I enjoy watching.
"Call your sisters, it's time to go home." My mother instructed me to walk with my dad to our car.
I huffed walking to my sisters who were laughing and talking to their friends as if they couldn't live without them.
As I got closer I avoided eye contact with my elder sister's friend who was crushing on me. "We're going home," I whispered to Ruth's ear.
"Hi, Matt," Naomi called and I smiled a little in response to her greeting.
"Get your butt to the car. We're leaving." I said to my younger sister before walking away and I could hear the ladies teasing Ruth's friend Naomi who seemed to still blush at how I smiled at her.
I walked to my dad's car which was parked at the front of the church, and slid in adjusting to the left side so Ruth and Leah could sit.
"Where are your sisters?" My father asked.
"They are coming," I replied looking out of the car window.
My sister's arrived and entered the car, still talking as though if they didn't do that they'd be dying and I find their conversations irritating because it's always about people, crushes, and clothes!
Why can't they talk about animals, places, books and movies?
"Is that what you were taught in the church today ladies?" My dad seemed to have heard how they giggled at the mention of the clothes they wished to buy.
"We aren't talking about something bad Dad," Leah replied.
"It's just clothes, and it's not as if it's bad clothes. We're planning on buying it for our upcoming church anniversary." Ruth chimed in.
"I asked if that you were taught in church." My dad repeated glancing at them from the rear-view mirror still driving, and they shook their heads. "Henceforth, you won't be talking about material things, and start discussing about the Bible. How many times would I tell you that?" He nagged and I laughed inwardly.
That would make it one decade of a time that I've heard my dad say that to my sisters, and they'd go back to saying Bible and religious kinds of stuff then the next day, they are back to talking about their usual discussions.
"You should be grateful I haven't made one of you to be a nun." My dad added his usual phrase.
"If Mum's parents had made her a nun, you wouldn't have married her," I muttered.
"And that's why I haven't made them be one yet, but that shouldn't make them unholy." My dad preached.
"You should be lucky that's their flaw," I mumbled closing my eyes and wondering how come my dad who is a typical businessman has always been this righteous.
His rules are strict! Live by the Bible, don't break any commandments, and ' I trust you all don't know about LGBT which always makes me guilty.
We finally arrived at our house and I was the first to alight from the car.
I walked to the gate and unlocked it, opening it wide enough for my dad to drive in.
As soon as he drove in, I closed the gate and padlocked it because every Sabbath day, we aren't allowed to go outside but stay indoors which I always enjoyed anyway except for my sisters especially Ruth, the blonde girl who doesn't take after the rest of us brown hair. She is always the one who breaks Dad's rule and would tiptoe to go have a date with her boyfriend, Theodore who I once had a crush on.
I walked with my family inside our sitting room, shutting the door behind me.
As we stepped in the middle of the room we held our hands, forming a circle and my dad led the thanksgiving prayer.
When he finished praying, Ruth and Leah walked to the kitchen to fetch us some chilled water while I took off my suit which I always find uncomfortable.
If I ever mentioned it to my dad, he would scold me and might even ask me to wear a suit to school throughout the weekday.
The long trousers I was wearing were making me feel like it was my first time wearing the trousers, probably because my dad made our tailor alter and I couldn't wait to get it off my tiny legs.
I walked with my suit in my hand and collected a glass of water from Leah which I gulped down to my heart's satisfaction before continuing my walk to my bedroom.
I walked down the hallway before entering my bedroom and Jennabeth, my Himalayan cat ran to me.
I smiled at her, squatting to her height and I ran my fingers on her furs. "How are you, Jenna?" I asked staring at her grey eyes while her tail wagged in response.
I walked to a side of my bed, checking if she ate her food and drank enough water and I was pleased to see that she must have finished her food.
I unbuttoned my shirt put off the trousers that looked baggy on me and walked to the bathroom while Jenna licked some of the water in her bowl.
I stripped off, turning on the shower which ran down my brown hair and white body.
I was still showering when I started feeling pain in my chest.
I groaned clenching my fist on my chest as if it would suppress the chest ache but the pain remained, my body was frozen with terror and I could hear my heartbeat in my ears my breath coming in a short shallow gasp, and the pain was starting to overwhelm me. "Ah!" I shouted gritting my teeth as I began wondering if this was the end of me.
I had always known my heart disease could be serious, but now it felt like the threat was imminent.
"There'd be a church service tomorrow, I want the two of you to be there." My dad said cleaning his hand with a napkin after dinner.
"I don't think I'd make it," Jude pronounced and Dad shot him a look.
"Why? What's more important than serving God?" Dad fired at him.
"Nothing is more important than serving God," Jude replied. "But Dad, you know I've got an interview with Bishop magazines," Jude spoke.
"You do wanna work there?" I asked surprised at his words and he rolled his eyes at me.
