Chapter 1 A shattered reality

Why all this?" asked Sarah, looking frustrated. "You deserve to die," Kevin replied, delivering a resounding slap that sent her falling onto the bed.

"I can't take this anymore, this ends today! ," she exclaimed in frustration, her emotions giving her the strength to stand up and leave the room in a rush. Sarah went straight to the kitchen, and when she came back, she was holding a sharp knife in her hand.

Before she could fully comprehend the consequences of her actions, Sarah found herself under arrest. The police officer's stern words echoed in her ears, "Mrs. Sarah Green, you shouldn't have gone that far. It's not right to take the law into your own hands. Look what you've caused yourself."

Despite the gravity of the situation, Sarah remained unshaken. She simply shrugged and replied quietly, "I don't care what will happen to me. I know he deserved it, and I pray the Lord forgives me."

"Well, since you're not even trying to defend yourself, it looks like you're going to jail," they remarked solemnly. "Take her away," the police added, and Sarah was led away in custody. Sarah stood in the courtroom, charged with the murder of her husband, Kevin Green. The judge pronounced her sentence: six years of imprisonment.

Six years later, Sarah finally tasted freedom. "You're free to leave. Go get your belongings at the front desk and sign any necessary paperwork," the warden told her.

Released at last, Sarah couldn't shake the anger she felt, and the bitter truth settled in-she had no one waiting for her; there was no warm embrace to welcome her back into the world. As she wandered around, Sarah marveled at the changes that had occurred during her imprisonment. "Must have been a decade," she muttered, feeling disconnected from the life that had moved on without her.

Feelings of both fear and uncertainty coursed through her as she chose to revisit her old home-the place where she had endured years of torment at the hands of her husband. Despite her doubts, she decided she was going to go.

Arriving at the house, Sarah was met with a baffling sight. Her husband, the man she believed to be dead, stood before her, alive and well. Surrounding him were three beautiful children playing in the garden. Her jaw dropped, and she struggled to catch her breath. For years, she had mourned a man she thought was gone forever. But there he was, living a life she did not know of, raising a family without her. Sarah experienced a lot of emotions when faced with this revelation. She felt a combination of anger, betrayal, and heartache overwhelming her.

Amid all the emotional chaos, a tiny glimmer of hope managed to find its way into Sarah's heart. It was like a little spark, a chance for her to finally face head-on the lies and betrayal that had torn her life apart.

Sarah, a resilient and beautiful young woman, faced the harsh reality of life after losing her parents at the age of nineteen. Determined to survive, she worked tirelessly to put food on the table.

However, her striking beauty proved to be a double-edged sword, leading to challenges like finding stable employment. Many of her bosses viewed her as an object of desire, resulting in unwelcome advances or marriage proposals that distracted her from her goal.

Despite the challenges, Sarah found herself working at a cafeteria under the watchful eye of a generous woman who allowed her to use the storage room as a makeshift sleeping space. It was in this place that her path crossed with Kevin's.

From the moment he laid eyes on Sarah, Kevin was drawn to her. He pursued her relentlessly, speaking of marriage and a future together. Eventually, Sarah found herself gradually giving in, yearning for the love and stability she had lost with him.

In the beginning, Kevin showered her with affection, respect, and care, filling the void in Sarah's heart. She believed she had finally found someone who could provide the love and support she desperately needed.

One day, Sarah's heart overflowed with joy as she discovered she was going to be a mother. She had always dreamed of building a family and giving her child the best care and the thought of creating a loving family made her very excited.

But as time went on, something shifted in Kevin's behavior. The tenderness he once showed started to change, turning into possessiveness that made Sarah feel confined. She found herself gradually isolated like her world was slowly shrinking under Kevin's grip. Behind closed doors, Kevin's true colors started revealing. The man she thought was her savior became her tormentor. The emotional manipulation escalated into verbal and physical abuse, leaving Sarah feeling trapped and alone.

Tragically, due to the beatings she endured from him, Sarah lost not just one, but three pregnancies. Each loss deepened her pain and made her feel even more isolated. She felt torn between the desire for a safe and loving home for her child and the reality of the nightmare she lived every day. Sarah's life became a painful web of torment and despair, pushing her to a breaking point.

Driven by fear and desperation, she knew she had to make a life-altering decision-one that could either lead to her salvation or further entrapment in the shadows of survival.

