LAURA'S POV
The pack's main house, (The palace) door was wide open as I walked in, everyone in the palace was silent and cold, and no one was ready to welcome me as I entered.
I looked at their faces, and it seemed to me that something was wrong and they didn't want me to know about it but, I was curious to know what was going on in the pack's main house. I noticed and went to a maiden who lay in a corner sobbing.
"What is the problem with you? Why are you all crying? what happened here? I demand an explanation from you now!"
The maiden stared at me and was silent. She acted strange and ran out. I asked myself what was going on and as the Alpha's daughter, I needed to be aware.
I then decided to go to my father's room, and I made a step in the direction of the room. A hand grabbed mine to move me in another direction. I saw her, and it was the palace Cook, I then asked what was going on in the palace.
"I need to know why is everyone here unhappy? what is going on here?!, please explain to me" I requested this time yelling, clearly frustrated about not knowing what was going on
"My dear what happened is too heavy for you to bear but keep in mind that it happens, we come into this world, and we also leave when it's time to, so you have to take it easy my dear."
I couldn't make out what she was trying to say although she was not making any effort to make me understand. My mind was preoccupied with a lot of thoughts. A lot of possibilities kept running through my head.
At that moment, I tried to figure out if someone had died In the palace but didn't know who, as these thoughts ran through my head, I realized that I had seen everyone in the palace except my parents, I couldn't hold myself anymore. I shivered as my heart raced, beating louder than usual.
"Why didn't you let me inside the Alpha's room, is there anything you are hiding from me"
" My dear, you have to put yourself together okay? go to his room and meet them there" the cook said probably realizing what was going through my mind.
As she said that, I quickly rushed into his room and I looked in the direction of my parent's bed and saw covered bodies, I couldn't help the tears that fell from my eyes as I went towards the bed and removed the covers, I saw it was my father and my mother, I screamed and cried out loud as the pain of losing my parents and being alone overpowered me.
At 20, I still hadn't found my mate yet, my parents were the only ones who I knew had my back, the pack members were already murmuring, they were already worried about who was going to be their next Alpha.
My parents found out they were mates when my mum had just turned 18, but here I was 2 years older than that I hadn't found him, my mum had told me that the moon goddess had someone special chosen for me, this had kept me going along with my parents by my side, I believed I would find my mate soon.
Maybe, the late Luna, my mother wasn't right about that, because right now even when I need him the most, he is not here. But now that the pack needs a new Alpha, I had to give them that, mate or not.
When it was time to take them out I was asked to leave as the tradition demanded, being the pack leaders' only child, I knew I had responsibilities and I wished I didn't have to carry them alone because, I didn't know what to do especially without a mate, so I moved out of their room and let the elders and guards do their job.
I was in my room with some maidens who were by my side to console me as I cried. The pain was too much for me to bear alone. It all still felt like a dream to me because I was still new to all this. I was still crying In her room when I told the maidens that I wanted to be left alone.
Not long after I had made that request, a message came through to me that my best friend Sonia had come to see me. I needed my best friend I quickly asked them to let her in.
"Oh my God, I heard what happened, please stop crying already Laura, I understand your pain," Sonia said as she tried to console me.
"I can't bear this pain Sonia. I am all alone now," I replied with tears in my eyes.
" No, you are not, you still have me love, and I will always be by your side, okay?" Sonia said, reassuring me.
"You just have to look for the way forward baby girl, you must move on with your life, okay? I know this may be a lot but the truth remains that you must put yourself together and get through this sooner than later, especially now Laura, and I will help you as much as I can." Sonia said, reminding me of what awaited me.
"Thank you so much, you have always been a sister to me," I replied sobbing.
"You must put yourself together, here, I bought your favorite combo as usual, just eat and drink these, relax, and let's go downstairs, it has already been done, if there could be any way to reverse we would have done it already," Laura said
Handling me my favorite cookies and juice, which has been my comfort combo since we were 12, she knows me better than anyone, other than my parents. I had them and felt a little better
We walked downstairs and went to where the elders were discussing when to bury the alpha king and his Luna; they discussed the matter carefully and finally fixed a date to bury them.
"That's the best time. We should start making preparations for the burial," Magnus the eldest chief said concluding the burial date.
Other elders complied quicker than I had expected and agreed with the decision on how to make preparations for the king's burial which was instructed by the chief elder Magnus. He has always been respected by the elders and the pack members.
Even my late parents had respected him a lot, he was seen as a man with so much wisdom and had helped my father make crucial decisions in the past. I knew I had to trust him as well as he knew my parents so well and knew what was best for the pack.
As the day was getting dark all the elders left the palace and went to their different residences. As they went home leaving alone in the palace.
I went back to my room with a heavy heart. Thoughts about what might have killed my parents were running through my mind. I just couldn't understand how they had both lost their lives. What surprised me the most was that even though the elders had wondered why their Alpha and Luna passed away suddenly, nothing was discussed on how investigations were to be carried out on the reason for their sudden demise. They all accepted this too quickly and I wondered why.
