"I feel like I'm being pulled in two different directions. My heart belongs to Alex, but my boss, Jake, is offering me a life I never thought I'd have. Is it wrong to want both love and security? Am I being selfish? I think about my family, my mom and my younger siblings relying on me. Jake's offer could change everything for them. But what about Alex? He's been in a relationship with me since college and I love him. Can I really throw that away?"
As Sophia sat on her couch, lost in thought, her friend Nicole knocked and came in almost immediately since the door was half opened. She walked in and plopped down beside her.
"Hey, girl! What's going on? You look like you're a million miles away."
Sophia blinked, refocusing on the present. "Just thinking about life, you know? Trying to figure some things out." Nicole raised an eyebrow."Spill the beans. What is on your mind?"
"Sophia, what's going on? You have been distant lately. Is everything okay with you and Alex?"
Sophia signed looking away. "Everything is okay. It's just.....my boss Jake. I like him and I don't know what to do."
Nicole's expression turned serious. "Girl, you can't seriously be considering this. You're in a relationship with Alex. He's a great guy.
What about your feelings for him?"
"I'm thinking of getting a new TV," Sophia said, trying to change the topic.
Nicole raised an eyebrow. "A new TV? Really? That's not what you were just thinking about."
"Sophia, don't try to brush this off, what's going on with your boss? You have barely known this boss of yours."
"Speak of the devil," Nicole muttered under her breath as Jake walked into the room.
"Hey, Jake. Long time no see," Nicole said with a friendly smile.
Jake returned the smile. "Hey!, Yeah, been busy. How are you?"
"I'm good, thanks for asking," Nicole replied, her tone polite but slightly reserved, before Sophia chimed in about Jake's gifts.
Nicole's eyes flicked to the shopping bag in Sophia's hands. "Oh, nice of you, Jake. Anyway, I should get going. Nice running into you, Jake."
"Wait, what's going on here? How often does he visit Sophia's apartment? Has Sophia been telling me the whole story?" Nicole thought to herself, her eyes narrowing slightly as she watched Jake's interaction with Sophia.
"Whoa, okay, I think I'm going to give you two some space," she said, quickly standing up and grabbing her purse. "I'll catch up with you later, Soph."
Nicole shot Sophia a "we'll talk later" look before heading out the door, leaving Sophia and Jake alone in the apartment.
Jake sat down on the couch, looking around the apartment before focusing on Sophia, who was busy examining the contents of the shopping bag. "So, how's your day been?" he asked, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled at her.
"By the way stop forgetting to close your door all the time anybody can walk in without knocking" He reminded her as he has told her before.
Sophia looked up from the shopping bag, a hint of defensiveness in her tone. "I know, I know, you've told me before. I'll try to be more careful."
Sophia walked over to Jake, sitting down beside him on the couch, and leaned in to give him a gentle hug. "Thanks for looking out for me," she said softly, her eyes sparkling with appreciation. "I really appreciate it."
The warmth of their bodies melded together as they held each other tightly, the air thick with emotion.
"I've missed you so much," Jake said.
"I've missed you too," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
"More than I thought I would," Jake admitted, his eyes locked on hers.
Sophia smiled softly. "I'm glad."
"I'm starving," Sophia said, pulling away slightly. "Want to make some lunch with me?"
"Of course," Jake replied, smiling. "What did you have in mind?"
"How about some pasta?" She asked, already heading towards the kitchen.
"Sounds great," Jake responded, following her. "I'll start boiling the water, you prepare the sauce?"
"So, what's your secret sauce recipe?" Jake asked, peeking over Sophia's shoulder as she prepared the pasta sauce.
Sophia playfully rolled her eyes. "It's a family secret, but I might consider sharing it with you... eventually."
. "You know, you're pretty handy in the kitchen," he said, trying to sound casual.
Sophia smiled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Thanks, I think I'll add 'chef' to my resume now."
Jake chuckled and handed her a pot.
As they worked side by side, their hands touched, and Sophia felt a spark of electricity. Jake's eyes met hers, and for a moment, they just looked at each other. The kitchen seemed to fade into the background, leaving only the two of them.
