She Saved His Empire, He Broke Her Heart

Author: : Diversion
Genre: Romance
For five long years, I was Jane Doe, Alexander Sterling' s quiet, unassuming assistant, secretly working tirelessly to save his company from the brink of collapse. I poured my life, and even our family' s legendary Westbrook Star diamond, into the anonymous investment that kept him afloat, all for the man I deeply loved. Day in and day out, I remained by his side, hoping he would finally see past the "Jane" I presented and recognize the woman who sacrificed everything for him. But then, Isabelle Vance, all wide eyes and soft sighs, arrived, and suddenly, I was invisible, my every effort unacknowledged, my devotion unseen. His attention, his genuine laughter, the warmth I once cherished, was entirely for her, the new favorite who simply had to ask. I watched silently as Isabelle and her cruel assistant mocked me, sabotaged my work, and ultimately framed me for a ridiculous attack, turning him completely against me. In a horrifying public spectacle, Alexander, blinded by Isabelle' s lies, ruthlessly fired me, branding me a dangerous troublemaker without a second thought. Left bleeding on the sidewalk after his security guards physically coerced me out, my reputation was systematically shredded, every sacrifice I had made for him now spitting in my face. The ultimate betrayal left me numb, the years of silent devotion to a man who couldn't see me crushing my spirit beneath the weight of his callous disregard. Wasted years, unacknowledged love, and now, public humiliation – the bitter taste of utter betrayal mingled with the cold drizzle on my face, solidifying my decision. Yet, a strange clarity settled over me as the five-year term for the Westbrook Star ended. Jane Doe was dead, irrevocably gone. As the Westbrook Star returned to my possession, a cold, unyielding fury replaced the pain, signaling Seraphina Westbrook was finally coming home, ready to build a new life with the steadfast Ethan Hayes and leave Alexander Sterling to the bitter regret he so richly deserved.

Chapter 1

Five days.

That' s all I had left at Sterling Enterprises, five days until I walked out of here as Jane Doe, unassuming assistant, and walked into a new life as Seraphina Westbrook, bride to Ethan Hayes.

A life arranged by my Aunt Eleanor, a life away from Alexander Sterling III.

Alexander, my boss, the man I loved, the man who currently didn' t even see me.

His attention was glued to Isabelle Vance, his deceased mentor's daughter, who had appeared a few months ago, all wide eyes and soft sighs.

I watched them from my desk, a small, bitter taste in my mouth.

He laughed at something she said, a genuine, warm sound I hadn't heard directed at me in what felt like ages.

It was for him, for Sterling Enterprises, that I' d pawned the Westbrook Star, our family' s most treasured heirloom, a diamond legendary not just for its size but for its history.

Five years ago, his company was on the brink of collapse, and I, the hidden heiress Seraphina, had used my one significant asset, the Star, as collateral with a man they called "The Collector."

A five-year term, a desperate measure to give Alexander the capital he needed to survive, to rebuild.

He never knew. He just saw a sudden influx of anonymous investment, a miracle.

I became Jane Doe, his assistant, just to be near him, to watch him succeed with the foundation I' d secretly provided.

Now, the five years were almost up, the diamond would soon be mine again, and my time as Jane Doe was ending.

My upcoming marriage to Ethan was a practical matter, a decision made with a clear head, a head that had finally accepted Alexander would never see past the "Jane" I presented.

He was too busy being charmed by Isabelle.

She leaned closer to him, her hand brushing his arm, and he smiled, that charismatic, powerful smile that used to make my heart stumble.

Now, it just tightened something in my chest.

Isabelle was everything I wasn' t, at least not as Jane. She was openly vulnerable, demanding his care, his resources.

And he gave them freely.

My phone buzzed. A text from Aunt Eleanor.

"Venue confirmed. Dress fitting tomorrow. Ethan sends his regards."

Ethan Hayes. A good man, from a good family. A safe harbor.

I glanced back at Alexander. He was explaining something on his monitor to Isabelle, his brow furrowed in concentration, then smoothing out as she nodded, her expression one of pure adoration.

He was completely oblivious to the storm brewing inside me, to the life I was about to leave, and the one I was about to reclaim.

My resolve, though, was firm. This charade had cost me enough.

It was time for Seraphina Westbrook to come home.

Chapter 2

The call came later that afternoon, while I was packing the last of my personal items into a small box.

It was Aunt Eleanor, her voice crisp and satisfied.

"Everything is proceeding beautifully, Sera. Ethan is a remarkable young man, so considerate."

I could hear the relief in her tone, the unspoken words about how long she' d worried, how much she' d disapproved of my silent, unacknowledged vigil for Alexander.

"I' m glad, Aunt Eleanor," I said, my voice carefully neutral.

"He' s even agreed to discuss relocating his primary West Coast operations to be closer, you know. That' s quite a commitment."

"It is," I agreed. Ethan was nothing if not committed.

Just then, Alexander walked past my cubicle, his phone pressed to his ear. He paused, his gaze snagging on me for a moment.

"Yes, the wedding is next Saturday," I said into my own phone, my eyes meeting his briefly.

His brow furrowed. Confusion flickered across his face before he turned away, still on his call, his attention already shifting.

"...Isabelle needs that report by five, make sure it' s on her desk."

He didn't even register who I was talking to, or what wedding it might be. Why would he? Jane Doe didn't have a life that intersected with his in any meaningful way, not anymore.

He was already walking towards Isabelle' s office, his focus entirely on her.

The casual dismissal, the complete lack of curiosity, it didn' t even sting anymore. It just... was.

Aunt Eleanor was saying something about the guest list.

"Just the closest family and friends, dear. We want it to be intimate, dignified."

Dignified. Yes, that was what I wanted now.

My past devotion to Alexander felt like a distant, foolish dream, a heavy cloak I' d worn for too long.

Taking it off, even if it left me feeling exposed for a moment, was the only way forward.

The family, my family, was waiting. And they were relieved. I could feel it even through the phone line, a collective sigh of a burden lifted.

Alexander was still blind, still wrapped up in Isabelle.

And I was, finally, looking ahead.