Kevin, a tall, handsome, and charismatic man with a deep complexion, managed to walk away from the accident he cleverly staged without a scratch. But what we now understand is that his survival wasn't just luck; it was all part of his manipulative plan, taking advantage of others, especially those in power. Kevin's control extended beyond the accident itself. He had a network of connections and a high status that he used to his advantage. He pulled the strings behind the scenes, making sure all fingers pointed at Sarah.

As the investigation played out, he cunningly worked behind the scenes. He convinced the police that Sarah was solely at fault for the tragedy. He urged the authorities to bring down the heaviest possible punishment on her, ensuring she would pay for a crime she didn't commit and he also told them not to inform her he survived. His devious plan worked, and Sarah found herself facing an unjust fate. Sentenced to years of imprisonment for a crime she was innocent of.

As she watched him play with his kids, a wave of emotions washed over Sarah. Seeing Kevin, the man she once believed to be dead, living a happy life with another woman and their children, intensified the feelings of betrayal and injustice that had been simmering within her. Sarah stood in silence, a silent observer of a life she once knew intimately, now carried on without her. She felt like a forgotten echo of the past, trying to find her place in a world that had moved on. She struggled to make sense of the cruel twist of fate, It was as if fate itself had conspired to bring her back to the scene of her pain, forcing her to confront the chapters she thought were closed.

Shortly after, a woman, presumably Kevin's wife, stepped outside, heavily pregnant, and greeted him with a loving peck. Witnessing the affectionate exchange, Sarah felt a sharp pang in her heart.

Kevin, seemingly a loving husband, and father to this new family, gently rubbed the pregnant woman's stomach, his affectionate gesture fueled Sarah's pain. She couldn't help but wonder how the life she had hoped for, the family she had dreamt of, had slipped through her fingers.

As they all went back inside, Sarah felt a mix of emotions. The anger and hurt battled within her, but she also sensed a glimmer of strength. Kevin may have thought he was living happily ever after, but Sarah was back in the picture, ready to fight for justice and reclaim the life she had been robbed of.

From a distance, Sarah continued to watch Kevin and his new family, a bittersweet ache in her chest. While he reveled in the life he had deceitfully built, Sarah bore the weight of her lost dreams in silence as an invisible presence he could never suspect. Though she couldn't confront him just yet, she silently vowed that the truth would be unveiled, and she would find her path to healing.

Chapter 2 The pursuit of truth

Sarah started working in a bookstore not too far from Kevin's house. She knew Kevin had secrets, ones that could never be allowed to surface. Having shared years with him under the same roof, she understood his tendency for secrecy and his involvement in dangerous activities. As she embarked on her quest to expose him, she pondered where to begin.

Suddenly, her mind flashed back to a specific day...

"Honey, I have something for you," Kevin called out one evening as he arrived home from work. Sarah greeted him and took his briefcase, curious about the surprise.

"Take this," he said, producing a flash drive and handing it to her. "Keep it safe because once... never mind, just keep it safe, locked away somewhere," he added cryptically.

Puzzled, Sarah asked, "What's this?"

"Don't worry about that, just trust me and keep it safe," Kevin replied. "Everything I do, I do it for us."

The flash drive contained sensitive files and pieces of information detailing some of Kevin's wicked actions. Sarah agreed to keep it safe, promising to safeguard their shared future.

However, Sarah struggled to recall the exact location where she had hidden the flash drive. She eventually remembered that she had placed it under a box in her room, a place where even Kevin's new wife would never find it.

As Sarah planned her next move, the thought of entering Kevin's house consumed her mind. She knew she needed access to retrieve the flash drive and see its content but entering the house without being detected would be no easy task.

She began devising a plan to access the house discreetly. The journey to uncovering the truth had commenced, and Sarah was ready to confront the shadows of her past, one step at a time.

On this fateful morning, Sarah walked hastily to Kevin's house. When she arrived, she waited until Kevin drove off for work. Taking a moment to observe her surroundings, she noticed that his wife, Julie, was alone at home, and Kevin had already taken the kids to school.

She gave a gentle knock on the door and waited for Julie to answer. "Who is it?" Julie's voice came from the other side.

"It's just me, Sarah," she replied.

Julie opened the door, her expression curious. "Do I know you?"

