She Played the Long Game

Author: : Sutton Horsley
Genre: Billionaires
My life as a New York socialite was a carefully constructed facade, enduring my husband Richard' s relentless affairs and emotional cruelty. I stayed for our daughter, Lily, and the prestigious Harrison name. But everything shattered when Richard brazenly paraded Chloe, his young associate, into our lives. She wore my perfume, used my hand cream, and tried to charm my child, while he publicly shamed me, always choosing her. The ultimate betrayal came when I discovered Chloe wasn' t just his mistress: she was my half-sister, daughter of my late father, desecrating his memory to further her own agenda. His casual cruelties turned violent, isolating me further. Then, a positive pregnancy test, a brutal reminder of his control, felt like a cruel joke-until it ignited a chilling realization. This unwanted life could be my weapon. Every forced smile, every feigned acceptance, became a calculated move in my new game. How could I escape this gilded cage, reclaim my dignity, and protect my daughter, when the man I married was systematically erasing me? And how far would I go to ensure his family' s precious legacy became my ultimate leverage? My plan began with a single, icy demand made to his powerful parents, a threat so audacious it sent shivers through their old money veins.

Introduction

Chapter 1

Ellie Vance waited outside the pediatrician' s office on Park Avenue, holding her daughter Lily' s hand. The city air felt thick, heavy like the unspoken things in her marriage to Richard Harrison Jr. He was supposed to meet them, back from another "business trip." Their black Escalade pulled up, the chauffeur opening the door. Richard got out, all smiles and expensive suit, but an unfamiliar, cloying perfume clung to him, not her own. That was the first sting.

Then she saw the woman in the backseat. Chloe Sanders, a junior associate from Harrison Holdings, Richard' s family company.

"Ellie, darling," Richard said, his voice a little too loud, "Chloe needed a lift downtown, just a courtesy ride."

Chloe leaned forward, her smile wide and sweet, too sweet.

"Mrs. Harrison, so lovely to see you again."

Chloe held up a small, expensive bottle. "I am so terribly sorry, I hope you don' t mind. I saw your hand cream in Richard' s travel bag – the L'Occitane Shea Butter, my absolute favorite too – and mine was all out. I just had to use a tiny bit. I bought you a new one, of course."

The cream was Ellie' s, a small comfort she kept. Now it was a shared thing, a casual trespass.

Richard put a hand on Ellie' s arm. "It's fine, Ellie. Accept it."

His touch was light, but the pressure was there. Ellie nodded, a tight, forced movement.

Chloe then turned her attention to Lily, who was shyly hiding behind Ellie' s legs.

"Hi Lily, sweetie," Chloe cooed, offering a small, brightly wrapped lollipop. "I heard you were so brave at the doctor's today."

Ellie stepped slightly in front of Lily. "Thank you, Chloe, but she' s not allowed sweets before dinner."

Lily looked disappointed but didn't argue.

Richard frowned, his voice sharp. "Ellie, don't be rude. Chloe is just being nice."

He looked at Chloe with an apologetic smile, then back at Ellie, his eyes cold. It was a public correction, a small humiliation.

Chloe got out of the car, her eyes meeting Ellie' s for a brief moment, a flicker of something unreadable.

"Well, this is my stop anyway," Chloe said brightly. "Thanks again for the ride, Richard. See you at the office."

She gave Richard a lingering look before walking away.

Richard watched Chloe disappear into a sleek office building, a soft expression on his face that Ellie rarely saw directed at her.

"She' s a good kid," Richard said, turning back to Ellie, his tone dismissive of any tension. "Ambitious. Reminds me of you, when you were younger."

The comparison felt like another small cut.

Lily, oblivious, tugged Ellie' s hand. "Mommy, can we go home? I want to show Daddy my drawing."

Richard' s expression shifted as he looked at Lily, a brief moment of warmth. Then he turned to Ellie, his eyes hardening slightly. "You know, Ellie, you' re making a big deal out of nothing. You' re too sensitive."

He opened the car door for them. "You should be more grateful I even made it back for Lily's appointment with all the work I have."

Ellie got into the car, Lily scrambling in beside her. She buckled Lily in, her movements stiff.

She remembered countless nights like this, Richard' s casual cruelties, his affairs she was supposed to ignore for Lily' s sake, for the Harrison name. He' d once told her, after she found a lacy bra not her own, "It' s just sex, Ellie. It doesn' t mean anything. Don't be a shrew." She had stayed, for Lily, for the illusion of a stable home.

But this felt different. Chloe wasn't just a fleeting affair. Richard was bringing her into their space, into Lily' s orbit. It was a wall crumbling, the one Ellie had carefully built around her heart and her daughter.

Later that night, in their cold, opulent bedroom, Richard reached for her. She saw him looking at her, but his eyes seemed to see Chloe.

Ellie turned away. "I' m tired, Richard."

He grabbed her arm, his grip tight. "Don't be like this, Ellie. You know what I want."

His voice was rough, demanding.

"She' s just like you were, Ellie," he whispered, his breath hot on her neck. "Eager. Fun."

Then he added, his voice soft but chilling, "Come on, Ellie. Be a good wife."

Ellie squeezed her eyes shut. "Richard, please, not tonight."

He ignored her, his anger flaring. "Don't you dare refuse me," he hissed, his weight pressing down on her. "I own you."