Jake broke the silence, his voice low and gentle. "I think the sauce needs a little more seasoning." He reached around Sophia to grab the spice rack, his arm brushing against hers. Sophia's heart skipped a beat as she inhaled the scent of his cologne.
As Jake handed her the salt, their fingers touched, sending shivers down her spine. They exchanged a glance, and she felt like they shared a secret understanding.
Just as the moment was getting intense, Sophia's phone rang. "Sorry, I should get this," she said, breaking the spell. She glanced at the screen and saw Alex's name flashing. "Hey, Alex, what's up?"
Jake stepped back, giving her space as she answered the call. The interruption brought Sophia back to reality, but she couldn't shake off the feeling that something had shifted between her and Jake.
Sophia's eyes darted to Jake, who was watching her with interest. She hesitated, unsure how to navigate the video call with Jake standing right there. Alex's cheerful voice came through the phone, asking her what's wrong, but Sophia just smiled awkwardly and mouthed "later" before quickly ending the call.
Jake raised an eyebrow, his expression questioning. "Everything okay?" he asked, his tone neutral.
Sophia felt a flush rise to her cheeks. "Yeah, everything's fine," she said, trying to brush it off.
The kitchen grew quite, the only sound being the simmering sauce and Sophia's racing thoughts.
"Thanks for the lunch, it was amazing," Jake said, pushing his plate away.
"You're welcome. I'm glad you liked it."
"So, what's with the phone call earlier?" Jake asked, his eyes curious.
Sophia's expression faltered. "Oh, just Alex.
"Who's Alex?" he asked, his tone casual, but his gaze piercing.
Sophia's cheeks flushed. "Just a friend," she said, trying to downplay it.
Jake's expression turned skeptical. "A friend who gets video calls?" he pressed.
Sophia shifted uncomfortably. "What's your point, Jake?"
"My point is, when we met, you never mentioned anyone in your life," Jake said, his voice low. "You told me you were single."
Sophia's eyes dropped, guilt written across her face. "Jake, I-"
Sophia's words hung in the air, and Jake's expression turned somber. "So, you're not sure where you stand with him?" he asked, his voice laced with disappointment.
They had been talking for five months, and he had fallen deeply in love with her. The thought of sharing her with someone else felt like a punch to the gut.
Sophia's eyes welled up with tears. He had given her his heart, and now it felt like it was being torn apart.
"Five months, Sophia," Jake whispered, his voice cracking. "I've given you my heart. I thought we had something real."
Sophia reached out to him, but Jake stepped back, his eyes welling up with tears. "I need some space," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
As he turned to leave, Sophia called out to him
"Jake, wait!"
But he walked away without looking back.
Sophia sat alone in her dimly lit apartment, the walls, once painted a vibrant yellow, now seemed dull and faded. The room was cluttered with books, and scattered clothes on her bed. A worn-out couch sat against one wall, where she spent countless nights binge-watching shows or lost in thought. As she stared blankly at the wall, tears welled up in her eyes. Jake's words echoed in her mind: "Five months, Sophia... I've given you my heart." She felt torn between her feelings for Jake and the complicated history with Alex. The silence in the room was oppressive, punctuated only by the occasional passing car outside. Sophia's thoughts swirled with uncertainty.
"Why has he not called?" Sophia checked her phone for what felt like the hundredth time, hoping to see a message or a call from him. The screen remained blank, and the clock on her wall seemed to tick away with agonizing slowness. "Maybe when he's calm he will call." She muttered silently.
As the minutes ticked by, Sophia's anxiety grew. She wondered if she had lost him forever, if the distance between them had become too great to bridge.
Sophia dialed Nicole's number, and her friend answered on the first ring. "Hey, girl! How's it going?" Nicole's cheerful voice was a welcome respite from Sophia's tumultuous thoughts.
Sophia hesitated, unsure how much to share. "Hey, Nicole. My day was...complicated. I had a talk with Jake."
"Oh? What happened?" Nicole's tone turned concerned.
