Chapter 1 Whispers in the Woods

I stood in the middle of my grandmother's antique shop, dusting off the glass case filled with relics from an ancient time. The room smelled vaguely of cedar and lavender, the scent my grandmother had used for years to hide the fusty aroma that was stuck to the old trinkets.

I glanced at the clock above the counter- 5:50 p.m., and the sun had already started to descend behind the trees with a slow descent. Even though there were no clouds in the sky, the air felt heavier today, like it was starting a storm.

I exhaled, dropping the cloth back on the counter. It had been one of those quiet days in Ashwood, where nothing happened, and nothing ever seemed to change. I was very comfortable with that. I liked my peace and quiet.

After losing my parents when I was younger, I found comfort in being alone. My grandmother, Maria, raised me but lately her presence seemed distant, as if there's an unspoken rift between us.

I shook my head as the bell above the door jingled. I looked up, expecting the usual local passersby, but instead, I saw a stranger entering the shop. The man was tall and broad-shouldered, and his dark hair caught the evening light. His sharp, almost unsettling gray eyes swept the room before landing on me. There was something about him, like an aura of authority lingered around him, which made me straighten my back immediately.

"Hello, can I help you?" I asked with a firm but curious voice.

He smiled, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "I was just passing by. I thought I'd take a look around."

I nodded, watching him closely as he walked around the shop.

He proceeded with purpose, inspecting objects without touching them, as if he had already figured out what he was seeking. Though I couldn't say why, his presence made me anxious. Although he seemed harmless, there was something about him- an energy that I couldn't quite identify.

"You're new in town?" I asked after some minutes.

He looked at me, wondering why I asked. " Yeah... yes I am. I just arrived today."

"Where from?"

He paused for a moment before answering, as if he was selecting his words oddly. "Just a few towns over. I've heard a lot about Ashwood. Thought I'd see what all the fuss was about."

I made a face. "Fuss? There's basically nothing here at all unless of course you're interested in werewolf stories and ghost tales as well."

He laughed, and it was deep enough that I felt a shudder run down my body. "Perhaps that is what I am exactly interested in."

My internal monologue was interrupted by his response. Most of the people going to Ashwood had at least some idle curiosity in its history, but none of them ever sounded as... informed as he did.

I folded my arms and settled on the counter. "Do you really buy into those fables?"

He shrugged. "Legends usually have some truth to them, right?"

Just as I was about to respond, the bell above the door jingled once more. This time my throat dried up. Another man walked in, nearly displacing the air in the way. This man was different- tall but a little more slender than the first man, and a mass of dark hair that brushed just above his eyes. His eyes met mine, and for a second, it felt like the world tilted off-hand.

He was good looking, very much so, but there was more to it. His eyes-dark and powerful-carried an extra edge. Something risky.

"Pardon me," he said, smooth and rich. "Am I interrupting?"

I took a deep breath, pulling myself together. "No, not at all. Just... looking around?"

He gave a slight smile, but there was something guarded in his expression. "You could say it that way."

The two men shared a glance that left me perplexed. The air between them crackled with tension, as though they were having wordless dialogue that I couldn't understand. I wasn't sure if they were friends or rivals, but the unsureness made me uneasy.

"Alright..." I said, trying to ease the atmosphere, "are you both here for the werewolf legends, or does one of you have a more particular agenda?"

The first man, with the unsettling gray eyes, stared at me with a blank look. "Let's just say we have a common interest."

My heart raced. This whole situation just felt wrong. I could feel it deep inside of me. Something was going on in Ashwood, something much bigger than my grandmother's antique shop or the legends people talk about.

Before I could ask further questions, the second man moved forward.

"I'm Asher fell," he introduced himself, extending his hand. His handshake was strong and warm. "And you must be Bonnie."

My eyebrows raised in shock. "How do you know my name?"

His smile dimmed a bit, but he kept going. "It's a small town. Word gets around."

"Okay," I said slowly, feeling more doubtful. He seemed familiar, but I just couldn't figure out why. The way he said my name made it seem like he had known me for years.

Asher looked around the shop and noticed a small, ornate box in the corner. "That's a unique item," he said, pointing at it. "Where did you find it?"

