Chapter 1 As Fate Would Have It

Squinting, Thalia Palmer staggered down the dimly lit corridor of a private club.

The alcohol was beginning to take a hold on her, and her vision became somewhat hazy.

She rubbed her temples in a daze, squinting at the room number on the door in front of her.

"Was it Room 906... or 909?" she muttered to herself.

Before she could figure it out, the door in front of her suddenly swung open from the inside. The next moment, somebody grabbed her by the wrist.

In the blink of an eye, Thalia was dragged out of the hallway and into the private room.

The room, however, was pitch black.

"Ah!" Thalia instinctively let out a scream and tried her best to struggle, but it was futile. The man in front of her had wrapped his strong arms around her waist.

Before she knew it, she was thrown onto the bed.

"Help me, and I'll compensate you."

The man's voice was low and deep, his stature tall and imposing. After making this "offer", he climbed on top of Thalia, pinning her against the bed.

Thalia could feel the scorching heat emanating from the man, and even in her drunken state, she could tell that he had been drugged.

She struggled and pushed, finding it hard to form words. "I... I'll help you-"

She was going to say that she'd help him find a doctor, but the man misinterpreted this as her consent. He abandoned all restraint and sealed Thalia's lips with his.

He kissed her passionately, drowning out her voice, leaving only soft whimpers that echoed in the vast room.

--

The following morning, Thalia rubbed her throbbing temples and slowly peeled her eyes open.

Her entire body ached, and her mind was still hazy from last night.

Thalia was a married woman, but her husband had ignored her existence for two whole years. She had always seen his name on gossip news headlines, and finally, she couldn't take it anymore and asked for a divorce last night.

Initially, she had plans to celebrate her divorce with her best friend, but halfway through their celebration, her friend suddenly had to leave because of a work emergency. So, Thalia ended up drinking alone into the late hours of the night. Later, after going to the restroom, she tried to find her way back to their private room when she was suddenly...

The sound of the man's heavy breathing came to her ears, which snapped her back to reality.

Clutching the blanket to her chest, she sat up in bed and looked at the man who had taken her virginity last night.

The moment she saw the man's face, all the color drained from her face.

The man lying in bed next to her was incredibly handsome. Even in his sleep, there was a hint of darkness and danger about him; he had the kind of presence that inspired awe and fear.

But what truly shocked Thalia wasn't the man's astonishing good looks, but the fact that the man was none other than her husband from whom she had filed for divorce just the night before-Brayan Rogers!

"How can it be him?" Thalia murmured, eyes wide in disbelief.

They were bound by a marriage arranged by their families, but Brayan had never fully accepted this. He had even refused to lay eyes on her in the two years that they were married.

Thalia struggled in this loveless marriage, and in the end, she couldn't take it. As fate would have it, she ended up in bed with her soon-to-be ex-husband the night after requesting a divorce.

Thalia couldn't believe this incredible twist of fate, but she had no time to ponder over it.

She took a deep breath, forced herself to calm down, and realized that Brayan had never seen her face all throughout their marriage. He probably had no clue that the woman he had slept with was none other than his wife.

Careful not to wake Brayan up, Thalia slipped out of bed, quickly got dressed, and hurriedly left.

As she disappeared around the corner at the far end of the hallway, the door of the opposite private room swung open.

Sabina Lloyd, who had just gotten out of someone's bed, emerged from the room, her body covered in hickeys and her hair a disheveled mess.

Sabina was a B-list actress, and in order to secure the lead role in an upcoming television drama, she had spent the night with its director.

She had seen a woman hastily leaving the room across hers just now. Upon seeing the sparkling golden letters "VIP" next to the room number, curiosity got the best of her.

"Whoever can get a VIP room here is either super rich or super powerful. Most people can only dream of getting close to these big shots, so why was that woman so scared just now?"

Sabina was brimming with curiosity. Unable to resist the temptation, she pushed open the room's door, which Thalia had left partially ajar, to sneak a peek inside.

When she saw the still-sleeping man and a small bloodstain on the bed sheet, her eyes lit up excitedly.

"Brayan Rogers? Oh, my God! It's actually him! It's the CEO of the Rogers Group!"

Sabina couldn't believe her luck. Her golden opportunity had finally arrived!

If she could date a man as powerful as Brayan, she could get anything she wanted!

The mere thought overwhelmed her, and she couldn't wait. She quickly stripped all her clothing and climbed into bed next to Brayan.

To make it all the more convincing, Sabina hid her excitement and began to sob softly, as though she was a victim who had just been taken advantage of.

The man in the bed was awakened by the sound of her crying.

He gradually opened his eyes, gazing at Sabina, and within his deep, piercing eyes, a sense of danger loomed.