MAXWELL'S POV:
She was so beautiful that I couldn't take my eyes off her. I had always loved her eyes as they glowed like the moon. Beautiful wasn't enough to describe her. I could give her all the love I had inside me. I had always dreamt about her being in my arms, and my wolf and I knew well that she was our mate.
She had always been admired by most of the pack's members, especially the unmated ones, but as the alpha's daughter, she was untouchable. Although we grew up together since my father was the Beta, I had always gone unnoticed by her.
I was shocked to find out on her 18th birthday that she was my mate. As she stepped out of the house in her yellow gown with the Alpha by her side, she looked more beautiful than ever.
I suddenly felt a feeling of longing and want, as my chest went tight. I looked up at her, and my wolf and I whispered, "mate." This was unexpected. I knew I had a crush on her since she was 5, but never in a million years would I have thought that we would be mated.
I walked up to her with excitement to wish her a happy birthday personally and probably make her look at me and realize that we were mates, but I didn't expect what came next.
She had looked at me with the same eyes, just like she had always looked at me. I stared at her longer than expected, still hoping that she would realize that her mate stood in front of her, but nothing happened. She just nodded and walked away like nothing had changed.
I felt shattered as my wolf longed for his mate. He desired to hold his mate, but our mate didn't feel the same way. I had always waited for the day she would see me, and for a moment, I thought this was an amazing opportunity and blessing the moon goddess had given to me, but I guess that wasn't the case, especially not for my mate.
I was so far off with my thoughts that I didn't notice the knock at the door. The person knocking was shouting and screaming for attention, but his screaming didn't solve it on time. I later realized the knock about ten minutes after he had stood outside waiting for me. I thought it would be Xavier, my cousin.
As I went outside to open the door for whoever it was, I saw my father at my door. He didn't look so pleased, and I was surprised to see him. I didn't think that my father could be knocking at the door like that.
"What's the problem with you and why were you keeping me waiting?" my father said, almost yelling.
"Father, I had something to do, that was why I delayed. And besides, I thought it was Xavier. I didn't know it was you. I'm sorry for the delay," I defended.
"Just let me in and go get me some food. I am hungry," he said, clearly irritated.
One of the things I didn't like to do was prepare a meal for my dad, and because we didn't have a female in the house who could do that for us, my father always sent me to the kitchen to prepare our meals, which I hated so much. I always told him to remarry, and his reply would always be, "I am not ready for that."
Since the death of my mother, his mate, he has never been the same. It was evident that he loved her, but she was a warrior and had lost her life one day trying to protect the late Luna from rogues. I was consoled with the fact that she had died honorably.
"I won't be long now, Dad. The meal is almost ready. Just give me some time, okay? I will be done soon," I replied.
"I am famished, okay? Please hurry up, son," my father said.
Not long after my father had complained about the meal, it was finally ready.
"Father, I am done. Here is your meal. Enjoy," I said, feeling proud of myself for pulling off cooking up another meal.
"Okay, son," his father said with a smile.
We both finally sat down and began eating the meal. While eating, I realized that I had been hungry myself. As we ate, Xavier walked in.
"Aren't I so lucky? Having to walk in on you guys eating. Maybe I should wait to be invited before I join you in this meal," Xavier said.
We all laughed, knowing fully well that he was being sarcastic, as Xavier never asks to be invited before joining us for a meal. But since he did today, I asked him to join us. Xavier and I were cousins, we were also best friends, and we did almost everything together.
My late mother and Xavier's father were siblings. At times, we even spent the night at each other's homes. We grew up together and haven't had any serious fights ever since then.
"I came for us to go hunting," Xavier said as we feasted on the meal in front of us.
"Okay, let's finish eating and go get things prepared to go hunting," I said to him.
"Okay, no problem. Let's finish up quickly then," Xavier replied.
I finished up quickly, left my father at the table, and went to get some equipment for hunting. We went to the forest where we could get some meat. As we went further, we were so lucky, so we went deeper than usual into the forest in search of animals to kill and bring home. "I saw something," Xavier shouted as something moved fast in the bushes.
We both went in the direction of where Xavier had seen the animal, but unfortunately for us, it was some rogues. I quickly pushed Xavier out of the way as one of the rogues approached him fast.
Xavier and I quickly changed into our wolf form and joined forces to kill the rogues. I quickly brought out my claws and swiftly attacked one of the rogues. I was able to subdue one of the rogues but wasn't fast enough to handle all of them.
They were five in number, and Xavier, who was already badly injured by them, became too weak to continue the fight against the rogues. I pushed the rogue away, but the rogue hit Xavier's head. He fell and turned back into his human form.
I saw my cousin lying lifelessly on the floor, and I lost it as I attacked the rogue. I managed to chase it away because they were bleeding as well and had scars all over their bodies. We had managed to kill three of them.
I was already weak and scared and not even strong enough to walk properly, and I had to carry Xavier as well. I saw him bleeding and was not able to do anything about the fact that we were both bleeding uncontrollably. I was slowly losing consciousness and wasn't able to get up.
