Ellise was miserable. She'd broken up with her cheating boyfriend two and a half weeks ago and it still hurt. She wouldn't get out of her room and her queen sized bed seemed to have become her favorite place on earth. Naturally, her best friend was worried about her and was desperately trying to bring her out of her shell.
"For the third time, no! That's not happening"
"Please, Ellie. I need you to come with me to Sandy's birthday party!" Anne, Ellise's best friend pouted, big blue eyes reflecting just how desperate she was.
Ellise groaned, burying her face in her pillow.
"My parents won't let me leave this house. Not after what happened to Maddie" she mumbled, hoping that Anne wouldn't try to persuade her any further.
"I talked to your parents. They agreed"
Ellise raised her head instantly, her eyes wide with both shock and disbelief.
"What?! You're lying!"
"Nope, I'm telling the truth"
"You've got to be kidding me, how the hell did you do that?!"
"Well, it took some effort but it was well worth it. You need to have a life, sweetheart"
Ellise groaned, frustrated. She didn't want to go to a birthday party especially because she didn't feel that she was a socialite. Attending parties and social events were not her thing. The last time she'd attended a party, she'd made a total fool of herself. She was a total light weight and attending parties meant getting drunk. So, parties were a big 'no' for her. But if her parents had agreed to let Anne take her out to a party, there was no way she would be able to escape this one.
"I'll come back to pick you up by six pm" Anne said with a smug look on her face
"Fine" her friend groaned, hitting her head on the pillow, frustrated.
"Yay!"
Ellise let out a sigh and turned to face the wall.
"Bye, bestie" Anne chirped and exited the room after Ellise mumbled a half-hearted response.
"Bye"
"Well, this is amazing. I am officially screwed!" Ellise exclaimed and threw a small fit on her bed, using her limbs to kick the air until she was exhausted.
....
"Wake up! Get up! It's time to get ready for the party, Ellie!"
Ellise jolted up from her bed, groaning when she saw that it was just Anne standing there. If looks could kill, she would be six feet under.
"I told you we would be leaving by six and it's 6:15! You're still in bed!"
"Oops?"
Ellise was forced to take her bath before getting dressed in a black knee-length dress. Anne helped her curl her hair a little and also helped her with her makeup.
"Now that's better! You no longer look so miserable"
Ellise rolled her eyes and picked up her purse.
Anne could be a bitch sometimes, regardless of the fact that she was Ellise's best friend. There were times when she would wonder how she put up with her bitchiness.
At the party, the whole place was buzzing with life. Loud music blasted from the large speakers, bodies swaying in accordance to the music.
Anne went ahead to wish Sandy a happy birthday, then they both headed to the drink section.
"Oh my God, is that Dave? He looks hot, check out his hair!" Anne gushed.
Ellise rolled her eyes as she watched her display her lovesickness.
Dave was one of the popular guys in senior year. He had the wealth, the looks and the charms. He basically slept with anything wearing skirt. Anne had been crushing on him since sophomore year.
"Go and talk to him if you want" Ellise said to her friend as she leaned on the counter.
"No! Don't you think I might stop breathing? He's the sexiest guy alive" Anne cried and Ellise chuckled.
"You sure are a love sick pup"
"You can't blame me, he's gorgeous"
"Well, it looks like you will be getting lucky tonight" Ellise said, smirking.
"What? What? What are you talking about?"
"He's heading this way" she said, clearly amused.
"No! No! What if I blush too much and forget to breathe when I get lost in his enchanting eyes and- and lose consciousness?!" She rambled.
"Calm down, just breathe. You read way too many romance novels" Ellise said, her lips curled in a mischievous smirk.
"Hello, princess" Dave said to her when he finally got to them.
"Hi, Dave" Ellise responded, smiling.
"Hi, beauty" he said to Anne.
"H-Hi Dave"
"You look stunning tonight" Anne blushed.
"Thanks"
"What's your name, princess?" He asked.
"Anne" she replied, her cheeks heating up.
