Chapter 1

Five years into their marriage, Tobias Stevens faced bankruptcy and was burdened with huge debt.

He was in poor health and worked odd jobs at an old warehouse. His earnings were barely enough to cover the rent.

To support the family, Dorothy worked by day and collected bottles from roadside bins to sell for money in the evenings, often taking her daughter, Margaret Stevens, with her.

On Dorothy's birthday, Margaret surprised Dorothy with a cheap cupcake bought with coins she had saved for half a year.

Dorothy was deeply moved. After saving diligently for months, she finally gathered enough money to buy tickets and take Margaret to the amusement park she had always dreamed of visiting.

As they reached the entrance, they unexpectedly saw Tobias there. One of his arms was around the waist of his first love, Liza Briggs.

His other arm was holding Liza's daughter, Sandra Briggs. They were heading towards the rides.

"Daddy..." Margaret called out loudly to Tobias's back.

A staff member of the amusement park immediately turned around and stopped Dorothy and Margaret. "Sorry, but the amusement park is closed for a private event hosted by Mr. Stevens today. You'll have to come back another day."

"You... you must be mistaken. How could Mr. Stevens have rented out the entire amusement park? He doesn't have any money at all.

Dorothy couldn't believe her ears.

The staff member gave her a disdainful look and said with sarcasm, "How do you know Mr. Stevens does not have any money? He's the president of Misys Group. He is rich enough to rent one hundred amusement parks, not to mention this one."

Dorothy felt a heavy weight on her chest. Her lips turned pale as she could not utter a single word.

Margaret looked up and gently tugged at Dorothy's sleeve.

She asked innocently, "Mommy, does Daddy have a lot of money?"

Dorothy lowered her head and looked into Margaret's eager eyes. She was unsure how to respond at that moment.

Of course, the president of Misys Group would be wealthy.

Dorothy felt as if a heavy weight was crushing her chest, suffocating her as she saw Margaret in clothes that were too small.

She tried to say something, but no words came out.

Margaret perhaps sensed Dorothy's sadness and shook her head understandingly. She smiled and comforted Dorothy, saying, "Mommy, don't be upset. Maybe Daddy is busy. Let's go home now. We can come back to the park when he's not busy next time."

Her voice grew lower until it faded away.

Dorothy's heart skipped a beat. She lifted Margaret's face, which was tear-streaked.

She hurriedly embraced Margaret tightly and almost fled as she turned to leave.

Yet Margaret kept looking back. There was no hiding the admiration and longing in her eyes.

She had never been to an amusement park, not even once.

Yet Tobias had spent a lot of money renting the entire amusement park for Sandra.

On the way home, memories flooded Dorothy's mind.

Seven years ago, Tobias had been blinded in a car accident while saving Liza.

After losing his eyesight, Declan was driven out of the Stevens family by its collateral branches and lost control of the company.

From that day on, Liza quickly got married to another guy and never returned to the Stevens family.

Dorothy stayed with him and took care of him for two years. She had worked hard to get things through with him.

She had kissed him and embraced him and survived those difficult days and nights with him.

Only after consulting famous doctors across the nation did she manage to get Tobias's eyesight restored.

Afterward, Tobias married Dorothy, who had always taken care of him.

Deep down, Dorothy knew Tobias didn't love her, nor did he care for their daughter, Margaret.

But she had never known that after his eyesight recovered, Tobias had already regained control of the company.

Yet, the very first thing he did after regaining power was to feign poverty and deceive Dorothy and Margaret for five years.

During the past five years, she endured great hardships to help him shoulder the burden of their destitute family.

But she never had the idea to break up with him until that day.

Dorothy could no longer forgive his heartless deceit and betrayal.

She wiped away her tears, took out her phone, and dialed a number. "Please help me draft a legal letter to sue Tobias Steven, the president of Misys Group, for infidelity during our marriage."

"Certainly, ma'am. The legal letter will be delivered in seven days."

Chapter 2

After Dorothy finished the call, Tobias returned home.

She held her breath in the bedroom, listening to the sounds from outside.

As usual, Margaret rushed to the door with joy to greet her dearest father.

But what greeted her was Tobias's characteristically cold silence.

He didn't even spare a glance at her.

Margaret, perhaps long accustomed to this, didn't react too strongly.

She remained standing in the entryway and gazing expectantly at Tobias.

After he had changed his shoes, she said with hope in her voice, "Daddy, my birthday is in a month. Can you buy me a princess dress?"

Tobias looked impatient, and his tone was dismissive. "We'll talk about it later."

In the past, Margaret would quickly give in after he said this.