"I don't believe we've met. I'm Sarah, and I'm currently looking for employment. I heard you might need a hand around the house," Sarah said, hoping her offer would catch Julie's attention.

Julie considered Sarah's proposition, "I didn't think I needed help, but now that you mention it, I could use some assistance. Juggling three kids and taking care of my husband is a lot to handle."

"May I come in?" Sarah asked.

"Of course, make yourself comfortable," Julie replied warmly, inviting Sarah into the house.

As Sarah stepped inside, she noticed the changes in the house. It was as if she had never been there before, but it looked even more beautiful than before.

"Please, take a seat," Julie offered, surprising Sarah with her openness.

"So, you're Miss Sarah, right?" Julie asked.

"Yes, that's correct," Sarah affirmed.

"Any marriage or kids in your life?" Julie inquired.

"Well, I was married once, but no children. That's a story for another day," Sarah replied, guarding her past and true identity. "My apologies, I didn't catch your name," Sarah said again.

"Oh, how rude of me. I'm Julie Green. My husband is Kevin Green, and I'm currently expecting my fourth child," Julie shared with a smile. Her friendly and cheerful behavior put Sarah at ease.

"That's good to know. I used to work at a restaurant, but I lost my job because of..." Sarah began.

"Oh my, I was cooking and completely forgot," Julie interrupted. "Please excuse me for a moment, I'll be right back."

As Julie left, Sarah saw this as an opportunity to search for the flash drive. She walked quietly to the room, despite the time that had passed, she could still identify her once-lived house.

After searching meticulously, she finally found the box. Relief washed over her as she discovered that the flash drive was still safely tucked inside.

Meanwhile, Julie had returned to the sitting room and couldn't find Sarah. She checked the guest restroom, but Sarah wasn't there either. Curious, she decided to go upstairs to her room.

As Sarah emerged from the room, she accidentally collided with Julie in the hallway.

Startled, Julie asked, "What are you doing in my room?"

Apologizing, Sarah swiftly improvised, "I'm sorry, Mrs. Green. I was looking for the restroom and got a bit turned around. My apologies if I intruded."

Julie's suspicions remained, but she responded, "It's alright. The bathroom is downstairs, the green door."

Feeling unsettled, Sarah rushed downstairs to the bathroom, pretending to have the urgent need she claimed earlier. Her heart raced as she knew she had to be cautious and avoid arousing any suspicion from Julie. Inside the bathroom, she took a moment to collect herself, grateful for the opportunity to regain her composure and strategize her next steps.

She got out a few minutes later to join Julie, who was already seated and awaiting her return.

"Do you need anything to drink?" Julie asked, raising her eyebrow.

I'm good, thanks," Sarah replied with a polite smile.

Returning to their conversation, Julie continued, "So, where were we?"

Sarah steered the discussion toward a safer territory, "I was saying that I was working at a restaurant and recently got fired."

Julie's curiosity remained evident, "Why's that?"

Sarah seized the opportunity to craft a relatable story, "Well, you know, my boss's husband asked me out, and I, being my honest self, told my boss about it. Instead of understanding, she accused me of trying to steal her husband and fired me. It's happened a lot to me; it's tiring."

Julie's gaze remained fixed on Sarah, assessing her words. She couldn't deny the striking beauty of the woman before her, but could she trust her around her husband?

After a thoughtful pause, Julie spoke, "Alright then, kindly drop your number. I might need help in the future, but for now, I can handle things."

Sarah's heart skipped a beat; her plan was falling into place. She responded with a genuine smile, "Of course, here's my number," extending a piece of paper. "Feel free to call me if you ever need assistance, Mrs. Green."

Julie collected the paper, but as she watched Sarah walk away, she couldn't shake off her suspicions. She decided not to take any chances and threw the paper away, hissing in annoyance. Heading back to the kitchen to continue her cooking, she couldn't help but wonder about the boldness of the woman who thought she could win her trust so easily.

Kevin got home later that day, his mind already consumed by the news of Sarah's release, leaving him furious. As he entered the house, Julie, his wife, decided to share her encounter with the mysterious woman who had visited earlier.

"Babe, you won't believe what happened today," Julie began.

However, Kevin, not in the mood for conversation, replied sharply, "What, babe?"

"A lady came today, offering to help me at home if I could employ her," Julie explained.

Kevin's curiosity was piqued at the mention of the lady, wondering if it could be Sarah.