"Postpone it." Dad stood up.
"But that's not possible Dad," Jude argued.
"Then will you prefer going to the interview than performing your duty in the church as the first son of a Deacon?" My dad asked rhetorically and Jude couldn't say a word. "Take a look at Keith, he's more responsible and active both in church and the school. I suggest you start taking the footsteps of your brother." With that, he walked away.
"Bro," I called and Jude raised his eyes sharply at me as if I had always been the rival he would never overcome right from birth. "Things don't work this way," I say taking a cup of juice.
"Says the responsible son of Mr. Schuler." He scorned.
"I'm not as daft as you are," I said with a fake smile putting the glass to my lips and I watched my stepbrother's gaze tighten at me.
I sip the juice from the cup before dropping it back on the table. "Even if I was as daft as you are, I'd still be the face of this family," I said rising on my feet and Jude sighed offensively.
"I'm better than you. You know that? At least I don't act ungodly behind closed doors." He returned and I scoffed.
"Having many people crush on me and going to parties is sinful now?" I asked widening my eyes as though I was about to burst into a peal of uncontrollable laughter. "I think you've gotta go back to Sunday school," I mentioned walking out of the dining room, and I would bet he was glaring at me.
I and my stepbrother have never been on good terms since when his mother placed him on the porch of our house, years ago.
Dad had impregnated his mother but lost touch with her when he relocated to London and had even tried finding her but couldn't.
Having no idea that she was carrying my crazy stepbrother, he married my mother and when I was born, five years later the woman appeared with Jude and decided not to ruin dad's marriage so she had to move out of England.
I entered my bedroom and my eyes met with my beautiful mother's picture hanging at the top of the wall where my bed was placed.
Even after my mum's death, Jude's mother didn't come back, and dad has been the one who brought us up since ten.
The ringing of my phone distracted me and I guessed it was one of the girls who collected my number from any of my friends.
"Keith speaking," I called over to the phone as I walked to sit on the bed.
"Hello, Keith. This is Brianna." The lady on the phone was introduced. "We met during one of your football matches," Brianna added and I smiled.
"Oh, really, I had no idea I forgot to ask for such a beautiful girl's phone number." I teased just as I usually do with every lady that falls for my looks.
I could hear Brianna grinning, probably blushing. "It's not too late for us to meet up, is it?" Brianna asked from the phone as I unworn my footwear and socks.
"Huh, I will see if I'm chanced to meet up with your beautiful face." I teased again finally laying on the bed.
"Please get back to me. I'd be expecting. See you in school tomorrow." She bade as if breathlessly speaking.
"School? You attend St. Penelope's college?" I asked surprised that I didn't even know she was a student in our school.
"Of course." She replied and I guessed it was because ladies crushing on me so much that I couldn't even keep track of them and I ended up disappointing them whenever they asked me to date them because most of them were just after my looks, but that doesn't mean I didn't like catching fun with them.
If I were to start dating them all, I was sure my dad's school would be turned into a battleground for the ladies and even guys might end up setting me up out of jealousy. Especially Jude who wouldn't even get a proposal from a lady.
Is he gay? I wondered because he mostly hangs out with guys, and all of his friends never have a girlfriend.
Probably they are practicing some homosexual cult.
At the thought of that, I squint my face in disgust and hope their covers are soon blown.
"Are you there?" Brianna who had said we would meet in school tomorrow hasn't even hung up.
"Yes, sweetheart." I sweet-talk her and her grins were offensive. Well, I was used to it. "Let's meet tomorrow." With this, I hung up.
I breathed out closing my eyes.
.
Monday soon came in a whirlwind, and I was downstairs already having breakfast with Jude who doesn't look like he's interested in going to school for that day.
When I finished breakfast, I walked to the kitchen which led to the living room and I carried my backpack from the couch calling out to Jude. "Bro! Be quick, or else you're trekking." I shouted and walked out of our pretty big English house.
I hopped in the car and put my backpack beside me, before bringing out my phone and scrolling to the internet.
Jude soon arrived, and he sat beside me while our driver drove us off to school.
I was still on the internet when the driver announced our arrival and I tuck it back into my pocket.
Jude alighted from the car getting no ' aww. But when I did, my fans, I meant ladies began awwing excitedly at me, anyone who recently started attending St. Penelope's College will think some celebrity just arrived.
"What's up, pal." I shook hands with Darren and then with my two other friends as I got closer to them in the classroom.
"Brianna contacted you yet?" Bill asked.
"You need to start paying me for getting pretty girls to talk to you." I teased and they laughed.
"I hope when you finish dumping her, you've gotta advise her that there's someone who's the right man for her," Darren said.
"Come on, don't use that word. I don't dump any ladies." I say feigning an innocent look as I walk to my seat after seeing a professor walk to our class.