Sophia sighed, collecting her thoughts. "It's just...Jake said he's given me his heart, and I feel like ....."
Nicole's response was immediate. "Girl, you need to think about what's best for you. But, honey, don't break up with Alex. He's not that bad."
Sophia's grip on the phone tightened. How could she explain to Nicole that things were far worse than she thought?
Nicole and Sophia were childhood friends who grew up attending the same schools. Their families were close, often socializing and spending time together. Over the years, their friendship deepened, and Nicole became a trusted confidante for Sophia. Despite Sophia's struggles with Alex, Nicole remained a loyal and caring friend, always ready to offer support and advice.
"You need to think about what's best for you Sophia but honestly, you need to give Alex another chance."
Sophia signed audibly. "Babes you don't understand....."
"Understand what?"
Sophia, I've seen how Alex treats you when we're out together. He's charming, attentive.......what am I missing?"
Sophia hesitated unsure how to reveal the truth about her relationship.
"It's just.....not working the way you think" She said finally.
"Okay girl. I trust your judgment," Nicole said softly. "Just be careful and don't do anything that will hurt you more."
"I won't " Sophia promised feeling a mix of emotions. "Thanks for listening,Nicole."
Sophia's thoughts drifted back to the early days with Alex, when laughter and romance filled their lives. She remembered the way he used to look at her, the way he used to make her feel like she was the only person in the world.
But over time, things changed. The sweet words turned to cruel taunts, the gentle touches turned to bruising blows. Sophia's world narrowed to walking on eggshells, never knowing what would trigger Alex's anger.
She recalled the first time he hit her, the shock and fear that gripped her heart. She excused it, blamed herself, and stayed. The abuse escalated, and Alex's infidelity was the final blow.
She felt trapped, her self-worth eroded by the constant emotional battering.
As she sat in her dimly lit room, Sophia wondered how she'd endured so much pain for so long. She thought about Jake's words, "He's given me his heart," and felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe it was time to take back control of her life.
She had been in a relationship with Alex for five years, starting from their college days when she was 21 years old. Initially, everything seemed perfect - the romance, the laughter, the late-night conversations about their dreams and aspirations.
The abuse started subtly, with verbal jabs and condescending remarks that Alex would later brush off as jokes. But soon, the verbal abuse escalated into physical violence.
Each time Sophia confronted him about his infidelity and abuse, Alex would promise to change, to be more considerate and loving. But once the dust settled, he'd revert to his old ways, and the cycle of abuse would continue.
Despite the darkness that had enveloped her life, Sophia held onto the hope that things could change, that Alex would transform into the loving partner she once knew. But deep down, she knew she deserved better.
As the night wore on, Sophia felt the weight of her emotions bearing down on her. She decided to take a bath, hoping the warm water would wash away some of the pain and uncertainty that had been plaguing her. She slowly began to undress, peeling off the layers of clothing that felt suffocating.
As she slipped into the bathtub, the warm water enveloped her like a gentle hug. Sophia closed her eyes, letting the heat seep into her bones, and breathed deeply, trying to calm her racing thoughts. She stayed there for what felt like hours, letting the water work its magic. "I should have been honest with Jake. He loves me, he's been supportive, I have feelings for him. But..... how am I sure he is different?"
As the water began to cool, She reluctantly got out of the bathtub, dried herself off, and got into bed. She snuggled under the covers, feeling the softness of the blankets envelop her. As she drifted off to sleep, Sophia hoped that tomorrow would bring a new perspective, a fresh start, and a chance to break free from the cycle of pain that had been holding her back.
In the stillness of the night, Sophia's eyelids grew heavy, and she let sleep claim her, hoping that when she woke up, she'd feel better, stronger, and more determined to take control of her life.
Sunday, 7:30 AM
Sophia slowly opened her eyes, the soft morning light peeking through the curtains. She stretched, yawned, and sat up in bed, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. As she swung her legs over the side of the bed, she clasped her hands together.
"Dear Lord, thank you for this new day. Guide me, protect me, and grant me wisdom. In Jesus' name, Amen."