Julie continued, "She was acting suspicious, especially when I caught her coming out of one of the rooms. She claimed she was looking for the restroom, but something felt off."

With each word, Kevin's anger grew. He was convinced that the woman was Sarah. "Why did she find her way here? She must know now that I'm alive, and she even approached my wife," he thought.

"Did she tell you her name?" Kevin demanded, his unease evident in his tone. "Did she leave her address?" he asked again.

"Babe, what's wrong?" Julie noticed his agitated state.

"Nothing, but how could you allow a stranger into our home?" Kevin said, his anger flaring. "What was her name? Answer me!" he insisted.

"Ehm, ehm... Sarah, I think," Julie replied uncertainly.

It dawned on Kevin that his worst nightmare had come to fruition. He was certain that Sarah was there for the flash drive. Panic washed over him as he wondered if she had obtained it.

Without a second thought, he stood up and rushed out of the house, ignoring Julie's confused expressions and desperate calls for him to stay.

In the meantime, Sarah hurriedly made her way to a nearby store, her heart pounding with anticipation and anxiety. With a humble plea, she convinced the store staff to let her use their laptop. As the flash drive slid into the laptop's port, Sarah's eyes widened in disbelief. The revelations that unfolded before her were nothing short of staggering. She had suspected Kevin's involvement in something ominous, but the extent of it left her dumbfounded. The contents of the flash drive revealed shocking truths and sinister secrets. She realized that her fight wasn't just about proving her innocence for the crime she didn't commit, but it involved something far more dangerous.

Realizing the sensitive nature of the information on the flash drive, she carefully deleted any traces of it from the laptop at the store, leaving no room for evidence. Thanking the store owner, Sarah left and quickly headed to the nearest electronics store to purchase a laptop of her own.

After she acquired the laptop, she stored the crucial information on it and decided to entrust it to her boss, Mya. Mya was a young woman who had experienced an early marriage, running a bookstore with her husband before their divorce. Sarah knew she could trust Mya to keep the laptop safe.

"Please, Mya, can you help me keep this laptop?" Sarah urgently requested. "I'll be back, but please keep it safe," she added, not revealing the gravity of the situation. Oblivious to the seriousness, Mya agreed to help, though she wondered why Sarah had to visit her so late in the night.

"Sure thing. Is that why you came over to my house this late?" Mya asked, curious but unaware of the dangerous game Sarah was involved in.

"I'm sorry. See you tomorrow at work," Sarah hurriedly replied, making her way out of Mya's place and rushing back to her dwelling.

As she left, Mya couldn't help but find the situation a bit peculiar. "Weirdo," she mumbled playfully, closing the door behind her. Unaware of the imminent danger that lurked within the secrets held in the laptop.

Kevin went straight to his guys, the ones he used for his dark and illicit activities. "You remember the lady I was married to before, right guys?" he asked, his face contorted with anger and frustration.

Three hefty men responded in unison, "Yes, boss."

"Find her," he commanded, his voice sounded cold and commanding. "No questions asked," he added, emphasizing the urgency of the task.

The men understood the severity of their boss's order and wasted no time, swiftly setting out to carry out their mission. Meanwhile, Kevin drove back home, his emotions in turmoil. He couldn't shake off the thought of Sarah's unexpected return, and he blamed the police for not informing him earlier.

While driving, almost reaching his residence, he saw someone who bore a striking resemblance to Sarah trying to enter the bookstore, which was close to his house. His heart pounded, and his eyes widened as he tried to confirm if it was indeed her. Seeing her brought forth a jumble of emotions within him-anger, fear, and an unsettling satisfaction.

Without a second thought, He jumped out of the car, quickly closing the gap between them, driven by a dangerous mix of anger and his twisted desire to control. His fingers closed around her hair in a painful grip, catching her off guard, and Sarah found herself in his clutches, her heart pounding in fear.

"Hi, baby, welcome back," he said, his voice dripping with false affection and a twisted smile on his face. His words and expression sent a chill down Sarah's spine, reminding her of the dark and scary side he hid behind his fake charm.

Chapter 3 Sinking shadows

Kevin, stop! You're hurting me," Sarah pleaded while being forcefully tugged by her hair.

"Shut up and hand over the drive," Kevin demanded sharply.

"What drive?" Sarah feigned ignorance.