I directed my attention to where he was looking. The box in question was among my grandmother's most cherished possessions, a family heirloom that had been handed down through generations. I hesitated, uncertain about the reason for his inquiry.

"It's been in my family. Why do you ask?"

He remained silent, yet the seriousness of his expression deepened. The ambiance in the room grew increasingly oppressive, as though an unseen weight was bearing down upon them. The first man who still hadn't introduced himself, observed Asher with an expectant look, as if anticipating a moment to unfold.

Asher leaned in, his gaze intense as he spoke softly, "Bonnie there's something important you need to know."

My heart raced. "What do you mean?"

He moved a fraction closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "You're not just an ordinary person, Bonnie. You hold significance-more than you realize. There are people who are searching for you."

A chill swept through me . "What do you mean, 'people searching for me'? Why? Why would they do that?"

He paused, looking at the other man before he pressed on. "It's because you're more than just human."

My heart sank at his words. I looked at him, confused. "I don't understand. What do you mean?"

The man with the unsettling gray eyes finally chimed in. "You know the stories, right? About werewolves?"

"Absolutely," I replied, my voice trembling. "But they are merely tales."

"Not entirely," Asher replied gently.

I took a step back, shaking my head. "This is crazy. You both are crazy."

"We aren't," Asher replied, his tone steady yet resolute.

"And soon, you'll discover just how true those tales really are."

Before I could reply, a deafening crash resonated from outside the shop. I flinched, my heart racing wildly. The two men instantly stiffened, their faces clouded with concern.

"What was that?" I murmured.

Asher's face sharpened. "Stay inside."

He moved toward the door, but just as he got close, the front window exploded. Glass shards flew everywhere, and I let out a terrified scream as a huge figure crashed through the opening, landing in a crouched position on the shop floor. The creature was massive, with dark, mottled gray fur and glowing, menacing eyes.

A werewolf.

My mind struggled to understand the chaos happening around me. The beast snarled, showing its sharp teeth, and charged at me. Just as it was about to strike, Asher darted in with incredible speed, slamming into the creature and sending it crashing across the room.

"Bonnie!" he shouted. "Run!"

Frozen in fear, I stood still, my eyes wide with terror as I watched the two men undergo a shocking change right in front of me. Asher's body shimmered, his bones shifting and rearranging, while fur erupted from his skin, transforming him into a massive black wolf. The other man changed too, his look just as terrifying, but his unsettling gray eyes stayed the same.

I gasped for air, my heart racing. This couldn't be real. None of it made sense. Yet the sight of the two wolves clashing in my grandmother's shop was undeniable.

I needed to escape. I had to flee.

But, just as I was about to take a step, the black wolf-Asher-met my gaze, and in that brief hour, I understood. This wasn't the end. It was just the beginning.

And whatever danger Asher was shielding me from, it was only the beginning of something far more threatening.

The earth quaked beneath me, and a haunting howl resonated in the distance, a grim reminder that the threat was far from finished.

Chapter 2 The Awakening

I felt as if my legs were weighed down by lead. My chest rose and fell rapidly, yet no sound left my lips. The wolves-one as dark as the night sky, the other a foggy gray-crashed into each other again, their growls ringing out in the shop. The air was heavy with the smells of dirt, blood, and a sharp metallic scent that made me shiver. Broken glass glittered on the floor, reflecting the chairs happening right before me.

The air was heavy with the smells of dirt, blood, and a sharp metallic scent that made me shiver. Broken glass glittered on the floor, reflecting the chaos happening before me.

I had to escape. Asher had urged me to flee.

But my feet remained frozen. It was as if an invisible force had anchored me in place. I could only watch as the gray wolf-a behemoth, nearly too big for the space-threw Asher against a bookshelf, causing books and relics to tumble to the ground. Asher growled, quickly regaining his stance. His dark fur stool on end as he circled the beast, moving with a deadly elegance.

My thoughts were racing. Werewolves were real. Everything was real. And these two men-if they could be called that-were not just random people. They were ancient and powerful beings. They had brought their conflict right to my home.

