Love? No, rather a game of convenience. Sophia Whyte is the victim of a cruel hoax, forced into becoming the contract wife of famous billionaire, Noah Milton. She can't escape, overwhelmed by her crippling debt and her mother's debilitating condition. After being bullied by Noah's girlfriend and entire family, she is humiliated and kicked out of the Milton mansion as they no longer have use for her. Five years later, she returns, now a mother of the sole heirs to the Milton wealth. All she feels is hate and a need for revenge. All Noah feels is regret, he start to creep into her heart, one gift at a time.

Chapter 1 Cut-off

"Here, sign it and leave!" he demanded. Sophia stared down at the document tossed at her. 'Divorce agreement' she read in her mind. Sophia smacked her lips. 'He didn't even wait for a solid week before getting rid of me,? she thought to herself.

She wanted to believe it was a dream, but that was her reality. Her husband wanted a divorce from her, after two years of marriage. Even if the marriage was based on a contract, it was still a marriage. Noah Milton paced the floor of what was supposed to be he and Sophia's bedroom, a place she never dared to enter, except on special occasions.

She recorded the look on Noah's face before speaking, "Noah, your dad just-" Sophia swallowed the next words about to escape her lips as Noah's icy grey eyes met hers.

Sophia Whyte was married to the most influential man in the city. The CEO of Milton group Noah Milton. It would be an honor for any woman in the whole city to be engaged, not to talk of being married, to the most sought out man in the city, but for Sophia, it was simply a nightmare.

"Did you not hear me Whyte? I said get up and leave," Noah's eyes gradually changed color as his voice remained stern. His icy gaze sent chills down Sophia's spine. `He referred to her by her last name`. She doubted her husband even knew her name.

Sophia was Noah's executive secretary before they got married. It would have been the most beautiful Cinderella story making the headlines. 'Rich CEO married poor office secretary out of love', but that wasn't the case.

A few months after she started working at the Milton group, Noah's company, her mother fell terribly ill and needed an emergency surgery. Sophia was a hard worker and doubled her effort month after month.

Just when she had finally gathered the courage to ask for a three month advance on her salary, Noah blatantly refused her request claiming she hadn't worked hard enough to make such a request. Instead of honoring her request, he decided to take advantage of the situation she was in.

He offered her a deal that any woman would have agreed to without complain, she had to get married to him for two years. In exchange, he would take care of all her mother's medical bills and her loans. Noah knew how financially unstable she was.

At first, she didn't quite understand it, a wealthy CEO who had captivated the hearts of all the women in the city, it wouldn't have been exaggerating if someone said Country. He could have any woman he desired, he sure had the money and looks for it.

During the course of the marriage, Sophia understood why the immaculate billionaire needed a wife even though he already had a girlfriend.

It didn't take long before she agreed. The pressure was too much for her to handle, she had no other choice. The doctor threatened to withdraw her mother's treatment. Looking back at it, Noah was cruel, he would have let her mother die if she didn't agree to his terms.

Their wedding came as quite a shock to everyone in the office, as well as family and friends. Noah only related with people of high social standing and wealthy backgrounds. Sophia had none of that, she was poor and barely getting by.

"But Noah-" she tried to speak but was cut off almost immediately.

"Don't you dare address me by my name, remember your place!" he demanded. Sophia gulped hard, "I'm sorry sir." A stranger, that was what she was to him. Even after two years of marriage he still treated her like a common staff member, she had no place in his house anymore.

"Okay, if you want me gone that bad, I can't protest," she said flatly, pulling the document over and signing it.

"What?" he asked with an arched brow.

"I said OKAY, I'm leaving." She stood up from the bed unceremoniously. It seemed like the way she agreed without complain had gotten him a little upset; his frown deepened.

"Since you want to go that badly," Noah strode into the walk-in closet, "Maybe I can help you pack." His intention was to throw her clothes on the floor, but he was shocked when he didn't find any.

"Don't worry, I took them out that day." She explained folding her arms against her chest, a tear escaping her eyes. Noah's eyes trailed her whole body, "What on earth is fake sympathy for? I know you were only nice to my father because you wanted money. Now that he's gone you want to continue your manipulation!"

Sophia loved his father so much. Noah's father treated her like his own daughter. So much so that she slept in the hospital room where he was admitted. He wouldn't let anyone apart from Sophia get close to him. Sophia's heart sank to her feet, that was one of the most painful things she had ever heard him say. 'Fake sympathy? Manipulation? If anything, I'm the only one getting manipulated'.

Noah toyed with her emotions at any chance he got. Some days he was sweet, other days he was unrecognizable. Being with Noah Milton was an emotional rollercoaster, fun at the beginning, scary towards the end.