"Don't think I don't know that's what you came to my house to take. Do you think I'm a fool?" Kevin erupted with fury.

"So, you were never really gone?" Tears streamed down Sarah's face as she uttered her disbelief. "I don't know what I did to deserve this. I loved you."

"Zip it! Shut your damn mouth!" he yelled while forcibly guiding her towards his vehicle and eventually shoving her into the trunk. Swiftly getting behind the wheel, he sped away without hesitation. He drove into a bush and dragged her out of the car.

"Where are we?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling.

"I don't know, and I don't care. Don't question me, and give me the fucking drive!" he shouted, now very angry.

"I won't give it. I know everything, I mean everything, you piece of shit," Sarah said defiantly.

"We'll see about that," Kevin sneered, gripping her hand tightly. She managed to kick him, causing him to stumble, but he quickly regained his balance and chased her deep into the bushes.

Tears streamed down her face as she ran desperately, her heart pounding, until she reached the edge of a cliff. Kevin, sensing her predicament, wore a wicked grin. "Hand me the drive," he demanded once more.

"Okay, okay, but please don't kill me. I don't want to die, please," she begged.

She fumbled in her pocket and retrieved the drive. Kevin smirked as he took it from her trembling hand. "There you go," she said, her voice shaking.

"Aw, thanks, baby," he said mockingly before callously shoving her off the cliff.

We should name the child Sam, don't you think?" asked Kevin, his face beaming with happiness as he sat with his family. It was a joyous moment, and one would never suspect that he had just committed a murder. Kevin was overjoyed that Sarah, his nemesis, was now out of the way. He believed that he had successfully destroyed the flash drive, and nothing could link him to the heinous act anymore. Or so he thought.

Little did Kevin know that the contents of the flash drive is still out there. The evidence it held was a ticking time bomb, a potential catalyst for bringing his world crashing down.

Years back, the company where Kevin had once worked erupted into a massive fireball. The building was mysteriously empty at the time, and to everyone's horror, news spread like wildfire that the CEO and his entire family had been brutally murdered during a home invasion on that very night. As the chaos of the burning company unfolded, it became evident that the perpetrators had meticulously orchestrated the entire scheme. To make matters worse, the company's accounts were discovered to be empty, and crucial files and documents had vanished without a trace.

The city was gripped with fear and confusion, and rumors swirled throughout every corner. The police and detectives worked tirelessly to piece together the puzzle, but the truth remained elusive. Little did they know that Kevin and his accomplices had carefully planned and carried out the scheme. They had cunningly manipulated their boss into signing seemingly harmless papers, unknowingly sealing his deadly fate.

The following day, Sarah stumbled upon a file with the CEO's name in Kevin's possession. She questioned him about it, but he swiftly dismissed her with a violent outburst, berating her for meddling in his affairs. Despite her instincts, Sarah couldn't put her finger on the connection between Kevin and the tragic incident.

That was the day the killing happened, and it was also the day Sarah was arrested, which eventually led to the events that brought us to this day.

As the investigation continued, Kevin decided to stay in town, carefully staging his actions to avoid suspicion. He manipulated the narrative, acting as a concerned citizen while secretly reveling in the chaos he had sown. For a year, he discreetly built a new identity for himself, starting his own company using the stolen mandate. His newfound business ventures brought unimaginable wealth, catapulting him to become the third richest person in the city.

Kevin's arrogance and greed knew no bounds, and he couldn't resist tightening his grip on the stolen fortune. He sent his hired men to eliminate the two former colleagues who had helped him execute the sinister plan. He wanted it all to himself, no matter the cost. This was Kevin's secret.

Julie, on the other hand, never bothered asking about her husband's story; she was just happy to have married a wealthy man, and at a young age too. Julie gave birth to a baby boy and named him Kendal. Kevin's joy knew no bounds, and he believed everything was finally coming up for him.

A few years later, Kevin's new enemy emerged. A lady called Annie Victor. Over the years, Kevin had been trying to surpass the rest and become the richest, and while he managed to climb to the second position, he couldn't claim the top spot.

Luckily for him, the man who held the first position passed away, but he willed all his wealth to his daughter. It was rumored that the daughter had gone missing, but suddenly they announced that she had been found after many years.

Kevin couldn't care less, as he believed taking down a lady would be a piece of cake.