The gray lunged at me again, and this time, Asher bare manger to stop it. Their bodies collided, crashing into the counter and splitting it in two. I stumbled back, my hand gripping the edge of the shattered case. My fingers were cut by the sharp glass, but I hardly felt the pain. I was cornered. There was no escape.

Then, the door at the back of the shop burst open. My grandmother, Maria-small, fragile, yet incredibly calm-stood in the doorway, her face pale but her eyes sharp.

"Bonnie!" Maria called out, her voice strong and commanding. "Get behind me. Now."

I acted quickly this time. I hurried to Maria, and she held me tightly with her delicate arms. But instead of feeling the usual comfort and security, I felt that something was off. It felt cold. I looked up, my mind filled with confusion.

"What's happening?" I asked, my voice shaking. "Who are they? Who are you?"

Maria paused before answering, her gaze locked on the fight unfolding before us. The gray wolf had cornered Asher, its teeth dangerously close to his neck.

"This isn't the right moment." Maria said quietly. "But you need to understand something, Bon Bon. I've hidden things from you. Things about your history. Things about your true identity."

I blinked, trying to grasp what was going on around me. "What do you mean by that?"

Maria's grip became firmer. "You're not just any girl, Bon Bon. You came from a lineage that predates this town and its stories. You're the last of the Blackwood family. And that means..." She paused, her voice thick with emotion. "It means you're in more danger than you realize."

A loud roar echoed in the room, pulling my focus back to the wolves. Asher, Injured with a deep wound in his side, was struggling to defend himself. The gray wolf attacked fiercely, its eyes shining with a dark hunger. My heart raced, fear tightening around my chest.

"Asher..." I whispered, my voice shaking.

Maria's hand gripped my arm, pulling me toward the back door. "We have to go," she said with determination. "Right now, before it's too late."

I fought against it, my gaze fixed to Asher. "We can't just abandon him!"

"He's tougher than he seems," Maria replied, but urgency laced her words, revealing her doubt. "If we stay, you'll die. Do you get that?"

I paused for a moment longer before agreeing with a nod. We dashed through the back of the shop, the sound of claws scraping against wood and terrifying growls following them.

We stepped into the cold night, and I shivered as the biting wind hit my face. The narrow alley behind the store felt like another world-calm and almost serene, even with the turmoil nearby. My heart raced as my grandmother, Maria, guided me deeper into the shadows.

"We are not safe here," Maria said firmly.

"More are coming. Thane's pack won't stop until they get what they want."

My thoughts raced. Thane. That name again. Who is he? And why am I a target?

Maria faced me , and the intensity in her eyes made me uneasy. "Pay attention. There are things you don't know, things I couldn't share. But you must grasp this: you're more significant than you realize. Your bloodline holds the key to everything."

My voice trembled as I asked, "What do you mean? What am I?"

Maria glanced back, her eyes searching the shadowy streets as if waiting for someone-or something. "You're a Blackwood," she replied softly.

"The last descendant of the original werewolf line. This means... there's a power within you, Bon Bon. A power you haven't started to grasp yet."

I stared in disbelief, struggling to absorb the information. Me? A werewolf? How? It seemed impossible. I had always been a regular human. I wasn't like Asher or the others. I couldn't be.

"I don't get it," I murmured. "I'm just... me."

Maria's face relaxed for a brief moment. "I understand. I wanted to shield you from this, but we don't have time to prepare you. Thane knows who you are now, and he will do anything to take what belongs to you."

I felt a knot in my stomach. "What does he want?"

Maria's face grew serious. "Power. Control. The Blackwood line holds the secret to leading the packs. With you, Thane could become invincible."

Suddenly, we heard a noise from the alley behind us. I felt a chill run through me, Maria's gaze shot to the sound, her body tensing up.

"Run," she whispered urgently, her voice filled with fear.

My legs froze for a moment, but Maria pushed me forward, and finally I moved. I ran fast through the alley, my heart pounding. I didn't know where to head-just that I needed to get away and keep moving. Maria's footsteps were right behind me, but then there was a loud crash and gasp of pain.

I halted and turned around. "Grandma?"

Maria was on the ground, trying to get up. A dark figure towered over her, and I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach. A man stepped from the shadows, tall and threatening, with eyes that glowed sickly yellow.