"Beautiful name for a beautiful lady. Nice to meet you, Anne. Can I have this dance?"
Anne nodded timidly and
Dave grinned, taking hold of her hand before leading her to the dance floor.
'Great, now I'm left alone,'Ellise thought.
Sighing to herself, she went to the balcony. Then, she closed her eyes, feeling the cool breeze ruffle a few strands of hair on her face.
"El?"
She froze when she recognized the deep voice that had just resounded from the darkness behind her.
"Zack?" she said, turning to face her ex-boyfriend.
"Hey, El. You look beautiful"
"Thanks" she replied, turning away from him.
"I miss you" he whispered and she shook her head slowly.
"No, you don't"
"Trust me, I do. I'm sorry things ended up the way they did"
"Yeah I know"
"I'm really sorry for hurting you. I was wondering if you could give us a second chance"
Ellise closed her eyes, her fingers gripping the railings.
"No, I can't. You cheated on me multiple times" she choked out.
Tears filled his eyes, hurt clouding his golden brown eyes.
"I was drunk, El. It was a mistake."
"You weren't drunk when I caught you with Carmella" she replied bluntly, her eyes filling up with tears.
"I know, I am so sorry" he whispered.
His eyes were filled with tears, dark bags were under his eyes. She cleared her throat and blinked back her tears, finally regaining her composure.
"You don't have to apologise, Zack. I am over you" she said and walked away, leaving him to stare at her retreating figure with longing in his eyes.
An hour later, Ellise was starting to feel bored, especially since she felt out of place. She just wanted to go home and curl up on her bed. So, she went in search of Anne. But when she couldn't find her best friend, she decided to go home alone, despite the fact that it was nightfall already.
As she walked down the street with her black shawl around her shoulders, she was suddenly pinned to the wall roughly. Alarmed, she let out a scream, panic coating her veins.
She could perceive the stale odour of alcohol and weed coming from the drunk man who had just pinned her against the wall. He clamped a hand over her mouth as soon as she opened her mouth to scream for the second time.
"Let me go!" she cried with a muffled voice.
"Let me go!"
"Shut the hell up bitch!" He growled, taking off her shawl with his free hand. At this point, Ellise's panic had soared to a different level entirely, and she was almost hyperventilating.
She could only hope and pray for someone to save her. The man buried his face in the crook of her neck and she whimpered, her blood pounding against her ears.
No! No! This can't be happening.
Please save me!
Somebody! Anybody!
Help me please!
She squeezed her eyes shut, hot tears rolling down her pale face when she realized that no one was coming for her. "P-please" she whimpered, her eyes still tightly shut.
Suddenly, the man who was just about to assault her let out a loud groan and collapsed to the ground. Ellise sank to the ground, her heart still racing in her chest. Someone was squatting in front of her with a hood over his head. With teary eyes, she stared into the greenest eyes she'd ever seen and before she could thank her saviour, everything went black.
Ellise groaned softly as she awoke from her slumber. She sat up in panic when she realized that she wasn't in her room. The room she was presently in was very unfamiliar too and this made her worried.
'Where am I?' She thought.
More panic set in when she recalled the previous night's events. She frowned slightly, confused as to why she wasn't bound or gagged. She could've sworn that she had been kidnapped the previous night. The mere memory of staring into those emerald eyes, had shivers shooting up her spine.
Swallowing hard, she looked around, trying to figure out where she was. The room was spacious and well furnished. It looked like a royal chamber. "What the hell is going on? Am I dreaming?" She muttered.
The knock on the door caught her attention and she sat up quickly, eyes wide with fear. The door finally opened and a beautiful, middle aged woman stepped in giving her a warm smile.
"I see you're up. The boss sent me to you to help you get comfortable. I am Cecilia, by the way"
Ellise blinked, staring at her in confusion. Comfortable? Is she kidding me? How can I possibly get comfortable in the abode of my captor?!
What the hell is going on?!
What kind of kidnapper does that?
She was pretty sure that kidnappers didn't live in mansions and she was sure that they lived in secret lairs where they could torture their victims.