"Annie, this is the file you asked for," her secretary said, placing a folder on her desk.

Annie thanked her and asked her to leave. She stood up from her chair and walked to the window. A smile spread across her face as she looked out, and then she went back to her seat.

Annie sent a business partner request to Kevin, and he couldn't help but wonder why she would make such a move. Nonetheless, he accepted the request, thinking it would provide him with an opportunity to get closer and bring her down.

As business partners, Annie and Kevin were supposed to have regular meetings, but to Kevin's frustration, Annie missed every single one of them. Instead, she would send her secretary and personal assistant to represent her. Each time, they would come up with excuses for Annie's absence, claiming that her father's recent passing had left her dealing with some rough patches.

Despite the explanations, Kevin couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right. He became increasingly obsessed with meeting Annie in person, as he believed it was the key to understanding her and finding the leverage he needed to take her down.

One day, when the secretary and assistant arrived for yet another meeting without Annie, Kevin decided he had had enough. "I've been patient for far too long," he thought. He confronted them sternly, demanding to know why Annie continuously avoided meeting him.

The secretary looked hesitant, glancing at the assistant before finally speaking. "Mr. Green, Annie is going through some personal difficulties after her father's death. She's not in the right state to handle business matters at the moment."

Kevin's eyes narrowed, not entirely convinced. "I understand her loss, but this is a professional partnership. We need to discuss important matters face-to-face. I won't accept this any longer."

The assistant interjected, trying to appease Kevin. "Please understand, Mr. Green. Annie values this partnership, but she's just not emotionally ready to engage in direct meetings. She has been focusing on the business decisions, though, and she trusts us to represent her interests."

Kevin took a deep breath, trying to compose himself. He knew he needed to tread carefully if he wanted things to work out. "Alright, but tell her I expect a video conference at the very least. I won't settle for anything less."

The secretary and assistant nodded, assuring Kevin they would pass along the message. As they left, Kevin felt anger. He had a gut feeling that there was more to Annie than met the eye, and he was determined to find out what it was. The more she evaded him, the more he became intrigued, and he knew he had to be patient and strategic in his approach.

From that moment on, Kevin's obsession with meeting Annie grew stronger. He knew that face-to-face interaction was crucial to understanding her intentions and finding the information he needed to bring her down.

Julie, Kevin's wife, strolled on this fateful day, her arms cradling her baby boy. She had just parked her car and was approaching the bustling mall when she spotted a woman coming out. It was Annie.

Julie noticed Annie looking at her and decided to approach her. "Hi," she greeted with a warm smile. "Do I know you?" Julie asked, trying to recall if they had ever met before.

"You might not know me, but I know you," Annie replied, still smiling. "Aren't you Mr. Green's wife?"

"Yes, I am Julie Green," she answered back, feeling a bit flattered that someone recognized her. "And you are?"

"I'm Annie Victor, Mr. Green's business associate and partner," Annie said, extending her hand for a friendly handshake.

"I've heard about you. Nice to finally meet you. I'm sorry about your father, by the way."

Annie nodded gratefully. "Thank you, and your baby is so cute," Annie remarked, glancing at the adorable baby boy in Julie's arms. "Just wanted to say hi and give you my card. We could be friends, and you can call me anytime."

Julie happily accepted the card, feeling excited about making a new friend, especially one who seemed to have a close connection to her husband's business. As they bid each other farewell, Julie couldn't wait to share the news with Kevin when she got home.

"Guess who I ran into at the mall today," Julie exclaimed as she walked into the living room, where Kevin was engrossed in watching TV. Kevin looked up, his interest piqued. "Who?" he asked, trying not to sound too interested.

"It's Annie Victor, your business partner," Julie said, hoping to catch his attention. However, instead of showing enthusiasm or interest, Kevin's face seemed to darken, and he turned back to the TV without saying a word.

Ignoring his cold reaction, Julie continued, "She was nice and gave me her card. She said we could be friends."

Kevin grunted in response, still not looking at her. Julie couldn't help but feel a bit hurt by his indifference. She had wanted to share her excitement with him, but he seemed uninterested.

"Anyway, I'm going to put the baby down for a nap," Julie said, taking the baby and heading upstairs. As she placed the baby in the crib, she wondered why Kevin had reacted that way. She had hoped that making a new friend would be a positive thing, but it seemed to have the opposite effect on her husband.