Thane.

He appeared just as the tales had portrayed him-strong, merciless, his presence darkening the alley like a storm. A sly smile spread across his face as he looked down at Maria.

"Interesting," he said, his voice smooth and threatening. "The old witch has shown up. I was curious how long you would survive."

I felt my throat tighten. "Leave her be."

Thane's eyes shifted to me, and his grin grew. "Ah, the Blackwood heir. I've been anticipating this moment for quite a while."

My hands shook, but I moved closer, trying to find the courage within me. "I don't know what you want, but I won't go with you."

Thane laughed, a sound that made me shiver. "Oh you will. You don't realize it yet, but your fate is already decided, little wolf. There's no escaping it."

Before I could reply, a deep growl came from behind me. I turned quickly to see Asher-still in wolf form, wounded but resilient-stepping out of the shadows. His gaze was fixed on Thane, and the air in the alley felt heavy with tension.

"Stay away from her," Asher growled, his voice rough but clear.

Thane tilted his head, a smirk playing on his lips. "Ah the Alpha heir. I should have expected you. But you're too late, Asher. The girl belongs to me."

Asher showed his teeth. "Not while I'm alive."

Thane's smile became sinister. "I can make that happen."

In an instant that froze my heart, Thane charged forward.

Just as I was about to respond, a brilliant light burst from the ground, creating a sound that shook everything around. I cried out as the impact sent me flying back, and as the shadows surrounded me, a wave of fear hit me-this was just the start.

Chapter 3 Beneath the Surface

I jolted awake, my heart racing. Everything around me was a swirl of soft colors and faint sounds, as if I was stuck in a dream. A pounding headache made it hard to think, and when I attempted to sit up, a sharp pain shot through my side.

I blinked a few times, my sight gradually clearing. The room was new to me-spacious and dim, full ones with the smell of woods and herbs. Old bolds lined the walls, and strange symbols were carved into the stone. A fire crackled in the corner, casting dancing shadows.

"Where... am I?" I murmured, my throat dry.

"You're safe."

The deep, soothing voice caught me off guard. I quickly turned my head and noticed Asher seated in a chair close to the fire, his face fixed on me, revealing a blend of relief and concern. His dark hair was messy, and while he appeared to have a endured a lot, he still exudes that quiet strength I had gone to recognize in him.

"Asher," I gasped, attempting to grasp the situation. "What happened? Where's my grandma?"

Asher's demeanor grew serious as he stood and moved across the room to kneel before me. "You're in the safe house, deep within Lunar territory. After Thane's attack, I brought you here. You.. you were out cold for a while. I wasn't certain you would wake up." His voice softened with the last words, revealing a vulnerability I have never heard from him.

I felt my heart drop as his words sank in. "But my grandma-"

"She's safe," Asher quickly reassured me, but there was a pause in his tone that made me feel uneasy. "She was injured, but Julian got her out. She's being looked after."

I exhaled a breath I didn't realize I was holding, but my relief was fleeting. My thoughts raced back to the alley-the blinding light, Thane attacking Asher, the surge of raw power I felt. I shivered without meaning to.

"What was that?" I asked, my voice trembling. "The light... that power... it came from me, didn't it?"

Asher took a moment before responding. He stood and faced the fire, his shoulders tight. "Yes," he finally said, his voice quiet. "It came from you."

A wave of nausea hit me. I had suspected it, but hearing it made it all feel real and frightening. I had no clue what was happening to me or why.

"I don't get it," I said softly. "I can't control it. I don't even know what it is."

Asher looked at me, his expression serious. "That's why you're here. There are people in my pack who can assist you. You're not just any werewolf. Bonnie. You're special. Thane is aware of that."

I felt a lump in my throat. "What does he want from me?"

Asher tightened his jaw. "Your power. Your bloodline. The Blackwood family has a magic linked to the core of the werewolf packs. If Thane captures you... he could harness that power to bring all the packs under his rule. He would be unstoppable."

My stomach churned. "But I don't want any of this," I replied, my voice trembling. "I don't want to be a part of a war. I just want my normal life back."