"Oh.... right" she mumbled.
"C'mon, My lady. I have set up your bath for you. Breakfast will be ready in a few minutes" Cecilia said, leading her towards the bathroom. Her jaw literally dropped to the ground when she finally got in. The bathroom was spotless with the shower and faucets in brilliant gold. Reluctantly, she got into the golden bath tub. The water was so warm and refreshing, she almost fell asleep.
When she stepped out of the bathroom with a towel around her body, she noticed the clothes on the bed. She felt both confused and utterly dumbstruck. Cecilia came in, offering her a warm smile.
"These clothes...are they for me?" Ellise asked.
"Yes, master provided them for you" Cecilia responded and Ellise gasped.
Shit, how does he know the sizes of my underwears and clothes. Why would he do this?
"He takes care of everyone in his possession. You have technically become 'his possession'. You will meet him tomorrow. He's got a tight schedule today" Cecilia said and left the room once more.
Ellise gulped.
His possession?
I am so screwed, she thought.
What is the boss like?
What will he do to me?
Will he kill me?
Is he going to demand for a ransom?
Can it be that I am stuck here forever?
These were questions that infiltrated her mind. So to say the least, Ellise was terrified.
Inhaling deeply, she wrapped her hair up in a bun. Fully clothed, she sat down on a chair.
Cecilia walked in shortly after, carrying a tray that contained both pancakes and a glass of orange juice.
"Here's your breakfast"
Ellise forced out a smile and thanked her although she wasn't sure if she was going to eat it.
"The boss is wealthy isn't he?" she asked. Cecilia grinned.
"Of course, he is"
"How long have you known him?"
"Since he was born"
"Really?"
"He was such a sweet child"
"How old is he?"
"He's 24"
Ellise began to feel very nervous.
To be honest, she never thought that the 'boss' was that young.
"How is he like?" She asked as Cecilia opened the window.
"He's a bitter-sweet young man"
Ellise bit her lip, watching her with a frown on her face.
"He's a puzzle, my dear. He used to be such a simple young man but- oops, I guess I've said too much already. If you need me, just press the button on the wall" she said, pointing at the button beside the door.
"I'm quite sure the boss is going to like you. Have a nice day, dear"
As soon as she left, Ellise slid down the wall, bringing her knees to her chest.
She felt trapped. She remained in that position until her mental exhaustion caused her to fall asleep.
****
Yawning, Ellise sat up in bed and rubbed her eyes. She frowned when she recalled falling asleep by the wall. She couldn't remember getting to bed and was surprised to know that she'd slept for quite a long time.
Her eyes went wide when she recalled that she was supposed to meet the boss today. She felt both anxious and nervous.
So, she quickly took her bath and got dressed in a yellow dress before taking her breakfast.
"Are you nervous?" Cecilia asked her as she led her to what seemed to be the boss' study.
"I'm freaking out, actually"
"It's fine. Just take deep breaths"
"We're here" Cecilia said and she swallowed hard, her nerves racing. "He's sitting on a royal blue chaise lounge. Things might get a little awkward. Just try to keep calm. His friends are in there with him, just so you know"
"Thanks, Cecilia"
"You're welcome, dear"
Blowing out a breath, Ellise approached the massive glass doors. Slowly, she turned the golden knob and opened the door. She walked in slowly, her palms beginning to get sweaty.
This is going to be a disaster, she thought.
The first person she saw was a brown haired guy with warm honey brown eyes. He had a friendly smile on his handsome face. The next person had brown hair too, but his was darker, almost black. He had striking blue eyes and a lip piercing. He was smiling too and she felt herself slowly relaxing, the tension slowly sleeping away. If one of them was the boss, Ellise thought that perhaps, she could get him to release her.
"You must be Ellise" the blue eyed guy said, his eyes twinkling.
Wait, how does he know my name? She thought.
"My name is Dmitri. It's nice to meet you, El" he said with a wink and she smiled a bit.
"The name's Dominic. Nice to meet you, El" the brown haired guy said.
