"Don't tell me you are not ready for the ball, Penny?" Irene sighed tiredly, glaring at her younger sister who was busy playing with her kitten.
"Ball? What ball?" asked Penny, her green eyes glowing brightly. Even if she did know about the ball, she wasn't a bit interested in attending the vampire ball. She wasn't ready to be a meal for those bloodthirsty ani.... people.
Irene sighed and answered annoyingly," the king invited us to his Ball and Momma wants us to go. She wants to find us a suitor as quickly as possible."
"Suitors? Papa agreed?"
"Yes, I believe he's ready to give us away. We have been living here for too long and the last thing I want is to be a source of a topic for those jobless villagers. Now get ready Penny, I will be in my room if you need help with your dress." said Irene, walking out of her sister's room.
Penny placed her kitten on her bed, stood up, and lazily removed her nightgown. She still can't remember Irene telling her about the ball and even if she did, she will prefer to stay in her room and sleep. She hates the ball, she would choose to be in her room all day instead of having to have a fake smile on her face for the rest of the night.
She sighed tiredly, tying her crimson brown hair in a rough bun. She stood in front of the mirror, admiring the blue gown that was picked by her sister. She might not get along with Irene but she does know how to pick the right gown for her.
"Ready?" Irene asked, walking into the room and standing behind her sister.
Penny stared at her sister from the mirror, she was wearing a red flowing gown, a typical example of a rich young lady. Her sister was more beautiful compared to her and she always stood out among others and that was a very big difference between them. She loves an extravagant lifestyle while she prefers a simple life. As long as she is happy and free, that's all she needs to survive in this crazy world.
"Yeah"
"Okay, Momma and Papa are waiting."
"Hmm" Penny hummed in response.
Irene walked out of Penny's room while Penny placed her cat on her bed, closing her windows before leaving her room.
"I'm worried that Penny will stay single all her life. No man is ready to be with her after what happened with her last fiance."Penny heard her mother's soft voice.
"Don't worry Mama, I will make sure she finds a suitor at the ball. I promise Mama," promised Irene.
Penny fisted her knuckles angrily, she could hear her mother and sister's voices slowly turning into a whisper. For how long will she keep defending herself, it wasn't her fault he died. But no one was willing to listen to her and she was so damn tired of explaining. She won't be getting married, not anytime soon.
"Penny, what are you still doing here?"
"Papa!"
"The carriage is waiting, let's go," her father said with a smile on his face.
She nodded her head in response and walked out of the house with her father. She saw her mother and her sister sitting closely together. Even though she knows that her mother cares about her, there are times she thinks that her mother just doesn't want her. It might be her illusion but then...
"Penny?" her father called bringing her out of her little world.
She entered the carriage, followed by her father, and the journey to the castle began.
This will be the first time the Leos family will be visiting the castle. The castle was a place that was out of bounds for villagers like them, that's why it came as a surprise when the king invited them to the ball. Irene couldn't wait to meet the thousands of suitors that she will be meeting while Penny just couldn't wait to get back to her bed.
An hour passed before they finally reached the castle. Both Irene and Penny gasped at the huge mansion in front of them, they had seen so many mansions but this was different.
"You both should behave yourself, okay?" their mother instructed.
"Okay, Momma" responded Irene while Penny just nodded her head nonchalantly.
The Leos family stepped foot into the castle for the first time, not knowing it won't be their last either.
"Mama, I will take Penny with me," said Irene, not waiting for her mum's response she dragged her little sister to the dance floor.
"What are you doing?"
"Getting you suitors," Irene responded with a smile on her face.
"I'm not interested in finding suitors, Irene and I'm sure you know that," Penny said sternly walking away from Irene.
Irene smiled awkwardly to hide the pain in her eyes. It seems to Penny, that she will never be that sister. Not like she cares anyway, she will prefer her out of her life.
Penny walked around the castle aimlessly and finally ended up in the garden. Her eyes glowed, admiring the flowers and the moon that was shining up in the sky. Even if she knows that what she did was rude, she wasn't ready to apologize to Irene, at least not for now.
Lost in her thought, she failed to notice a shadow standing right behind her. A man was leaning on the wall, his flickering between silver and red glowing brightly in the darkness. One of his legs was placed on the wall as he stared at the human girl like a prey he couldn't wait to devour yet with a keen interest in his eyes.
What caught his attention was the dress she was wearing, too plain compared to what the other ladies were wearing. But what he was so curious about was what she was doing here when she was supposed to be looking for an eligible bachelor.
"Penny?" a voice called.
"Mr. Rosi!" she greeted with a bow, unconsciously biting her lips.
"Irene said I would find you here. What are you doing here, enjoying the stars?" he asked, standing beside Penny.
"Not really, I just love the peace I could find here," responded Penny with a faux smile on her face.
"Hmm"
"Why are you here, Mr. Rosi?"
"I was wondering if you would like to go with me to the village square, in the next two days?"