I had hoped that someone would come to our rescue as we lay there on the floor because the forest was dark and lonely. I suddenly saw someone approaching before my eyes closed.
Third POV:
It was the day of the burial and everyone was in black clothing to mourn their precious king. Everywhere was so cold and gloomy as no one spoke to each other. At the moment everyone was seated inside the pack's hall and in there they would read out the autobiography of the king.
The MC of the occasion was in a black suit and had a black hat on. He started by greeting everyone. He greeted and acknowledged everyone present, showing the necessary respect to the elders and important persons.
"The king was a man of peace and justice, as the Alpha of the Eclipse Moon Pack, he was wise and was a man of integrity he never for once had any problem with anyone but now he has been taken from us despite his kindness," the MC said
"This is not what we are here for okay? we must be quick about all this and leave at once" Magnus interrupted so disrespectfully.
As all this was going on, Maxwell's father was looking for him, his eyes roamed through the crowd and to the door of the hall but couldn't find him, he thought that he had been running late with his brother Xavier, because of the hunting. He thought they had stopped by Xavier's place.
It was time to put the king to rest as his burial rites were carried out as Alpha. They all left the hall at once, Alex, Sonia, and Laura walked together as they went to where the Alpha had been laid to rest, being the last to see her father before they arrived.
They already dug the ground to put the king into it and it was done as Laura cried out her eyes. Everyone eventually Departed to their various homes. Laura was not too familiar with the handsome guy beside her and decided to ask her friend.
"Don't be surprised that I am about to ask this Sonia, I am just curious, Who is this guy?" Laura said to Sonia.
"He is my cousin, a good brother of mine"
"Oh, so what's your name handsome?" Laura asked facing him.
"Well beautiful, I am Alex by name, I am Sonia's cousin, and may I confess that you are the most beautiful woman that I have seen," Alex said
Laura smiled at his words and was glad she smiled since her father's demise. She thought of being good friends with him.
"Let's go have some drink inside, and of course, you are welcome to my humble residence," Laura said to her guest seeing how uncomfortable he initially was.
"Oh I am honored, Miss Laura, thank you," Alex said.
Alex, in his heart, felt happy, as Laura welcomed him. They all went to the living room. Laura asked a maid to get three glasses and some drinks to entertain her guests.
"I already asked for some wine, please wait for it. okay?" Laura said
"Okay," Sonia and Alex said at the same time
Not long after the wine was asked for, the maid brought it to Laura. Laura asked Alex and Sonia for a toast, and they all drank to their satisfaction.
Meanwhile, it was already so late, yet nothing had been said or heard of Maxwell and Xavier by Maxwell's father. He was worried about the whereabouts of his only child and son. Julian, his father, decided to go in search of his son at his cousin's place. It was not too far from his home, so he walked there.
"Anyone here, who's inside," Julian said
"Hey I was about to come to your home in search of my son Xavier," Xavier's father said
"I also came here for the same reason, does it mean they are still hunting or what?" Julian said
"They couldn't have been hunting by now, they always come back early in the morning, something must have happened to them, this is unlike my son, we must make a move now before it's too late," Xavier's father said
"Okay I understand but what place do they go to we need to know where our search for them should begin, we can't just go aimlessly" Julian replied
"Let's just go now, there's enough time for that, we can figure that out on the way there" Xavier's father insisted.
They went to a place where they weren't sure of but they were there to see if they could find a trace of them. The two elders kept screaming and shouting their name but there was no response to their call.
"What must have happened to them, they are no longer kids, there must be something wrong with them, I just feel it In my gut," Julian said
It was getting dark as they couldn't find their sons and were already exhausted and frustrated about it. They were worried about the situation and had no plan on how to find their only child.
"If I knew such a thing would happen I would have stopped them from going or something," Xavier's father said.
"I can't bear losing my only son as well, I am really worried about them," Julian lamented.
They stood up from where they lay and rested and went back in search of their sons. They had made a promise to each other that they would go back home with their sons.
Both fathers went deeply into the bush and suddenly they saw blood. The traces of the blood led them to a house. They saw the house and were surprised to see someone live there. They went towards the house and knocked. Eventually, the owner came outside and opened it for them. He welcomed them into his home and asked them to sit down.
"How may I help you sirs?" the man said
"Well we are looking for our sons and couldn't find them since yesterday, then we came across this home and decided to come in and ask if you had seen them by any chance," Julian asked.
"Oh well, I didn't see anyone, okay? I live and stay here alone if you don't have any other thing to say then you can leave at once," the man said
"Please we could just stay here for some time, we are so tired we will leave later," Xavier's father said.
The man left them and went inside the room he was annoyed that they were with him and had insisted on staying for a while so he left not quite long after he came back and this time he had to force them out.
"Just go now, I don't need you here, leave at once! go away I don't need you people to be here any longer," the man said
"But we didn't do anything wrong, where do you think we should go without any information about our sons, this house has the closest hint to where our sons could be," Julian said
"I am here Father," a voice replied.