"Nice to meet you too" she blurted. She could recall seeing green eyes staring at her the night she was kidnapped. But why wasn't he among them?
"I-I was told that the boss w-wants to see me" she stuttered.
Dmitri and Dominic exchanged glances.
"Love, that would be him" Dmitri said, pointing at someone across the room.
"Turn around"
Slowly, she turned to look at him.
He was sprawled on a royal blue chaise lounge, head tipped back with his arms on either side of the longue. The air momentarily left her lungs at the sight of the beautifully carved young man sprawled out on the chaise lounge. He was smoking hot and yet, he was a piece of frosting. Ellise had never really liked men with slightly long hair until now. His body was lean, muscular and undeniably fit. His piercing green eyes were enchanting and his skin had a beautiful glow to it. She was practically drooling at the sight.
His emotionless face snapped her out of her frenzy.
He wasn't even giving her a slight smile.
"What is your name?" He asked coldly.
She gulped, her heart pounding hard.
How can someone be this terrifying?
"Ellise S-sumners" she stuttered.
"Ellise Sumners. Do you know why you're here?" He asked without a hint of expression in his husky voice.
"N-not really"
"Good. You are not to leave this house-".
"But I want to go home!" She blurted out but realized her mistake a little too late.
He stood up, taking predatory steps towards her. He was towering over her and she couldn't help but feel intimidated.
"Bad, bad girl. You should learn never to interrupt your boss whenever he's speaking" he said, his eyes darkening.
Ellise went pale, tears filling her eyes.
"Xan, you're scaring her" Dominic said while she trembled, unable to make eye contact with him. His chocolate brown hair fell over his eye and he clenched his jaw, anger radiating from him.
"You are not allowed to leave this house and you will do anything I ask you to do" he growled.
"Xan, calm down" Dmitri said.
He turned to glare at Dmitri, eyes darkening the more.
"Get. Out" He growled, clenching his fist. "Xan, you don't have to do this" Dominic said.
"I said, leave"
Dominic and Dmitri sighed and began to walk away, concern in their eyes.
"Listen carefully. If you fail to behave well, you will be punished. Never enter my room unless I asked you to do so. Don't you dare touch my personal stuff"
"I want t-to go home" I whimpered, tears flowing down my cheeks. He chuckled bitterly, tipping my head back with his finger under my chin.
"You are not going anywhere. You are trapped here"
Ellise felt like she was going to suffocate. Why her of all people? Why would someone as dangerous as he was, be interested in someone like her?
"Please, let me go! I have a family!" She cried. His grip on her wrist tightened and she yelped.
"You're hurting me!" She cried.
"I don't give a damn. I am your boss and you won't try to leave, got it?"
She nodded, shaking like a leaf in winter.
"What s-should I call y-you?"
"Mr Loides"
He released her and she ran out of the study, throwing herself to the ground as soon as she got to her room.
This had just officially become the start of her worst nightmare.
Alexandre felt conflicted. He felt that he'd made a horrible mistake by listening to the slobber heads that he called his friends. He didn't want a girl in his life, not after losing the first one he'd fallen in love with. He didn't think his heart could take any more heartbreaks. He shouldn't have brought her home, but it was a little too late now.
She was so beautiful with her long Auburn hair in shinning waves down her back. Her dress had hugged her beautiful curves in such a perfect way that had made him want to kiss her senseless. He could vividly recall how her big brown eyes had filled up with tears and fear.
He didn't want her to be afraid of him. Still, he felt that it was the only way to prevent the both of them from falling for each other.
He couldn't deny the fact that she reminded him of Liv, his ex-girlfriend and this only made things a little harder than necessary. Ellise didn't know it yet. But, he was doing her a favor by keeping her in his home. It would be assumed that she was very valuable to him because he'd saved her. His enemies would've gotten rid of her if he hadn't decided to keep her safe in his home.
He couldn't risk letting his guard down. He didn't want to get hurt, again.
He sighed heavily, brushing his hair away from his face.
He had hurt her, he realized.
