Annie's POV:
"Good afternoon, everyone! Welcome to Project Melos. This is the latest invention of our generation. I hope everyone will have a good working relationship. Goodluck to all scientists and we may have our success. You can now proceed to your designated offices," Chairman Jeff opened to us.
"It's funny how warm they welcome us even though we're newbies, Annie. Oh, we're definitely going to get paid a lot. Even if our wives leave us, we'll be able to see our children through elementary school! We have to get better!" Bonniesaid happily.
"Yes, we have to go. Let's go to the floor that's written. We're on the same floor," I said.
"Come on, we'll tour the building later. We need to get familiar first," he added.
We are all scientists newly recruited by the government for Project Melos. Bonnie and I already have experience because we used to work at the World Care Association (WCA). We are scientists, Biology is the field of expertise.
We arrived at a floor that was all pure white. We are wearing violet uniforms. I have a red bar code tattoo on my hand because I was born before the year 3030. I didn't get Melos Syndrome. I need to have a barcode because I'm confused if I don't have one.
Barcodes are what separate people. Those with red barcodes lived before Melos Syndrome with a complete body. Those with black barcodes have disabilities who lived before MelosSyndrome and those with violet barcodes lived in the year 3030 and above with Melos Syndrome.
From the year 3030, all babies born have Melos Syndrome. No one survives so the whole world has been very alarmed for the past 20 years. Now heavily funded by the government in the hope that Project Melos will succeed. Two generations have tried to eradicate it. First was Project Pliris, Project Completum, and this current one is Project Melos. If it still doesn't work I don't know. So the people who will succeed today have a lot of trust and confidence in us.
Just as we arrived at the Biology section, Bonnie and I sat next to each other at the table. Scientists are separated depending on the field of expertise. Our floor is for those who specialize in Natural Science. We will study everything. All possibilities and de-possibility to know the root cause of Melos Syndrome and the cure for it if there is one. I don't even know if it still exists because it's a syndrome. The main thing we can get is prevention.
Bonnie and I have set the table. After we set-up and put things in, the intercom rang just in time.
"Calling the attention of all hired members of Project Melos, please proceed to the meeting hall. I repeat, calling theattention of all hired members of Project Melos, please proceed to the meeting hall thank you," announced on theintercom.
"Come on, that looks like an orientation regarding Project Melos. We're one step away from reality and perfection. I can't believe we got this job," Bonnie said happily.
"Me too, Bonnie. I'm very happy because we got this job. It's a great opportunity, the salary is great. We will definitely beable to live for our children. It's good that we were accepted even though we've been together for five months," happy I said.
We walked straight to the meeting hall. Bonnie and I meet different Race. There are blue eyes, brown eyes, black eyes, green eyes, gray eyes, even beautiful eyes.
We are here in the center of Avalon, Equinoxia, Calypso thelargest continent today. Only three continents remain today named Calypso, Solara, and Vortexia. Then around 2025 there was a pandemic that ate almost the entire population of the world. There the men ran out, luckily it was saved again.
In order to understand each other regardless of Race, we use an earpiece that can translate over a hundred languages. I don't know but only select languages that have been in use since the last hundred years. Fortunately, Tagalog is still used today and I am happy there as a Pinoy. Then Bonnie, Bonnie Miller, is an American. He is my best friend.
Annie's POV:
In the high part we sat here in the meeting hall. It's like a gymnasium with lots of seats. At the front is the speaker who will speak. Dr. Jackson Grimshaw, a scientist. He will lead Project Melos.
Everyone clapped and that's when the introduction began. We also introduced our other boss and head from here in Avalon. In Solara, I used to come from that country. Bonnieand I used to work together so we met.
"Good morning to all the new members of Project Melos! I congratulate you on your entry. I hope we can finish Project Melos successfully. I expect you all to work hard and give all your knowledge to make this project a success," introduction by Dr. Jackson.
The assistant director of Project Melos went up next. Dra. Ye, a chinese-american. The Race or Race of people is still based on the earliest country system in use.
He has already spoken about Project Melos. I listened carefully because I wanted to know important information about it. I must contribute well because I will not waste this opportunity. I want to save humanity from Melos Syndrome, especially my unborn baby.
"I know that you are excited to know the information about Project Melos. This is only a summary and we will give you, each one, documents regarding this project to further expand your knowledge. Also so that we can improve theProject even more Melos and overcome it," began Dra. Ye.
We all applauded. I looked at Bonnie who was wearing Dra. That's the attention. I listened again.