"Don't you say that, don't you dare-" Sophia's voice was shaky, she didn't have the words to explain her disappointment. Noah's eyes reddened and his nostrils flared up. He took giant strides towards Sophia watching as her eyes widened.

Noah held onto her shoulders, pinning her to the bed. "Say that again, say it!" he demanded. Sophia squirmed under him, trying her best to get out of his grip. He examined her expression. Noah saw the growing fear in her eyes and withdrew immediately.

"Leave," he ordered, pointing in the direction of the door. "You've stayed here for way too long." He rubbed his hand against his forehead. It was something he did when he felt frustrated, "Forget it!" he said after a moment of silence, "I'll have Thomas send your things to you," he didn't even spare her a glance.

"There's no need for that, I'll pack my things and be on my way, it will be faster." Sophia's remark immediately triggered a strange anger in Noah. She wanted to leave, and fast. He expected her to beg, even though he wouldn't listen to any of her pleading, he would have at least liked to hear it.

"No!" he shouted at no one in particular.

"I know I'm useless but I think a few bags won't be a hassle!" she remarked.

"So, you've finally come to terms with your insufficiency. Your services over the year have been average, you couldn't even hold a child in your stomach. Leave the city if you may, I can't have people associating both of us together.

Chapter 2 The realization

Sophia gripped her chest tightly as if it felt like her heart was about to escape from her chest. Her hand slipped over her mouth as she tried to muffle her cries. She left the bathroom in the guest room scanning the room.

'Two years' she whispered. She had lived in the guest house just a small distance from the main mansion. The building was neat with very modern amenities. She didn't lack anything and had a dozen staffs at her beck and call.

Noah reduced the amount of attention she was being given by the staff when his girlfriend, Kira Robinson, the daughter and sole heir to the Robinson group started to nag him. He had to give in to her demands. Kira was spoilt and insatiable, not the type of woman anyone would want to spend their whole life with.

A union between the Milton's and the Robinson's would consolidate both families in the world of business for a lifetime. None the less, that wasn't what George wanted for Noah. Kira Robinson was never a good fit. She acted on a whim because she believed her actions were inconsequential. Her father always took care of any mess she created.

"You're still here?" Sophia turned in the direction of the hoarse trying her best to wipe her tears with the sleeve of her knitted sweater.

"Whyte," he called her in the most disgusted tone he could summon. Noah had concern written all over his face, "why are you crying?" he asked her.

Sophia paused almost dramatically when she saw Noah's expression. He was doing it again, pretending like nothing had happened. She spent two years of her life married to the most insensitive person. The worse part was, she had already fallen way too deep.

Sophia and Noah never slept together in the same room, the only time they did was when George Milton, Noah's father was around.

George was diagnosed with a terminal heart disease the year they got married. He was on different medications, which at that time, were working perfectly. After a while, his body stopped responding. George Milton battled his condition until the end. He was a strong man who began the Milton empire that was highly praised by everyone.

"I'm not crying," she lied, stuffing her clothes into her suitcase. Noah approached her subtly, he held her face gently, wiping the tears off. This action startled Sophia a little, but she didn't stop him. His touch felt nice on her skin, she prayed that he wouldn't stop but she knew that was her being delusional.

Every day was a constant struggle for her, 'which lover will I get today?' she always thought to herself. Noah planted a kiss on her forehead.

"Whyte, I don't think I can do this anymore," he spoke softly against her skin, his breath sent tinkles to her senses. It made her knees buckle.

She scoffed, "Sophia, my name is Sophia. Noah-" she was cut off by a knock on the door, it was Kira.

"Is she still there?" Kira whispered.

"What did I tell you about snooping in my house?" Noah asked with a hint of rage in his voice. He couldn't stand Kira or her entitlement. She was like a little kid and threw tantrums when she didn't get what she wanted. She flipped her hair before walking out. Noah always knew how to put her in check.

Sophia stood there, lifeless. She couldn't believe how stupid she was, almost falling for his excellent theatrics again. She continued dumping clothes inside her suitcase. When she was satisfied, she zipped it up and pulling it towards the main door.

"Sophia, what are you doing? Did I say you could leave?" he asked looking down, his height towering over her. Her emerald green eyes glistered in the warm lighting of the living room. Sophia stared at him in silence.

He scoffed, "If you want to leave, do it. But don't take anything that I bought with my hard-earned money. I know how people like you can be."

'People like me?' A wry smile tugged at her lower lips. She let go of the suitcase immediately, causing it to topple over. Sophia stared at Noah who stood there speechless. She walked to the mirror and examined herself, taking off every item Noah had gotten her.