But today, her small frame stood straight and tall. Instead of retreating, she persisted with a stubborn determination. "Why do we have to talk about it later?" she asked.

It was just a dress. Why did they have to talk about it later?

In her eyes, Tobias could rent out an entire amusement park and take another girl to have fun. So why couldn't he buy her a dress?

Margaret harbored a deep sense of injustice, but she didn't dare voice it. She could only continue looking at Tobias with those pleading eyes.

Tobias might be in a good mood or have a rare pang of conscience.

He nodded and agreed to buy Margaret a dress.

Margaret was overjoyed. She ran to Dorothy's room to share the wonderful news immediately. "Mommy, Daddy promised to buy me the dress. He really did. He's so good to me. I'm so happy."

Dorothy watched Margaret, who was so joyful, and gently stroked her face.

She felt happy for Margaret. At the same time, she felt sorry for the latter.

Margaret was the daughter of the president of Misys Group. She should have grown up with a silver spoon, wearing designer princess dresses and enjoying every attraction in any amusement park.

But Margaret was thrilled over a promise that had yet to be fulfilled.

Dorothy thought about how she, too, had once been completely swayed by Tobias's "sweet talk."

It led to five years where she single-handedly raised Margaret while working tirelessly to help pay off his medical debts.

It wasn't until that day, when she saw with her own eyes him taking Liza and Sandra to the amusement park, that she clearly understood she had been living a lie for five whole years.

Now she wanted to see how he would handle the exposure of his deceit.

Dorothy suppressed the pain in her heart, settled Margaret down, and returned to her room in silence.

She dug out a worn-out box from the closet and began organizing the evidence she had collected.

She had printed out every single record of the payments she made over the past five years to help Tobias repay his debts.

Initially, she had kept the records simply for tracking purposes. She never imagined these papers would become solid evidence to expose Tobias's lies.

With each piece she organized, her heart grew colder.

And her lingering feelings for Tobias were utterly shattered.

If it weren't for her love for Margaret, she would have wished to break up with him immediately.

Margaret waited patiently for one day after another.

A week passed, but Tobias still hadn't brought back the dress she longed for.

She dared not confront him, fearing that even the "promise" would turn to nothing.

During these days, whenever she heard a car engine turn off outside, she would immediately rush to the window and look out.

She hoped that when Tobias returned, he would be carrying a bag with her dress inside.

But every time he returned empty-handed, except for the occasional takeaway bag of leftovers.

Nothing else.

Finally, one day, Tobias returned home carrying a large bag containing clothes.

Seeing this through the window, Margaret thought Tobias had finally bought her the dress.

She stationed herself early in the entryway, ready to receive her long-awaited gift.

As soon as the door opened and Tobias walked in, Gretchen rushed forward and grabbed the bag from him.

"Daddy, you finally bought me the dress," she exclaimed joyfully, opening the bag to look at her dress.

However, the bag contained not a princess dress but an adult woman's coat.

Margaret's hopes were dashed once again. Overwhelmed with disappointment, she turned and ran back towards the bedroom.

She buried herself under the covers, crying her heart out.

Tobias paid no attention to his daughter's feelings. He tossed the bag to Dorothy and said, "Wash this coat by hand. I'll pick it up tomorrow."

Dorothy didn't need to think about it. The coat undoubtedly belonged to Liza.

She snapped, and her consciousness was blank for a second.

In the very next moment, propelled by a sudden surge of impulse, she hurled the bag violently at Tobias.

Chapter 3

A stunned expression flashed across Tobias's face as he stared at Dorothy in disbelief, as if looking at a hysterical shrew who had lost control of her emotions. "Dorothy, what the hell is wrong with you?"

Dorothy's face was even more woeful than if she were crying. "What was wrong with me? Tobias, ask yourself honestly, who's really out of their mind here?"

"This dress belongs to our warehouse manager's wife. She recently hurt her hand and can't wash clothes. I want to please her, so I brought her coat home for you to wash it." His words were smooth, but Dorothy no longer believed them.

She lifted her chin and glared at him coldly. "And what about Margaret's dress? Didn't you promise to buy her a dress long ago?"

A flash of irritation flashed across Tobias's face. He turned and walked toward the bathroom, even without glancing at her. "It's just a dress. I'll buy it."

He said it lightly, but every promise he made took an eternity to materialize.

And he always used phrases like "No rush," "Wait a bit longer," or "We'll talk about it later."

Dorothy had long had enough. She couldn't be bothered to argue with him any further and turned to go to the bedroom.