"For the past 20 years, it has been unheard of for babies to develop Melos Syndrome. No one, anyone or anything, knows where this disease comes from. No one knows how to treat and prevent Melos Syndrome. It seems that the lack of body parts has become normal among newborn babies. Thenumber of babies who are stillborn is also increasing. There is also an absence not only of limbs but also of internal organs like the case of Yuta Aramaki who was born without hands, feet, even intestines," explained Dra. That's why I felt sad and rubbed my stomach. I will not let my baby be born with Melos Syndrome. I will do everything to keep my baby safe from that syndrome.
"Let's also add to the knowledge based on the theory and therecognized knowledge of everyone, Melos Syndrome is a type of mutation that no one knows where it came from. Almost all animals have been studied but it is not a type of virus. In people also can't see the source. Does this disease seem to be a big issue for people. Since last hundred years there was TelosVirus that almost wiped out the number of people around the world, now it is the worsening Melos Syndrome.
I want everyone to be well informed because success is what we need to achieve not only in the field of medicine but also in Physics and Chemistry as well as in other branches of science.
Project Melos is a project that aims to create tools that can detect a baby's problem, how to prevent Melos Syndrome, even prevent it. Because we all know where babies are. With our technology Melos Syndrome cannot be detected. It's hard to believe but that's the truth," explained Dr. Ye at length.
Many gasped at a video of a baby with a water sac attached to his leg. One that is clear like jelly. It's a foot shape that doesn't seem to have been formed. When the video was played a doctor punctured the sac. There the water disappeared and it appeared that it was the baby's leg that was stunted in development. I can't believe how that happened.
"This is one of the shots last year of Chan Feng Yun, a baby boy. He came out with a water sac on his leg. It was not edited because it was all taken in the act. No one can answer what happened to him but it was reported that MelosSyndrome can't even be detected by ultrasound and thechildren appear normal because of the water sac that thebabies already had inside the mother's stomach. These are the limbs that are hindered from developing into a water sac. Nothing also a study that proved why and what that water sac really is. It was only then that it was discovered because of Feng Yun who was born that the water sac was formed after he was born. In addition, Melos Syndrome was also found to be something that inhibits the body for the baby to develop in its correct form. It's like a very serious illness that has no medicine. It doesn't even kill the child, but it causes a huge disability," explained Dra. Ye. .
I couldn't believe it, it was really a big revelation. MelosSyndrome is really getting worse.
Annie's POV:
Dra. Ye added more information. . According to her, there have been two cases of the appearance of the body water sac in babies. That's what most people call it because thecontents of the child's leg were like water earlier. When it was pierced it was like a water balloon bursting. I can notbelieve. This is how Melos Syndrome has reached. It has gotten worse. It is not fatal but the complications it causes to a baby are great. Especially in our time now that there has been a recorded case of a stillborn baby.
Dra Ye. explained further and I listened carefully. His lecture lasted two hours so we were all hungry. After thelecture we went to the cafeteria. I'm excited to taste the food here. I heard that the food served here is really delicious. The government has a lot of funding here and the employees need adequate nutrition so the quality of the food is like a five star restaurant.
Bonnie and I just ordered a salad. We both ordered chicken macaroni salad and a bottled water. I eat well because I'm really hungry.
"Annie, why is Melos a syndrome and not a virus?" asked Bonnie.
"Because Melos Syndrome has not been proven to be contagious. That's why they say everyone knows it's a mutation. There is a change in the DNA structure of babies after birth," I answered.
"Wow, that's great. In the next few months, you'll definitely be the head of the Biology Department. Your brain is really different, Annie. You're what humanity will expect," Bonniejoked.
"Luh, stop me. You're going crazy again," I said laughing.
We both ran out of the chicken macaroni salad we ordered so we bought more and wrapped it up.
Suddenly the intercom rang so Bonnie and I stopped walking out of the cafeteria. We looked up even though we couldn't see the face of the announcer.
"Good day everyone. We will have an early dismissal today because all of the heads of each department will have a meeting. Again, we will have an early dismissal today because all of the heads of each department will have a meeting. Thank you, " announced over the intercom.
Bonnie smiled and sang. I just shook my head but was also happy. My brain was immediately tired during Dra's lecture. Yes, That's okay because we learned a lot. It's also fun that my brain is filled with new knowledge. I can use it as a contribution to Project Melos.