Sophia made the sign of the cross, a habit she'd developed from her childhood. The quiet morning hours were her favorite time to reflect and plan.
A knock on the door broke the silence. Sophia got up to answer it, revealing Mrs. Jones, her dependable cleaner. "Good morning, madam!
I'm so sorry I didn't come yesterday," Mrs. Jones said.
"No worries, Mrs. Jones. Actually, I'm glad you didn't come. I had a lot on my plate."
Mrs Jones smiled. "Thank you madam. I'm glad you understood. I'll get started with the laundry and cleaning right away ma'am."
Sophia's late father had gifted her a cozy two-bedroom apartment, one of his properties, before he passed away. The apartment was located in a compound with other tenants, creating a security. After his passing, Sophia had moved into this apartment to make her daily commute to work easier, as she worked on the island. The two-hour drive from her family house had become too much, so she decided to relocate closer to her workplace.
The apartment held sentimental value for Sophia, reminding her of her father's love and investment in her future. She cherished the memories she made within its walls and felt his presence still with her. The second bedroom was especially dear to her, as she kept it ready for whenever her younger sisters came visiting. They would stay with her, and Sophia loved hosting them in her own space, just as her father would have wanted.
Having her own apartment gave Sophia a sense of independence, but she still loved having her family close, even if it was just for visits.
"I'm off to church now. Don't forget to lock the door and close the windows when you're done cleaning."
Mrs. Jones looked up and smiled. "Alright, ma'am. I'll take care of everything. Have a blessed service!"
Sophia smiled back, slung her bag over her shoulder, and headed towards her car. "Thanks, I'll get the key from you once I'm back home."
As she reached her car, Sophia opened the door, tossed her bag onto the passenger seat, and slid into the driver's seat. She started the engine and pulled out of the compound, heading towards the church, which was just a few minutes' drive from her house.
*****
As she walked out of the church, she was greeted by a fellow church member. "Sister Sophia, how are you?"
"I'm doing well, thank you.The service was really uplifting today."
The pastor's wife joined in. "I know, right? The message on faith really resonated with me."
Another church member, Brother James, approached them. "Hi, great service today, wasn't it?"
As Sophia smiled and nodded, she began walking towards her car. Brother James followed her gaze and fell into step beside her. "Hey sister Soph, are you heading out now? Can I get a lift with you?"
"Actually, yes, I am heading out. You're welcome to ride with me."
Brother James smiled. "Thank you so much,. I'd really appreciate it."
They drove in silence until Sophia dropped him at the location he requested while she continued her drive to her family house.
"The Sunday started well so it was definitely going to end well for her." She proclaimed to herself as she finally got to her house.
"Good morning big sister, how are you doing?" Nora asked.
"Ehm, we've been expecting you! We've been waiting for any minute now," Annie chimed in .
"I'm so hungry like I didn't eat last night , what do you guys cook before I faint because I know you guys won't let me rest as you see me?" Sophia replied.
"Jollof rice and chicken, and salad," one of the girls answered dramatically.
"Sundaes are for rice, you know," she added with a wink. "And mom prepared this special just for you."
"Ooh, yay! I'm so down for that," Sophia exclaimed.
"Sweetie, it's great to have you home," Mrs Rodgers said, giving her daughter a warm hug.
"Thanks, Mom. I'm happy to be home," Sophia replied.
Nora jumped in, "We've missed you so much!
Their mom added, "Yes, and how's my son Alexander doing?"
Sophia playfully rolled her eyes. "Mom, I've not even rested yet. Why don't you wait for me to get settled in before you start with your questionings and interviews?"
Their mom laughed. "Okay, okay."
Sophia smiled, shaking her head. "You guys are something else. Can't a girl even get a minute's peace?"
"Nope, not in this house. Annie added playfully.
"Can you girls please set the table?" Mrs Rodgers said abruptly.
Annie replied, "Why me? Why do we have a maid mom, when you keep sending me? Nora is closer to the dining area, she can do it."