I'm a monster, just like my parents, he thought with a heavy heart.
"Xan?"
He turned to see Cecilia opening the window of his bedroom.
He sighed, burying his face in his hands. "Are you okay?" She asked. "No" he whispered.
"What's wrong?"
He wanted to tell her that he felt bad for hurting Ellise but he remained silent, his mind clouded by several thoughts .
"I'm just tired"
"I am worried about you, Xan. You're shutting yourself out. I don't want history to repeat itself" Cecilia said.
"That was three years ago. I am doing great now. Thanks to you and my friends, I am back on my feet".
She shook her head, placing her hand over his.
"Are you really okay? Are you trying to convince yourself that you're okay when you're not?"
He frowned, meeting her blue eyed gaze. "I've watched you for the past three years. You've refused to let down your walls. Don't you think that it's time for you to find love and healing? Here's your chance, Xan. Don't screw it up" she said.
"It's not that easy" he mumbled.
"I know, sweetheart. I want you to try to let go. I'll be there to help you when you're ready"
She pressed a kiss to his forehead, squeezed his hands reassuringly before leaving. Cecilia was his rock, she was like the caring mum he never had.
****
Ellise opened her eyes, sitting up slowly. The previous day's morning had been a disaster. She had never expected her meeting with Mr Loides to be so unpleasant. She stared at her wrists, wincing at the painful looking bruise that marked her skin. She realized that without a doubt, she was definitely trapped and there was no way she could escape.
Wiping away her tears, she stood up went into the bathroom to take her bath. When she returned, Cecilia was standing in her room. Her eyes went wide when she saw the bruises on Ellise's wrists.
"He did this?" She asked, grabbing her hand to inspect the painful looking bruises.
"I apologise on his behalf. He's a bit violent considering the nature of what he does. But he has a heart deep within. Maybe, you can help restart his heart. Have a good day" she said and left the room.
Ellise frowned to herself, clearly confused.
Restart his heart?
How?
What the hell did that mean?
Ellise stared at the pancakes Cecilia had brought her. She wasn't really hungry, so she got dressed and sat down on the bed.
She decided to do everything she could to make Mr Loides to let her go. She had to try.
There was no way she was going to give up just like that.
****
Mr Loides returned home from a meeting at three pm. Dmitri and Dominic came with him.
As soon as he entered his room, Dominic grabbed Ellise's hand to inspect her bruises.
"He did this to you, didn't he?"
She wanted to lie to them, but it was no use since they already knew the truth.
"I'm really sorry for his behavior towards you" Dmitri said with a look of sympathy in his eyes.
Ellise smiled weakly and went back to the kitchen to help Cecilia in cooking.
When they'd placed the food on the table, Mr Loides walked in and stood by the table, staring at Ellise. She shivered, goose bumps surfacing on her skin. Why was he staring at her?
Ellise was worried that she'd done something wrong.
As they ate, the others had a long conversation but Ellise remained silent, afraid that Mr Loides would get mad at her for talking.
After lunch, he went back to his room without a word.
"Hey, El? What's wrong? You spaced out for a while" Dmitri said and she lowered her gaze.
"Are you afraid of him?" Dominic asked, his eyes filled with concern.
"I am terrified" she squeaked out.
Dmitri embraced her, patting her back.
"It'll be okay" he whispered and she closed her eyes, inhaling his cologne.
She was relieved that she had people she could talk to.
"You're an amazing young lady, Ellie. I am sorry that you're trapped here for the time being" Dmitri said, giving her a look of apology.
She sighed.
"My parents don't care about me though. Ever since my elder sister died, they neglected me. I really hated it but now, I prefer to be with them than to stay in this hell hole. I don't know why Mr Loides hates me so much" she said. Dominic squeezed her hand reassuringly.
"We're here for you, love. You can talk to us whenever you need someone to talk to" he said. "Can't you help me out of this place?" Ellise asked and they both exchanged glances.
"I'm sorry, there's no way we can do it. The security here is really tight, if you haven't noticed yet" Dmitri said.