Asher's expression softened as he knelt down in front of me once more. "I understand," he said softly. "But this is more than just us. You can't escape who you are, Bonnie. Not anymore."

I bit my lip, tryin to hold back tears. "What if I can't manage it? What if I end up being a threat to everyone around me?"

Asher placed his hands gently on mine. "Then I'll be here to support you," he replied, his tone steady. "You're not in this alone. Not anymore."

I looked into his eyes, for a brief moment, my fear and confusion faded, replaced by an unexpected sense of peace. Asher is right. I can't run away from this. I can't hide. But I don't have to confront it by myself.

Before I could respond, the door creaked open, and Julian walked in. His usual air of mystery felt even stronger as he moved across the room, glancing between Asher and I.

Julian noted, "She's awake," his voice calm but tense. "That's good. We have to leave."

I looked confused. "Leave? Where to?"

Julian exchanged a look with Asher, then focused back on me. "This place isn't safe. Thane's pack is moving. They'll find you soon, even here."

Asher's face grew serious. "How close are they?"

"Closer than I want," Julian said, his voice heavy.

"They have been checking the edges of our land. It won't be long before they catch her scent."

I felt my heart race. "What should we do?"

Julian's gaze fixed on me, revealing a side of him I had never seen before-something darker and more threatening. "We take the initiative," he said in a chilling tone. "We attack first, before they can reach you."

Asher tensed up. "Julian-"

Julian interrupted him. "This is war, Asher. You understand what's at stake. We can't wait for Thane to act. Not with her abilities on the line."

I felt uneasy at how he referred to "my abilities," as if I was just a tool. I wanted to argue, but Asher spoke up first.

"We're not using Bonnie as bait," Asher said fiercely, standing tall. "She's not just a piece in this game."

Julian lifted an eyebrow. "I didn't claim she was. But we can't overlook that Thane is pursuing her for a reason. We need to be cautious about this."

Asher's hands tightened into fists, but he held back from arguing. He then looked at me, his expression softening once more. "You don't have to leave if you don't want to," he said gently. "I'll protect you here. We'll sort this out together."

My thoughts raced. Part of me wanted to stay out of sight, to let Asher shield me from the dangers outside. But another part-the part that has always valued my independence, the part that wouldn't let fear dictate my actions-knew I couldn't remain passive forever.

"No." I said, surprising myself with my determination. "I need to know what's going on. I need to understand this... power. And if that means confronting Thane, then I won't hide."

Asher stared at me for a long time before he nodded. "Okay," he said quietly. "But we do this our way, not his."

Julian smiled with satisfaction. "Great. It's decided then. We will leave at night."

I inhaled deeply, trying to calm my shaking hands. I had no clue what was ahead, but one thing was clear-I couldn't return to my old life. Not now. Not ever.

As the minutes passed, the three of us got ready in silence, collecting supplies and weapons. The atmosphere was heavy with tension, and I felt the pressure of what was coming, like a storm ready to unleash.

Night came quickly, and as we walked through the thick forest around Lunar territory, everything felt strangely quiet. Every sound, like leaves rustling or twigs snapping, made my heart race. I sensed danger lurking just out of sight.

"Stay close," Asher said softly, his eyes searching the dark. "We're nearly at the border."

Julian moved ahead, barely visible in the moonlight, but I could feel his tension. He seemed more anxious than usual. Something was off.

Then, a deep growl echoed through the trees, making us freeze. I held my breath as a pair of glowing eyes appeared in the shadows ahead.

"Thane is here," Julian whispered, his voice strained. "We're too late."

Before I had the chance to reply, the ground trembled beneath us, accompanied by a resounding crack that reverberated through the atmosphere. The earth quaked, and I experienced a surge of potent energy coursing through my body, overwhelming my senses. The same terrifying force I had previously encountered erupted within me once more, wild and uncontrollable.

"Asher!" I shouted, but my voice was drowned out by the tumult of the forest collapsing around us.

In the midst of the chaos created by the falling earth and flickering energy, I was yanked away from Asher, descending into the darkness below. The last thing I saw before everything went dark was Thane's glowing eyes fixed on me, a twisted grin on his face.