Penny's heart skipped a beat for a second, her lips curling up into a faint smile. "I will think about that, Mr. Rosi but thank you for asking."
He smiled awkwardly before responding, "It's my pleasure. Would you like to go back to the ball?"
"Certainly," responded Penny.
They both left the garden, completely unaware of the shadow that has been standing away from them.
"Penny," he muttered softly.
"What a lovely name'"
Penny walked into the ballroom, side by side with Mr. Rosi. Her gaze fell on Irene who was busy dancing with a man who looked no less than a man from the higher class but he wasn't a vampire. Her eyes were glowing brightly, smiling at the man who was also admiring her.
'It seems she likes the man,' She mused annoyingly, fighting the urge to roll her eyeballs.
"Irene? She dances so gracefully doesn't she?" Mr. Rosi commented
With a faux smile on her face, she answered. "Yes,"
"Do you mind dancing with me, Lady Penelope?" he asked, his left hand stretched out waiting for her response. He works as a magistrate for the king and he was lucky enough to be placed in Penny's village. The minute he had set his eyes on her, he had grown to like her and not her sister who was always acting calm and graceful. Her green eyes were what caught his attention and then her calm and nonchalant attitude drew her to him but he isn't certain if she has that kind of feelings towards him too. But he was ready to do anything just to win her heart, just anything.
"I..." she paused for a while meeting her mother's gaze. Her mother nodded at her to accept the man's hand and even though she wasn't willing to listen to her mother. She wasn't ready to listen to her mum's never-ending lectures either.
"Of course not, Mr..."
"Cyrus, call me Cyrus instead."
Penny responded with a smile instead and walked to the center of the ball with Cyrus. She felt her sister's gaze on her and chose to ignore it instead. To everyone else, she has the best relationship with her sister but deep down they both know they don't. Irene was someone she once trusted but now, she doesn't have a little bit of trust in her elder sister. She had hurt her greatly beyond repair and the latter was just not ready to accept her faults.
She was dancing with Cyrus, yet her mind was wandering around the palace. Unbeknownst to her, a man was standing amid the crowd watching her like prey. He was no other than the man from the garden.
His eye was on the green eyes girl that was dancing halfheartedly. He could feel her thoughts wandering around the places but what caught him by surprise was that he just wasn't able to take his eyes off her.
He stood there for a while before turning around to take his leave. He won't be meeting her now, instead, he would be waiting for her to fall into his hands. He would be waiting for her to walk into his den all alone.
Penny got tired of dancing and had to excuse herself from Mr. Rosi, though her sister Irene was enjoying all the attention being showered on her. She walked out of the ball once again and instead of going to the garden, she decided to take a walk around the palace.
A palace is a place where many dreamed of it and was also one of her dreams. Not that she dreamt of being a queen like the other village girls but she was instead, interested in how beautiful and big the castle was.
She was lost in thought and failed to notice that she had been walking far away from the ballroom and walking closer to the castle. Her eyes admired the different paintings on the wall and also the well-sculpted sculptures.
As she move closer to the castle, her eyes fell on a painting. What caught her attention was the man's face, his eyes that looked a bit silver but most importantly his silver hair. She has never heard of anyone having silver hair except the king himself. But was the king supposed to be this young.
"Lost, aren't you?" a soft voice whispered in her ear, sending goosebumps all over her body. She gasped in shock and turned around almost immediately. It was no other than the man she saw in the painting, it was the king.
"I'm sorry!" she apologized almost immediately with a bow. She has heard a lot of rumors about the king, rumors about how cruel and brutal he was.
His lips curled up to a smile, a smile that didn't reach his eyes. He leaned on the wall, with his hands in his pocket. His gaze on the girl who still had her head bowed. It seems like, the green eyes girl won't be leaving his castle anytime soon.
"That didn't answer my question." he taunted
"I got lost, excuse me," she responded, preparing to leave for her to be pulled back by a strong arm.
"Ahh!" she gasped in shock, her body hitting his hard chest.
He leaned closer to her and whispered in her ears, "I don't remember asking you to leave, do I?"
"I..." she stuttered, unable to think of what to say. The scent coming from his body, overwhelmed her mind stopping her from thinking straight. His muscular hand around her was making her mind wander and was stopping her from thinking straight. In a sentence, she has begun to fall deep into a temptation that could ruin her.
He leaned closer, pulling her closer to him. The rose scent from her body was driving him crazy and he was losing his mind every damn second. He just wants to drag her to his room and play with every damn part of her body but... Her innocent eyes and the way her green eyes glows made him want to cherish her every second and minute and he was going to do just that.
He could hear her heart beating loudly against her ribcage and that was enough for him to know that he affects her already. He released her from his grip and moved a little away from her.
Penny released the breath that she had been holding unconsciously, she turned around to meet his red eyes. His eyes were so calm, that she was able to stop her thoughts from wandering around but that doesn't mean that she still wasn't able to feel his touch lingering on her skin.