One of them made her chuckle in pain as she bent down to take of the expensive piece of jewelry on her ankle. Noah had gotten her a leg chain used to identify sex workers. He said "it would make her remember where she came from so, she could never feel comfortable in his house". But she had already done that. She made up all these thoughts in her head, praying daily that he would change but he never did.

She looked him dead in the eyes, her face contorting in pain. Sophia pulled his palm open, placing the jewelry in his palm, "For your next hoe."

Sophia walked towards the massive gate of the Milton estate, obviously after the stunt she just pulled Noah wasn't going to have a driver take her out.

Just then her phone began to vibrate and she picked it up immediately. It was her best friend, Chantelle Wilson. She had texted her earlier to pick her up from Noah's house.

Chantelle parked her car in front and Sophia climbed in. "Are you okay?" Chantelle asked.

"Just take me home," Sophia prompted without an ounce of emotion in her house.

The money she earned at Milton group should have been enough to rent a neat apartment in a good area, but since she was paying off a lot of debts, including her mother's bills and school loans, it was quite difficult to live.

Her house was in the worst neighborhood. It was the cheapest option they could find and was suitable enough because it had two bedrooms and one bathroom. That way, her mother could live relatively comfortably.

After she got married to Noah, her mother moved in with her younger sister's family. It was quite a difficult adjustment, given the fact that her aunt was married with kids of her own.

Sophia made up for it by pitching in a good sum every month. It was able to feed all six of them. It was hard but they did what they could to survive and lead an honest life, just like her father.

"I want to leave," Sophia broke the silence as she, her mother and Chantelle sat on the coffee table sharing worried glances. Noah's words echoed in her head.

"But why baby?" Ava, Sophia's mother asked. She was off her medications and had been healthy for six months. She even went back to her job as a pre-school teacher. Ava couldn't understand why Sophia would want to leave the city where she grew up.

"I completely agree with you," Chantelle chipped in, causing Sophia to smile a little. Chantelle turned to Ava, "After all you guys have been through, you need a fresh start. I can arrange it all for you, you wouldn't have to bother about the logistics."

Sophia smiled at that, sending her mother a reassuring look. Ava couldn't say no to Sophia, especially not after all the sacrifices she had made.

All her dreams had burned to the ground. Her first love and the man who took her virginity on a drunken night, everything was gone. There was nothing left in the city for her, she had to move on.

Chapter 3 His motive

The light from the huge floor to ceiling windows had him turning uncomfortably. He stood up promptly to find his phone. Noah staggered immediately falling back into his king-sized bed.

He propped himself up with a pillow with a look of disbelief on his face. His eyes narrowed when he found the anklet he had given to Sophia, vividly remembering his warning to her, "Take it off at your own risk."

In a house filled with luxury, the poor girl stood out like a sour thumb. All he wanted was for her not to get accustomed to the comfortable life he had provided. Noah stared at himself in the mirror, he looked pathetic. It was another night of drinking himself to sleep.

Ever since his father died, he found it really difficult to sleep properly. He had to be on medication or scotch, which to him was medication. His head spun a little when he remembered all the terrible things he had said to Sophia. The guilt engulfed him like a large quilt.

He didn't know what to do with himself. Noah shot out of bed. His head was completely occupied with images of Sophia.

In a moment, he mustered all the staff that worked in the mansion. Normally when he gathered them it didn't mean anything good, someone was getting punished. Sweating profusely and practically panting, they stood with arms crossed behind them.

"Can you all relax; I just came with instructions." Noah had to clarify. The temperature in the room had already dropped to a negative. In that moment, he remembered the fearful look in Sophia's eyes as his staff mirrored the same expression. Noah noticed how their shoulders slumped almost simultaneously.

"If Lady Sophia Milton enters this house, make sure to inform me immediately. I don't care whether I'm in a meeting or even on top of a helipad. Do you understand me?" He asked to make sure they understood him clearly.

Noah wanted her back, and fast. He couldn't bring himself to ask her back, his pride wouldn't let him. He didn't know how worked up he would get without her by his side. He dismissed the staff immediately.

His golf clothes were pressed and carefully laid out on the bed. He walked into my bathroom to take a shower switching the temperature from hot to cold, trying hard to wash away the thoughts on his mind.

All he could see was the look on Sophia's face. He didn't know how much of a monster he had become. 'Was that really how she saw me? As a monster?'

Noah wrapped a towel around his waist and walked out of the bathroom. This has never happened before, was this warm feeling in his stomach, guilt? His heart sunk to his feet.