Chapter 2 I'll Help You Sober Up

When Sabina's eyes met Brayan's intense gaze, a surge of nervousness washed over her. However, she managed to keep up a facade of simulated panic and croaked, "You... Just forget what happened last night."

After saying this, Sabina hastily picked up her dress from the floor and clumsily put it on, pretending to be hasty to leave.

But as soon as she got out of bed, Brayan grabbed her by the arm and said gruffly, "Wait."

He cleared his throat and asked in a low voice, "You saved me last night?"

Sabina breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed that she had guessed correctly. Brayan didn't know who he had slept with last night.

So, Sabina looked up at him innocently and nodded. Sniffling pitifully, she whispered, "Yes..."

Brayan furrowed his brows. Last night, his business rivals had set him up, and that was how this situation came about. But regardless of the circumstances, he felt that he had to make it up to the woman involved.

He let go of Sabina's arm and said, "Since you saved me, I'll compensate you accordingly."

Sabina knew that a big shot like Brayan must've met all kinds of women, so she needed to leave a good impression on him.

She suppressed her excitement and put on her most pitiful expression. Tears glistening in her eyes, she pretended to decline his offer. "No need, I didn't do it for the compensation."

Brayan narrowed his eyes at the woman before him. Then, he glanced at the glaring red stain on the bed, which instantly pricked his cold heart with guilt.

"I promised to compensate you, and I intend to keep my word," he asserted firmly.

--

The following morning, Thalia woke up and stretched her arms.

Out of habit, she grabbed her phone to check the time, but her attention was immediately captured by the trending news alerts on her screen.

"The Rogers Group Splurges Millions on New Rising Star, Sabina, Elevating Her to Stardom Overnight!"

"From a B-list Actress to an A-Lister Overnight: Uncovering the Secrets of the Entertainment Industry and the Wealthy."

Thalia had grown accustomed to seeing Brayan's name on the gossip media outlets, but she had never seen him so generous before. She couldn't help but mutter sarcastically, "Seems like he's found true love."

Sneering, she tossed her phone aside and got out of bed.

An hour later, Thalia pulled into the company's parking lot.

After parking her car, she headed straight for the elevator. By the time she arrived, the doors were still open. When she was about to enter, she looked up to find an incredibly handsome and tall man inside.

Brayan?

What was he doing here?

Thalia involuntarily gasped as the memories of the passionate night they had shared suddenly flooded her mind.

"Are you coming in or not?" Brayan asked, a trace of impatience in his tone. However, he still held the door for her like a gentleman.

"Oh, uh, thank you." Thalia, relieved that he didn't seem to recognize her, walked into the elevator confidently.

The elevator doors slid to a close. Both of them stood on opposite sides, neither one saying a word, as though they were indeed complete strangers.

However, the elevator had ascended only a few floors when there was suddenly a deafening bang, and the lights went out abruptly.

Despite this abrupt turn of events, Thalia remained remarkably composed. She swiftly stepped forward, pressed all the floor buttons and then the emergency call button.

Unbeknownst to her, her companion wasn't doing as well. In the darkness, Brayan furrowed his brows as all the color drained from his face, beads of cold sweat forming on his forehead.

In the pitch blackness, an eerie silence enveloped them.

All of a sudden, the elevator abruptly started to drop.

Thalia frowned, but she remained steadfast, leaning against the elevator wall for support.

The unexpected descent, however, filled Brayan with panic. The anxiety overwhelmed him, making it hard for him to support his own body.

In the end, Brayan lost control and collapsed onto Thalia.

Thalia was startled, suddenly burdened by the weight of his body. She gritted her teeth, using every ounce of her strength to stay on her feet.

Finally, the elevator came to a screeching halt.

Thalia couldn't help but inwardly curse the man for being utterly useless, contemplating pushing him away.

But just as she pressed her palms against Brayan's chest, she noticed that his body was trembling.

Realizing that something was seriously wrong, she reacted quickly and opened her phone's flashlight with her free hand.

Brayan's face was ghastly pale, his forehead covered in tiny beads of sweat. This was a stark contrast to his usual aloof demeanor.

Alarmed, Thalia hurriedly asked, "Are you okay?"

"I'm... claustrophobic..." Brayan struggled to explain.

Thalia was taken aback and at a loss as to what to do, worried that something might happen to Brayan before help arrived.

"Then..." Her eyes darted around as she racked her brains for a solution. Suddenly, she remembered that she had a small bottle of water in her bag. Acting on instinct, she grabbed the bottle, unscrewed the cap, and splashed its contents onto Brayan's face.

"I'll help you sober up!"