Without thinking of questioning him, she turned around and left in a hurry. He watched her leave and slowly the smile on his face faded.
A man appeared in the corridor, walking towards the king. It was no other than Roman, the king's advisor, and trusted friend.
"Find out more about the girl, Roman."
"Every little detail."
"Okay, King Zephyr!"
It was past midnight, Penny was in her room with her cat on her lap. She sat down beside the window admiring the stars, at the same time thinking about the silver-haired man she met, the king.
She closed her eyes, remembering every little thing that happened between them. She wanted to get him out of her mind but she just can't. She wasn't able to get him out of her head and that was affecting her.
She heard a click and turned around to see Irene walking into her room in her evening wear. Her eyes lingered on the pink evening wear that was once hers. Their father being a tailorman gave her the gown for her eighteenth birthday. At that time, she was still so close with Irene and that was also the year her sister showed her true colors. She gave the gown to Irene because she claimed to have washed her only nightgown but thinking about it now, it seems she lied to her.
She removed her gaze from Irene and stared at the stars instead, choosing to ignore her. Irene noticed this but chose to ignore her actions and went straight to what she came here for.
"How do you find Mr. Rosi, Penny?" asked Irene, taking her seat beside Penny.
"He's just like every other man, Irene," answered Penny, her tone laced with a little anger.
"You do know, that's not the answer I want Penny. Do you like Mr. Rosi or not?"
Penny's lips curled up into a huge smile, a daunting yet bright smile. "If I like him, you will try to win over his heart, right? And if I don't, you will try forcing him on me. Tell me, Irene, are you not tired of your fake life already?"
"Penelope!" Irene yelled angrily and stood up to face her sister. For the first time, she could see the coldness in her sister's eyes. Her eyes were just too cold, way too cold.
"Was that a lie? Oh, I'm sorry! Don't tell me you were worried."
"I do care for You, Penny but you are overstepping your boundaries!"
"Boundaries? You were the one that overstepped your boundaries when you tried to win Sebastian's heart when you knew he was my fiance. You overstepped your boundaries when you lied to everyone that he killed himself because I betrayed him and you overstepped your boundaries, Irene Leos when you choose to make me the villain and made mother question every one of my decisions. That's what is called overstepping boundaries Irene. Now, if you don't have anything else to say please leave my room, will you?" said Penny, not bothering to look at Irene for a second.
"You..." Irene gazed at her sister for a while before turning around to leave.
Penny let out a huge breath and soon after, tears fell from her green eyes. Irene was someone she trusted, someone she was ready to lay her life down for but it seems her sister will never be able to do that. She only wants her to tell her that, all that she said was a lie. She needed an explanation even if it was a lie, she just want that elder sister back. The sister who always have her back, who was always there for her. She wanted her sister back but it seems that will never happen, she had lost her forever.
She closed her eyes and placed her head on her pillow before falling into a deep sleep, followed by a dream. She dreamt of the king, the silver-haired man.
Back in the castle, Zephyr stood on the balcony of one of the guests' rooms. A glass of blood was in his right hand and even though he looked calm, his mind was wandering around and he couldn't stop himself from thinking about the green eyes girl, Penny.
A knock came through the door and soon after a maid walked in. "Good evening, my king."
Zephyr turned around, his gaze on the maid that walked in. He placed the champagne glass on a table beside him and walked toward the maid. He could hear the loud beating of the maid's heart and just like that his thoughts drifted off to Penny. He could feel her scent in the room and he needed no one to tell him that the girl has taken control of his mind and soul.
He pulled the maid towards him, kissing the nape of her neck and down to her chest. He pushed her to the bed and in the process tore off her dress. Without even thinking of worshiping her body first, he pounced straight into her with one word on his lips, Penelope.
After laying with the maid, he placed his fangs on her neck, sucking every drop of blood from her body. He ordered the guards to dispose of the body of the maid and then washed his body changing into his night robe.
Roman walked into the room with a few parchments in his hand. He placed the parchment on a table and then took his seat beside Zephyr. He was an advisor only during the day but when it was evening or midnight he take back his role as Zephyr's friend.
"You killed the maid?" questioned Roman, taking a sip from the champagne glass.
"Hmm" Zephyr hummed in response.
"The girl?" asked Zephyr, his gaze was now on Roman.
Roman's lips curled up into a smile. It looks like the king was interested in the girl and that was something new and unexpected.
"Her father is a tailor man..."
"I want to know about the girl, Rome, and not her family?" Zephyr interrupted, glaring at Roman.
Roman chuckled softly and continued, "She was once betrothed to a rich man, an architect to be precise. But the man died 'unexpectedly', people said he committed suicide which sounded fake. Because the man was said to be free from any troubles unless there is more to it. Recently, she's been meeting Cyrus Rosi, her village's magistrate. "
Zephyr's eyes were void of emotions and were too calm. His lips curled up into a smirk," Let's pay a visit to the village tomorrow, shall we? "
He was coming for her, coming to bring his queen to his palace.