Since the day he met Sophia at the office during her interview, he loathe her. In as much as she was educated, she was clumsy and annoying. She couldn't even try to compose herself knowing fully well she was the only candidate personally interviewed by the CEO.

Her physical appearance, every curve and corner, reminded him of his ex-girlfriend who abandoned him on the alter. It was like his past had come to haunt him. He had his reasons for hiring her, first Sophia was the most suitable person for the job because of how humble she was. And the other reason was Chantelle who had personally recommended her for the job.

It was only a matter of time before she grew and fit perfectly into the position. But she had grown too much. Noah couldn't count the number of times his business partners and colleagues had made an offer with him to have Sophia transferred to their company, he refused each time.

She was a meticulous and very hard worker, and above all, she was his. He never gave her credit for anything. Even after their marriage, he would always tell her that she wasn't good enough for him.

He always played back those drunken nights when he slept with her. After his ex-girlfriend, he never slept with anyone, expect Sophia. Even Kira didn't have the privilege of seeing him shirtless.

There was something about Sophia, so different, it made him crave her more each time. Maybe George saw something he couldn't, she was the only girl his father ever approved of for him. His marriage contract was for a limited time. All he needed was to use her claim his inheritance. After that they would get divorced.

His father's sudden death changed the narrative completely. But now, he was starting to regret. His father demanded he bring home a wife. George already knew his health was declining and he needed assurance his company was in good hands. Sophia was the only girl he ever approved of.

Noah knew fully well George wouldn't approve of Kira even with her wealthy and respectable background. He rather preferred someone of a humble background and Sophia was perfect. 'Do I miss her?'

A knock on his room door pulled him back to the present, "Sir, lady Kira said to ask if you would still be attending?" Sarah, his personal assistant and office secretary explained.

"What? Why couldn't she call me directly?" he asked feeling disrespected that she could call the landline instead of his personal phone.

"She claimed she called you severally without getting a response," Sarah explained. Noah glanced at the phone in his hand, 'why didn't I hear it ring?' he asked himself staring at the numerous calls he had missed. Was he that distracted? Noah faced her again. "You may leave," he instructed.

He pulled open a drawer in his walk-in closet. After picking a watch that matched his car key, Noah made his way to his and slipped into his red sports car. He drove straightway to meet his girlfriend, Kira Robinson at her father's country club. If he didn't get there soon, she'd nag the hell out of him.

Immediately he got out of the car, a valet emerged almost immediately grabbing his key out of his hand. He walked through a small passage way to meet his girlfriend and some other members of their elitist group.

He often referred to them as 'insufferable bastards' but had no other choice than to associate with them for the sake of business. "What's good man," Gerald, his best friend stood up immediately after spotting him. Gerald Buford was his best friend, their parents were very good friends and business partners.

"The latest orphan," Randall Walton called. He hadn't been long since his father passed and they couldn't show him even a little sympathy., Randall wasn't the best with emotions and had a very strange way of showing empathy. Noah chuckled regardless.

Randall Walton was a doctor, so he had seen too much death to be moved. The Walton's family owned the world of medicine. Randall's father's hospital saw George, Noah's father through his treatment until the end.

"And also, the latest billionaire," Brad sputtered. Brad Astor's family were the law and controlled most state and national offices, it gave him a huge ego. The only reason Noah hung out with him was because his spoilt sister, Tanya was his girlfriend.

His family also had connections in high places so there was no need to throw him away.

Noah gave a wry smile. No matter how upset he was, he couldn't lose his cool, "He was still my father guys, show some respect." They responded with an eruption of laughter. Noah gave a half smile, clenching his fists tightly.

"Hey, chill out you dickheads, I know you wouldn't mind putting a bullet in your parent's heads but unlike you some of us actually like our parents," Savannah defended. She was practically the only voice of reasoning in the group.

Savannah Windsor's family had good military power. Apart from Kira, Noah's girlfriend, Savannah was the only girl in the friend group. She was the smartest of them all.

"So, you aren't going to say anything," Kira pouted. As always, she had to make herself the object of attention. Kira was always so self-centered. She couldn't even bother enough to send her condolences after his father's death. Showing up would be a stretch.

"I'm so sorry," he blew her an air kiss but that didn't seem to satisfy her.

Noah turned his attention back to the others, nothing he was going to say would make her feel better. She tugged his shirt slightly, "Noah, you're not going to say anything," she batted her eyelash.

"I'm really sorry Sophia, I'll make it up to you."

Until Kira's eyes widened Noah didn't hear the words he spoke. Why was Sophia all he could thing about, it was starting to drive him crazy. His friends shared surprised glances.