Chapter 3 Her Ex-Husband Is Now Her Boss

The cool water splashed onto Brayan, momentarily leaving him in a state of shock. He found himself unable to collect his thoughts, and surprisingly, his fear seemed to fade in the midst of this unexpected turn of events.

Before long, elevator maintenance personnel arrived to rescue Brayan and Thalia.

As soon as the elevator doors slid open and light flooded inside, Brayan's symptoms of claustrophobia lessened. He looked at the calm and composed woman in front of him with newfound respect and said, "Thank you for your help earlier."

At this moment, water still trickled down the man's wet face, staining his crumpled suit.

Thalia couldn't help but chuckle at the sight. "You're welcome. I'm just glad that the water helped."

Thalia's teasing didn't go unnoticed by Brayan. His expression darkened in an instant.

This woman was very bold.

Noticing the change in the man's expression, Thalia decided not to push her luck any further and returned to her usual polite and distant demeanor. "Anyway, I have to get to work now."

With that, she turned around and simply walked away without waiting to see his reaction.

Brayan watched Thalia's departing figure, his eyes narrowing slightly. A playful smile tugged at the corner of his lips as he watched her leave.

--

At the office building of Elegance Jewelers...

"The big boss who acquired our company is coming! I can't wait!"

The female colleagues in the secretary department were all abuzz, discussing the mysterious big boss who had acquired their company out of the blue.

Even Thalia, who usually steered clear of gossip, couldn't help but feel a bit curious. Who could this new boss be?

Just as this thought crossed her mind, she heard hurried footsteps echoing in the distance.

Thalia instinctively looked up, only to see a group of senior executives surrounding a young man. They all nodded to the young man with respect, gesturing at the office and saying, "This is the secretary department."

Thalia's colleagues, feeling both excited and nervous, immediately stood up to greet the new boss.

Only Thalia remained seated in a daze.

It turned out that the big boss that had acquired their company was none other than Brayan!

She had already thought it was absurd that she had engaged in a one-night stand with her soon-to-be ex-husband. Now, the man with whom she had recently shared an intimate encounter became her boss. To make matters worse, she had even splashed water on him in the elevator just now.

Recalling these events sent shivers down her spine, causing her to break out in a cold sweat.

Thalia was lost in thought until Brayan stopped in front of her. His deep voice held a barely noticeable hint of playfulness as he asked, "What's your name?"

Thalia finally snapped back to reality and quickly stood up, replying, "Thalia Palmer."

"Thalia Palmer?" Brayan furrowed his brow, as though her name rang a bell.

"Er, yes." Thalia nodded, feeling somewhat nervous. Could it be that Brayan had recognized her?

Brayan paused for a moment, and then his furrowed brow smoothed as he recalled where he had heard her name. "I remember now. When your previous boss was finalizing the contract with me, he pointed out that among all the staff in the secretary department, you were the most capable."

"Oh, I'm flattered." Thalia smiled awkwardly while simultaneously breathing a sigh of relief.

It turned out that she had been overthinking it. She had assumed that after two years of marriage, even though Brayan had never met her, he should at least know her name. But now, she realized that Brayan was even more detached from their marriage than she had thought.

Brayan was interested in assessing Thalia's abilities, so he ordered, "Okay, you'll be in charge of today's meeting."

Thalia's colleagues all cast envious glances at her upon hearing this.

The last thing Thalia wanted was to take on more responsibility, but she had no choice; after all, this man was now her boss. She reluctantly agreed, "Of course, Mr. Rogers."

Twenty minutes later, all the employees assembled in the conference room.

Thalia stood confidently in front of the display screen, delivering a clear presentation of the content on the PowerPoint slides.

Not only was she good at her job, but she was also attractive and tall, exuding a certain aura that set her apart from the other women.

All eyes in the conference room were fixed on Thalia as she delivered her presentation.

Brayan occupied the main seat and observed Thalia's focused and professional demeanor. He couldn't help but recall their encounter in the elevator. His eyes narrowed slightly, bearing an inquisitive look.

He couldn't shake the feeling that this woman seemed oddly familiar.

Even after the meeting was concluded, Brayan still hadn't quite figured out where this sense of familiarity came from, but he was genuinely curious about her. He then said, "You'll be my personal secretary. You and your team will be responsible for matters surrounding the CEO's office."

Thalia's jaw went slack from shock.

She had assumed that the acquisition would result in mass layoffs, and she had expected that the secretary team would be one of the first to go. But, unexpectedly, she and her whole department would be retained.

Before Thalia came to her senses, Brayan continued, "The rest of you can leave. Thalia, stay."

Everyone left as instructed, leaving only Brayan and Thalia in the conference room.