I had my seat and glanced at the chair beside me but it was empty, and I wondered why the innocent quiet guy who always gets me annoyed with his attitude was not in school yet.
"Leah!" I shouted again running towards my sisters who stopped on their track glancing at me while I stopped running, striding over to their side, and trying to catch my breath.
"What are you doing here?" Ruth fired as I got closer to them.
"Weren't you instructed by Dad not to come to school today?" Leah added in.
"Well, I convinced him," I say standing at their front. "And I remembered we'd be having the midterm exam in our class today," I replied finally having control of my breath.
"Are you that careless?" Ruth fired. "You had a chest pain yesterday, and you're back running today?" She added with a concerned look.
"Well, I couldn't possibly miss school because of that." I smiled. "Besides I took my meds along with me," I assured.
"You know moving around concerning your health is risky. Not even to talk about running." Leah added and I smiled holding my sister's hand.
"We better get to class, we're very late as it is." I was reminded wanting to stop them from nagging at me, especially concerning my health which I don't like to be reminded of. "How was your date with Theodore?" I asked Ruth changing the topic as we walked inside the school compound.
"Don't let Dad hear you say that." Leah teased and I laughed along with Ruth who blushed. "And you too?" I glanced at Leah. "I heard you lying to someone that you were Brianna," I said and she looked surprisingly at me.
"I thought you were sleeping!" Leah exclaimed and I shrugged.
"Who did you lie to about your name?" Ruth inquired with a raised eyebrow.
"A crush. I heard he loves ladies who are named P, B---"
"You're talking about Keith again?" Ruth interrupted and I giggled, my gaze still fixed on Leah.
"Well..." Leah blushed.
"Holy Mary Leah! Keith is three years older than you. You better stop dreaming about him." Ruth advised.
"Is that what I get after helping you bond with Theodore who's a dropout?" Leah pouted with a sad look.
"Ruth didn't mean that." I chimed in. "It's just a bit lame to lie about your name."
"I know. He will soon know that I'm lying anyway." Leah said lowly. "And please, don't you dare tell him I'm your younger sister." She directed the words at me.
"Why would you give such a warning to me?" I asked rhetorically as we entered the school's hallway.
"You're in the same class with him. He might hate dating his friend's siblings." Ruth chimed in.
"I'm not friends with Keith, for Christ's sake," I said knowing how much I usually repeat these words whenever Keith is mentioned, especially when my dad and mum are singing his praises for being so upright and righteous, unlike his elder brother who hate me for no reason.
"But you're his classmates." Leah would say.
"I gotta go to class now," I mentioned this to end the argument of whether I was friends with Keith or not when technically everyone wanted to be friends with him.
Although he's sitting beside me, we aren't friends because I hate people who get too much attention, still I have a crush on me which I always regret.
I stepped inside the classroom and his grey eyes were the first thing I noticed. One reason why I cannot stop crushing on him.
"Why are you just coming?" Mr. Jones, our history teacher asked.
"I'm sorry," I said trying to avoid eye contact with the rest of the students who knew me to be introverted because I hardly mingle with any of them.
I walked to my seat and sat on it while Keith's eyes seemed to be on me, but I'm sure he wasn't directly looking at me probably a lady beside me, and my curiosity took over as I raised my eyes at him and his grey eyes which has been staring at some lady beside me suddenly got locked with my eyes.
This event always happens, I thought. Aware of the fact that I'm the one who always lets our eyes get locked.
Clumsily, I bowed my head and I heard the lady beside me grinning, maybe he already resumed staring at her, and why the holy hell did he always find it comfortable whenever our eyes met?
He is always cool, well part of his charm. While I would be the first to disengage from the staring contest acting clumsily and even girlishly. I was already feeling embarrassed at my act when Mr. Jones called me. "Are you having your class there?" He fired at me as I raised my head which must have been bowed for quite a while.
"I'm sorry." I apologize for opening my backpack and bringing out a history course book.
After history, we had two more classes before lunch and our class turned into a talking competition coming from the females with laughter and jokes from the males, especially from Keith's friend's group which contained cute guys whom I always secretly stared at and I even heard them talking about Brianna, my crazy Leah of a sister.
"You better give her to me if you aren't pleased with her." The one whom I know as Darren instructed Keith who was seated on top of a desk, with the sun hitting his grey eyes that shun just like my cat's own.
"Two more girls already fixed the date they would be collecting your number from me." Bill, the quietest one among them say and Keith was smiling like a fool!
I wonder why he always smiles at the mention of girls or whenever he sees one. It would have been so heavenly if he could smile for only me.
Keep on dreaming! My inner self scorned me and I rolled my eyes away from him, concentrating on the book I was reading.
I was still reading the romance novel Naughty CEO ( you can read it here on Moboreader)when I decided to steal a glimpse at Keith and there. His grey eyes were staring at me!