Their mom intervened, "Girls, not now please. Finish setting the table first. Your sister is hungry and needs to eat."
Nora and Annie reluctantly returned to setting the table, "But Mom....."
"No but you girls go ahead and stop fighting about everything."
Their mom was firm, "No, let's do things in order. Set the table properly."
Just then, the maid came to sweep up the food Annie had poured on the floor. Sophia quickly intervened "Wait, why are you cleaning this up? You should be eating with us."
Annie looked up, "It's her job to work big sis."
But Sophia persisted, "No, seriously, why is she eating later? Why can't she eat with us?"
Mrs. Rodgers replied, "Sophia, she's our maid, she doesn't eat with us."
"But why not, Mom? Why do you let Annie treat her like that?"
"Sophia, it's just the way things are. She's here to work."
Sophia frowned, "I don't think that's fair, Mom. She works hard too."
Nora, who had been quietly observing, spoke up, "Big sis, she's been paid for it. It's her job, and we're paying her for it. She knows what she'd signed up for."
Sophia turned to Nora, "But that doesn't mean she should be treated poorly. We should treat her with respect and kindness."
Nora shrugged, "I'm not saying we should treat her poorly, but we can't just invite her to sit with us at the table. It's not practical."
Annie chimed in, "Big sis, stop being dramatic. She's fine."
But Sophia stood her ground, "I'm just saying, it's not right. She deserves respect and equal treatment in terms of how we speak to her and treat her as a person."
Mrs. Rodgers intervened, "Girls, let's not argue about this. Sophia, I understand your point, but Nora's right too."
The conversation continued, with Sophia and Nora discussing the nuances of treating others with respect and kindness.
"Hey, sweetie, come here. I need to show you something," Mrs Rodgers called out to her daughter after lunch.
"So, how's things with you and Alexander? When are you two taking things to the next level? Should I start planning the wedding for you two?"
"Mom, slow down! We're just taking things one step at a time." Sophia responded amid laughter
Her mother chuckled . "I know, I know. I was just like you once. I married your father at twenty, and look how wonderful you turned out!"
Mom.... "Yeah, yeah, I've heard that story before."
Her mother smiled. "Anyway, speaking of your father's legacy, we need to discuss the properties he left us."
"What do you mean, Mom?"
We need to be cautious and make smart decisions about how to manage the properties and our finances."
Sophia nodded thoughtfully. "Okay, Mom. I'll be careful. What can I do to help?"
Her mother smiled, proud of Sophia's willingness to learn. "We'll work on it together, sweetie. Let's go over the documents and see what needs to be done."
Annie and Nora, walked into the room. They spotted Sophia and rushed over to hug her. "Sis!" they chimed in unison.
Sophia laughed and hugged them back. "Hey, guys! What's up?"
They all chatted excitedly, catching up on each other's days. Their mother smiled, watching the siblings interact.
After a moment, Sophia said, "Mom, I really need to get going."
Her mother nodded, "Okay, darling. Be careful."
Annie and Nora pouted, "Aww, sis, already?"
"I'll see you guys soon, okay? How about we plan for the next weekend at my place?" She added.
"Oh my Goddess we love" their mother cut them shut before they could finish responding. "And who are you girls planning to leave alone at home?"
"I will definitely make arrangements for you too mom." Sophia responded while checking her wristwatch.
As they said their goodbyes, Sophia turned to her mother and asked, "Mom, do you still have some cash on you? I promise to send you some during the week."
Her mother smiled and handed Sophia some money instead. "Take this, just in case."
Sophia smiled gratefully and tucked the money into her bag. Then, she handed Annie and Nora some cash. "Here, guys. Treat yourselves to something."
Annie and Nora's faces lit up, "Thanks, sis!"
"I love you, mommy. Her mother leaned in as she kissed her on the cheek . " I love you too my first fruit." Just make sure you stay safe out there my darling." She added.
"One last hug kid sisters." Sophia called out to her sisters.
I love you girls, okay? Be good always.
With one last look at her family, Sophia made her way out into her car and drove off, feeling loved and cherished.