She lay there, a silent scream trapped in her throat.

The next morning, Richard was all smiles, making pancakes for Lily as if nothing had happened. He kissed Lily' s forehead. "Daddy' s little princess."

Ellie watched, a hollowness inside her.

A few weeks later, a persistent nausea started. Ellie found herself staring at a positive pregnancy test in the bathroom, the two pink lines a cruel joke.

She remembered the last time she was pregnant, with Lily. Richard had been in Monaco with some model. He' d missed the birth, sent flowers. Love had died then, a slow, painful death. This new life felt like an anchor, chaining her further to a man she despised.

But there was Lily. And the Harrison legacy. Elizabeth, her mother-in-law, always reminded her, "A Harrison heir is paramount, Eleanor. Everything else is secondary." Ellie had to think, to be smart.

Richard was often out late. "Board meetings," he' d say, or "client dinners." Ellie knew better. One evening, she couldn't reach him. His phone went straight to voicemail. Panic, a cold snake, coiled in her stomach. Not for him, but for the charade she had to maintain.

She drove herself, a rare act of independence. She found his car parked outside a trendy Brooklyn apartment building. Chloe' s building.

Ellie waited in her own car, across the street, for hours. The city lights blurred through her unshed tears. She saw them finally, Richard and Chloe, exiting the building. He was laughing, his arm around Chloe' s waist. They paused under a streetlamp, and he leaned down, kissing Chloe tenderly, a long, slow kiss that spoke of intimacy, of a connection he no longer shared with Ellie.

They got into his car, not the chauffeured Escalade, but his personal sports car, and drove off. Chloe was in the passenger seat, where Ellie should have been, in the life Ellie was supposed to have.

Ellie sat there, the engine off, the cold seeping into her bones. She felt the baby stir, a tiny flutter. A reminder of her trap.

Chapter 2

The next day, Lily came home from school, chattering about the Hamptons charity carnival Richard had taken her to over the weekend. Ellie hadn' t gone, pleading a headache.

"Chloe was there, Mommy!" Lily said, her eyes bright. "She was helping at the unicorn ride! She gave me extra tokens, and Daddy bought us ice cream."

Ellie' s blood ran cold. A setup. Richard had engineered it.

Driven by a cold fury, Ellie did something she rarely did: she searched for Chloe Sanders online. It wasn' t hard to find her. Chloe' s Instagram was public, a curated highlight reel of a life Ellie recognized – the life of a kept woman.

There were photos of Chloe in Aspen, St. Barts, on private jets. Gifts from Richard, Ellie knew the brands: Cartier bracelets, Chanel bags, the latest iPhone. One photo made Ellie' s stomach churn. Chloe, beaming, holding Lily' s hand at the carnival. In the reflection of a shop window behind them, a man was taking the picture. Richard. The caption read: "Fun family day out with my two favorite people! ❤️"

Family. The word was a slap.

Ellie stared at her own reflection in the darkened phone screen. The "dignified front" she' d maintained felt like a cheap costume. She looked pale, tired, a ghost in her own life. This wasn' t just infidelity; this was erasure.

The next morning, she didn' t call. She drove to Richard' s Wall Street office, the city a blur of angry horns and indifferent faces.

She walked past his secretary, ignoring the startled protest. The door to his inner office was slightly ajar. She heard voices.

"...if you really want me to, Chloe, I' ll do it. I' ll divorce her," Richard was saying. His voice was calm, decisive.

Ellie' s breath hitched. She felt a wave of nausea, then a strange, cold clarity.

She pushed the door open.

Richard and Chloe were standing close, Chloe' s hand on his arm. They sprang apart, Chloe looking flustered, Richard' s face darkening with fury.

"What the hell are you doing here, Ellie?" Richard snarled.

Chloe quickly adopted a wounded expression. "Richard, she... she' s been following me. I feel harassed."

"Harassing her?" Richard turned on Ellie, his voice dangerously low. "You come to my office, unannounced, and harass my associate? You will apologize to Chloe. Now."

Ellie looked from Richard' s enraged face to Chloe' s feigned vulnerability. Something inside her snapped. The years of swallowed pride, of quiet endurance, broke.

"Apologize?" Ellie' s voice was quiet, but it cut through the tension. "No, Richard. I don' t think I will."

She looked directly at Chloe. "You enjoy playing the victim, don' t you? But I know what you are."

Chloe' s eyes flashed with anger before she masked it with tears. "Richard, she' s scaring me."

Richard stepped in front of Chloe. "That' s enough, Ellie! You' re hysterical."

"I want a divorce, Richard," Ellie said, her voice steady now.

Richard stared at her, then laughed, a harsh, disbelieving sound. "A divorce? Don' t be ridiculous. You wouldn' t dare."

"Try me," Ellie said.

He scoffed. "Fine. Have your lawyers call mine. Our pre-nup stipulates a thirty-day cooling-off period in this state. You' ll come to your senses by then." He dismissed her with a wave of his hand, turning back to comfort Chloe.

Ellie walked out, her head held high, the word "divorce" echoing in the silent, opulent hallway. Richard moved out that night, to one of his city apartments, he said. Ellie packed a small bag for him, as he' d instructed his assistant to tell her. She made sure to include nothing personal. A few days later, her lawyer called Richard' s. The clock started ticking.