Bonnie and I left the building after taking the things from our office. We boarded the bubble car, a circular taxi that could fit four inside. Just enter the address of the house in the GPS and it will automatically run on the track, there are bubble cars that also have their own invisible track. Just drop a coin before getting off depending on the policy of thebubble car taken. Sometimes a coin will be dropped before it works.
I was entertained by the beautiful scenery around. A modern world full of advanced technology. Humanity has come a long way. It is very different from previous centuries. They say that if ancient people saw this, they would think they were in a futuristic movie.
–
After a week...
Bonnie and I got home from work. It's been a week and we've done nothing but research. We collect blood from people aged 20 and under with severe cases of MelosSyndrome. We are testing them to see how they will react to other drugs and if there is a cure. But for the past week, we haven't even made any progress.
Bonnie and I are staying in the same house. I was orphaned early because my father used to be a soldier and my mother served in the government. I chose to be a scientist because it's what I really want. At first I was also thinking of joining the army but I knew I couldn't handle it especially now and intensified the training. The war is more acute now because of the terrorists.
"Hey Annie, you seem to be thinking deeply. Care to share? Is that your lovey dovey?" Bonnie pissed me off.
"Oh my gosh, stop telling me about Robert! You're really going to receive a punch from me! The two of us got tricked by those two guys ! I won't let Robert and Chan wordsdeceived us again ! " I scolded Bonnie.
"This time, no. I wanted to tell you something. This is probably the right time," Bonnie said and sat next to me on our couch in the living room.
I was suddenly nervous. "What will she say to me?" I was suddenly afraid. Later he turned out to be a terrorist, just kidding. But I suddenly grew curious about the body.
"What's that? I'm nervous about you," I asked.
"Because it's like this, you know that this is the first child of Chan and I , right? We have another child, his name is Billy. It's been two years. I'm sorry and I kept it a secret from you. You know that Chan is living here in our country illegally, that's why he's hiding unlike Robert. I hope I can trust you to hide it, I know you will because we're friends. If the time comes that something bad happens to me and Chan, I hope it doesn't happen, I'll entrust Billy to you. Please Annie," Bonnie explained making my jaw drop.
I was speechless because of the shock. I know people like Chan, illegal citizens like him. Maybe Chan had a previous case and hid before the code was applied to all citizens. That's the only way I know he will be considered an illegal citizen. I didn't even think they had another child.
"Is Billy also an illegal citizen?" I will ask.
"No, Billy is legal and registered. It's just that my son has Melos Syndrome but I was able to save up and put a robo-arm on him. Billy can move well," Bonnie said happily so I breathed a sigh of relief.
"Why are you asking Chan to watch over Billy? He is in dangerous to his father. You can still empathize with mother and daughter," I asked.
"There is no one to take care of Billy and Chan and I have gotten back together. I'm sorry I didn't tell you right away. How are you and Robert doing? Chan told me that they don't see each other much anymore because Robert is busy in another country," Bonnie asked maliciously.
I'm just in agony, this girl is really talkative. Robert was busy running their business, that Italian. He tried to call me sometimes but I ignored him. I know it will be news about my pregnancy and not me.
Chan and Robert will be best friends. Chan Giovan is a half-Korean half-American so he fell in love with Bonnie. Helooks like a k-pop star. Robert, Roberto Gucedelli, is a pure Italian. He looks like a mafia but that one is a businessman. We both met at a bar and Bonnie and I got together. It looks like it's his second time, he and Chan have known each other for a long time. I thought that was their first meeting.
After talking with Bonnie, we decided to cook. I was the one who proposed to microwave the food. We bought ready to eat chicken macaroni salad again. These two are our favorites. We even conceive the meals together. It's really delicious but we don't want it cold. We want to be warm.
While Bonnie and I were eating we felt the ground shake and heard a loud explosion. My heart was racing with fear and suddenly I sat on the floor and so did Bonnie.
"W-What's going on?" I asked nervously.
"Oh, I saw on TV a while ago that there were terrorists from Craig! I didn't think they were here in Avalon! Merciful, they kill innocent people! They fight against the government! They are called Hawks!" Bonnie shouted.
We heard another explosion so we crawled into our room. Bonnie and I hug each other. He picked up the phone to call the police. I peeked out the window and my eyes widened just like that.
There was an explosion in the distance so I was nervous. It was getting closer and closer. It was very big and surely a lot of people died. If Bonnie and I hide here and don't leave, we might end up alive! I can't agree!
"Bonnie, pack your clothes! We have to get out of here! Theexplosion is getting closer and closer! The terrorists might catch up with us here, hurry!" I shouted nervously and dragged Bonnie to the cabinet.