Margaret was lying on the bed, and the covers were over her head. She was shaking with sobs.

Dorothy gently pulled back the covers and saw Margaret's face covered in sweat and tears, and even her eyes were red from crying.

Dorothy struggled to contain her emotions.

She crouched down and asked Margaret seriously, "Sweetheart, if Dad and I break up, who would you choose to stay with?"

"Mom, are you not going to want me anymore? I don't need the princess dress anymore, and I won't beg to go to the amusement park again."

Margaret thought her parents were arguing and breaking up because she had done something wrong. So she was so fearful.

Dorothy's heart ached as she saw Margaret like this.

She hugged her tightly and gently patted her back.

She said with difficulty, "It's not your fault, Margaret. The problem is between Mommy and Daddy. It has nothing to do with you."

Margaret peeked out from her mother's embrace. "Mom, can we give Dad another chance, please?"

Dorothy could see that Margaret still hoped Tobias would fulfill his promises, even just once.

Dorothy didn't want to let Margaret down. So she reluctantly nodded and said, "Alright. I will give Daddy another seven days. We'll wait for him to buy you the dress."

The next morning, Dorothy rushed to work at the store after taking Margaret to kindergarten.

Because she needed to drop off and pick up Margaret every day, no regular company would hire her.

She could only work at a private clothing store in the mall.

The hours were relatively flexible, but the pay was pitifully low.

She had been a top student in her college, and her first job's salary had been enough for her comfortable life in the city.

After getting married and giving birth to Margaret, she had been a housewife for four years. But the professional world had moved on.

Without connections or support, she was stuck struggling at the bottom.

Upon arriving at the store, the manager immediately called her over. "Dorothy, there's a customer trying on clothes. Go and assist her."

"Okay." Dorothy nodded and headed to the fitting rooms.

Her eyes immediately locked with a man sitting on the couch.

Her husband, Tobias, was there. He was accompanying Liza to buy clothes at the very store where she worked. Fury instantly ignited in Dorothy's heart.

If not for the sight of the little girl's dress in the shopping bag next to him, she would have exploded right then and there.

Tobias avoided her gaze and was afraid to meet her eyes.

The awkward tension between them was broken when Liza got out of the fitting room after having changed into a dress.

As soon as she saw Dorothy, a trace of venom flashed in Liza's eyes. She tugged at the dress she was wearing and complained, saying, "This dress is hideous! Waitress, bring me that champagne-colored one."

Dorothy numbly handed over the dress in her hands.

Liza tried on over twenty outfits, bossing Dorothy around like a servant.

Tobias watched the scene indifferently. He just played on his phone on the couch.

Dorothy knew Liza was deliberately targeting her.

But she held her temper until Liza threw a dress she struggled to retrieve from the mannequin right into her face.

Dorothy finally had enough. "Ma'am, you've tried on over twenty dresses. If you're not satisfied with our selection, perhaps it's best not to waste any more of our time.

"The customer is always right. I can try on as many dresses as I like. Who do you think you are to tell me what to do?" Liza sneered coldly.

Then she turned to glance at Tobias.

While he wasn't paying attention, she elbowed a nearby clothing rack. It instantly collapsed onto her.

"Ah... help..." she screamed miserably.

Her cries brought Tobias and the manager rushing over.

Tobias immediately lifted the rack off Liza.

He asked with concern in his eyes, "Are you hurt?"

"Tobias, I only tried on a few dresses. But the saleswoman was out to get me and deliberately pushed over the rack to hurt me."

Liza curled up in Tobias's arms, throwing all the blame onto Dorothy.

Tobias's face darkened, and he scolded Dorothy coldly. "Dorothy, what are you doing? Apologize to Liza now."

"I did nothing wrong. Why do I have to apologize?" Dorothy stood her ground.

She said while pointing at the scattered clothes and toppled rack, "She elbowed it herself. Many customers saw it!"

But those around either busied themselves with tidying or pretended to look elsewhere.

No one dared offend the CEO of Misys Group.

The manager was nervous and sweating profusely. He pointed at Dorothy and shouted, "Dorothy, how could you lay hands on a customer? Apologize to Miss Briggs now, or you're fired."

Dorothy laughed, but tears streamed down her face.

Seeing her laugh, Tobias became angrier.

He shouted again, "Dorothy, apologize to Liza now. If you do, we'll let this go, and you can keep your job."

He knew too well that Dorothy needed that salary to support herself and Margaret.

It was his leverage over her.

In front of everyone, Dorothy took off her work uniform. Her voice was firm and resolute as she said, "Don't bother firing me. I quit."