She sighed, her head hanging low in defeat. She quietly watched them as they played poker. She was soon lost in her own thoughts.
"Ellie?" Cecilia said and she looked up at her. "Yes?"
"Are you okay? You zoned out there for a while" she said giving her a worried look.
"I'm fine" Ellise said, giving her a weak smile.
"Xan said he wants you to get him a glass of water" Cecilia said and she stood up, nerves racing.
She filled a tumbler with water, trying to steady her shaky hands.
Taking a deep breath, she left the kitchen with the glass of water and headed straight to his room. The door was a mixture of white and gold designs. Holding her breath, she knocked on the door. "Come in" a raspy voice said and she opened the door. Then she walked in, closing the door behind her.
His room was dark and she had to squint in order to avoid tripping.
She was quite aware of the fact that she was quite clumsy.
Suddenly, the lights went on and she flinched. Droplets of water spilled on the smooth marble floor. Mr Loides lay on the bed with a blanket wrapped around his body. He looked very much asleep with his long eyelashes casting shadows against the top of his cheeks. He looked so innocent and beautiful in this position. Ellise gulped nervously, turning to leave the room since she didn't want to wake him up.
"Ellise" his raspy voice stopped her dead on her tracks.
His eyes were open halfway and he was peering up at her through his eyelashes.
"Mr Loides, here's your water" she said, her hands trembling. He sighed and sat up, grabbing a pill bottle from the bedside table. She felt a pang in my chest.
Was he sick?
He looked really tired but could he be ill?
"Ellise" he hissed and she flinched.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" He said, anger radiating from his tired voice.
"S-sorry, I-I zoned out"
He sighed heavily and took the glass of water from her.
She watched him pop the pills and chug down the water before laying down on the bed. Then she picked up the glass and began to retreat. She turned to spare him one last glance. His eyes were closed, lips parted slightly.
"What the hell are you looking at?"
His sudden statement caught her off guard and she stumbled and tripped on the wet floor, the tumbler breaking into several glass shards. She whimpered, tears crawling down her cheeks as she felt the glass shards dig into her skin.
Mr Loides slipped out of his bed and walked towards her, eyes wide. For the first time, she saw an emotion in his eyes..... concern.
He held her hand, his gaze fixed on the glass shards embedded in her palm. Carefully, he held them and pulled them out. Ellise cried out in pain, more tears rolling down her cheeks.
She looked up into his eyes and her heart sank. His eyes had gone blank and she knew at once that they were back to square one.
"You are so careless, Ellise! Just leave my room right now!" He ordered and she nodded before rushing out of his room.
She felt foolish for thinking that he would care about her even a little.
She got to her room and washed off the blood, tears blurring her vision. Unable to find the first aid box, she laid down on the bed, cradling her injured hand to her chest until she fell asleep.
***
Xandre paced back and forth in his room, tugging at the roots of his hair. The moment Ellise had gotten hurt, he'd felt really bad and had wanted to comfort her. If she knew how vulnerable he was, he felt that she could use it against him. She would find a way to break through his walls and he didn't want that.
He was afraid of letting go. He didn't want to care for her. He wasn't supposed to care.
He left his room to check up on her since he knew that she was probably not going to dress her cut.
She was lying on the bed looking so beautiful. He grabbed her hand, kneeling beside her carefully. Her injured hand was bleeding and it looked really painful. Holding his breath, he cleaned the wound. She groaned in her sleep but still didn't wake up. It was clear that she was a heavy sleeper.
He gently wrapped a gauze around her injured hand before applying a bandage. Carefully, he placed her hand back to her side without waking her up. She didn't have to know that he cared when he shouldn't.
Ellise turned on her side, a tear sliding down her cheek as she mumbled in her sleep.
'I'm sorry, Mady. Don't go, please.......'
He bit his lip, his grip on the first aid kit tightening.
She doesn't deserve to be stuck with me. She doesn't deserve my wrath and anger. I should let her go. Heck, I should give her the life she desires. But no, I can't. I don't know why. But I can't let her go, he thought.
